Weird bug?  Transparent background is black instead of checkerboard in RGB mode

If I try to make a new RGB document with the Background Contents set to Transparent the canvas is filled with black instead of the checkboard pattern.  However over in the Layers window the little icon for the layer shows it as transparent with the checkerboard. In the Channels window it also appears transparent, and if I click on one of the channels which selects just one of them the canvas changes from black to the checkboard.  If I click on the RGB channel at the top the canvas changes to black again.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it?
If I open a new document in CMYK I get the checkerboard like I'm supposed to.
I bought a new PC a few days ago and this is a fresh install of Adobe CS4 on Windows 7.  Photoshop is updated to version 11.0.2.
I could swear this wasn't happening a couple of days ago when I first installed it, and it never happened on my old XP computer.
edit to add: all files show a black background in RGB mode instead of the checkerboard pattern, not just when creating a new document.

What are the Photoshop > Preferences > Transparency & Gamut > Transparency Settings?
Boilerplate-text:
Does turning off OpenGL in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?
Other than that are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, font validation, etc.)?

  • Photoshop cs6 background content black instead of transparent

    I'm not sure what I did, but when I start a new project in PS the dialog box says that the background contents are set to transparent and the pixel aspect ratio is set to square pizels, but the document still shows a black background on screen. The layers panel shows it having a transparent background, with the white and grey boxes, but not the actual document background... Any ideas?

    Hi,
    What operating system are you using?
    If you go to Photoshop (Edit)>Preferences>Preformance, uncheck Use Graphics Processor and restart photoshop, does that make a difference?

  • Png files with transparent background show black only in firefox for android

    I have a wix created site and png files with transparent backgrounds are showing with a black blackground in Firefox for Android. They show transparent in all other browsers I have tried.
    I have tried saving the file as a gif, as a smaller png, interlaced, not interlaced, png 8, png24. It still shows black in Firefox for Android.

    Hi evelswoman,
    Thank you for your question. This sounds like a good one for the web compatibility team. Currently there are some compatibility documentation for background-image here: [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/background-image] and more details on background: [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/background]
    Filling a bug with webcompat.com with an example url can go a long way as well, I hope this helps.

  • My iPad 2 screen has turned a weird colour. The background is black and the letters are white instead of the other way round and colour photos look like negatives. How do I change it back.

    My IPad screen has turned a weird colour, the background is white and the letters white instead of the other way round.  Colour photos look like negatives. How can I turn it back to a white background.

    Dear Steve,
    You are wonderful! You are the best! I'm Stephania and I recently purchased a refurbished ipad2. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and updating & fixing it so my liking. The only thing that I couldn't correct were the photos that looked like negatives. Every photo, even on the internet, on apps, everywhere! I just couldn't figure out how to fix it. I contacted Apple Care and its too difficult to get in touch with them. I had looked through support before but didn't put in the right question. Well, today I got lucky. I did the two things you suggested and turning the "White On Black" off did the trick. I'm so happy! I had a feeling it was something simple and this is not even in the manual!

    Harm is correct. It would be better to edit in the program where you keyed out the green. However, if you really must ...
    DPX is one file per frame. While you may not be able to open it from Windows, it is only because Windwos has not been told to open them in Photoshop.
    The whole point of the DPX file is to have a visually lossless storage of your frames that is designed to be used between applications (just what you want to do): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Picture_Exchange
    However, if you prefer to use another option that you are more comfortable with, you can use PNG.
    Or...
    If you insist on a single video, use the Animation codec for Quicktime.
    In any case, you need a picture format or video CODEC that can store an Alpha Channel.
    Or.....
    Export the video with the black and use a Luma key in the next application.
    Or ...
    Export the video with the black, and then export a video of just the alpha channel as a blabk and white image where black is transparent when used as a track matte, and then in the next application use the video of the alpha channel as a track matte.
    Since you haven't said what the other application is or why you want to use it, we are having a little trouble offering a specific solution.

  • Black background when scaling images with transparent background

    I am implementing Zooming functionality for reports which have some icons. I am trying to scale icon by scaling its image. But the problem I am facing is that the icons have transparent background and the scaling puts a black background in place of transparent. Is there any way to maintain its transparency or better yet, Is there anyway to put a white backgound instead of the black one that is created by default ? Here is my code
         public static Icon getScaledIcon(Icon icon){
             if(icon instanceof ImageIcon){
                  Image outImage = ((ImageIcon)icon).getImage();
                      return new ImageIcon(getScaledImage(outImage));
             }else{
                  Image outImage = new BufferedImage(icon.getIconWidth(),
                            icon.getIconHeight(),
                            BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_ARGB);
                    JComponent comp = new JComponent(){};
                    icon.paintIcon(comp, outImage.getGraphics(), 0, 0);
                    return new ImageIcon(getScaledImage(outImage));
        public static Image getScaledImage(Image image){
             image = image.getScaledInstance((int)(image.getWidth(null) * getScale()),
                           (int)(image.getHeight(null) * getScale()), Image.SCALE_SMOOTH);
            return image;
        }I haven't done much image manipulation , so I would really appreciate any help or advice.

    I have also not done much of image work. But I guess you could achieve your functionality of showing scaled image in the screen by not scaling the image and show it, instead scale the image in paint method by calling g.drawImage giving the height and width. But use high resolution images so that scaling is good.
    If you do in this manner, you could give any colour you want as background to fill the transparent area or leave it as such.

    techece.

  • Transparent background instead of color for stage

    Is there a way to set the background color for the stage to transparent instead of a color? I only see color as options when clicking in property manager for the background.

    By default there is no background color with wmode="transparent" set. You may just be a victim of browser cache. Clear your cache as flash has a nasty habit of staying in there a while. What that does is tell the browser that you should be able to see through the flash piece in the browser.
    Mind you, flash doesn't always play nicely in all browsers. Sometimes you expect content to render 'over' flash (drop-down menu or such) and the browser still shows the flash item 'over' the menu. This is normal.
    If you're exporting a projector, you cannot export a projector with a transparent background. You will need an extension to flash projectors such as MDM Zinc or Screentime mProjector (Zinc is preferred). They can export transparent projectors (as well as a ton more).
    Any time you load a SWF inside another, the background will ALWAYS be transparent as well. The document background property has absolutely no effect on this. If you want a background you explicitly have to put a background layer in your SWF to have one.

  • Giving a black and white line work image a transparent background

    I am working in Photoshop CS4 (mac).  Currently, the image is comprised of black line on a white background.  How do I go about giving the image a transparent background?

    A day later, I have still not figured out how to accomplish what it is I am trying to do.
    I have not yet tried what you have suggested in the last post and am about to go at it once again.  I should mention two things.  1. My  goal is to drop this image into InDesign (cs4) when completed. 2. The image has interior space betwen the line work/image itself that I would like to contain transparency.  Not sure if I am being clear here. The issue lies in when I actually drop the image into InDesign.  While the image appears to already have a transparent background, once it is dropped into InDesign, the image then assumes an opaque/white background.

  • Photos with transparent background weird issue in album

    There is something very strange happening
    What I did
    I saved two images that had transparent background
    When I view it in my photo album the thumbnail shows the image but for the "background" it is some other random photo that isn't even in my camera roll! It just shows up only when I save these images with transparent background.  This happened for two images and the photos showing up are different (from the same night because I can see who is in it).
    When I view these images larger, the background photos do not appear , so it is very strange
    I took a screen shot of this too and would like to send to apple support

    I would not really expect AppleTv to handle transparency in an image, though maybe it does and this is some kind of bug.
    I would regard transparency handling as a non-basic feature to be honest, one that the majority of users will not expect to use or use.
    Does iPhoto handle transparency properly?
    Send feedback to:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
    It may be something they can add fairly easily, but it may not either.
    Don't expect a reply from that link.

  • Copying images with transparency produces a black background.

    When images are copied from Firefox and pasted elsewhere (Paint, PSP, Photoship, etc.) any transparency becomes opaque black. This makes it difficult to edit the image if the transparency was near black pixels. Is there any way to change the colour to something else, or at least, white?

    No, you will have to save the image to disk and open the file in your image editor. You can try if it works if you drag the file in the editor.

  • Transparent background layer become black when publishing on iWeb

    Dears,
    I used Photoshop CS to create a pic without background. As usual I made my selection, copied it, paste it on a new file. Then a deleted the background layer (tried with or without merging/flattting the pic) and saved it in .jpg but also in .pgn
    When dropping the picture in iWeb 2.0.2, everything looks great. The picture does not have a background.
    But when published on .mac, the background becomes black.
    I tried almost everything when formatting the pic, although the backgr remains black.
    Just before I made the same with a wind turbine pic and it worked perfectly.
    See on: http://web.mac.com/daniel.daplincourt/daniel.daplincourt/Vide.html
    Can anyone help me plsss?
    Thank you!
    Daniel

    I have the same problem with the black backroung on my photo. I saved it over has a png but it still has the black background when I publish it to .mac. I would match it to the background color of iweb but I have a textured background. Is there a step that I am missing when I save it out to a PNG. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • Transparent Background Not Working

    Hey guys, I have an image that I am trying to save just the foreground of and make the background transparent. I think Im doing everything correctly in photoshop, but when I embed the image into another photoshop file its on a white background instead of having no background like I want. Links are images of what it looks like while saving and what its embedding as in the next file.
    Saving this as png: Gyazo - 9ef2fed6e86b8b081cdbf418160fce4f.png
    When embedding in another photoshop project: Gyazo - 18fe30a53c01fa7dc8428a308d9c0269.png
    Thank you for any help!
    EDIT: It looks like the issue is in "Layer 3" in the first picture. It overlays white and black which is only partly opaque. Is there a different way to get this kind of adjustment (darken the middle and whiten the edges) in a way that doesn't interfere with the transparent background?

    Good day!
    Please post the images on this Forum directly.
    And please post a screenshot with the Layers Panel (with Thumbnails) visible.

  • Titel with transparent background - how to do? PE-10

    Hi,
    When I make a title it shows clearly transparent over my video-picture - as desired - in the preview window.
    When I share this video the title has  black background and so the background video-picture is not visible.
    What am I possibly doing wrongly?
    Regards,
    Koen

    Koen,
    When you chose Title>New Title, you WERE working in the Titler. Unless some of the Panels in Titler have been closed (do not think that PrE allows for much of this, but in PrPro, the Titler has separate Panels, that CAN be closed, if chosen), you should see a little Toolbar, and then the Styles Panel.
    Here is a look at Titler from PrE 4.0. It should look very similar in later versions of PrE. Note that the Video at the point of the CTI (Current Time Indicator) shows through below the Title, that I am working on here (Title>New Title>Default Still, which has not been modified yet). If the CTI was on a section of the Timeline, with no Video, the "field" behind the Title would be blank, hence seen as black.
    In the case of your Title, I see the same issue on the ends of the Text string, plus it appears that some Effect is being applied near the bottom of the characters.
    If I understand what you want for the end result, a Title that comes in (I would use a Cross-Dissolve Transition at the beginning), and then stays on screen, as the Video fades out, then fades out itself, I would remove all Effects and Animations, like the Fade In, or Fade Out, and anything else applied to that Title. With the Title on a Video Track above the Video (on Video Track 1), that fades out via the Opacity Keyframe. Then, add a Cross-Dissolve Transition to the Head of the Title, and one at the Tail also. Note: since the Video will have already faded to black by the Tail of the Title, you could also use a Dip-to-Black, instead of the Cross-Dissolve, but the visual effect should be the same, since everything below that Title has already faded to black via the Opacity Keyframing.
    The Duration of those Cross-Dissolves will be per the default, Edit>Preferences>General>Default Still Duration, but remember, you can adjust that Duration to suit by click-dragging on the Transition. Just be careful that you click-drag ON the Transition and not on the Title (or Clip) - can be a bit tough, if one has a high-rez monitor, so click-drag carefully. If you have clicked on the Title, or the Clip, just Ctrl+Z to Undo and try again.
    I personally find the Title Animation Presets to be a bit limiting, so seldom use those. They are quick, but limiting.
    Also, make sure that you have not added any Effects to your Title, unless you intend to use those. Most Effects that can be applied to a Video Clip, can also be applied to a Title. It almost looks like there is an Effect applied, that is truncating your Text in your example, but maybe I am seeing some form of an Animation Preset, that is just not complete in the still image, that you are showing.
    Good luck, and let us know if the above makes sense, and also gets you exactly what you want and need.

  • Transparent Background for a Label/Display item

    I'm using Forms 10g.
    I'd like to make the background of my labels (display items) transparent. i.e. it should be the same colour as the canvas (eg teal) instead of the ugly white default background.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Abigail
    Edited by: Abigail Parmar on Mar 11, 2009 9:47 AM

    Wait a minute! Abigail is not really asking for "transparent" background. All you need is for the background to have the SAME background color as the canvas.
    All of our forms have that feature. Display-only fields have same background color as the canvas, update items have a white background, and the item where the cursor is located gets set yellow.
    We do it with property classes and visual attributes. The canvas is assigned a Visual Attribute = "WINDOWBACKGROUND", and display-only fields are assigned a Visual Attribute of "DISPLAYITEM". Both visual attributes are assigned the same background color, with the foreground (text) color black and navy respectively.
    We have mouse-click processes that allow the user to change the screen background color from the default to something they might like better. That process just changes the background color of the two visual attributes, and both the canvas and all the items' background colors change together.
