Weird and annoying mailbox behavior!

Dear all,
My father has a problem, he is not recieving any emails in his mail app from his @me.com. Also the sender of the email to my father gets a bounce straight back with nothing written in the body. Furthermore sometimes if he gets emails from people in his contact listl, they sometimes show up in the junk mail?
Please help and please tell me if you need more info!
Derek

well, I used to have "fc-cache -f" run on startup (rc.local) in order to make sure.... sure it took  a bit, but I only reboot after big X changes (because I can't fully wipe out xdm if it is respawning).
And yeah lanrat - I forgot about the "man fonts-conf"... my fault there.
And I thought the font dirs were in local.conf.... but you're most likely right (as those are all basically system default font dirs).
I'll have to look into xfontsel.... it may show TTF fonts, but it uses old XFDL syntax for fonts.... whereas the syntax speicifed above is modern (as of 2001ish) just not used for some obscure reason.
I sent Kieth an email regarding fontconfig and freetype and font HOWTOs... we'll see if he responds....
Until then, this is the best guide I've seen so far:

The only conflicting thing I've seen is the following ->
From above guide, discussing font type handling:

  • Weird and annoying font issues

I really need help with my fonts.  Xfontsel and term emulators inc. aterm AND rxvt-unicode cannot find many of my fonts inc TTF and non-TTF and i do not understand why.  All my fonts are visible and useable by gtk apps.  They all appear in gtk2fontsel.
There may be some error in my xorg.conf but i find it diffcult to understand why fonts appear in some apps.
I can use some artwiz fonts in aterm but they all have huge space between the characters.  this seems weird and makes me think it must be something in my x config or other settings cos they are AL artwiz package in the usual path - if they work for most people they should work for me right?

  • Mp 620. Very weird and annoying behavior

So the Mp620 used to work fine.. but now it prints fine, but after 1 print it will get an (Output slot is jammed error, or Rear slot is jammed error) when nothing is jammed!! I usually have to turn off the printer, cancel the job, and reprint each page 1 by 1 by repeating this process.. its VERY annoying.. it does this both on my macbook and desktop..
    thanks in advance.

Sounds like you may have a mechanical fault with this printer. I don't think the errors are being caused by anything in the driver. Certainly the only time I have seen the same messages is when paper is jammed. There are a couple of sensors in the unit for paper detection. One or both of these are probably the cause of the messages or you have a fault with the main board.

  • Really weird and annoying noise

When I use iChat (video chat) I get this really weird interference or noise, won't start at first but I hear it building up then it gets to be too loud and I can't hear anyone. And only I can hear it. To describe it, it sounds almost like a helicoptor or something and kind of like a pulsing static that changes volume. If anyone knows how to fix this I would reaally appreciate any tips.

its not high pitched and im the only one that can hear it. im using a Logitech USB headset and im wondering would the sound not occur if i just use the internal mic and speakers in the iMac. but im concerned that any sound coming through the speakers would be immediately picked up by the mic.
oh and also the person i chat with is using a pc but like i said im the only one that sound occurs to and its really really annoying.

  • Really weird and annoying problem

When I double click on a waveform (I forget the name of that small window that comes up), and play back just that one audio object in that window, it acts like it has a really extreme gate on it, only letting through very loud sounds, while the rest is just quiet. This is extremely annoying because I want to edit certain parts, and I can't find out what I need to select because I can't hear anything. Suggestions?

  • Weird (and annoying) two profiles on the one ID.

I've not used the forums much recently so when I logged in a couple of days ago I didn't worry about the prompt to assign a 'screen name' to my ID. I just thought it was a feature of the upgraded forum.
But then I noticed that my avatar and points were both missing. After a bit of trial and error (much logging out and logging in !) I realised that I have two different screen names assigned to my one ID. My original (nealeh) and the new (Neale_in_the_UK). Both are linked to the same email address.
Hopefully the following two screen dumps highlight my problem. Please would you delete the 'Neale_in_the_UK' keeping just the 'nealeh' with the avatar and points.
    The one to keep please:

That's what is most strange - I always sign-in as nealeh using the same parameters (I use roboform to connect and fill in the sign-in screen so it is always identical). I never did detect a pattern as to whether it connected me as 'nealeh' or 'neale_in_the_uk'.
Still, since you deleted the 'in_the_uk' name, all seems back to normal.
    Thanks,

  • Weird and aggravating user-burned DVD problem.

    Hi,
I'm experiencing a very weird and annoying problem with my self-written data DVDs.
Basically, when I wrote a couple of data-DVDs today, I cannot seem to copy the files from these DVDs on a Mac via the normal way anymore. Basically, when I mount my DVD I see all my files just fine, but when I wish to copy one to my computer I get the forbidden-cursor (the one with the black arrow and a white stopsign). Now the weird part is that if I select multiple files I can actually copy them to the hard-drive, but with a strange caveat; namely the file that I selected last will not be copied over.
This was the first time my self-written DVDs showed this behaviour, so to check I dug out an older DVD which I knew worked perfectly a year ago. But lo and behold, it now also displays this behaviour. What's more, it seems suddenly all three Macs in this house decided do treat my DVDs (old and new) in this weird way. The lone Windows pc downstairs otoh actually did just fine and allowed me to copy single files from the disc with no problem.
But that's not all. If I insert such a DVD and later on insert a self-written CD, this CD suddenly shows the same behaviour. Only after relaunching the finder will this CD work correctly again (sadly, this doesn't help with the DVDs).
To write my DVDs I use an external LaCie d2 16x DVD+/-RW (completely up to date with respect to its firmware) with Toast Titanium 7.0.1 on an eMac G4 1ghz running Tiger 10.4.7 .
I use either DVD+R or -R (both show this problem) and write them using Toast's Mac & PC data disk option. Between the three Macs here at home the only constant factors are the Apple-supplied system updates, leading me to believe there is either an undocumented burning bug in Toast or there is a problem in Tiger 10.4.7 .
A google-search did not bring up anything, neither a confirmation nor a solution for this problem. My question now is; has anyone here ever experienced this problem and found a solution (or have at least an idea what the underlying problem could be)?
Thanks for any and all replies,
    Tim
P.S.: I figured that perhaps there was a sort of permission problem on the mount volumes, so I ran the fix permissions routine but to no avail sadly.
    eMac G4 (1 Ghz) ATI-graphics, combo-drive, 512 Mb RAM, 160 GB HDD   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Update:
It seems that older DVDs do in fact still work ok when one relaunches the finder, just like I mentioned for cd's in my above post. So seemingly the DVDs written today somehow seem to 'corrupt' the Finder with their behaviour.
In fact the last 'good' backup DVD I wrote was in february of this year, so whatever is causing this must have happened between then and now. This gives me the impression that there must be an incompatibility between 10.4.7 and either Toast 7.0.1 or with the firmware on my DVD±RW drive.
    Any insight is greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Tim

  • Changes to mailbox behaviors not being saved.

    Hey guys,
I have two Google accounts set up on Apple Mail. When I try to edit the Mailbox Behaviors (under Preferences>Accounts>Mailbox Behaviors) they are never saved. My steps are:
    1. Go to Mailbox Behaviors
    2. Uncheck Drafts & Sent
    3. Click the other account, choose another tab, or close preferences
    4. Dialog appears asking if I want to save the changes
    5. I choose to SAVE.
    6. Go back into Mailbox Behaviors - the changes were not saved (i.e. everything is still checked).
Any ideas? I'm running 10.9 on a retina Macbook Pro.

OK...my previous attempt didnt work as the settings came back after a full sync.  However, I found another thread that solved my problem.  Hope this helps!

Re: Mavericks Mail app and Gmail Drafts folder
Oct 24, 2013 10:30 AM (in response to Igor D.)
I had the same problem and it was causing dozens of versions of autosaved drafts to appear in my Trash. (Gmail autosaves drafts at the server level and trashes previous saves. The feature is not customizable.)
This fixed it for me, at least for the time being:
    1) Quit Mail.app.
    2) Log into Gmail in your favorite web browser.
    3) Click on the gear menu and select "Settings".
    4) Click on the "Labels" tab.
    5) Under "System Labels", next to "Drafts", click on "show if unread" and uncheck the "Show in IMAP' box.
Now disable "Store draft messages on the server":
    6) Launch Mail.app.
    7) Select Mail > Preferences...
    8) Click on the "Accounts" button in the toolbar.
    9) Click once on the account name and then click the "Mailbox Behaviors" tab.
    10) Uncheck the "Store draft messages on the server" box.
    11) Close the window and opt to save your changes when prompted.
A few other Gmail / Mavericks Mail.app discoveries:
    * You must enable the "Show in IMAP" option for the "All Mail" label in Gmail if you had it disabled before. (Google this tip for explanations and ramifications.)
    * Mail.app now seems to automatically map the Sent, Junk, Trash and Drafts folders, i.e. you can't use this menu command anymore: Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For > Drafts / Sent / Junk / Trash
    * I used to add the "[Gmail]" prefix under the "Advanced" tab of my mail account to eliminate it from the IMAP view, but it doesn't seem to be necessary any more, and might even have been causing some weirdness.

  • Mailbox behaviors: Erase messages in the junk mailbox

For each of my POP accounts, I have the Mailbox behaviors setting for junk mail set to "erase messages in the junk mailbox when one day old." This works fine for any mail which the mail filter catches and sends to the junk mailbox. However, many junk e-mails are not caught, so I click on the "Junk" button, to designate those e-mails as junk. At that time, they automatically move to the Junk mailbox. But within the junk mailbox are sub-boxes for each of my POP accounts, and another sub-box called "On my Mac." That's where the e-mails end up that I mark as junk, and they remain there forever. How do I tell Mail to automatically erase that junk mail after one day (or on whatever schedule I desire)?

    466 MHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Well, the Mailbox Behaviors settings are specific for each account, and the On My Mac Junk mailbox isn’t associated with any mail account, so there appears to be no way to specify such setting for that particular mailbox.
The thing is, the whole situation you’re describing doesn’t really make sense. If those messages end up in the On My Mac Junk mailbox, that means you’re manually marking them as junk after they’ve been moved to a custom “On My Mac” mailbox, which makes me believe what’s really happening here is not that many messages aren’t caught by the junk filter. What appears to be happening is that you have custom rules that prevent the junk filter from being able to catch them...

  • Mail not saving changes in Mailbox Behaviors

For one of my accounts since the upgrade to Mavericks when I enter the Mailbox Behaviors section, I found that Drafts, Junk and the one under Trash named Store Deleted messages on the server is checked.
I uncheck them because I doon't want them checked. I Save the changes I made then go back to that account and the same ones I just unchecked are now checked again. Its not saving what I just unchecked.
    What the heck is wrong?
Also noticed that in OSX 10.8 I could drag all my email accounts to a different order than the way they are now listed. Can't do that now.

Thanks for discovering this issue being connected to drafts. I have trouble with this for a couple of months as well.
Since you assume it to be connected to "drafts", I suggest to deselect "Store draft messages on the server" for your IMAP-Account. I just did this for myself, to see if it helps, and can't give you results yet. Maybe you just wanna try simultaneously. I guess, the reason for our problem could me some messy communication between Mail and the server, where one party get's confused.

  • Mailbox Behaviors Reverting to Prior Settings

I'm trying to set one of my MobileMe mail accounts not to display Notes in the Inbox.  I go to Preferences>Account> Mailbox Behaviors and uncheck the box for "Show Notes in Inbox", but Mail reverts to the checked box next time I look at my mail and the Notes reappear in the Inbox.
How can I make this change permanent?

If the previous steps you tried did not resolve the issue you might want to think about a restore.
Here are a couple of articles from the apple support website that might help out.

  • Mailbox Behaviors will not save

Got two outlook.com mail accounts running IMAP in Mavericks mail (with November patch).
I Uncheck the two checkboxes in Mailbox Behaviors that save drafts and sent mails on the server. I move cursor to the other account, first account confirms I want a save. Saved.  Take a look, still unchecked.
Uncheck same items on second account, move cursor away to get Save confirmatiom. Save
Look at first account, check boxes are re-checked.
Change the first account again, second account boxed check themselves.
Repeat as often as I want, neither wil save permanently.
    Any ideas?

OK maybe this is the solution...   https://discussions.apple.com/message/23563857#23563857
EDIT:  Nope. still reverts to checked as soon as I save the other account.

  • Mailbox Behaviors - Deleting Messages

This is a simple question. And I'm fairly confident that I already have the answer, but I just wanted some clarification.
Do the options in the Mailbox Behaviors section of the Accounts tab refer to messages (and attachments) stored locally on my hard drive or on the email server? I have two POP accounts that are both set up in the Advanced section of the Accounts tab to not remove copies of messages from the email server. If the the options in the Mailbox Behaviors section do also apply to my messages stored on my email servers, then do those "delete messages after..." options override the option to not remove copies from the server? For my IMAP account, I have selected all options to store copies of messages on the email server and opted to download copies of all received messages and attachments for offline viewing. Again, do the Mailbox Behaviors options to delete old messages apply only to those stored locally on my internal hard drive or do they apply to the server or both?
I realize it sounds like I'm just splitting hairs, but I want to make sure that I'm deleting copies of messages from my hard drive but not from the vast reaches of my email server account storage spaces.

The options available under the Mailbox Behaviors tab for a POP type account are for the account's Sent, Trash and Junk mailboxes/messages which are stored locally on the hard drive. You can't store Sent, Trash or Junk messages on the server for a POP type account with any email client such as the Mail.app.
The options available under the Advanced tab for the account preferences for "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message:" refer to incoming messages or the incoming mail server for the account only.
The options available under the Mailbox Behaviors tab and the Advanced tab for a POP type account are not related and have no effect on the other.
If you have chosen to store deleted messages on the server for an IMAP type account, the options for "Permanently erase deleted messages when" apply to the server. If deleted messages are stored locally on the hard drive, the options do not apply to the server since messages marked for deletion are stored on the hard drive.

  • Mailbox Behaviors – Big Problem

In Apple Mail, under Preferences / Accounts / Mailbox Behaviors, I have set the Trash preferences to “Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox” and “Store deleted messages on the server” by checking the boxes next to those commands.
BUT, this is not happening. An accidentally deleted message (sent or received) is NOT sent to the Trash mailbox. And accidentally deleted messages are NOT stored on the server. They are permanently gone.
I know I am doing something wrong. But what? Does anyone have a clue? I need my Mail messages and have attempted to set up these backup processes so, when I make an error by accidentally deleting something, it remains on the server for access. Thanks for any and all help.

    Hello Jeff.
Select the Server Stored Trash mailbox for the account in the mailboxes drawer and at the menu bar, go to Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For and select Trash.
