Weird blocks on image after using adjustment brush in ACR

A group of people took an online webinar yesterday.  The instructor is a heavy Adjustment Brush user, in LightRoom.  After taking the class, many of the students in the group are reporting the appearance of weird blocks on images, after using the Adjustment Brush - both in LR and in ACR.  It is also happening to me.  I am a heavy Photoshop and ACR user - never before have I seen this.  The only thing I'm doing differently is using the Adjustment Brush (because of the webinar class, as it was part of the instructor's core teachings).  What could be causing this?

There was an adjustment brush bug in older versions of ACR. I first reported it here, and Eric Chan acknowledged the problem. It went away in future releases. Sorry, I can't remember what version numbers were involved.

  • Using adjustment brush at 100 % image size

I have been using the adjustment brush in ACR ver 8.1 in CS6 & CS6cc.  I can use the brush to place the mask but would like to be able to touch up the mask at 100%.  This requires that I move the image around using the hand tool, but selecting the hand tool de-selects the pin for the adjustment brush.  After moving to a new place in the image, and selecting the adjustment brush, how can I turn on the pin again to touch up the mask?

Duh, head slap here, Jeff.  I should have known that!  I'm sure that was mentioned in your excellent "Digital Negative" book.  A Senior moment I guess.  I am enjoying your "Digital Print" book now.  Well done Jeff.
    Thanks for the reply,

I think it means "the sliders are all 0 so painting adjustments with this brush won't change anything."  In other words, move one of the sliders to a non-zero position, for example Exposure from 0 to 1.0, and then see what happens.  You can edit the brush and change it to do something other than Exposure +1.

  • Black speckles when using adjustment brushes

I'm having an ongoing issue with Lightroom 4.4 when using adjustment brushes in the development module with RAW files from a Canon 5d Mark III Raw on a retina MacBook Pro running OS 10.8.3  When using the adjustment brush to make exposure adjustments, the adjusted area gets covered with tiny black speckles. I see it when trying to darken down highlights or when trying to lighten shadow areas. The heavier the adjustment, the worse the speckles get. I have taken the same original images and opened them in Photoshop and made similar local adjustments with curves and the images look fine, so it's definitely an error with Lightroom inserting the artifacts. Any suggestions?

Turn off the AutoMask checkbox in the brush options.

We can't do darker, but try Shift-O to cycle through other colours.

  • Can I Move the Anchor Point for Adjustment Brush in ACR CS5

It's never been a problem before, but the anchor point for the Adjustment Brush in ACR is sitting exactly where I need to see what is happening.  I can delete and start again, but if there is way to move or hide the anchor point while stil being able to adjust the setting, it would be handy to know for next time it happens.

  • CS4 raw editing, global adjustments versus useing "Adjustment Brush"

I had made a post earlier about CS4's raw editor hanging when working on .cr2 files ( canon). It seems that the raw editor works fine when makeing global adjustments, but when using the adjustment brush to make selective adjustments the program hangs for extended times. A global brightness adjustment will go thru in a couple of seconds at most, where as a photo with a few selective adjustments made to it will hang for as long as 5 minutes or more. Moving the image around is fluid when dealing with a image that does not have selective adjustments, and hangs when dealing with an image that has selective adjustments. The program seems set up to make selective adjustments ( it does have a selective adjustment brush after all ) but useing that option seems to cause such massive problems that it is un usable. The raw editor seems to use 50 to 100% of the proccesor during the hang time, and there is no disk activity which leads me to believe that there is not a problem with not haveing enough ram.
I would appreciate any help that can be given with this problem

First off let me say thank you for your responce.  But if what I have been doing is
    selective tone adjustments, not HDR
That doesn't change the fact it would be a feature that can enhance the image process none the less.
But not all the images I process are single shot images... I actually take time to scout a spot. Then I take about 3-4 shots at different exposures. Go into Camera Raw and and make different versions(snapshots) of those images.  Then create a document for each of those (snapshots) Then I open in a HDR program... NOW Photoshop HDR... and process them. The effect is different than the normal way of converting images into HDR... I think even more precise, or at least in my opinion.  So creating a feature like this will give the user the ability to streamline the workflow.
So much of what you described doesn't belong in the HDR plugin, but is already available as tools in ACR or Photoshop itself.
But what about the HDR adjustment brush tool I suggested?  That really sounds like a good possibility that people would like to utilize when creating HDR images.

  • Unable to add further Edits using Adjustment Brush in Lightroom 5.

Using Lightroom 5 - when I go back to a previously edited image to do further editing, using the Adjustment Brush, I open the effect that I want to use ( Dodge, for example) but all the sliders are inoperative. The word 'Dodge (Edited)' appears in the Effects header. Therefore I can't make any further changes to the image. I have opened the drop down Effects menu and ticked 'Restore default presets' but to no avail. Any solutions welcome.

Thank you for that trshaner. The density was set at 100 but flow only 86. I've shoved that up to 100 now and I think we may have a result!
    Thanks again.

  • Highlight loss when using adjustment brush & graduated filter.

    Hi
    I'm using Lightroom 2.2 on a Mac.
Is anyone else having the same problem? :
When using the graduated filter or adjustment brush on an image it seems to cause some of the top end highlights to burnout, which is rather frustrating as it is usually when I am trying to rein them in a little.
It seems to happen automatically even when not working directly on those areas and I cannot pull them back with the localised adjustment tools themselves.
Any thoughts would be most welcome.
    Thanks
    Graham

    Hi Eric
    Thanks for your reply
I've had another look at it... whenever I have a negative exposure setting on the brush or gradient and apply it anywhere in the image it seems to affect the top end highlights throughout the image even if they haven't been clicked on.
It's just a small change but it is frustrating to lose highlight detail when you've worked hard to capture it in camera!
Look forward to hearing from you.

  • Cursor is Off When Using Adjustment Brush

Is anyone else having or solved this problem?
In Lighroom 3.5 (all updates installed), when I attempt to use the Adjustment Brush tool, my mouse cursor appears to be off. After choosing the tool, if I click a location on my picture, it acts as if I actually clicked down and to the right roughly and inch. Also, when I move the cursor from the photo back to the tool pane, it "jumps" about the same amount as soon as I cross between the two panes. It's very annoying and renders the brush unusable.
Installed on a recent MBA with Lion.
    Any help is greatly appreciated...

    Dorin,
I do not think it is a videocard problem. Everything else works fine, no problem. I have used Lightroom under Vista and now I use Windows 7 ultimate. I also used Windows ultimate before the crash. When I use e.g. Google maps and I enlarge the map everything is OK. The problem occurs also when I use the laptop's touchpad.
I do not know what videocard or driver version....
    I hope this helps anyway.....

  • Adjustment brush in ACR slow

I'm finding the adjustment brush to be slow to take affect. There is a delay between making the brush stroke and seeing the adjustment occur. It starts out with a short delay, but increases with each stroke to the point where it takes 6-10 seconds after the brush stroke for the adjustment to show.
The delay occurs if Camera Raw is hosted by Bridge or by Photoshop. The delay is longer when Camera Raw is in full screen mode, but it is still quite slow when not in full screen mode. Photoshop Memory Usage was set at 65% then dropped to 50% with no change in the delay. Virus protection software was disabled.
My system is a Dell Dimension 8300 Pentium 4, 2.80GHz with 2GB of RAM running Windows XP with Service Pack 3. The video card is a NVIDA GeForce FX 5200 with 128 MB memory. Old gear for sure, but I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to improve the performance of the adjustment brush short of buying a new computer. Would upgrading the video card improve performance?

    Hello
As far as I can see, both the video and audio editing world are already using non destructive editing and the files can be huge for video, so Photoshop will evolve in that direction also.
The operations in ACR are just mask overlays, which are not really that complex, even though the xmp are large, but in the most complex one I have been using, it is only 157kb.It is a vector layer, whose mathematical description is held in the xmp.
A comparable 8 bit mask as a channel in Photoshop would be 12mb in a 36mb uncompressed image.
It is also the reason why CS4 has so many types of adjustment layers and filter layers. That is exactly what a mask in ACR is acting as,in other words a local adjustment layer.
Many years ago there was a very good application called Picture Publisher, that recorded all pixel and layer operations as an editable text file, on a low res copy of the main image. The final compilation was rendered using the same text file on the full size image. The main problem with that the application was not accurate enough. It had a rounding error, so in certain circumstances 1000 pixels turned into 999 pixels. This as you could imagine would make some truly amazing final images, but not quite what was intended.
I am sure that ACR will evolve and have quite extensive masking operations. There is a requirement to be able run a slide show in Bridge, with all images corrected this way and without having to use Photoshop proper, one image at a time.
Adobe might also finally conclude that Lightroom will be redundant
    I can wait!

  • Missing adjustment brush in ACR

I have PS CS6 with the latest updates, using a Mac Pro computer with OS 10.7 also with the latest updates. When in ACR, the adjustment brush does not appear on the screen unless I click the bracket keys which increase or decrease the size of the brush. If I paint a segment and the let go of the brush key, the brush disappears again. The adjustment effects work properly once I have brought up the brush by pressing the bracket key. I have to keep re pressing the bracket key if I am painting adjustments on multiple parts of the photo. I have restarted Photoshop and the computer numerous times, thrown away and reset the preferences for both Photoshop, Camera Raw, and Bridge, as well as repairing disk permissions on my Mac. Any suggestions?

If it was a PC I'd suggest seeking an updated display driver, because a missing or partial cursor is a pretty well-known sign of a display driver glitch.  As it is a Mac you pretty much have to wait for a display driver to come in with an OS update.  You might want to let Apple know that it's doing what you're seeing with your particular hardware.

  • After editing and adjusting color and exposure of a RAW image, the color goes weird on some images after clicking "Done"

This is happening randomly to some photos within a batch of imported photos. I can restore to the original RAW format, but then it will again go weird and dull after trying the edit again.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 10 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Corrupt (weird?) images after using Safe for web?

Since upgrading to CS4 i noticed that a number of images saved with 'save for web' do not display in a browser? It happens for jpegs as well as gifs, and when i upload them to a server they won't display - not even if i use the direct link to the image. Instead, i see the file-name displayed in firefox. I also noticed that saving the same image with the same save-for-web-setting 2 times gives me a massivee discrepancy in filesize - like 60k for the one, and 1.8mb for the other?
Yesterday i uploaded a 'save-for-web'-image to Twitter, and Twitter told me that "...the image can't be used. Is it animated?" - the weirdest thing about this was that it was a jpeg - ever heard of animated jpegs?!
Anybody else noticed something like this? I've been working with both Photoshop as well as webdesign for more than 10 years, so i can assure you i know what i'm doing. I just don't know what to do about this issue?
    Thanks for your help!
