Weird contrast adjustment problem...

I've been attempting to emulate the in-camera settings I use on my Olympus E510 in order to preserve highlights, but are those that are only used by the Olympus Viewer software. In doing so I have found what might be a bug, although I'm not sure what with.
I've left Raw Fine Tuning to the Apple default settings, and using the 'Highlight/Shadow' view. If I see clipping in both shadows and highlights, I've been trying out a method of turning down the contrast a little (using the Enhance brick). One click on the arrow sets it to -0.05, which is just enough usually.
However, I have found that it often recovers more of the shadow than the highlights. If I then try to bring up the Blackpoint adjuster, the shadows darken, but the blue indicator does not operate at all, it seems like the scale in the histogram has hit a kind of wall, and doesn't actually move down to the clipped zone.
At the other end of the scale, the highlights display as expected, and the red clipping indicator shows up as you make adjustments.
Anyone else seeing this?
Thanks
Andy.

I just figured something out. If I disable the three finger drag for the trackpad the problem goes away.  That's a weird bug.  Any workaround?

  • The contrast adjustment in Aperture version 3.2.3 causes picture to go black

I can reliably turn off and on the contrast adjustment in see the error occur.  When I try to re-generate thumbnails for the picture, it re-generates either as black of random color stripes.  I have reinstalled Aperture and rebuilt library and the error persists.

I have reinstalled Aperture and rebuilt library and the error persists.
It still looks like their might be a problem with your library. Do you see the same corruption for all your raw images or only for some selected few images?
Do you see the same error, if you create a new Aperture library and import some raw images into the new library?
If a new library works well, I'd suggest either to repair your current libary manually by removing some files from the library package (see the link below) or to try to import the current library into a new, empty library.

  • Is the iPhone screen contrast adjustable?

Is the iPhone screen contrast adjustable? I'm not talking about brightness. My screen shows shadowy horizontal (in portrait mode) stripes. I can still read the screen, but it is generally washed out, with the prominent stripes. Playing with the brightness doesn't help much.

I opted to send mine (well my wifes) in, in the past.
    Call 1-800-MY-IPHONE
    Tell them the problem.
They will ship you a box (prepaid to send back) with all the materials needed to ship back.
You will be told to take the SIM card out (they will even send paperclip to help). Then pack up (they even send tape) and send back.
You can put your SIM into any other phone that uses SIM cards and use it while yours is getting fixed/replaced.
Once they get it, it is like a 1 day turn around. Ship, repair/replace, ship back took me just 3 days. Your experience may vary.
Be sure to really explain the issue. I would even include a note in the box back explaining it in case the service notes the tech writes are not clear enough.

  • Strong Contrast Adjustment

This image is given as an example in The Creative Digital Darkroom, Eismann:  http://www.creativedigitaldarkroom.com/CCD_Downloads/Chapters_Files/Ch_6/ch6_BelowSeaLevel .jpg
The contrast of the sign was adjusted by steep curve applied to a selection of the sign on a Curves Adjustment Layer in Photoshop.
I tried using the Lightroom Adjustment Brush to approximate the Photoshop adjustment by painting Contrast set at 100.  This had very little effect, and I thought that I really do need Photoshop for such difficult adjustments.   However, I decided to pull out the stops, and I was able to get an excellent contrast adjustment using the following Adjustment Brush settings and painting on the sign:  Exposure:  2.14; Brightness:  -200; Contrast: 100; Clarity:  100; Sharpness:  38.
This clearly pushed Lightroom to the limit, but it performed well, and it avoided another trip to Photoshop.

    Thanks for the tip Eric!

  • Contrast adjustment creates color cast - why and how to fix?

I used a local curves adjustment (with a layer mask) set to "Strong contrast" to make the space shuttle "pop" in a particular shot. I looked it so much I copied that adjustment layer to the rest of the launch sequence. I then realized that as I went earlier in the sequence (20 seconds in real time at most) each successive photo developed a blue color cast from the contrast adjustment. I tried a luminosity blend hoping that would take the color out but no change.
Ideas as to why? And best way to correct?
PS: It's a tiff file that was sent from lightroom with the proper white balance.
    Thanks!
    Roscoe

Could you post lores or sections of the image where the adjustment worked and one where it resulted in the cast?
If switching the Adjustment Layer’s Blend Mode to Luminosity does not work (which seems a bit peculiar) the you could possibly work against that with a Hue/Adjustments Layer (in a Group with the Layer Mask applied to that instead of the Curves Layer or clipping masked to the Curves Layer after turning off »Blend Clipped Layers as Group« for it).

  • Weird color consistency problem: What happened?

    Here's a weird one:
On Friday I worked on several RAW files in Lightroom 2.5.
I adjusted all colorations, white balance clarity sharpness etc.
Looked great. Saved the metadata to the files. Opened them in Bridge then Photoshop.
Looked perfect. All coloration looked exactly the same across all three apps as they usually do.
Saturday, I go to open some of the files.
The PSDs looked very washed out, overexposed and unsaturated.
My whole display looked badly calibrated. (Apple Cinema Display)(Too bright and low contrast)
So I started in on trying to fix it.
I recalibrated the monitor in the displays preferences dialog box.
Got the monitor looking correct. The gamma settings were acting strange. Not sticking to their default settings...
I restarted a couple of times.
But when I looked at the files there was a great discrepancy between what I was seeing in Lightroom and what I was seeing in Bridge and Photoshop.
The images looked perfect in Lightroom but washed out and desaturated in Bridge and Photoshop.
It looked like a really bad misunderstanding of color space information.
I have my color profile in Bridge (which is supposed to control all the CS4 color spaces) set to North America PrePress 2.
I could not see a way to set Lightroom's color profile in it's preferences.
All of the RAW files were exported to PSDs as Adobe RGB 1998 or sRGB.
    Fast forward to today.
I just opened all three apps and looked at the files.
    Today everything is matching again.
    Weird!
(And no I was not drinking heavily yesterday)
    What happened?
BTW, I am on a non Intel Mac, running OSX 10.5.8.
I had downloaded the Lightroom 3 Beta only to discover that it doesnt work on Non-Intel machines.
I deleted the beta from my hard drive although I dont think that was causing the condition.
I was not running LR 3.0 yesterday.
Anyone have any ideas why my color syncing went so far off between the 3 apps?
Makes me concerned that when my client gets the PSDs from me the files make look like crap on her system.

Anyone have any ideas why my color syncing went so far off between the 3 apps?
Undoubtedly a monitor profile problem. I sometimes have weird issues where my mac just seems to ignore the display profile after waking up from sleep (known bug in Apple's OS X BTW). Recalibrating and restarting the apps always fixes the issue.

  • Weird Video Squeezing Problem

    Hello.
I'm having a weird video problem and I thought I'd see if anyone else has experienced it.
I'm running the MSI nforce board with an AthlonXP 1700+ with two Micron 256MB PC2100.  Firmware 2.6.  Windows XP Home Edition with SP1.  I have a four-year old ViewSonic GT775 that I've always had good luck with.
I've been using the latest nForce 2.93 drivers since they came out and am running the 41.03 Detonator drivers.  I've tried downgrading to the 40.72 with no change.
I run my desktop at 1024x768x32bit and what has started happening the past couple of days is that the image on my desktop will randomly squeeze in about a half-inch on each side.  It will stay like this for a while and then randomly go back.  It wouldn't be a big deal if it just stayed like this, but it randomly clicks back and forth.  Changing the color depth or refresh rate does not affect it.  Even shutting down and then restarting doesn't affect it.  If it was squeezed when I shut down, it'll be squeezed when I restart.
Very weird.  For now, every time it does it, I just use the monitor controls to resize the display, but it is annoying to have to do it.  It seems like right before its going to switch, I'll see minor tearing.
Has anyone else experienced this?  Could it be my monitor?  I do have another computer at work and I could bring the monitor home.  My experience in the past with monitors is that when they start to go, the colors change and the brightness dims and then they just stop working.  My monitor today is as crisp and bright as the first day I bought it, so I think it's the onboard video.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

Your image resize problem sounds like a refresh rate problem to me. It looks as if your monitor cannot catch the correct refresh or follow the hi speed refresh you ask. It can come from either the board, the monitor or just a bad connection. I would tend to say the monitor, as it is getting a bit old.
Failures in monitor can come from diffrent parts. If it is the electron canon, you can see a lowering of the luminosity/contrast. Same for the high voltage grid. A problem on your deflection parts could lead to a color shift or distorted image. Here, i'd say it is a problem with your synchronisation signal. Try a degauss also. You may just have a shifty ground.

  • Brightness auto adjusting problem with Toshiba 39l22U.

I own a Toshiba 39 inch LED 60hz 1080p hdtv (Model 39l22u), and I've had nothing but problems for months. I bought it back in January of this year for 400$ at BB and I initially had no problem with it, I thought that once I figured out the best picture I'd be satisfied, so I never bothered to return it. My problem isn't the picture detail, it's actually really nice on Bluray movies. My problem is something else. The brightness sort of adjusts when you move your camera angle around in video games. Unfortunately not many own this tv and the ones that have it and reviewed it said it's fantastic and has no problems, not a single mention of this.
The overall brightness of the TV adjusts to what you're looking at in game. For example, looking down at a road on Grand Theft Auto V the road gets brighter and the sky gets darker, then when I look up the road gets a bit darker while the sky gets brighter. While driving in a car at fast speeds can be an eyesore because the camera is moving and the brightness is adjusting a lot. It's like the TV is auto adjusting the brightness for some reason.
I also had another problem, but I was able to solve it. Dark areas would dim when the camera's in motion then go back to normal when you stop moving the camera angle in games. This was solved by turning the brightness up and it disappeared. So naturally I thought that maybe by turning up or down on things like the backlight, contrast, gamma etc that maybe this would go away, but it's still there.
This TV doesn't have many extra settings when it comes to Picture. Aside from the basics you have Dynamic Contrast and Dynamic Lighting, nether of which cause this problem as it still happens when I turn both of these off. There's no energy saving feature aside from powering down when not in use for a period of time. I'm stumped here, ether my TV is faulty or there's some sort of auto brightness adjust built into the TV that you can't change. I've also tried every different setting in my Xbox 360's display settings, but it's still the same problem.
Unfortunately I can't find out much about this TV, only a few reviews in which people say the TV is great. Which makes me think my TV is faulty.
Is my TV faulty? Or Is there something that could be causing this? Any ideas on what the problem could be?

I'm unfamiliar with that problem. If you can't solve your issue and no one in the community can help, contact support to speak with a tech support agent at (800) 631-3811.

  • Some playlists don't show up - weird iPod syncing problems

Apologies if this question has been answered elsewhere - couldn't find the answer when I was searching the boards last night. Don't know if this is an iTunes problem or an issue with the touch...
Last night, I plugged my iPod touch (1G) into my MacPro to add some new music. This is when things got weird!
First, I noticed that my iPod's name had mysteriously changed since the last time I synced it. It used to be called "Christine's iPod" and now it has reverted to the default "iPod touch."
Next, when I went to add some different playlists to the iPod, I noticed that one of the playlists I wanted to add didn't show up in the Music tab, so I couldn't "tick" it for inclusion on the iPod. This isn't a new playlist, and I have successfully synced it with this iPod in the past. I tried renaming the playlist and making a new playlist with the same songs, and neither of these playlists showed up either. BTW, I definitely don't have too many playlists - I probably have 100-150 playlists total.
Anyway, I restored my iPod and starting from scratch - and the playlist still didn't appear to be available to sync. I ended up adding the playlist by "manually managing" my music, but this isn't an ideal solution. I'd like to be able to sync the playlist!!
Don't know if it's relevant, but my bf also has an iPod touch that he syncs to the same iTunes account. We have separate computer logins, and our iTunes Library is on a shared disk on our MacPro (to prevent needlessly wasting HD space due to song replication) and occasionally we both get messages saying we don't own or don't have permission to access the Library when opening iTunes. To solve this, we alter the permissions on the disk and apply to enclosed items. Maybe this happens after updating iTunes or adding new songs? Not certain what triggers it.
Thanks in advance - this is really bugging me!

This isn't foolproof but there are usually two things that contribute to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod, both due to information either in or missing from the Get Info>Info tab against the song in iTunes. 1) the song has no album name associated with it or 2) the song is marked as part of a compilation.
If tracks are missing an Album name (as mentioned above) in the Info tab, this information needs to be filled in. The no album one is a bit quirky as the songs will appear under certain circumstances but the simplest remedy is just add None or Miscellaneous in place of a title. See this link for more detail: I don't see some of my songs when browsing by artist on my iPod
Also if the tracks are ticked in the Get Info>Info tab as part of a compilation, they will not appear under Artist on the iPod. Highlight a song in iTunes that you know is not appearing correctly on your iPod. Right click on it and choose Get Info and click the Info tab (alternatively choose Get Info from the File menu), if "Part of a Compilation" is marked untick it and afterwards update your iPod, you should find it now appears as normal. Compilations are stored in a separate folder in iTunes so the songs don't appear inside the normal Artist>Album folder which may be why this happens.

  • Weird event display problem in week view

Hi. I'm getting a weird display problem in week view. First time this has ever happened.
Some events appear to be missing, but when i double click on where I know the event is supposed to be, a new event is created (as excepted), and the missing events suddenly appear. When i move forward or back by a week, and then return to the week in question, the missing events are gone again. But, I can see the missing events in day view or month view.
    Any ideas?

    Dean,
Next, try reinstalling the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo).
    If that is unsuccessful:
    1. Use iCal>Export...>for each one of your individual calendars.
    2. Delete all but one of your calendars.
    3. Create a calendar and name it "Test."
    4. Delete the calendar which remained after step #2.
    5. Quit iCal.
    6. Remove the iCal plist, and drag the iCal plist file to your Desktop.
    7. Log out/in or restart.
    8. Restart iCal and use iCal>File>Import...for each one of the calendars that you exported in step #1.
    9. Delete the "Test" calendar, and any "Home/Work" calendar which was automatically created when you opened iCal in step #8.
    ;~)

  • Weird Internet Explorer problem!

Something really stranged has happened to my computer within the past couple of hours. I use IE 5 (yeah, I know...I am hopelessly out of date, but it has all my bookmarks and preferences and I like the way it functions much better than any other browser I've tried...). A little while ago I was doing some surfing and I guess something I did--some page I visited?--caused my Command key to be tied in to Subscriptions. I don't understand how this could be, but it's true. If I want to do something like copy + paste, or something else I might normally use the Command key for, I can't do it. Instead, my pushing the Command key causes a window to pop up asking if I wish to subscribe to the site in question. (Actually, at first, whenever I pushed Command, my subscriptions were updated, so I went in and deleted all my subscriptions, but that didn't take care of the underlying problem.)
I am not particularly computer literate. For instance, I can't even tell you what the bar across the top of my screen is called (the one that starts on the left with the Apple logo, followed by File, Edit, View, Go, etc.). But I can tell you that that bar, when I'm in IE, is fouled up. After "Go," there is a bunch of garbled stuff that reads, approximately (I can't type all the symbols), "p[symbols]>Favorites[symbol]AddPagetoFavoritesD[checkmark]OrganizeFavorites[bu nch of other symbols ending in a black apple]Update Su." Then the bar continues with Tools, Window, and Help. When I click on that bar and the dropdown menu appears, it is some weird, mangled, unusable version of my bookmarks. However, if I use the Favorites tab on the left side of the window, my bookmarks are there and usable.
I've poked all around in Help and Preferences and, not surprisingly, cannot find any way to undo this. (I'd be amazed if I actually found something telling me what to do if my Command key brings up my subscription window!) It's really unfortunate because, as I said, I like IE and this is making it pretty hard for me to use it, since I can't do anything involving the Command key.
Have any of you ever encountered this? It is about the weirdest thing my computer has ever done!
imac   Mac OS 9.2.x   IE 5

Hmmmm. Are you getting problems with disappearing
words in the menu in IE alone? How about other
programs or when you open your HD - any strangeness
with the titles in the windows?
It seems only to be in IE. By the way, I also have a Mozilla browser on my computer, which I installed because so many sites were simply not working with IE anymore. Mozilla is working fine. If I liked Mozilla as well as IE, I'd just use that, but it has numerous differences (mostly about commands and things like not being able to click and hold on an image or page to open it in a new window) and 9 times out of 10 I prefer the IE way of doing things (though that could mostly be habit).
IIRC, Microsoft is set to remove Internet Explorer
for Mac from it's website VERY soon..
Yeah, I think in April. It's too bad--IE for Mac has become the unwanted stepchild browser.Yahoo doesn't work with it (at least, not the version I have), and I frequently get alerts when I go to sites that tell me my experience won't be optimal since I'm using IE. But I really like it! I use Safari at work (I have OS X there) and, like Mozilla, it has various differences that bug me, plus it just looks strange--somehow less "live" than IE--as if I am looking at a PDF of a web page rather than the actual page.
In a pinch, there's also iCab which is a wonderful
browser that is still being developed for OS 9.

Thanks for the tip. But with an unusual browser like that, don't you get the same warnings all over the net about how this or that site doesn't support your browser?

  • Weird bzr upgrade problem

Whenever I run pacman -Syu or pacman -Syyu, even after running pacman -Scc, it always upgrades bzr to version "bzr-1.3-1.1", it does it every time, has been doing it for about a week and I have no clue why, I tried changing the mirror, but it makes no difference, it just keeps upgrading bzr, even if I've already upgraded it many times.
It's not too annoying, but I would like to know if there's something in my config that is making it behave weird (I have testing enabled, so it might be that, although it says it installs the package from extra?)

It's a problem with the repo. Hopefully, it'll be fixed soon.

  • VERY weird OVM networking problem

First, this may have nothing to do with OVM, but the problem I'm seeing is happening on all FIVE of my VM servers. I can't even guess what's going on. Maybe you have seen this and solved it, or maybe you can suggest what I can do to debug this.
    Here are the details:
I have a 3-node cluster, built from brand new IBM x3650 M4 servers. I have a 2-node cluster, built from old retired IBM xSeries servers that used to be VMWare ESX servers. My office is on another subnet from the data center network that contains all 5 servers. I see the following symptoms occasionally and randomly (I see it at least once a day, and can make it happen multiple times a day if I keep trying):
    1. When I SSH to one of these boxes, sometimes the session will freeze. At other times, the session will work perfectly, but after exiting the SSH session, any subsequent attempt to ping or connect via TCP from my desktop to that server will absolutely fail. That is, ping, traceroute, and ssh (and presumably, everything) failes.
    2. If I don't try to communicate with that server for several minutes (maybe 5 to 10 minutes, I'm not sure), and then try to ping or SSH to the box, it works again!
    3. However, if after, say, exiting SSH, and finding that I can't ping the server, if I keep pinging (from Windows, I say "ping -t -w 5000 vmserver") the pings will fail FOREVER. I have left it pinging for 24 hours, and it would never answer a ping. But then if I stop the pinging, wait ten minutes, and ping again, it works. I swear.
    4. During the time that I am unable to ping one of VM servers from my desktop, if I try to ping that same server from another desktop machine in my office, connected to the SAME little 4-port switch, it works perfectly.
    5. This is ever more weird: During the time that my desktop 1 cannot ping server1, say, I can go go desktop 2 (right beside desktop 1), open an SSH session to server1, and from there, I can ping desktop1. I swear.
Why would I think this is an Oracle VM problem, you ask? Well, I wouldn't, except that I have other servers in that data center, that run ESX, and AIX, and Windows, and I've tried like hell to make one of them exhibit one of these symptoms, and I cannot do it.
If you have any ideas about what the heck is going on, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Doesn't sound like a VM problem to me. Sounds like you either have a spanning tree loop or you've got a lot of packet collisions causing issues.
I don't know how much you know about networking but a spanning tree loop is when you have multiple paths connected to the same physical network without using load balancing or multipathing. You can have multiple connections between physical networks but it must be configured properly or you'll have one link come up and the other go into blocking mode. you'll never know which one it might be. That is.... if the links have the same cost. Thus you get a "loop". If the ports are "floping". You'll have times when its up and times when its down. Your network admin should be able to see if the spanning tree is constantly be rewritten. That is a sure sign you have a network loop.
You said you have a 4 port switch? If that switch is set on a port that's set to do "portfast" then the switching fabric will never learn what's behind that switch. You just can't plug a switch into a network and expect it to work. Again, I don't know what you know about networking so don't take it the wrong way.
Packet collisons happen when you have a link between equipment where one side negotiates to a different speed than another. Say one side is 100 half duplex while the other end is 1000G Full duplex. You get massive amounts of collision and it will only get worse the more traffic you try to pass. Again. You mentioned a 4 port switch. You should never assume that switches will ever negotiate at the same speed on each end of the connection. Cisco has historically recommended that inter switch links be hard code to avoid 'negotiation" issues. Its not a big a difference in 1 gb siwtchiing and 10 gb switch but if you have a 100 mb 4 port switch hooked into a 1gb link..... that might be your problem. Just some thoughts.
IF you really were having a VM issues. The cluster heartbeat would be causing the VM servers to constantly reboot. So I don't think its on you servers. Probabily between you and the servers.

  • Weird tty console problem if I leave X (e g I press ctrl+alt+F1)

    Hello,
I have a weird problem with my console.  When I leave Xorg, by pressing ctrl+alt+F1 for example to get to a console, the console is a horrible mess.  It is a working console, but it looks so terrible you cannot recognize a single character.  Little multi-colored squares are all around the screen and some are blinking representing the cursor.  The conosle however, still works as I can blindly type things like top and press enter and watch the squares dance as top runs.
Anyone heard of this problem before?
Thanks and sorry for posting so much in the forums,
    e^1

Yeah I believe it is a bug with the nvidia driver for that card.(Maybe others?)
I switched to the nv driver and the problem hasn't come back.

  • Exposure vs. Levels vs. Brightness/Contrast Adjustment Layers?

I have some photos that are a bit underexposed and I'm trying to brighten them up a bit and I made a Levels adjustment layer and also experimented with the Exposure adjustment layer. Are these essentially doing the same thing OR are there reasons to have a Levels adjustment layer along with an exposure one and a Brightness/Contrast one?
    Thanks in advance.

The Exposure adjustment in Photoshop is primarily meant to correct tonal values of High Dynamic Range images, which are 32 bits. This command makes tonal adjustments using a linear color space or gamma instead of your image’s color space.  You can use it on 8 bit or 16 bit images too, but the adjustments may seem rather drastic.
When rescuing poorly exposed 8 bit or 16 bit images, I prefer Levels or Curves because you have greater control.  Brightness/Contrast, isn't something I use much.
