Weird Banding with Noise Reduction Filter

Working on a night shot of a building and processed through ACR7.2 and forgot to reduce the noise - and opened in Photoshop. Went to Filter/Reduce Noise and immediately get wierd banding in the window blinds. This banding is there regardless of the noise reduction settings and could not get it to go away - See attached screen shot of before and after applying the filter. So I went back and opened the file again in ACR7.2 and applied the Noise Reduction there and bingo, noise level dropped and looked good with no banding. Looks like the Noise Reduction capabilities in ACR7.2 are way better than the Noise Reduction filter - but surely the banding should not be there; especially if images do not get processed through Camera RAW.
Running latest version of Photoshop CS6 (latest patches applied), Windows 7 x64 16GB RAM, Intel 4000 with latest drivers installed.  Camera file was ACR2 from Canon 5DMKII imported as a DNG file - then opened in ACR 7.2
Before Image Opened in Photoshop before applying the Noise Reduction Filter
After Image in Photoshop after applying the Noise Redcution Filter
Seems like a bug to me
By the way, the screen captures are from the image viewed at 100%
Mike

The aliasing effect you're showing is obvious, but are you saying the noise reduction operation also changed the color of the image?
I didn't think so.  Your "before" image appears several steps removed from your "after" image.
It would be best if you'd capture a "before" image of your entire display just before and just after applying the filter that causes the aliasing pattern, and also specifically describe or screenshot the exact parameters being provided to the filter causing the problem as well.
In general, if you're getting aliasing introduced into high detail / high frequency parts of your images, you might find it advantageous to work at a higher pixel count - i.e., change the output size in Camera Raw so that you're opening images at an upsampled resolution.  That's the only way I work, and I find it advantageous to have more pixels representing the image while editing in a lot of ways.

  • Neato Video Noise Reduction Filter

    Merry Xmas
A fellow filmmmaker has used the 'Neato Video Noise' plug in with pretty good success. Was wondering if anyone else out there has tried it?
I have some underexposed footage shot on a DVX100, (low daylight footage), which I tried tweaking with the FCP HSL Filter. But as you may know, the HSL Filter must be used carefully (sparingly), or it will cause grain.
Anyone know if Neato's Noise Reduction Filter works more efficiently?

No, there are no built-in noise reduction filters.
There are a number of free and commercial solutions out there ... the free ones are obviously worth checking out but less capable (try TMTS Noise Reduction and Smart Noise Reduction), of the commercial filters http://www.neatvideo.com/ and http://www.revisionfx.com/products/denoise/ seem popular.

  • Encore 2.0 Noise Reduction Filter Information

    Adobe Staff and Forum Members,
Would somebody please explain how changes in the noise reduction filter change video quality. It seems the standard setting is 30% and I don't have a manual with the trial version to understand what changes to make on order to best transcode older video. I'm waiting for my hard copy of Encore 2.0 now but in the mean time any information would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day!
    Thank you,
    Don

    > How much time does a change in the noise reduction filter have on transcoding time?
I don't have any hard data to quote, but it's significant (and also depends on whether you use CBR vs. VBR 2-pass). But offhand, I'd say the filter will at least double your transcode time. You may find the results worth the wait...the output preview should help you to decide this.

  • Noise reduction filter???

Does anyone know of a high quality FCP-compatible video noise reduction filter for HD footage? Is there even such a thing?

All of the software that works with this does this... soften the picture.
The controls are precise however, and I've used it with really low light footage to advantage.
Denoise is a video noise reduction filter plugin for FCP google it... render is awfully slooooooo. Color renders faster. free download of demo with big red x thru all footage I think. Lots more controls.

  • Need Noise Reduction Filter

I need to reduce some Noise or at least Reduce Colored Noise in some night shots of the Aurora. In Photoshop there is a neat Noise Reduction filter that allows one to do this... but I can't find anything in CS3 or 1.5 versions.
    Am I missing something here?
Is their a 3rd party software that will do this?

Will do... email me at [email protected] and give me your email (Soon as I'm going to kill that one... too much spam). I'll let you know. This is a huge project of remastering 17 hrs of Aurora footage... time laspse, color, levels... the whole works. May be months before I'm done.
Also... I just checked out their website. WOW...!!! Is it really that good? I'll be in heaven.
I see the Pro version lets you do HD Wide format... which I'll start shooting my projects in soon.

  • RAW conversion bug with Noise Reduction

    Hello,
I have found a serious bug in the RAW conversion when noise reduction is applied. When converting from two types of Canon RAW files (a CRW from a Powershot G6 and a CR2 from a 20d) I found that if you apply Noise Reduction to a RAW file on very low settings (the default setting in the NR function will produce this reliably) single-pixel lines appear at regular intervals throughout the image. Here is an example:
You can see several lines in this image:
    http://farm1.static.flickr.com/140/3821480263171e76604b.jpg
A 100% detail of which is here:
    http://farm1.static.flickr.com/179/382148021af6586d27eo.jpg
Has anyone else had this problem? Can someone from the Aperture dev team fix this?
    -Steve G

Well I find this filter is quite good in 'masking' block artifact that codec like xvid, or other low compression codec have. I only apply it if I find the block artifact is too much and I find this filter is less offending to my eyes than the block artifact.
In manual it said that if you have noisy video and want to lower the size then you can use this filter. It also blur the video a bit. But I suspect it is more than blur as I try gaussian blur in time line and the result is not as good. You can see the result as well. There is the tab between source and target and you can compare the result by togling between source and target tab.
BTW, anyone with 1 core, dual, or quad core, can you tried to encode with it? Just cancel it after few minutes as I want to see what is your processor utilization with this filter on. Also you can see how long does it take to process this video from the 'estimation time left'.

    greeting

Dark areas have less bits to encode their values so a single bit of noise is a higher proportion of the total value.
For the basis of the default processing, to match the human eye’s response to dark and light, darker areas are brightened more than bright areas, using a non-linear gamma curve.  This magnifies the noise in darker areas.
If you boost the brightness of dark areas using Shadows or Clarity, you are making that noise even more visible.   Think of brightening as digitally increasing the ISO.
Adobe’s noise-reduction is calibrated to the original photo’s ISO setting, not how much you have digitally increased the ISO by brightening it, so if you have magnified the noise by extreme processing, you may be beyond what maxing out the NR sliders are calibrated to remove.
Exporting sharpening will sharpen any remaining noise.
Are you using the Mask slider in sharpen to keep from sharpening the noise grain in the Detail section?  Use the Alt key while moving the mask slider to determine the optimal Mask level for a particular photo, where you can’t to have the edges indicated but not the wide areas of little detail.
It’s hard to guess what you’re seeing without seeing a screenshot.

  • Problem with "Noise dissolve" filter Motion 1.0.1/ psd transparency

    Hello,
sorry for my english but i'm writing from france...
So, this is my problem. If you want, try the same thing and you will see something ugly :
this is an example (not real files that i'm working on) :
I import a photoshop file with two layers in Motion. Layer 1 is just a pink color. Layer 2 is a copy of small portion of Layer 1 ( so it's the same color : pink ). I make this copy with a progressive border/selection of 2px (soft edge of 2px).
In motion layer 1 is under layer 2. Of course layer 2 have a transparency, because it's just a copy of small portion of layer 1.
When you look at the image, you just see pink color ( in fact there's two layer of the same color ). This is before applying the "noise dissolve" filter.
I apply the "noise dissolve" filter on layer 2 to make this layer appear in 300 frames. At frame 0 layer 2 is hidden by effect, at frame 300 the effect reveal the layer 2 with animated pixels (this is the "noise dissolve" effect). Of course, once again you don't see layer 2 appear because it's the same color than layer 1.
    BUT...
when layer 2 "appear", i can see a black (and ugly) border around the layer 2!
It seems that Motion make a soft border around a transparency object !
Maybe i don't understand something ? I try to change the settings of the alpha channel in the inspector when i'm selecting my imported image, but it doesn't change anything!
I try to make a progressive border/selection/soft edge of 0px ( it's like a hard edge i think ) on the layer 2 in photoshop. In Motion, it's better but i can see the black and ugly border again ( not so visible, but visible anyway).
Here is a capture of what i see with the effect applied (On left you have hard edge, on right soft edge.):
    http://perso.wanadoo.fr/elzef/motion.jpg
I hope you understand what i mean...
Somebody know about this problem ?
    Thank you

    G4 MDD Dual 867   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   and 9.2.2

    Hi Patrick,
    thank you,
    i set layer 2's alpha to pre-multiplied:
at the begining it's seems to be OK,
but at the middle of the effect the noise appears as white pixels, then disappear when come to the end.
At the end the soft border is not visible ( that's waht i want for the end) but the hard edge still visible - not so visible whan it was black, but still here.
I try to set layer2 alpha to "behind". It seems to work with the soft edge but don't work with the hard edge.
I will try again with the images of my real project and try to not use hard edge, maybe it's gonna work.
    Thank you very much

  • Photos with noise reduction filters applied shows too much noise in preview mode

The Noise Reduction filters do an impressive job in Lightroom, but the preview of photos when zoomed out is sometimes poor.
This becomes especially visible on photos with a high amount of noise reduction applied.
When zooming in to 1:1 I see that the noise reduction works as it should. Also when exporting the images the noise is removed as it should.
I wish the non-zoomed preview inside Lightroom was able to show the image with the noise reduction applied more correctly than in version 3.4.
    I'm using Lightroom 3.4 64-bit in Windows 7.
See samples of image with heavy noise reduction applied in 1:1 screen shot, and then a unzoomed screen shot of the same part of the image. As you can see the unzoomed preview contains much more noise than the zoomed image does.

I've had to encode with no noise reduction which is a shame, but have to get this DVD done.
Any ideas for the next one?
    Thanks
    Mark

  • Issue with shake reduction filter

I experience inconsistent results when using the camera shake reduction filter in Photoshop. On many occasions, I see *Poor blur trace. Click to apply* (see screenshot below). Is there anything I am doing wrong here? I am using Photoshop CC 2014 and this is an NEF file.

I think you have unrealistic expectations of the Shake Reduction Filter.
That photo is terrible;  it should be re-shot.   That is exactly what the message is telling you.
What I see there is NOT camera shake, but out-of-focus blur or soft-lens blur.  If you happened to be using one of the so called kit-lenses from Nikon, you should know by now that, compared to the better lenses by Nikon, the kit-lenses are literally garbage.  The same situation exists with the kit-lenses bundled with Canon cameras.
You're obviously on Windows, and I don't do windows, so that's all I can comment.

  • Soundtrack Pro on the fly noise reduction filter?

The microphone I use for voiceovers has some fuzzyness that I always end up having to clean up afterwards by taking a noise print sample and then applying the filter.  Since I am always using the same mic for this, is there a way to create a preset filter on the front end (as I am recording) so I don't have to go back and reprocess the noise reduction afterwards?  Basically I am looking for a way to create a microphone profile and apply the filter on the fly so I can streamline my work flow.
    Many thanks.

  • Adaptive noise reduction filter only applying to parts of a clip

    MAC 10.9.4
    3.5 Ghz 6-core
    16GB ram
    AUDITION CC
    PREMIERE CC 2014
This is happening over and over to me, along multiple projects and multiple clips.
I apply Adaptive Noise Reduction, and tweak the properties. It sounds great but then when I 'apply', the filter is only applied to about 50% of the clip.....meaning it sounds great when tweaking the filter, but after when it is actually applied, only parts of it will apply.
IE, If I have a 15 second and apply noise reduction.......It sill sounds while tweaking parameters. Then after I hit apply, seconds 1 - 4 will sounds great (filter applied) seconds 5-9 will sound awful like no filter has been applied, and seconds 9-11 will sounds great again, and 12-15 will sounds awful again.
There is def something wrong here., This never used to happen in CS6, ever. Only when switching to CC.

    Hi,
I have little use for/of the adaptive version of the noise reduction filters only because I want it ALL cleaner, so here is what I suggest: I left a very-detailed posting about "batch processing" in which I outlined using the the process version in the Waveform Editor. Give that post a read Re: How Do You Apply Process Effects To Multiple Clips In A Multi-Track?
Let me know if you need more help.

    Good day!
As far as I understand this Forum is dedicated to beginners’ problems with Photoshop.
Photoshop is not Photoshop Touch, so you may want to post on the appropriate Forum for that application.

  • Color Noise reduction with BxW

Just wanted to share what I have seen so far with this:
I sometimes use extreme HSL shifts with BxW images to achieve the tonal separation that I am looking for. This can lead to splotchyness, if taken toooo far. I just installed 1.4.1 and tried the color noise reduction filter for this (it was my most desired feature in the 1.4 update)
As of 5 minutes of playing with it I can say it works. It is not perfect, and it does cause a very slight softening of detail (very slight) But it definitely does help to remove a good bit of the aforementioned splotches.

Maybe this is snobbish, if so I apologize. I know that topics go off base sometimes...but this conversation has nothing to do with the topic I started. It should really have been it's own topic (for more than one reason. Maybe others need the info about slide shows, but would not look at this due to it's title).
Except for being about noise reduction it has nothing to do with what I wanted to hear other users comment on: The use of the color noise reduction slider with BxW images in 1.4.1
Again sorry if this is rude of me. I don't belong to too many forums and really don't know what the proper etiquette is here.

  • Audition CS6 crashes while running Adaptive Noise Reduction

    Hi everyone!
So that is the problem, I edit an audio file, run Adaptive Noise Reduction filter, and somewhere during the processing the computer just crashes. Sometimes it happens and sometimes not. I saw that computer showes up an alert message just before the crash but I wasn't fast enough to read what was written there. Recently I did a clean system install and have just some programs installed. Before system reinstall the problem was not there, although the program (audition) is exactly the same. What to do?

    Srivas 108 wrote:
The system is Win 7 64 Home Edition. It was working ok before. Maybe I should install all the updated? I hate to do that, my experience is that it slows down the system in the long run, but looks like I should do that.
I run the pro version, but it's basically the same. I've got all the updates installed, but I haven't noticed it slow down at all. Mind you, this is a fast system anyway. But if it's crashing, then installing updates won't fix that; you need a fresh reinstall on an absolutely clean disc first. Okay, that's a pain - but look on the bright side; you aren't running Windows 8. Recently I wasted nearly a day of my life on that, and I'll never get it back. The basic rule about M$ OS's hasn't changed - it's only the odd-numbered ones that are worth bothering with, as a rule. And none of them are worth installing until the first service pack is issued.
