Weird Characters on Web Pages

I am suddenly seing weird "symbol" or "dingbat" characters on web pages instead of letters, and this is happening on all browsers I try (firefox, safari, explorer). How do I fix this?

Most likely it's a bad font or font cache. Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic are the most common. See this note:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=932561&tstart=0
If that doesn't help, email a screen shot (tom at bluesky dot org).

  • Garbage characters in web pages

Produced a page in iWeb then uploaded it to my webspace using Secure FTP. Now I have garbage characters in it with  wherever there's a return and a bunch of garbage for every apostrophe.
Obviously I have some sort of problem with the character set but how to get rid of it?
I've tried copying text over from a TXT file without the returns, adding them later in iWeb, but it made no difference.

    When I open iWeb
and open this project, I have no idea which set iWeb
will end up using. I have to check the file
attributes afterward to figure out which one was the
    set "du jour".
You are aware that iWeb does not open published files, right? It only opens the Domain.sites file where its data is kept:
    http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/iwebdata.html
Also iWeb cannot register any changes you make in a published site with an editor, so that needs to be redone every time the site is republished.
Normally if you have multiple projects it would be a good idea to keep their data in separate Domain files.
PageSpinner file open function cannot see any folder
or file created by iWeb except the one called "Sites"
    and that one is empty.
I have no problem using PageSpinner to open the files created by iWeb. Since iWeb does not create anything called "Sites," I'm wondering if the Open function was going instead to Home/Sites or some other location rather than Home/Documents/HTML or wherever you published your pages.
As far as my ISP goes, I'll take your word for it,
but I can't imagine an ISP of this size getting this
wrong and not receiving/responding to complaints.
None of the major companies devoted to hosting web pages which most people use have this problem as far as I know. ISP's for whom hosting is a sideline sometimes do not pay attention to the issue and leave their server set to force all browsers to use ISO-8859-1 encoding. They will not likely get any complaints if their clients are all using Roman script and traditional web editors which default to that setting as well.

I've noticed that different web pages display non-alpha characters. The above example was on Amanzon; other pages on discovery channel pages.

Make sure that you have selected the correct encoding (possibly Unicode (UTF-8)) for those pages.

  • MS Word Special characters in web pages

I am running into an issue when I paste text from MS Word documents into web pages (JSP) forms.
Characters like dashes paste. Then the form is submitted and when later retrieved and prepopulated from the DB, they come out garbled.
The database accepts UTF-8 encoding, and I changed the charset on the JSP's to use UTF-8 encoding, but none of this helped.
Could anyone suggest where else can I look for the problem?
    Thanks.

    Thanks,
I am reading your article and attempting to implement the changes...
I am trying to understand something - my system is Vista, whose default encoding is Cp1252. Must I change it to UTF-8 as well, or is it sufficient to force UTF-8 in my application?

  • Weird redirection of web page without my permission.

I have been recently looking at external hard drives and visited Ebuyer.com about four days ago to look at their offer for a Western Digital drive. Today, while looking at a web page giving the specifications of the Iomega 1TB Ultramax drive, which was accessed from the Applestore UK site, my screen suddenly changed to the one of Ebuyer.com that I had visited four days ago.
I had my hand on the mouse and was just wandering round the Iomega page and I'm certain I didn't click the mouse.
Have I picked up some gremlin from ebuyer.com? Is someone trying to control my computer remotely? If anyone can throw some light on this I would be obliged.
    Ken W.

I don't think it can be anything to do with an itchy trigger finger. The sequence on Monday 5 October was the Kelkoo shopping comparison site followed by a link to the Ebuyer.com site where I browsed four or five pages about the Western Digital hard drive.
Today, the sequence was an Applestore UK page about a LaCie 1TB drive ( I mistakenly said it was an Iomega drive in my first post) followed by this unexpected jump to the Ebuyer page. I've since revisited the Applestore page about the LaCie drive, but everything behaved normally. I just don't understand how my browser can jump to a page that I visited four days previously. As I said, my hand was on the mouse, but I didn't click it, and I was not on a "previous browser history" page or anything like that.

  • Weird characters displayed on page instead of file download/preview

    Hi everyone,
I have a download file procedure as per the instructions on the download.oracle.com page
The download of the files worked just fine (or better say they were previewed in a new page) but recently a new schema has been added to the workspace so we can start the testings from the scratch.
I modified the schema name where needed, but not the download page acts kinda weird, as instead of the file preview, I get a long page full of:
    JFIF,,&ExifMM*bj(1r2i-'-'Adobe Photoshop CS3 Windows2008:07:28 16:41:20]&(.%HHJFIFHHAdobe_CM
The issue is that if I switch back to the old schema, the result is the same. So, anyone has any idea of what can cause this?
    Thank you
    Regards
    Andrea

PS: Some updates...I tried it in IE as well (I use FF when working with applications) and funny enough the photos and documents get displayed/the download box shows up.
But, all the files have the name f. f.pdf, f.jpeg etc
I tried calling the dl_image procedure in the url (currently I call a new page where I pass the file id to an application id and then I call the above procedure in a pl/sql block):
    http://www.host/pls/dad/schema.dl_file?p_fileid=1
And the name seems ok. I don't think it's a good idea to put the procedure name in the link, is it?

  • [SOLVED] Weird characters in man pages

    Hi,
I remember I had read a similar thread, but I can't find it anymore.
My problem is that man pages show strange characters and it's quite difficult to read at times. Here is an example:
The traditional protocol for writing to someone is that the string <80><98>-o', either at the end of a line or on a line by itself, means that it's the other person's turn to talk.   The  string
<80><98>oo' means that the person believes the conversation to be over.
    How do I fix this?
    Thanks.

    Hello
Here is a post on that problem if you can read french : http://forums.archlinuxfr.org/viewtopic.php?id=1084
    The members suggested to replace
    export LESSCHARSET="utf8"
    by
    export LESSCHARSET="UTF-8"
    in /etc/profile.
One suggest to replace the line inside /etc/man.conf (from the gentoo wiki fr)
    NROFF iconv -f utf8 -t iso8859-1 | /usr/bin/nroff -Tlatin1 -c -mandoc
I must admit that it doesn't work for me neither, and the above does not solve the problem. The file I tested is UTF-8 encoded and the LESSCHARSET defined to use UTF-8 gives badly accentuated characters (But at least printable characters). I think you will have to tweak a little these lines, but it's a start.
Note that these lines suit (or don't suit) french man pages, but you may have to change the given charsets (especially latin1).
Hope it will help you search
    Cilyan
Edit: Ah, time to write the answer, the problem is solved !
Edit2: The tip given by dyscoria does not work for me.

  • Weirdness on my web page: 2 issues

    I am using NetBeans v 6, with Tomcat 6.
    1) My controls do not seem to preserve the values i give them. I have a dropdown combobox and a calendar control. Both get properly populated/initialized, when i first go to the page. I set them to autocommit on change, but no matter what I selected, from either the dropdown or the calendar, the new value is ignored and the old value remains when the page is refreshed.
    2) I even added a button, to refresh the page's contents, on turning autocommit off on the others, and no matter what I do, NONE of the event handlers I created are used. When I start Tomcat in debug mode, and I try to debug the application, with breakpoints in each of my event handlers, I NEVER reach my breakpoints, telling me that my even handlers are never called.
I have also seen problems with the session bean, where it complains one of the classes is not serializable. Is there any chance that the session bean isn't created and that this is causing problems with the page bean?
    How do I fix this?
    Thanks
    Ted
PS: I can provide the relevant JSP/JAVA source, but I see nothing in it to explain this. if you want to see it, specify precisely what you want to see.

    I worked it out.

Using Windows XP and Firefox 3.6.15 web pages print with some of the script as unintelligible weird looking script or maybe some kind of computer script. This problem also occurs with the web page on which this question is submitted. This doe not occur using IE 8.0 with the same printer.

My advice is to uninstall that extension. IMO, you have too many extensions installed, and are asking for problems with Firefox.
