Weird Audio Editing Issue: Importing Room Tone causes beeps on timeline

Okay, I'm fairly new to Final Cut so I'm sure there's a simple fix for this I'm just missing, but I need some help. I'm working on a nearly complete sequence, using the audio mixing set-up. I tried to import room tone to tracks 7 and 8, and for some reason, whenever I do this, these thin red bars appear in intervals at the top of my timeline, and when I do play back, everytime the playhead hits these red bars, I get two beeps. I can't figure out how to get rid of it. Any suggestions on what's causing this?
-Jett

More than likely you need to increase the number of tracks fcp can monitor in real time. This setting is in user settings: general under real time audio mixing. Try increasing the number of tracks.
It's also possible that this roomtone settings don't match your sequence settings or are in a heavily compressed format such as mp3. If so, use compressor to convert your tracks to 48k 16 bit (probably).

• Audio Filter to Remove Room Tone

I filmed a seminar and on one take the sound did not go through the board. It only went through the camera-mounted shotgun mic thirty feet away from the speakers and not through the lav mics. Can anyone tell me which filter is best to remove some of the room tone and make the speakers sharper?
Thanks!

I've been in your situation. Sometimes it's unavoidable when filming a documentary. I think Bias Soundsoap does a terrific job in removing noise and am more than happy to plug them. There's also a pro version which I'm sure is way better than what I've got. But the standalone plugin can be used with most audio editing software, including STP. You might need to order the CD, I'm not sure if you can buy direct download. Check it out here:

After removing noise, and adding a little EQ, I think you'll be very surprised (and hopefully pleased).

• Audio editing issue- remove ambient room noise

I am doing an audio run thru of my short program (puppets, etc). We had to do some VO work and have noticed the ambient room noise varies from scene to scene. On some it is OK, but others it is quite noticable. Is there a filter I can apply to control that? FC6 Thanks!

If you did this properly and sent it from within fcp, when you save in soundtrack pro and switch back to fcp, it should update properly. Then compressor and into dvdspro

• Captivate 4 - audio editing issue (distortion heard once published)

Hi -- I am working on a 17 minute movie with audio on each page (total project size about 60mb).  I recorded the audio outside of Captivate and imported the .wav files (for some reason the .mp3s sounded too tinny).  When I started the project in November I had no problem editing the files (removing sighs/pauses, inserting silences) and adding to the slides.
For some reason in December I started running into issues.  I would go to edit a sound file on a slide, it sounded good when played back, but when I previewed or published the sound file I just edited it would have a layer of sound on top of it making it distorted.  Also, I no longer have the ability to add silence at the beginning and end of the audio file (which I was able to do in November).  I add it in edit mode, can see/hear the pause but when I save and close out those beginning and end silences disappear.
I just got final feedback and was making adjustments on two slides but the same thing happened.  The audio files I edited would sound distorted when played back in swf form.  The only way to save the project was for me to open an old archived version, export that audio, re-import to my production project and it worked fine.  But I cannot edit it in Captivate.  If I do, the distortion gets added.
I am publishing as audio quality: MP3, 96kpbs, 44.10 KHz.
Any thoughts?  I like to edit directly in Captivate and don't want to have to do the extra step of editing the audio in another application.
Thanks!

Hi there
If you want to add silence at either end, your first step will need to be to position the playhead ever so slightly away from the true end or beginning. Otherwise, Captivate ever so helpfully discards the silence. So the silence needs to be inserted between the ambient noise.
Actually, this is a nice segue into a technique you may wish to use. Select a section of the ambient noise and paste it repeatedly. This will eliminate the "dead air" you hear with total silence. Sometimes inserting silence is one of those - "the cure is worse than the disease" sort of things.

• Suffering weird audio loss issue on ATV3

I recently purchased an Apple TV 3rd gen and hooked it up to my new Panasonic plasma. Whenever I try to stream something, be it Netflix, home sharing or iTunes Trailers, I get random losses of audio. The audio usually cuts out for less than a second every now and then, but sometimes it gets really bad and these losses come in rapid pace, making it practically impossible to hear what's going on. I have not had any issues when watching cable. This is only when I use the Apple TV.
I've heard many possible theories, but can't seem to narrow it down. Some say the 3rd gen has some issues with formating audio, while others say it might be a buffer issue with the wireless router, but the video is never affected (though the quality of the video stream from Netflix is pretty terrible).
Anyone else experience this issue?

Stopping and restarting Flash automatically when display is toggled may be unique to Firefox. Neither IE9 not Chrome 29 appears to do it on this test page: [http://www.jeffersonscher.com/forumshots/toggle_display.html]. If there is a way to prevent Firefox from doing that, I'm not aware of it.
But you can use a Greasemonkey userscript (or if you prefer, a Stylish userstyle) to prevent the script from hiding videos, thus avoiding the problem. A test version is available here: [http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/177648]. It adds this to Tumblr pages to override the page script's addition of display:none to posts:

• Audio Editing Issues

Hi
Has anyone worked out something for these situations?
1: I have source footage with 2 tracks ... dual mono... wireless mic 1 and wireless mic 2.  I edit the clip into a Project (set up as Stereo out) and need to balance the two audio clips. I can select the clip ... set it to Dual Mono in the inspector... and Pan Left/Right.  But to adjust the levels of the individual channels it seems I have to right click on the clip in time line  and select "Open In TimeLine". Now I see the 2 channels. The Format settings need to re-set to dual Mono and pan settings to Stereo Left / Right .... now I can Pan the tracks and set a Level Envelope curve for each on the timeline... but can't hear the rest of the Program Mix!!!
Is there a way to just get all of  clips's audio tracks to show in the Main Timeline. Expand doesn't seem to do it? Seems soooo basic.
2: If Im editing video and audio into the timeline how do I choose which audio tracks to edit into the program. I see how to select Audio / Video or both .... but if I just want one track?  Do I have to keep switching audio tracks on and off in the Source clip via the inspector?
Thanks
Lee

Unless you can balance the two channels in the separate timeline and then mix the combined tracks in the main timeline you don't have a good solution. You can break the clips apart in the timeline, but be warned there is no way to put them back together again short of putting each clip into a compound clip and having to open and close it to work with it. It also creates other editorial limitations.
2.  Afraid so. You can also switch tracks off and on for ttimeline clips in the inspector.
Audio is very limited in FCPX.

• Canon cameras have audio sync issue with FCP?

My mini dv deck died on me so,
I am using a small palm size Canon mini dv firewire camera to transfer about 50 tapes.
I am having a weird audio sync issue.
Sometimes the capture footage plays down in sync - I pause>scroll>play - and it's suddenly out of sync. This keeps happening. Sometimes it plays in sync. Other times it does not.
Because it's hit and miss- I'm not sure I can even re-sync.
I imagine it could be the media drive (internal)- but I have other video files on this drive that play fine.
I don't often use firewire capture.
Is audio sync a common firewire issue?
Will the quality suffer if I capture through composite/analog audio outputs?
I can patch it through my
decklink card.

Audio sync is an issue with Firewire, just not all the time. Usually it is fine, but a lot of Avid people don't like Firewire for this reason.
Most often it is a 5 frame sync issue. Slip your audio 5 frames forward and see if that solves the problem.
As well, take a look in your Browser after you capture a clip and see if the Aud Rate is either 48,000.5 Hz or 47,999 Hz. I have seen the clips come in as both of these. Once you slip the footage, export the audio only, then reimport and attach the audio to the clip in the timeline. Should take care of it.
Post back if these don't work.

• Adding "room tone" before or after a slide's existing audio

As a result of my experience in video production, the steps I
use to create my Captivate 3 software application demos are:
(1) rehearsing my software application scenarios in advance
(2) scripting my voice-over narration tightly
(3) recording my narration into a separate high-quality
digital recorder
(4) editing my voice-over in a separate audio editing program
(and, at the end, converting the files to .wav format)
(5) creating a silent Captivate 3 project of the application
scenario
(6) then, adding in my narration to individual slides -- or a
span of slides -- anchoring my timing to either the duration of the
slide/animation or the audio utterance, whichever takes logical
precedence.
Sometimes, I find that I need to slip the audio to let an
image hold a little more than the length of the utterance, which
results in a short span of dead silence at the start or end of the
slide event. Though this dead silence may not be noticeable on
speakers, it is very noticeable when listening with headphones --
which I believe must be the standard for any Captivate program.
In video, one remedies this by cutting in "room tone" to
replace the completely dead silence (absence of signal).
THE QUESTION: Captivate doesn't allow you to simply drop
another audio file into the time line (ahead or after the existing
audio clip). Complete replacement of the audio is all it allows.
Can a Captivate expert please advise me? I'm just learning
Captivate, but have a lot of expectations from the video process
that may simply not apply!

Hi Myron and welcome to our community
From your Film Strip, click the Speaker icon and choose
Edit... to open the Captivate audio editor. Once there, you should
be able to select part of the "Room Noise" and press Ctrl+C to copy
it to the Windows clipboard. Then you may paste it wherever needed.
Does this help? Hope so... Rick

• Captivate 5 freezes up any time I try to record, edit, or import audio

I'm using Captivate 5 to create a CBT. When I try to record, edit, or import audio to the slide the program just freezes. When I end the program through my computer's task manager, it says that Captivate is waiting for a response from me. I can not click on anything after I select Audio > Record > Slide. After I reopen the Captivate I can access the Audio Settings with no problem however. Why is Captivate doing this and how can I fix it?

OK. My next guess would be that there is some corrupted element in your project that is preventing compiling from successfully completing.
Next thing to try is use a process of elimination to locate the offending object.
First try copying and pasting all slides from your problem project into a new blank project.  This will rename all objects in all slides and strip out any Advanced Actions, but if your issue is due to either of those, then it should immediately be able to compile.
If that doesn't work, try hiding all slides and just unhide them one at a time to see if it will compile.  If you go through your project a few slides at a time, you may eventually find the offending slide and then whittle it down to the offending object.

• Why does embedded video cause audio sync issues?

Greetings all,
I have a question that is perhaps best answered by an Adobe developer or someone who knows the SWF file format and various audio/video standards fairly well. When one drags an FLV file into the library in flash authoring tool, a window appears. If you click "Embed FLV in SWF and play on timeline", an awful message appears, "WARNING: Embedded video is likely to cause audio synchronization issues...". My question is: why would there be any audio synchronization issue? Is this really just a bug/unimplemented feature? Or is there some fundamental shortcoming of current versions of the SWF file format that does not allow for the FLV audio/video signals to be properly encoded in the SWF file? Or is it that the flash player plays SWF and FLV data in fundamentally different ways and that even if the audio/video is perfected sync'd in the SWF file, the fact that it's a SWF file causes flash player to lose sync?
I'm guessing only a Flash developer could answer this (and probably not just any Flash developer!), so if there are any out there, please spare some wisdom for a poor lost SWF surfer.
       Thanks!

Hi:
Welcome to discussions!
From what I am reading, you are trying to use the audio that was in the original video-right? By that, I mean, you haven't added a voice over or music-just using the speaker's voice on the tape.
If so, you might want to try using something like a Fade Out or Fade In instead of one of the transitions that add or subtract to the length of the video
[Quoted from iMovie Help]
Some transitions (for example, Cross Dissolve and Push) shorten your movie by a few seconds, depending on the speed of the transition. For example, if you add a transition with a speed of 2 seconds, iMovie overlaps 2 seconds from the first clip and 2 seconds from the second clip as it renders the transition. This shortens your movie by a total of 2 seconds.
The Overlap transition freezes the last frame of the clip on its left and superimposes it over the next clip. Fade In/Fade Out blackens the last frames of the clip on the left and the first frames of the following clip.
[End quote]
Or you could try extracting the audio from the movie so that you could edit it and sync it that way.

• Audio editing across tracks after OMF/AAF import problems

Hi there,
I'm having difficulty getting my head around the way STP handles multiple-mono audio files.  I'm lucky enough in my job to have a choice of audio editing tools for what I'm working on.  For speech I use SADiE, for more complex projects involving automation I'll often use ProTools & for podcasting I find that STP is pretty good - especially for enhanced podcasts with pictures & web-links etc.
So now to my problem.  I've brought an OMF project, from ProTools, home to work on in STP. The import went smoothly, every thing in the right place & sounds ok.  However, all the stereo audio files are now split across 2 tracks; 1 track for the left leg another track for the right leg.   I can't now edit the stereo content in any easy form.  I've tried using the 'blade all' tool to cut across the 2 tracks, but I can't then delete & ripple the audio.  This leaves me with a gap that I have to manually close.  Needless to say, I'm finding this frustrating as it's making what should be a simple process un-neccessarily long-winded.
Both ProTools & SADiE allow me to group files like this so that they can be treated like a stereo file.  I've looked everywhere, but I can't see a function in STP that does the same.  Am I missing something obvious?  I can't be the only person who's had to deal with files like this can I?
The only workaround I've found is to use the export command to bounce the 2 tracks to a stereo file, however, this loses any existing edits so I can't unpick them if there are problems.
Any ideas anyone?  Can this be done or should I just stick to my other audio tools for this sort of thing?
Thanks

ProTools uses WAV, in fact it uses the Broadcast Wav standard. The problem is the way it handles files. It still splits stereo files into separate L & R files. It's just that it hides this from the user. When you drag a stereo file in from PT's region list (the equivalent of STP's bin) to the playlist, the two files appear as one as they should do. The downside is that OMF/AAF export still treats them as individual files.
My problem is that I was halfway through an edit when I tried to move it from one system to another. If the edit was complete & just needed mixing, then it would have been less of an issue.
But you're right, there's probably some tool on the net that will solve this issue
Cheers

I keep getting the message "macintosh hd disc full" when I try to edit or import video.  How can I make room?

You can go to Applications, Utilities, Activiy Monitor to see just how much space is available.  To free space you need to remove files that take a lot of space, things like videos, photos, music.  Get an external hard drive, OWC http://www.macsales.com has a good selection, and move material off the internal drive.

• Audio distortion issues

A few days ago, a project I have been working on for literally months began having audio issues.  e that the audio
First, I sometimes saw that the audio tracks for dialogue in my project started getting a distorted character to them (think Cylons from the OG "Battlestar Galactica").  This comes and goes and doesn't seem to be related to hardware, since I have been editing on two different machines: a MacPro and a Windows 7 station and have heard it on both.
The source files are not corrupted, as I have played them back through Adobe, Quicktime and Windows Media Player and verified they still sound fine.
A different issue, though, and more important at this point is this:
On tracks where there is no current clip, I have begun hearing distorted "phantom audio" during playback.  It seems as if the audio I am hearing is from a clip I have used later in the sequence on that track, as if I am hearing a badly muted/distorted playback of what would be playing if the entire clip were playing from beginning to end.
The audio clip mixer tab shows proof that there is audio on this channel, despite the sequence having no clip on that track during this part of the sequence.
I have tracked this down to particular tracks by soloing/muting to discover where it is happening.
A workaround so I can finish this project seemed to be just writing room tone from the shoot into the blank area of the offending track.  However, when I export the sequence, I have an awful, picket-fencing audio track now with non-peak distortion.
The problem seems to be getting progressively worse.
Premiere Pro CC 7.2.2 (33)
Windows 7 Professional running in 64 bit mode - Service pack 1
project audio:-
Format = 16 bit - Stereo
Rate = 48000 Hz
Compressor = 16-bit Big Endian
Audio hardware: Saffire Pro 14 (driver up to date -  version 4.1.4.18150)
No third party plug-ins on this project.
This problem is severe enough that I can't finish the project I am working on.  I am considering switching it over to Avid if I can't find a solution quickly.

Thanks for the recommendation.  I tried every audio configuration available to me on my system with the same results. (SB Audigy and Mobo audio, too).
My workaround, which worked for some reason, was to create a new sequence and copy and paste the old sequence into it.
Hopefully this stays stable long enough to output the project.

• HD is way to small to use as a source to import a ton of video

My original HD is way to small to use as a source to import a ton of video.
I went out and purchased a Western Digital FireWire MyBook 400 GB HD and hooked it up. I tried to import video directly to the external HD but if doesn't appear I can do this.Is it too slow? I connect my camera to the computer and the HD is connected through the other Firewire port.
Should I install the Mac OS and Final Cut Pro on the new Western Digital HD? Maybe
Should I buy a new internal HD and just install that.
If I buy a new HD do I need to install the OS and and FCP on the new HD.
Will I be able to burn a DVD effectively or should I move everything back to the main HD before I burn
Can I set the new HD as the new default HD and use my old one as the backup HD
Basically, I need a ton of help and would really appreciate any help you can offer

What are you capturing from?
Canon GL2. Plugged into my compute via FireWire Cable
Has the drive been formatted MAC OS EXTENDED.
No, how do you do this. I just took it out of the box and plugged it in.
Even though you have multiple FW ports, they run off the same bus. running multiple devices on one bus can cause problems (do a search here on the topic for all the reasons) The solution to this is to install a FW card giving you another bus, one for the HD and one for the capture device.
This doesn't sound like fun. I hope I don't need to do this
If this is your problem you might try to get around it by looping the camera through the drive (drive to computer, camera into drive) Sometimes helps.
SO connect the camera to the external HD and try to capture the video this way?
As a work around you could also try to capture to the boot drive (not recommended, but if your really stuck...) then transfer the footage to the FW drive for edit
IF I move the files will I need to pay particular attention to the audio and viedo when I import them into FCP or will they remain connected?
You won't need to install FCP or the mac OS on the external drive.
that's good
What kind of video are you trying to capture?
Standard DV from a Canon GL2 connected via firewire port to my computer.
Did you set up the new drive as your capture drive?
What kind of issues did you have when trying to capture/edit?
What happens when you try to capture to the external FW drive? eg dropped frames, error messages etc.
I went under FCP settings and set the capture location to be on the new FireWire HD. This is where I have an issue. It doesn't pop up on the screen when I attempt to import it. Unlike when I import directly to my internal drive, where it pops up on my monitor and I can actually witness it importing. With the FireWire external HD it just stays black on the import window.
thanks for all your help

• Can't edit slide imported from PowerPoint in Cap 5.5

Hi - I'm running Windows XP.  I've created a new project from a PowerPoint (PPT) presentation (imported .ppt file, although it may have been originally created as pptx).  For the Advance Slide option I selected Automatically, and I unchecked the Linked checkbox.  I have successfully imported additional PPT slides into the project file, and I have been able to use the text to speech conversion option to create audio narration for several slides, so the project file seems to be working as usual, and is not overly large (only about 6 mb).  I can also open the temporary PPT editing environment and make changes to an imported slide by using right-click and selecting Edit with Microsoft PowerPoint/Edit Slide.  But after I click the Save button in the temporary editing window, I never return to the Captivate project file window - Captivate hangs up.  I've waited as long as ten minutes before using Task Manager to end the process.  Does anyone have any thoughts about what can cause this, and/or what I am doing wrong?  I have already uninstalled a trial version of Articulate (before uninstalling it, I was not able to import additional PPT slides into my project, but uninstalling didn't fix the editing issue).  I suppose I could work around this problem by importing corrected slides into the project file and deleting the originals I'm replacing, but I'd like to be able to get this to work right if possible.  Thanks.

I didn't use it because of comments I've read by developers who've had problems with the Linked function.  You don't need to select the Linked function to edit an imported slide in Captivate, though, do you?  I thought unlinked slides were imported into the project library, and that you can edit them there.  Have I misunderstood how this works?
