Weird audio pan behaviour?

Hi all,
I recently noticed that when you add an audio keyframe to an audio track, the pan goes from -1 to 1 all by itself. When I add a second audio keyframe, the pan switches back to -1 and I get a nice diagonal automation line.
Am I having trouble here or shouldn't any parameter stay as it is unless the user decides the change it?
And shouldn't the pan be on 0 by default? Pan equals balance?
Any suggestions?
Thanks

shouldn't the pan be on 0 by default? Pan equals balance?
Not always. That IS the way it is for a mono clip: 0 = center, -1 = left and 1 = right.
But for a stereo clip, the default setting is -1, which means that the left channel will be output left and the right channel will be output right. A setting of 0 means that both channels will be panned center (making the pair mono) and a setting of 1 means that the channels are swapper; left channel is routed right and right channel is routed left.
MONO CLIP PAN SETTINGS:
-1 = left output
0 = center output (default)
1 = right output
STEREO CLIP PAN SETTINGS:
-1 = Channel 1 routed left, Channel 2 routed right (default)
0 = both channels panned center
1 = Channel 1 routed right, Channel 2 routed left

  • Is this normal audio meter behaviour? Seems a little funky to me...

I've seen some strange audio metering behaviour in the past so delved into it a little...
I created a sequence with two 'standard' tracks and cut in mono tone to both tracks.
I panned A1 to the left (in the clip mixer) and A2 to the right
I increased the gain on the A1 clip by 10dB for identification purposes.
When I mute A2 I get the following on the meters:
and everything appears as I would expect. A1 is a stereo track, but is panned left so only has audio showing on the left leg - and this is replicated on the A1 track mixer meter and on the master output meter on both the track mixer and the main meters. All good so far.
When I unmute A2 and mute A1 I get the following:
again all as expected, this time on the right leg.
When I unmute A1 and listen to both tracks I get the following:
Now the master output metering is correct but I do not understand why the right leg of A1 clip & track mixers are showing level, nor the left leg of A2. Bug?

    Hi Tofig,
As you rightly said, this behaviour is by design.
As far as I understand, the owners need not be given the approver permission considering them to be mostly from technical background.  They may not necessarily be good at content authoring and design and keeping them away from the approver group may
avoid any language related goof-ups (punctuations, grammatical errors etc.)
On the other hand, if they are good at content authoring, the site owners can be included in the Approver group, to avoid getting this message.  This message also goes away once any of the user under Approver group, approves the changes.

  • Built-In Audio Panning L&R malfunctions, system prefs.

I have noticed on my own Mac, as well as my peers' computers which include iBooks, PowerMacs, iMacs, and even a new MacBook pro, that the audio coming from the Built-in audio card will randomly be panned completely to the right, or the left.
A quick troubleshoot will lead you to find that in the system preferences the panning slider is set to the right or left, an undesirable setting.
All of the computers I mentioned are running the latest updated versions of Tiger, 10.4.6, and with the exception of my self running Pro Tools, none of the other computers mentioned are running any third party audio interfaces/cards or software that uses audio other than the applications included with Tiger: iTunes, iChat, Quicktime, Safari, etc.
Unfortunately there is no Lock in the audio system preferences, which could potentially be a quick fix to the problem because if an application like iChat had a bug which caused audio panning, the lock in system prefs. would prevent that..
    I am quite boggled.
    question:
What might be causing this, and is there a solution?

Thanks for the response guys. It seems we're in the same boat.
The problem is intermittent on my machine . It has occurred three times since I bought it. The fist time it lasted for a day and a half. I rang Apple support and went through a number of steps until the P-RAM suggestion which seemed to fix it. A few days later it disappeared again and resetting the P-RAM had no effect. My wife continued to use the computer (without sound) and some hours later it came back after a restart (she only restarted it because she is in the habit of shutting down instead of using sleep). The problem occurred again. That time I restarted the machine a number of times, with and without the external speakers plugged in, with them turned on and off etc. This had no effect. I gave up. Some time later my wife went to use the computer and it came back. I now believe that the P-RAM solution that seemed to fix the problem the first time was just a coincidence.
I rang Apple support again and they gave me the following steps (A,B & C of which I went through the first time the problem occurred):
A: Log in through another account and see if it had the same problem.
    - The built-in audio was still missing.
B: Run the disk utility on the hard drive (after booting from installation DVD).
    - There were nil problems on the HD, but it did not fix the problem.
    C: Reset the P-RAM.
    - This worked the first time though it has not worked on subsequent re-occurrences of the problem.
    D: Do an Archive Reinstall.
    - I did this today; though the built-in audio was working, I just wanted to complete the suggestions the Apple support person gave me. The problem has not reoccurred yet, but it has only been a few hours. I will be using the computer as much as possible tonight to see if the problem reoccurs.
If the problem reoccurs I'll be taking the machine in for warranty repairs, or better still replacement.

  • Lion Installed: Internal speakers muted and cannot be adjusted thru the audio pane.

I installed Lion yesterday and spent considerable time looking for an online solution to no avail.
The online info suggests to re-install the OS from the disk supplied with the laptop, but would be re-installing Snow Leopard... mmm
The quick fix is the plug headphones into the audio jack and wait a few seconds. The audio pane becomes active as it should. Remove the
    headphones... the audio functions normally.
If you turn the laptop off... you must repeat the process until a future release of Lion.

Same problem here: I cannot control audio volume and Preference Panel said I've not an audio out device. the funny thing is that I can hear music from iTunes.
I've tried also to reset PRAM.

  • Audio Pans Grayed Out

    Hey everyone,
My audio pans are grayed out, not sure why. I never encountered this problem before and wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to un-gray them.
    Thanks,
    Rob

To get audio from my pans I use Calphalon cookware...sorry
I'm not clear on what you're asking about (ie panning from the timeline, panning from the Audio mixer).
What I can suggest though is double clicking the audio track to launch it in the viewer where you will have a great deal of control with your pans.

  • Weird audio problem during calls

I have a weird audio problem and was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem or could help...
My wife and I both have iPhone 5's and sometimes (not all the time) when she calls me (or I call her), it connects, but no matter which audio input I choose (phone, bluetooth, speaker, headphones), I cannot hear her, but she can hear me... I hang up, call back (and when I call, there is no dialing sound, nor any other phone sounds) and it's the same thing. Sometimes restarting the phone works, other times I have to restart it 3-4 times before it'll work again.  I try different things during these calls, like turning on/off bluetooth and/or wifi (pretty much anything I can think of that would make a difference), but nothing seems to help.
The (other) weird part is that after the last time of this happening, I tried calling my iPhone with my office phone and it worked fine, so then I immediately call my wife back with my iPhone and it was doing the same thing again. I called her back using my office phone and could talk to her fine...
This problem has been going on for a few months now and I have tried restoring the phone a couple times (and I am on the latest iOS) and sadly, that hasn't done anything to help... Does anyone have any ideas what is going on? I'd make an appointment for the problem, but since it doesn't do it all the time, I don't know what good it would do... But it is getting very frustrating!
    Thanks for any help!
    -Jason

Thanks for the response!  It happened again yesterday...  It seems to be happening more frequently in the past few weeks now.
I checked the link and have tried all of the things listed at one point or another over the past few months.  I did just check my Carrier settings and it said it had updated (it's on 14.1), but I am not sure when that happened (could have been today, could have been after my last restore last week, not sure).  I'll keep my fingers crossed that maybe that fixed it...
If it continues to act up, would you recommend that I bring the phone in to an Apple store or an AT&T store?  I bought the phone through Apple, but my carrier is AT&T (and if you suspect that the problem may be with the cellular conection), maybe the AT&T store would be the better choice?
I really wish the problem would be more consistant or go away, cause trying to get the problem solved is driving me crazy!

  • Weird audio behaviour from merged clips... 5 channels into 25?!

    hello helpful community,
So, I have hand-synced quite a few clips for a project, and made sub clips by dragging everything into a bin.
The original audio files were .wav with 5 mono tracks, according to the modify clip window…
Now, after merging them, when I drag them into a new sequence to edit, the audio contains 25 channels, and the vast majority of them are blank… there is only audio on track 1,7,13,19 and 25.
Anyone fathom why 5 tracks became 25? I thought maybe each original track was a 5.1 track or something, so it split it into 25 mono tracks, but it says in the modify window that they are mono.
    Any help would be great.

    thanks for then pointer.
Seems others have had this problem.
Does manually deleting the additional audio tracks cause problems to propagate forwards? Any idea when this issue might be rectified?

  • Converted Project to CC 2014 mono audio panned.

I've just downloaded the PPCC2014 update but it has incorrectly interpreted all my mono files in my sequence as panned-left, when in the project previously pan was ignored in the mono files.
How can I ignore or remove panning from all the audio files in my sequence, without having to map to stereo? (Which is time-consuming and cluttered).
    Cheers,
    James

    Yes, Pluraleyes 3.
When they originally came through from Pluraleyes there was an issue with them also, but because it was at the beginning of the project I could easily swap out each clip simply by revealing in Finder and dragging the file into the timeline from Finder. But now I have a 3 hour assemble.
When I reveal in project, the mono audio files are not panned. So I can simply match frame and overwrite the timeline clip (thanks to PPCC2014's new Match Framing behaviour it's only a 2 key combination). But I'm not sure why the problem happened in the first place, and it would be easier if you could just remove panning, but when I go to remove effects "panning" is not one of them.
    Cheers,
    James

  • Audio pan issue?

This clip was recorded with one lav mic on the dance floor and one backup camera mic. So I've got them as a stereo pair for lack of a better plan. At one point, the audio drops out of the right side but I don't see it in the viewer pan settings. It fades back in shortly but the dropout is noticeable. I do see the waveform in the top clip, just a little smaller. Tried losing that side and making a stereo pair, but that would be a nightmare for this clip since I have a ton of tiny little audio clips from where the video was cut up, and I would have to go in and do join through edit on each one. Any idea what might be causing this issue? It could be the actual audio, but I don't think I did anything that would cause that. I'll check the source clip and see if the problem is there. maybe something weirded out when I was cutting up the video.

If it's in the waveform, it's in the media. Why would you have to go in and join a bunch of 'through edits.' If you have a lot of them then you can just overwrite the original piece of media (audio only if that's where the edits are). You can also single click a through edit and hit delete. Quicker than right click. <<<</div>
Yes that's right. I should have thought of that. Man! I think I've been staring at this #$%& project too long.
Thanks for the click and delete tip too.

  • Address Book - Weird text field behaviour

In Address Book when I try to edit any text field weird things happen.
When I start typing all the previous characters are repeated with each keystroke - for example typing "Thomas" would become TThThoThomThomaThomas". Pressing the backspace, delete or the ESC key repeats only the keystrokes made, i.e. "Thomas" would be added to the end of "TThThoThomThomaThomas".
If I click into another field and start typing it still remembers all the previous keystrokes and puts all of them in front of the key I just pressed.
Additionally, nothing can be typed in the notes field.
    I've tried deleting:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
    but that doesn't fix it.
Anything in ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book be the problem?
When I log in a a guest user this behaviour is not present.

It's good that you tried this on a different account. That suggests that the problem exists somewhere in your user account directory. I don't think anything in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ would cause this. Do you have any input managers installed? These might be in ~/Library/Input Managers/ or something like that. I've never installed one myself, so I am not certain where they are. I think if you find one, you can just remove it from that folder by dragging it out, and then restarting Address Book might solve the issue.

  • Weird audio/video offset/ "ghost copies" - please advise

    Hello everyone,
I'm helping a friend - who has no computer - with a video project, which I have assembled and post-produced for him from DV tapes in iMovie 09.
Things seemed to work out fine first, but we now run into increasingly bizarre audio/video offset issues, and I'm out of ideas.
The source material for this film (50 minutes) is circa 400 current video clips, 20 stills and 10 older (1999) material - to which we added circa 50 crossfades, 30 voice-overs and 20 music tracks here and there (which, I guess, makes this a mid-size project). We also slowed down a few clips to adapt timing.
    Here is what happens:
Around 40 min. into the project, I have muted the sound from quite a few clips and added a music track and voiceover.
Now when editing and previewing this project within iMovie, everything looks and sounds just fine: The sound from the original clips is muted, and the (music + voiceover) audio tracks play back as they should.
But once I export this movie (be it as a tiny 3GP clip or an iDVD project), these scenes will have a third, unwanted audio track added: the original sound from the clips following circa +one minute later+ in the movie - at full level, which is embarrassing, to put it mildly.
E.g., at 40:00, the original sound from the clip at 41:10 is audible with its full level - although both the clip at 40:00 and the one at 41:10 are muted within the project.
Now I tried everything I could think of.
I muted all the clips manually.
I separated the audio from the dubious clips and muted it again, just to make sure.
I threw out several of the older clips (coming from a VHS tape) used in this project.
The only effect this has is that these weird offsets/ "ghost" copies move around; they won't disappear.
I am out of ideas. So here I have an iMovie project which runs fine in iMovie itself - but once exported to iTunes or a DVD, it spits out additional audio material where it shouldn't. Very frustrating, and I cannot pinpoint the source.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26567 describes a similar problem, but this is a 2005 article referring to versions of iMovie and OS X long gone - and the fix it suggests (exporting 12 bit audio to an external FireWire camcorder in 16 bit and re-importing it) is not possible anymore with today's iMovie.
I would really appreciate if someone could gave me a hint what is happening here, and how to fix this problem.
    Thank you.

Are you using any speed effects? Like Fast motion or slow motion?
If you stick to the pre-sets (25%, 50%, 200%, 400%, etc.) sound is handled well.
If you create a custom speed (say 39% or 159%), then sound will be messed up.
I do in fact use such non-standard values for speed.
I will try to reset them and see what it does for the resulting movie.
(And isn't this the kind of bug we wouldn't expect in an Apple product?)
Anyway, thanks for now. I will report if this helps.

  • Weird audio issue when printing to video

I am attempting to dub a couple of old projects to tape using the Print to Video command (firewire connection to Panasonic DVX-100A MiniDV camera). I have used this method many times in the past with success. However, I have now tried two different projects tonight and had the same strange issue: The project plays back perfectly normally in the timeline, through the computer speakers, but when I Print to Video, there will be one part where a small audio "blip" can be heard. It sounds like either a snippet of tone or the sound of un-rendered audio... except it's all rendered.
Anybody have any suggestions? It's really weird that it plays back something different in Print to Video than it does in regular playback... Any help is appreciated.

That did it, thanks! I feel kind of dumb, I've never used that function before. Is that something I should have been doing all along? Anyway, thanks again. It's nice to get a response and have it work on the first try. So refreshing.

  • Weird audio issue pavilion dv6

    Hello,
I recently bought a pavilion dv 6 (HP DV6-6B50ED), but i have a weird problem with the audio. Sometimes, the laptop randomly starts using the speakers for sound, even when i have plugged in headphones. This happens at random. For example, yesterday i was watching a youtube video, with headphones plugged in. The sound was using the headphones. However, a friend of mine tried to contact me through steam chat. The calling sound used the speakers. After i accepted the call, the sound from the chat went through my headphones, while the sound of the youtube video suddenly started to use the speakers. This is very annoying, so is there a solution for this problem? Thanks in advance.
Operating system: windows 7 64 bit.

    Consider / Try:
Sound > Playback Devices [Speakers] - [Headphones] > Properties >
Advanced Mode > Section Exclusive Mode
CHECK / UNCHECK "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device"
CHECK / UNCHECK "Give exclusive mode applications priority"
It sounds like the various applications are fighting over the speakers and headphones.
    Good Luck!

  • Macbook Air weird audio problem?

    Hello all,
This is about an issue I have with my speakers, I realize there are alot of similar questions out there, but I have yet to find a solution, and since none of the cases I have read completely matched my situation I thought I might as well make a new post.
About a year ago my laptop (Macbook Air 2,1 late 2008) speakers suddenly gave out during a movie, I always assumed I blew my speakers because of the weird sound they made right before they died. Since then I have always used headphones or external speakers whenever I needed audio, but it does get a bit tedious at times..
Just recently I was browsing through my preferences when I noticed something odd. In the sound panel the output name was referred to as "Internal Speakers" but under output type it said "Headphone Port". Now, whenever I plug in my headphones or external speakers it says "Headphones" under output name and "Headphone Port" under type, which makes sense. But if it were just my speakers that are physically broken, shouldn't it still say "Built-In Output" under output type if the headphones are unplugged?
I was wondering/hoping that this might be some kind of software problem after all, and that it could still be fixed. Maybe somebody on the forums would be so kind as to give me their thoughts on this? Please note that I do not hear a chime on start up, I can adjust my volume just fine and there is no red light coming out my headphone port (I've had this issue before and was abe to solve it). I have already tried an NVRAM reset, but no luck..
Is there anything else I could try?
    Thanks,
    Genkakuzai

UPDATE: I performed an smc reset as well, the audio type change to "Built-in", but shouldn't it say "Built-in Out"?

  • Audio Pan -1 (minus 1) by default

In my timeline all of my audio in the interviews is shown as Pan -1, when I look in my STEREO tab. Any suggestions? I find it a bit inconvenient to change it all the time manually... And it isn't the first time it has happened.
    Thank you,
    Tim

This is not a suggestion - Do not change the setting. This is correct for Stereo audio. This puts the left audio track to the left channel and the right to the right channel. By changing it, you are causing it to not be correct stereo.
