Weird booting problems since 10.7.4 update

I have a 2006 MBP 2,2 which is now taking over 10 minutes to boot since updating to 10.7.4.
When it boots the Apple logo does come up almost straight away, it then stays for 5-6 minutes, before disappearing to the 'linen' for another 5 minutes, then the login screen comes up. From there it enters the desktop normally and afterwards the computer is as responsive as it ever was under Lion (ie not very!).
I have repaired permissions and I have verified the disk (which reports no errors).
I cannot reboot from DVD as the superdrive is toast. However, I cannot reboot in Target Disk mode either. Holding down T when the computer boots up leads to nothing happening, no Apple Logo, just a grey screen. Going into Startup Disk and telling it to reboot in target disk mode caused me no end of stress! When it rebooted nothing happened again. Eventually, after hard restarting it several times, I left it. No less than 25 minutes later, 25 minutes!, the Apple logo appeared and it booted normally (ie its 10+ minute boot into the OS).
Holding down shift, C, D, Command-V, Command-S leads to nothing happening at restart (or maybe it is just that I get bored of holding them down after about 5 minutes), however resetting the PRAM/NVRAM with Command-Option-P-R worked in a few seconds as I would expect.
Any ideas ?? (At nearly 6 years old it will not be going to be repaired by Apple.)
Cheers.

Wifi problems since 10.5.8 Update. Even after Snow Leopard Upgrade.
Is there any way to use a 10.5.7 wireless .kext files on Snow Leopard? And where can I find the files?

Ok, I have the fix!! After several frustrating days it finally just works.
    The process:
Upgrade your Macs to 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Powercycle your modem AND time capsule / airport TWICE
Reset your time capsule with a pin or paperclip on the back
Follow the prompts to setup your time capsule / airport access
    -- On your Macs
    Go to System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced > TCP/IP
Click "Renew DHCP Lease" then click "Ok"
    Click Apply
    Turn off Airport
    Turn Airport on
    IT WORKS!!!
One of the magical people at tech support walked me through it earlier today. The whole process took about 1.5 hrs because Show Leopard takes about an hour to install on one machine.
    Hope this helps-

  • KT6V Weird boot problems

    Hi..
I'm having this weird boot problem (and no it doesn't seem to be the standard one)
    OK..
    I have the following :
    AMD Athlon 2000+
    KT6V LSR mainboard
    2x 256 Crucial PC2700 memory
    IDE Hard Disk (120gb segate)
    Creative 5700ultra Graphics card (AGP)
    Cd Rom
    Chieftec 400w PSU
    WinXP Pro
If I set my CPU FSB to 100mhz (everything else on auto).. win Xp pro boots fine and all is pretty good except that my chip is now seen as a lowly 1.25ghz..
If I then set my CPU FSB to 133 or 166 then the machine boots (ie it beeps etc..).. starts to load windows xp (I get the logo and that's when the problem happens)  and either black screens (ie.. nothing and the monitor turns off) or blue screens with the windows message saying that windows has detected a hardware fault and has halted the system..
I know my memory, chip, heatsink etc all work because just over an hour ago they all worked fine in my KT3 ultra.
What is going on as I've tried almost everything to try and solve this, with the only option to set the FSb to 100mhz which is incorrect for my CPU.
    How do I fix this.
I've looked through the forum but this is not the same problem as simple reboots.. this is weird.
If I can't fix this then I guess it'll be send it back.. which is a shame because I like MSi motherboards.
    Thanks
    Slippery

    Hi..
I've checked the CPU heatsink.. and nothings wrong !
(Can't check the voltage but I know the PSU is Ok as I did run it in a custom case with 4 Cd writters, 4 HDs, loads of lights etc.. before I moved to this new plain case tonight)
What's weird is that set at 100FSb it's fine but at 133 or 166 it just crashes after the loading XP logo is displayed. Up until that point it's all fine.
But why does it run Ok at 100mhz and not 133mhz ?
Please help..  before I end up fixing this with a hammer !
    Thanks

  • Mid 2006 iMac Boot Problem (Since latest firmware update)

I have a Mid 2006 17" iMac. Ever since the latest firmware update in early December, about every other startup I've been having boot problems. After the white screen with the Apple Logo and the spinning wheel it goes to a blue screen like normal, but instead of the 'Loading Mac OS X' white window popping up it stays blue and the spinning loading wheel starts. I've left it loading for quite a while before and nothing changes. I have to do a force shut off by holding the power button. and then I start it up and it will boot normally.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Actually, I think it'san early 2006.

  • Startup problem since 5/07 security update

I've been having serious problems with startup since the last security update. Startup hangs at the first gray screen or the while screen with the Apple logo. Sometimes multiple restarts get me to the login screen. Safe mode gets me there as well, but the next time I log in the same problem occurs. I have cleaned caches, deleted extensions, deleted fonts, used several shareware programs to clean up my startup files.
Yesterday, when I booted up, a small camera appeared mid-screen with a face alternating with a question mark. The camera blinks back and forth for a long time. Once startup made it to the login screen, but I didn't want to login, since I didn't know what it was. Today I tried to login again. The camera is still there--no surprise--but this time startup is stalled at the gray screen and the fans starts up and runs with no progress.
Any ideas? My iMac has worked perfectly until I did the last security update. I am pretty careful about downloads or opening any unknown files, so I'd be surprised if I have a virus. Others in my family use the iMac, but they're pretty saavy about viruses.
I'm about to reinstall OSX, but want to see if anyone has run into this and found a way around.

  • Battery problems since 10.4.3 update?

I know that there a quite a few threads about battery problems, but has anybody experienced significant decreases in battery life after installing the 10.4.3 update? I installed it a few days ago and I'm noticing now that my battery life is much worse than it used to be.
For example, I was just watching a movie on my iBook. Before I started, my battery was FULLY charged, and Energy Saver was set for "Better Battery Life". I had airport turned off and left the screen brightness at default.
My battery died within 40 MINUTES! I had the sound turned up a little bit but I don't think that would drain enough power to reduce my batter life to 40 minutes when set for "better battery life"....
My battery's less than 2 years old.
Anyone else had similar problems since last OS update?

I just found a useful util called CoconutBattery 1.3 available from :
    http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/index.html
Running the app - gives me this info on my battery's state:
    current & max capacity: 828mAh
    Orginial Capacity: 4400mAh
    Battery load cycles: 461
The battery according to this app shows that at max charge it only has 18% of its orginial capacity.

  • Problems since 10.4.4 update...

I've got a problem since i've updated Tiger to 10.4.4. Usually I leave the computer with the screen sleeping. When I try to awake it, the computer only shows the screen into a black shadow.
The first time I've seen that I restarted the computer and all has runned OK, but the last time (this monrning) it didn't respond to the restarts and I did have to reset the PRAM.
Is anybody having the same problems?
iMac G4 700   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Airport, DBT-120, Wireless Mouse, 1 gb RAM, 160 gbs HDD, Superdrive.

I've repaired permissions and the hard disk with the Tiger install DVD. If this happens again I will try reinstalling Tiger. The trouble seems to be done from software, not a hardware failure.
    Thanks people.

  • Mac Pro Boot Problems After 10.6.2 Update

After installing the latest version of snow leopard I am now having boot problems on my mac pro.
    Symptoms;
-Screen resolution is incorrect at apple splash screen.
-Takes a lot longer than usual to boot.
-Once booted the blue tooth magic mouse isn't imediately reckonised, takes a while to find that.
-Once the mouse is finally reckonised it can move around but can't click on anything or bring up the dock. Tried a wired mouse, had the same problem.
-The keyboard is also not appearing to do anything, none of the shortcuts or quick keys work..
Had exactly the same problem after 3 restarts but on the 4th after leaving it for a good 20-30minutes it setled down and everything was working okay. However this is a recurring problem as I had the same thing yesterday...
I have a my 10.5.8 system backed up on an external so I am running from that at the moment. Don't want to go back to snowy til these problems are solved.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Try Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)

  • Weird Firewire Issue since 10.5.6 update

    Hey guys!
I'm a musician so I use an audio interface (Presonus FP10) to record my stuff. It's a firewire interface and it used to work perfectly fine.
However, since the 10.5.6 update there seems to be something wrong with my firewire port and I haven't found anything on the web that fits my problem.
If I plug in my interface into the firewire port, it doesn't work. It neither goes on nor is recognized by the OS.
Although, once I plug in my ethernet cable for internet access, it works fine.
Problem with this is that in my music room there is no possibiliy of pluging an ethernet cable.
I hope somebody can tell me what to do in order to get this fixed, whether this problem is caused by Leopard or by my interface.
    Thanks,
    Mark

That was my first guess, too. See, that's what makes it all so weird:
I have the device plugged in with no other cable. Nothing happens. I have the ethernet cable plugged in without anything connected to that. Nothing happens. I then plug it into an internet router ét voilá! It works...Could it maybe be a lack of electricity coming from a damaged AC-Unit connected to the device?
But then again, it all worked fine up to the 10.5.6 update. Did the apple people do something to the firewire driver?I hear the new Macbooks come without Firewire...

  • Internet application problems since 10.5.6 update (probably DNS related)

After applying the 10.5.6 update (Combo) I have found that a number of internet apps, e.g. Safari, Apple Mail (with HTML messages), NetNewsWire or Twitterrific work much slower than before.
Safari needs a long time to load web pages, images in HTML mails or NNW posts load 10 to 15 seconds after the text and so on.
These problems seem to be DNS related somehow, since manually adding the OpenDNS IP addresses to my networking settings resulted in at least partial improvements.
I am by far not the only one experiencing this, judging by this thread at a popular German Mac weblog: http://www.fscklog.com/2008/12/ladehemmungen-mit-mac-os-x-1056.html (in German, unfortunately).
I hope that someone comes up with a proper solution -- or that Apple is going to fix it as soon as possible...
BTW: I have neither a WebKit nightly or a Safari 4 developer release on my machine.

    RandallDC wrote:
I also have this problem. At first I was blaming my ISP but a quick boot to Windows XP via Bootcamp showed otherwise. Everything was fine and fast with XP but not so with OSX. I tried to recall when I started having this problem and sure enough it was after I updated to 10.5.6. Only my internet access via HSDPA USB modem (Huawei E220) is affected. Everything - webpages, email, downloads - starts to loads after a 10-30sec delay. Data from Airport and Ethernet is fine though. DNS cache flushing and using public DNS doesn't help either. I think going back to 10.5.5 is my only choice.
I'm a PC/Windows user for 2 decades and a Mac user for just a month now. I guess trying to escape the constant OS debugging and reinstalling won't be happening for me any time soon.
The biggest thing you can do is change your debugging mindset to realize that Windows "working" in no way exonerates your ISP.
Too many ISPs, hardware manfacturers and software vendors adopt an "If it works with Windows, ship it!" mentality rather than programming to the appropriate Internet standards.
The best thing to try to resolve this issue is using OpenDNS' DNS servers; if that resolves the problem it is your ISP's DNS servers that are at fault.

  • Big Problems since 10.6.5 update!

Updated the other night on my imac 24" since then it has been freezing. I restarted my mac and I can move my mouse but not one application I click on
opens..I mean nothing. I have tried rebooting with the start up disc still the same problem. I hope someone can help me I searched and searched this website and didn't see anything close to my problem.
Thank you in advance for your time and help.
    Karen

Open Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities), highlight your internal drive, and click on "repair permissions". You should do this after every software update. You may see some cryptic messages; as long as it says "permissions repair complete" at the end, no need to worry about them (everyone has been getting some after a Java update).
Also, if it should ever become necessary, you can also verify your disk. If that results in a "needs repair" message, you can't do that while booted up from the internal. You can do it while booted up from your install disk.

  • Macbook Pro weird boot problems

    Hello!
I have a macbook Pro (late 2012) with OS X Yosemite (latest update) and I have some weird stuff going on in it...
2 days ago, I was using normally it, as I use it for work, when it suddenly freezes (never happened before). when i turn it on again, a empty symbol shows instead of the grey apple until i turn it off.
then, when i opened the recovery mode to see if my HD was damaged or something, it just do not shows my HDD at all to verify for integrity. I trun it off and let it be.
After several hours later, i decided to try to boot it again, and, for my surprise, it boots normally and all my files are normal. But after 10-15 minutes backing up all my important files to cloud services, it begins to be really slow. The spinning disk is shown even when i tried to close a finder window, move simple pages files or even to open the top menu to shut it down. The weird part is going even crazier: when i put a freezing gel (a gel packet that freezes and thaw without water is involved) under the macbook, the slowness is off and it works almost at normal speed. when the freezing effect is off, the slowleness is back
All this parts repeats very often.. sometimes the empty symbol appears when booting, sometimes it boots normally and after several minutes it becomes really slow. I tried to diagnose if a hardware problem was involved (pressing "D" after pushing the power button), but no problems were found at all.
what is going on? do you guys even had this? I hope it´s not the logic board!
    (Sorry for my bad english)

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Problems since 10.4.11 update

    Hi,
I have installed the latest software update..OSX10.4.11
    Since then big problems:
Everytime I try to remove / eject a usb key /memory card, (I'm a photographer so need to do this daily) etc the finder chrashes.
I can not install any new applications as suddenly I do not have access privileges..although I am only user and have not changed any of these details.
Some other applications tending to stall also..photomechanic etc.
I have reinstalled update but still the same.
When I installed th update I did not archive /install.
Anyone else having problems with this software update?
    Any solutions?
    Thanks.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

  • File Transfer Over Network Problem since 10.4.9 Update

Since the update I've had this problem. Here's a typical operation:
In a finder window, from my PowerMac G5, I click on Network and mount a disk from another Mac on the Network (Intel Mac Mini). I navigate to that mounted disk and drag a 1.5GB file from it to a directory on my G5.
This used to take a couple of minutes before the update. Now it takes over 4 hours! My network looks like this:
Intel mac Mini (10.4.9) hard-wired to new Airport Extreme 802.11n
    PowerMac G5 (10.4.9) hard-wired to new Airport Extreme 802.11n
Pwerbook (10.4.8) Wi-Fied to new Airport Extreme 802.11n
I don't understand why this is happening or how to correct this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated since I do this operation frequently and 4+ hours is totally unacceptable.
    Thanks!
    G5 2.5gHz PowerMac, Mac Mini Core Duo, G3 400mHz Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I found out that about the same time as the update one of my five external hard drives started going south on me. When it got to the point of no return where it wouldn't mount any more I took it off the Mac. The network is running fast and fine now. For some reason the drive was slowing everything up. Weird.

  • Graphic problems since 10.7.2 update on new mac mini. Is there a fix?

Updated to 10.7.2 on 2011 Mac Mini. 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5. 8GB Ram. Old 23" cinema display using hdmi adapter, usb relay not plugged in for use of usb ports on display.
Ever since update, response of apps is really slow and i get a lot of graphical errors (screen junk) at certain times. There really seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. It does seem worse in safari though. It also happens to the items in the doc and puts weird boxes behing the icons, etc. I attached a screenshot of a representation of what is happening graphically.
Not sure if anyone else has had this problem or if there is a fix that anyone has found.
    Thanks in advance.

Went through a complete archive and reinstall and did everything that applecare has told me to do with out any luck.
Mac Mini is currently at the authorized repair shop, but it's frustrating because their diagnostic tests are showing that the graphics card is fine. I brought in my 23" cinema display for them to connect it to it to see if that may be the problem when it's connected.
Any one else have an original 23" apple cinema display hooked up to their 2011 mac mini and experiencing any problems? It worked flawlessly with this display up until the 10.7.2 update.
