Weird Airport connection. Need help.

Here's what's going on:
- Used to use my AEBS to connect to internet using dialup modem.
- Switched to DSL this summer.
- I have my DSL modem connected directly into the WAN of my AEBS and I can connect with my G5 desktop.
- PLEASE NOTE: the DSL modem is plugged directly into the airport, NOT the computer, and I connect fine to the internet.
Here's where it gets interesting (to a novice like me):
- When I go to my Network Preferences (system preferences > network) and show the network status for my home location, I see two items:
1) PCI Ethernet Slot Unknown Port 2. This has a green status light, and to the right it says "PCI Ethernet Slot Unknow Port 2 is currently active and has the IP address 192.168.1.47. You are connected to the internet via PCI Ethernet Slot Unknown Port 2"
2) Airport. This has a yellow status light, and to the right it says "Airport is connected to the network ExtremeNet (the name of my home network). Airport does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the internet"
It's weird that my G5 is supposedly connected via a PCI Ethernet slot when there IS NO ETHERNET CABLE PLUGGED INTO MY G5 Ethernet NIC.
Now here's my problem: I can't connect to the internet wirelessly with my laptop. The Powerbook Titanium G4 sees the Airport, but in the Network Preferences it says the same thing (with the yellow circle).
How to I assign an IP address to the Airport? (A correct IP address would be nice).
By the way, I'm running 10.4.8 on the G5 and 10.3 on the Powerbook. The Airport Base Station is version 5.6

That's usually what happens when the router for whatever reason isn't providing a default route to the machine.
There are two big things your machine needs to be given to communicate with the Internet - an IP address for your local network, and a gateway address that tells your machine which address packets must be addressed to if they are to leave your local network.
It sounds as if the DHCP server may be providing one but not the other.
Note that this may not necessarily be a bug; several routers and DHCP servers can be configured with the default gateway field blank so that any system can obtain a local IP address but only those manually configured with the gateway address can use the Internet.

With that one, let's try the following procedure.
First, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. If it goes, good. If it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to iTunes.
Next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Now launch Windows Installer CleanUp ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"), find any iTunes and/or QuickTime entries in the list of programs in CleanUp, select those entries, and click “remove”.
Next, we'll manually remove any leftover iTunes or QuickTime program files:
    (1) Open Local Disk (C:) in Computer or whichever disk programs are installed on.
    (2) Open the Program Files folder.
    (3) Right-click the iTunes folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion.
    (4) Right-click the QuickTime folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. (Note: This folder may have already been deleted if QuickTime was successfully removed using Add/Remove Programs earlier.)
    (5) Delete the QuickTime and QuicktimeVR files located in the C:\Windows\system32\ folder. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue. (Note: These files may have already been deleted if QuickTime was successfully removed using Add/Remove Programs earlier.)
    (6) Right-click on the Recycle Bin and on the shortcut menu, click Empty Recycle Bin.
    (7) Restart your computer.
Now try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly now?

  • New airport user need help setting up a pc on the network

went and bought a airport extream today and my mac works fine on it but i also have a pc and need help getting it to work with the airport express. it seems to see the airport in the network slection screen but after i put in the pass i get nothing and it returns to the "chose a wireless network" can anyone help?

    Thanks for the reply.
That's interesting, I guess I had assumed that would be a basic thing.
Right now the 4000 number is in port 1, and then 4244 is in port 2. So if no one else is on the phone, and my  boss picks up his phone, dials 9 then XXX-XXXX, he will be routed outbound on the 4000 line on port 1. Then while he's talking, if I pick up the phone and dial 9 then XXX-XXXX, I will be routed out on the 4244 line on port 2.
    Am I understanding that correctly?
If that is the case, then that is a bit frustrating. Our 4000 line has everything on it, call waiting, caller id, long distance, etc. But the 4244 line is just a basic service. So if I'm calling local or toll free, I don't want to tie the other line up in case someone else needs to make a long distance call to a client. Is there any work around to that at all? Is there any way to use steering digits to point the call to the right line? Would we have to put the PSTN lines on seperate SPA400's?
Again, any comments and suggestions are much appreciated!

  • Problem with lacie HD and airport extreme need help!!

Let me first off tell you what my set up is powerbook with the latest 10.4 os, airport extreme software up to date, a Lacie 500gb usb hard disk connected to the airport extreme, i've got an apple TV connected to the extreme via ethernet, I also have a macbook pro using the airport.
The problem i've got is the powerbook is the main hub between the external hard disk and the apple tv but it's started to not hold a connection to the lacie i keep having to tell the powerbook to connect then ok it with a password and as a result i have to keep re syncing things like movies and photos to the apple tv.
Is there a way to automatically connect the powerbook to the hard disk with out it needing a password if not can anyone come up with an explanation as to why the disk has started to unmount after being fine for weeks?
My macbook pro has no problems keeping a connection.
    Thanks in advance

I just found out something today which might help you Daniel, but that doesn't solve our problem in a "classic" way...
So I was very obsessed by the fact that Windows Vista could actually access the shared HD with Bonjour and with a lot of testing I found this : let's say my macbook pro was off, if I would access the HD with Vista and then open up the MacBook Pro, then there would be no problem.
Eventually I found out that the problem really came from the fact that my WD MyBook 1Tb external drive was putting itself on standby after a while (which is a good thing actualy). When I was trying to connect to the drive while it was on standby with Finder, it would try to connect forever... however, it would physically wake up the external drive (I could tell by the sound)... but too late for Finder, and no way to access it other than rebooting the Mac... OR crashing Finder (Apple Menu - Force to quit). Then the Finder restarts automatically and the drive works.
I really don't like this solution (having to crash finder) but it works.
PLEASE if someone has a better way, let me know !!!

  • Low-Res connection, need help.

I've got a 1.25 GHz eMac running OS 10.3.9 connected to a high-speed DSL network (unknown speed) through a Linksys router and AirPort. I conferenced with a new 1.83 GHz iMac running OS 10.4.? connected directly to a "lite" cable ISP (256 Kb download/128 Kb upload speed).
There was no delay, the audio was pretty good, but the video quality wasn't very sharp at all, so I'm quite disappointed. I figure there's a weak connection link somewhere in the specs I listed above. The video was not nearly as clear as advertised, and it was only about 14 fps.
I think the ISP connection speed is probably the problem. How can I check that from my computer?
Any help figuring this out would be appreciated.

Bill, thanks so much for the info. I've been using Macs for over 10 years and there's always something new to learn.
Yes, I'm using an external iSight on my eMac. The other iMac has the built-in iSight, too. I'll save that USB device link, just in case, though. It might come in handy at some point.
I'm forbidden from using the "speakeasy" site, but the other link worked. Here are the specs taken from the free test:
    Communications: 880.5 kilobits per second
    Storage: 107.5 kilobytes per second
    1MB file download: 9.5 seconds
    Subjective rating: Good
It looks like the iMac's 128 Kbps connection is probably the problem. What is the difference between upload and download speeds, WRT the iSight's performance? My guess is that the lower of the two is the limiting factor.
The iMac I conferenced with is my mother-in-law's, and my computer will be left with my mom when I move away in the near future (I just joined the Navy). All I'll need is a new iMac and a decent ISP, then my mom and my kids will be able to use iChat. If my mother-in-law wants to shell out an extra $14/mo. on her cable bill for better connection speed, that's her perogative, ha ha.
Thanks again for the help. I'm much happier now.

  • 2Wire + Airport Connection issue (Help wanted)

    Hello All,
I use a 2Wire HomePortal router to connect to my DSL service, and it works very well with our old PC and my iMac G5 (both ethernet and wireless). I purchased my new MacBook in August, and It connected well to the 2wire network, until two days ago. Right now, all I can connect to with the HomePortal router is via ethernet, which works fine. When I attempt to connect by wireless, I recieve the message "There was an error connecting to 2wire*" It's WEP passcoded, but I already know that I need to put a $ in front of the passkey, so I doubt that's the problem. Also, I can connect to other wireless networks, so I know it isn't a general AirPort problem.
Thanks so much for your help!
    -Belril

I'm not sure how helpful this may be, but I also use a 2WIRE router/modem for my DSL connection. I initially had problems with it and here are the thide ngs that I did to get the connection to work:
    1. Reset the router (I unplugged it and plugged it back in after about 30 seconds)
    2. Made sure that I used the right version of WEP on the AirPort. I had to use the hex key choice to get it to connect.
    After that all was well.
    Good luck...

  • Vonage, dsl and airport configuration need help!

Vonage is not Mac proficient. I cannot get a technician on their end to help me connect the router they sent me to configure it to work with my airport base station and dsl modem. Is there anyone out there who is actually up and running wirelessly via airport extreme base station with a Zyxel P-660R modem from Earthlink DSL with Linksys RT31P2 broadband router from Vonage?

From a quick google, it looks like you should take the ethernet connection from the Zyxel into the RT31P2's "Internet" port. Connect a second ethernet cable between one of the RT31P2's LAN ports and your Airport base station. Set the Airport as a bridge--connect using Ethernet, configure using DHCP, don't distribute IP addresses.

  • Have an AirPort Express - Need Help

Got a new CenturyLink Modem/Router and am having TROUBLE resetting up my AirPort Express. Managed to get Century Link Wireless up and running. Then somehow created a Wireless WiFi Network which also seems to work. But the Amber light on the AirPort Exp continues to blink. My goal is to extend the range of my wireless wifi in my home. Don't know what I've done or how to fix it. Please help. Thx.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to extend the wireless range of your new CenturyLink modem/router with the AirPort Express as the two are not compatible for this feature ... at least not if you want the connection between them to be wireless. However, if you can support having a wired connection between them, then they both can be configured for a "roaming" network. This type of network will effectively increase the wireless range as well.

  • CS6 Looks Weird...Need Help!

Hello. I am running Adobe Photoshop CS6 on Windows 8 64bit.
When I open up pics, photos, etc. in CS6, they look a little weird, like the color is off. They also look a little pixelized but they shouldn't be.
Does anybody know why this is and what option I may need to check or uncheck to fix this issue?
This does not happen when I use Paint Shop Pro X5.
Thanks for any help you can offer!
    Cheers!!!

    Yes, it is. 1200 x 900 pixels.
I have been working with Photoshop for years and this is the first time I've noticed this.
It looks kinda "washed out" if you know what I mean. And I am not running any plug-ins with it either.
    Just straight CS6 64bit.

  • Wireless connections need help on what type to get.....

I have an iMac G5 and need to make it wireless. Due to construction. I believe its a 17 inch 1.8gh( I think). What would I need to make it wireless? Also my iMac is going to be a good 100-150 feet away and up a story from the dsl box. Plus the Floor itself is about 6 inches thick or more in spots. I don't think the airporter express will cover this range. And no there is no way of moving the box closer and I don't want a bunch of wires running all over the 2 story house. Any ideas of what product would be helpful in this case?
    Thanks!

    Have you tried it?
You will probably get more wireless info from the knowledgeable users in one of the AirPort Forums where the wireless users hang out.

So why don't you search for the documentation? Tomcat is one of the few apache java projects that is actually decently documented.
    http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-5.5-doc/jndi-datasource-examples-howto.html
That should be all you need to get up and running. For the correct JDBC settings, the microsoft website has an article, as do many other websites.

  • Setup Guest Network with OS X Server and Airport Extreme - NEED HELP!

    Hi All,
So I have a small business with a Mac Mini Server (10.6.5) and an Airport Extreme. The Airport is handling the routing and DHCP duties, while the Server is handling the DNS. The Airport is pointed to pull DNS from the Server. All internal systems work great accessing the internet and folders on the Server.
I need to setup a Guest network for internet access, so I turned this function on in the Airport Extreme. It sets up fine, but if you connect to that new Guest Network the system hangs trying to open a web page. My thinking is since the Server is the one handling the DNS it is not working for Guest computers since they are not part of our internal network. At least that is my theory, I could be wrong.
With this type of setup what do I need to modify to get this working? Anyone have any ideas?

After trying for days to figure this out I was finally able to get a working solution and I now have my APE providing a guest and main network while using my lion server as the Dsn server for the main network.
The setup is a bit of a hack and does require you to have at least two devices with staticly assigned ip information on the main network but it does allow you to serve dhcp for both networks from the server and make some services available to the guest network such as iTunes remote for parties.
    1) delete your custom Dns entries from the Internet settings in the APE and set two dhcp reservations for .2 and .3 (in this case my Mac mini server and my airport express)
    2) reduce the dhcp range to only have 2 available IPs (10.0.1.2-10.0.1.3) and save settings
    3) on a computer connected to the main network install wireshark and begin sniffing for packets. Connect at least one device to your guest network and look for any packets that have an ip from your guest network (usually 172.16.42.x) once you capture one of these packets expand the vlan information. This should list a vlan ID ( in my case this was 1003. I would suspect this is universal but do not know)
    4) on your server open network preferences, click the gear at the bottom and click "manage virtual interfaces", add a vlan that matches the vlan ID from above. Click ok and apply your settings. The vlan interface should get an ip in the guest network range from your APE.
    * if you are running lion you will need to install server admin tools before proceeding*
    5) open server admin and add the dhcp service. Create an entry for your primary network (ex: 10.0.1.x) make the dhcp range one higher than the settings in step 2 ( ie: 10.0.1.4 to 10.0.1.253) assign this to the physical interface. Make sure this entry has your internal DNA servers
    6) add another entry for the guest networks ip range (ex: 172.16.42.x) again set it one ip higher than step 2 ( 172.16.42.4 to 172.16.42.253) save and activate both ranges. Assign this range to the vlan interface. Make sure this entry either contains your isps dns servers or another public dns server. Turn on dhcp.
Because you have now assigned the only two addresses in the APEs pool for your primary network to static entries there will not be any addresses to assign and the APE will not respond to requests. This will allow your server to pick up the work of assigning IPs. As for your guest network, the APE will assign IPs for two host and then stop. Your clients may either get an IP from the APE or the osx server so both should have the same info. Just make sure the two static clients on your main network have the local DNA servers entered manually.

  • MacBook no longer connects -- need help!

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but as I was scrolling through posts, I found similar problems that didn't quite apply, but nothing identical.
I bought a MacBook 1.5-2 months ago. Had some initial troubles connecting to my home network, but once I switched protection from WEP to WPA everything has been running fine. Yesterday morning I had to reboot my cable modem, which runs into a Netgear WGR614 v8. That night, when I went to connect via the new MacBook, I got the error that airport could not connect to my network, please try again.
My hardwired G5 Tower connects via the router no problem, and my wife's iBook connects wirelessly no problem. The MacBook was able to connect to someone else's unprotected network no problem, so I know the card in it is still good, as is the router. I checked and the right password was still being remembered.
    Any ideas?

Have you tried adding your home wireless network as a "Preferred Network" in your MacBook's AirPort settings?
