Weird cookies in Safari 5.1 (OS 10.6.8)

Hello,
surprisingly, I regularly find that pages like e. g. Facebook, Google, but also many others, put cookies in my system, even though I usually mark the option "block ALL cookies". This happens every time I am using the browser - even when I don't visit these particular websites!!
I expect Safari to block ALL cookies when I choose this option, but obviously there is a (probably intended...) bug in the software.
How can this happen and how can I avoid this kind of spy behaviour of Safari, Google & co.?!
Thank you very much for your answer!

I'd use that terminal command - takes seconds (and a restart) + no download. But otherwise yes - the 10.6.8 v1.1 then the update & anything else software update picks up (not safari, obviously )
Some people happily get a copy of just the safari 5.0.5 application & use that, since apparently it works, although I'm not sure what cookie function you'll get (easy enough to see). You'd use Pacifist to extract it from the 5.0.5 installer package, or grab it from a backup.
Although you'd hope software update would catch the security change - I'm not sure if the combo would overwrite the new or not... on the one hand, it's newer, but on the other, it sure over-wrote safari 5.1 when i checked it... so better to be sure, I haven't checked since that update.
If you look at the files in /System/Library/Keychains/ afterwards - if EVRoots.plist, SystemRootCertificates.keychain, and SystemTrustSettings.plist are all dated 23 April 2011, the combo rolled them back - if they're later... it didn't.
Apple do know, since bug reports come back as 'duplicate of...' - but  there's no public info to my knowledge.
How much of a security issue is this? Should I worry about it, or just leave it until they update to fix?
more privacy than real security, I'd say - although there are add-ons to manage cookies.

    Go to ~/Library/Cookies.
Move the Cookies.plist to the Trash.

Is it possible to permanantly "lock out" a specific cookie in Safari? I understand using preferences to provide details and to remove specific cookies but I would like to prevent some cookies from ever being allowed. Is there an advanced blocking method I haven't found yet?

No, you are not the only one having issue with management of cookies in Safari.
Many have expressed a wish for blacklisting cookies.
Safari > Preferences > Privacy  > Block cookies > Always
Click the question mark at the bottom. This is the explanation  I got.
"Select to always block cookies. This may prevent you from using some websites."
I am not aware any command using terminal to accomplish the objective.
    Best.

I know this has been solved as you reported, but I think you need to check with your e-mail provider. Did you also get this same e-mail on your computer? If you use the same ID for e-mail on computer and ipad, it should have appeared on both. It's very common spam. Check your computer to see if on it, the e-mail is in spam, or, if you deleted it on your ipad, check your recently deleted e-mails.
You might want to consider changing your password, though people sending spam, don't need it. My e-mail provider had me change my password, not because I was getting spam, but unknown to me, I was sending it!  (You'll still get some spam, though.) It's when you learn that you're unknowingly sending spam...that you must change your password.
    Hope this helps.
(Ss I was sending this, I just got an e-mail notification from the Nigerian... it got to my e-mail instead of going to spam.)

  • How to delete recurring cookie in Safari?

I try do delete cookies in Safari 5.1.7 with settings to "Block from 3rd parties and avertizers". Most cookies can be deleted, but there is one named 194] that I delete and 2 seconds later it reappears in the cookies list. I tried to search the mac for 194] but nothing comes up.
Any suggestions how to get rid of 194] for good?

Here is a hosts editing method which should work with all versions of OS X. Read the notes below before you start.
Open Terminal - in Utilities folder
Paste the following and then hit <return>: sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
Enter password when asked and hit <return>
Use arrow keys to go to a new line at end of text - note 1
    Type: 127.0.0.1<tab>silly-site.com<return>
    Type: <control>O
    Type: <return>
    Type: <control>X
    Restart and test
    Notes:
IMPORTANT - do not delete any original lines at the top of the file
Items within angle brackets are single key presses
Use letter O at line 7
This works by directing eg silly-site.com to your Mac at 127.0.0.1
Get precise site URL from eg your cookies preferences
Add as many lines as you wish to disable access to sites
This should be faster than any other method
Take care - mistakes could disable all communications
Replacing original lines should correct any mistakes

What is the default in terms of third party cookies on safari running on IOS? IS it 'from visited' ?

Thank you for your kind answer.
Unfortunately, the core of the trouble comes from TextEdit as it takes an unusual End Of Line (end of paragraph) character.
I took AppleScript as an example, but this makes trouble in all software that can deal with text (not word processors) and use the end of line character to read a line.
I will go there in case I can find an answer.

    Dear all
I am new to cookie programming. Is there some way so that I can set cookies in Safari on Mac.
I need to set the user's login information in cookie for a particular site then i need to launch that particular website.
The code samples will better help. Pls help me as i am in urgent need.

Can you explain what this will do? Is this a type of
wildcard for all domains? The answer to my question is that you can't do it, and for good reason. There is a security restriction against creating/accessing cookies from unrelated domains (and ".com" won't cut it). So I just did a complete proxy solution and translated all requests and maintained the cookies for the browser.
I am not sure what setDomain("/") would do - I am pretty sure that is just invalid (but it is a valid path, however).
