Weird Artifacts Surrounding Menu Items & during movie playback

My Apple TV's picture was rock solid for the first month or so, but now when I watch movies I've synced to it--which were just fine before--I get loads of blocky artifacts, plus these horizontal lines of blue static. At first glance, the interface image looks fine, but if you play around w/ the menus it soon becomes clear that the same blue lines are surrounding many of the icons. Wiggling the HDMI cable has some effect on the lines, but disconnecting/reconnecting the cable doesn't change anything. When I use onboard photos as a screensaver, many of the photos have the blue lines framing them on all four sides.
Has anyone else experienced this, and are there any troubleshooting suggestions y'all might offer aside from "try a different HDMI cable"? I'm wondering if someway, somehow this could be a heat issue, since for whatever reason the Apple TV is hotter than the dickens, even though there's plenty of clearance around it and the room is very comfortably air conditioned.

Well, the HDMI cable that was in place was from Monoprice.com, where I buy most of my cables from--their prices are very low, but I've never had any quality issues with them before, and I'm sure there are many posts here recommending them. Still, I swapped out that cable for one that came with my Gefen HDMI switch, and now the problem has vanished. I'm going to use the Monoprice cable with my TiVo (where the Gefen cable used to be) and will see if there are any issues there or not. I'm crossing my fingers in the hope that there won't be...

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

Apple TV 2 - Not synching correctly during movie playback

Hi all,
Recently bought the new Apple TV and have set it up fine. During some movies playback I notice the picture starts to jerk and then the sound is about 1-2 seconds ahead of the picture. To rectify this I have to pause the video, then play. When I pause, I can see the video playing catchup to whichever point in the sound I paused it at.
Is anyone else having this issue? Or does anyone know what the cause of this issue is?
The movie plays fine on my iMac with no synching issues. Im assuming its because my iMac is running and using its processors at that given moment. Some of my movies are MKV files encoded to MP4 via Handbrake.
Some help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It could well be because your Mac is heavy on resource usage running handbrake which will use as much CPU power as is available to do the job.
Having said that I've seen this occasionally with ATV1 and ATV2, and recently I've wondered if it's iTunes doing something else eg automatically downloading a subscription podcast, and effectively freezing to other processes like AppleTV streaming as it saves a podcast to disc.
The other obvious candidate is the network not quite keeping up with streaming demands and running slightly behind.
Try playback without Handbrake or other intensive processes running - does it behave better?

3G nano cuts to menu during movie playback...

Whilst watching a movie on my iPod nano, it frequently just cuts out and returns back to the menu without holding the position of where it was last at...
very annoying...
I'm up to date with all the latest software downloads, so I'm struggling to see what the problem could be. I've seen this posted up a couple times in a similar vein, but I'm wondering if it's a bug or just my unit...
Also, any idea on fixes would be great...

same problem here. at first i thought i hit the back button, but no. even if that happened, i would be able to restart the vid at the point it stopped. but it resets to the beginning of the movie. it is in the right format, and my software is up to date. i thought this was maybe a setting, like a sleep mode or something, but its not.

TV Out Turns Off During Movie Playback !!!!!

OK Apple got my $200.00 and now no video playback on the TV....
I got my cable (You know the one with USB and 3 RCA's on one end) Plugged into the 4G and my TV. I go to settings in the video menu and select (TV OUT YES) (NTSC)and (Wide Screen). Time to play the movie right... NO! it only plays for a few seconds and the turns the TV OUT to OFF all by itself...
Next hook up sister's Classic to same cable and it works great!
Great little product (POS) and the best part is I checked apple.com for support and nothing just this forum where you might find help if really lucky!
So iPod wizards change my mind on this thing and help me figure this issue out if possible

Note that there are several different ways that an iPod or Nano can support TV output, depending on the iPod model & type of connection. The charts at iPod and iPhone: TV out support may be of some help with this, but it still can be confusing, depending on which of the two Apple docks with very similar names you might have used, or if you used any third party connection products.
Because of this, it probably would be best for each of you asking for a solution to describe in detail which items you used in your connections, & which of the TV's video input jacks that you plugged the output connectors into.

Black screen during movie playback

I have three downloaded movies in my iTunes library - 2 that I purchased several years ago on a previous computer and re-downloaded onto my new computer from the cloud (when I was living in the US) and one that I rented just recently and downloaded to my iTunes (now I am living in Tanzania, so that took quite some time to download). When I try to play any of them through iTunes, the screen is completely black, even though the movie timer is ticking down as if it's actually playing. No sound, no picture.

I am deployed in Iraq and have only my 1st gen iPad with me. I purchased 4 movies via iTunes however, the internet here is very bad and there were a ton of interruptions so it took almost 4 days to complete all the downloads. When I started watching one of my movies, it froze and the display went black. I to tried a restart first on the video application and then on the iPad itself to no avail. It wasn't until I reset all settings in the general tab of the systems settings did the video application start responding but if I tried to play the same move, it would do it all over again. When I go to iTunes and do a check for downloads, nothing is there however, I believe that with all the interruptions, bits were missed in the download process and iTunes simply cannot detect it. Also, if I do delete the movies in question, I will have to buy them again because the iPad hasn't been synced to my computer thus no transfer has taken place. Apple either provide a workaround for re-downloading movies free of charge to iPads or refund us our money for content that you have failed to deliver.....

Keynote quits during movie playback

I use Keynote 6.5.2 for presentations in my classroom on my Mid 2010 Mac Mini (10.10.2). Over the last month, whenever I play an imbedded movie, Keynote will randomly exit at any time in the movie to the desktop. It looks similar to following a hyperlink, only Safari does not open. The green "resume" arrow on the Keynote icon is visible on the dock and will return me to the movie, but it will start the movie over. Could anyone please offer a solutions to this annoyance?

I figured out that deleting the quicktime-cache should help. I tried it. Now I can watch converted videos, tv-series without proplems.
But iTunes still freezes when I want to watch a movie rental, when direct3d acceleration is of...

Itunes 10.1.2 freezes during movie playback

I have several movies that were purchased through the itunes store.
I can't play them using my macbook air 11.6
The first part of the movie will play, then the video and audio will lock up (not comfortable on your ears when this happens)
Opening / closing itunes does not correct this problem.
I've also repaired permissions on my disk.
I am also unable to skip forward on any of my movies. It will play the first chapter then lock up.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

First try running software update, itunes 10.2 was released last week. If that does not solve your problem then go to ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist and drag that plist file to your desktop. Then restart iTune and try again.

Can I disable display of titles & blue bar during movie playlist playback?

During movie playback from a playlist, my AppleTV briefly displays the name of each movie it encounters in the bottom left corner of the screen. At the same time, the blue scroll bar briefly appears.
Most of the time I like this behavior, but is there some way to disable it for when I don't want to see it?
For example, I'd like to be able to set up my AppleTV for a movie party and simulate on old-time drive-in movie program. I want set up a playlist to show clips of coming attractions, homemade commercials, the feature presentation, etc., and not have the titles and blue scroll bar flashing on the bottom of the screen each time the AppleTV encounters the next clip during playback. The flashing titles & the blue scroll bar are very distracting in this case.
If there is no option to disable this behavior, then I hope it gets added to the feature wish-list for a future update.

i don't believe there is any way to turn it off.

IPhone 4 rebooting during video playback

My new iPhone 4 is rebooting whenever I play a video. It can be a Youtube, a podcast or a video I recorded with the camera. Sometimes it does it a minute or so into the video, sometimes when the video ends. I am also getting artifacts on the screen during video playback. Any help? I have Genius Bar appointment this weekend to see if they have a solution.

Went to Genius Bar and it was a hardware issue. Brand new iPhone 4 in my pocket.

Question: Apple TV Movie playback freezes very briefly but frequently

Last night I rented a couple of HD movies from iTunes on my 160GB Apple TV and watched them. During playback there were quite a few very brief instants of the picture freezing during movie playback. It's the kind of thing some people may not notice (I don't think my wife noticed), but it got to be kind of annoying to me, to the point where I was anticipating it to happen again instead of enjoying the movie!
One of the movies was about 80% downloaded when I started to watch it, although it said it was "Ready to Play." Also, the hard drive on my Apple TV is about 3/4 full with music.
Anyone have any idea why this would be happening and is there anything I can do to fix the problem?

Strange ATV2 behaviour - Movies can't be selected for downloaded & most menu items not selectable??

ATV2 fully online, previews movies, downloads YouTube, Homesharing all good (and a seasoned ATV owner and user)
However download movies is not working, and no error message just a "beep" sound when you select "rent movie".
Also many of the menu items cannot be selected. You cannot down select most of the items under General, so it's impossible to change settings, or to do any troubleshooting. You get the same "beep" sound when you select Name, Network, iTunes Store, Reset, etc.
I have done the usual power down, plus reset using remote, but the system doesn't seem to go back to factory default. I haven't tried the mini-USB connection to MAC as I don't have a cable but hoping someone can help?

Very puzzling that I have only seen the bad behavior on Win8.1, and not when debugging the extension. (Haven't been able to try the extension on Win8, but have tried it on several Win7 computers, and one WinServer 2012 R2 computer.)
Is there someplace to look for runtime exceptions? I haven't seen any in the Output window when the bad behavior occurs....

Menu item moves in active state

I'm using the "Right Icon" to implement a long vertical seperator between menu items:

I've deleted the Rollover, Mouse-Down and Active states of the menu items. But when a menu item becomes active - it move put by 20 pixels or so. Any idea on how I can fix this?

From looking at the navigation on the site and the corresponding code, it seems you are using a Composition Widget rather than a Menu Widget. The code generated for the Industries link is different than the others as if in its case, the link was applied to chunks of text/content inside the trigger rather than the trigger itself. Recreating that particular item in the composition and applying link just like others should apparently fix this. I would appreciate if you could send your current .muse file to [email protected] along with a reference to this forum thread and mark it to my attention in the Subject? If the file is larger than 20MB, please use an online file sharing service such as WeTransfer or YouSendIt.

Why does my Desktop Mouse freeze (moves erratically) when selecting menu items in PSE13 Editor?

It seems that my computer with 8GB of memory may not be enough to use PSE13. The Organizer menu works fine when I select menu items. The problem is when I switch to the Editor. My mouse starts to freeze, move fast, or too slow. It is difficult to select
a menu item in this situation.

Unusual. In theory PSE13 should be better as it's a 64 bit application.
Can you try re-setting the prefs then close and re-launch the Editor. First you need to go to:
Edit >> Preferences >> General
Then click the button shown on the image below.
