Weird Crashes - Any thoughts?
So, the quick review of my past few weeks:
1. Purchase MacBook Pro (late 2007 non-glossy) 2.53 Ghz 24.11.2008
2. Two minutes out of the box, was dealing with annoying noise coming from HD, like a squeaking, turning gurgling noise every 30 seconds or so.
3. Went back to the store and said "I didn't want a machine that talks to me"
4. Store says o.k. and replaces my Toshiba HD for a Samsung HD (assuming Tosh. was 7200 and Samsung is 5400)
5. When I get home, annoying noise is gone! Awesome! Now I cannot open iTunes or Front Row without MAJOR lags in my system. And I mean M.A.J.O.R.
6. Read up on problem and figure that I need to format the new Samsung HD so it knows what the fakk is going on inside the computer. So, I run an "Archive and Install"
7. Beautiful! iTunes and Front Row are AWESOME ... BUT, and there is always a but ... now computer crashes. For no reason. At any time. Even with only Safari open. But weird crashes .... example: I was Skyping with my buddy this evening. Computer stopped. EVERYTHING but Skype. No mouse, no functions ... nothing. But Skype was working. Shut down. Restart. Cool ... 5 minutes later ... BOOOOM. Nothing. No response except power button.
Problem again is that, like most Mac owners, I bought the machine to make music / video / photography. It's challenging to have a computer that one doesn't know if is reliable or not. One doesn't want to get 30 minutes into a project and BOOM. Bye bye. And no, one shouldn't always have to be cautious about crashes and constantly be saving their projects. Yes, saving is good, but ALWAYS saving is tedious, time consuming and one shouldn't have to do it all the time after shelling out a few thousand for a machine that "just works".
Any help with N° 7? I am stuck now.
In the car industry they call it a lemon. I think I got the lemon. Twice (I found out they replaced my first one before replacing the HD)
This ***** ... unfortunately, it's also my first Mac purchase.
OK, lets go back to square one and take a look at the things that usually result in slowdowns on macs.
First lets make sure that the drive is correctly formatted and that you aren't suffering from directory corruption of some kins.
Boot up the computer from your Leopard OS DVD, go past the language menu, and then select "Disk Utility" from the "Utilities" menu in the menubar. Highlight your HD (it will probably give the brand of disk and its capacity) in the pane on the left. Now look at the information in the bottom of the window. It will provide various information about the drive ending with something that should read:
S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
If the SMART status isn't verified, or the partition scheme is anything other than "GUID Partition table" then we have a problem.
All OK? If so, then highlight the volume name in the left hand panel, immediately below and slightly offset to the right, from the HD. The usual default for this is "Macintosh HD", though you may have called it something else.
Down below you should now see information about the "Mount Point", etc.
The important information here is the "Format" , which should read "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" . If it reads anything else then you may have a problem with the drive format.
All still OK? With your HD selected in the left hand pane, make sure the "First Aid" tab is selected in the top right pane of the Disk Utility window. You should see buttons available allowing you to "verify" or "repair" permissions and to "verify" or "repair" the "Disk". Click on the "repair disk" button. This will check and repair and corruption of your HD directories. It will probably take several minutes to run (longer still if it finds problems). If it says that it has undertaken repairs make a note of what they are. If it says that it can't repair the disk, again make a note and post back here. If it says that it couldn't find any problems then we can move on to the next step.
Once the "disk repair" is completed, click on "repair permissions". THis takes some time under Leopard (might even run for twenty minutes or so though it is usually a little quicker than this).
If none of the above indicated any problems then we at least know that your directories etc are in good shape before we move onto the next phase.
Restart your computer normally (ie booted from the internal drive).
Use it normally but start up "Activity Monitor" from the "Utilities" folder. Open the "Activity Monitor" window from its "Windows" menu. Choose "active processes" from the drop down menu near the top of the window. Then click on the "CPU" tab in the lower part of the window.
Watch for any "processes" which are using large amounts of "CPU" (in the "cpu" column. Anything using more than about 50% is unusual. If something is using more than this, take a note of what it is and post back here. Some background programs, and even printer drivers and the like, can be "processor hogs" that consume large amounts of processor time, while doing very little. This can cause serious slowdowns.
Cheers
Rod

I'll be using my iMac (27" late 2009) and it will suddenly cut to black. Then after a second or two, a grey screen will appear and tell me an issue occured and to push any key to restart. Once the computer restarts, the issue report pops up and it says I have a memory leak. I don't know what that means, or how to fix it. Any thoughts on the cause of why it's doing this, or the impending doom it may be heralding? I've posted the issue report below incase anyone can glean anything from it. Thanks for your help.

Photshop CS6 keeps crashing. Any thoughts?
Seems to be happening randomly - most recently on save. My log file is on GIST (who can read this stuff? I mean, really?)
https://gist.github.com/anonymous/5041888
Any thoughts are much appreciated.
JeffSo you're saying it worked and now it doesn't?
People often get restored function by resetting all of Photoshop's preferences to defaults. To do that, press and hold Control - Shift - Alt immediately after cold-starting Photoshop. If you get the keys down quickly enough it should prompt you to confirm deletion of your current preferences. If it does not prompt the preferences are not reset.
As to why it should stop working... No one knows why on some systems preferences get corrupted. Did your system get shut down improperly at any point?
Have any Windows Updates been installed lately?
Have you installed anything else since the time it worked and now?

Weird partial boot happening...any thoughts?
When I start up my TiBook it opens through the initial gray screen but when it hits the blue screen with the load bar, it stops. Nothing loads. Also it won't boot from techtools or the system disk....Any thoughts.
Hi, Markmls, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Hold down the trackpad button while restarting the Powerbook. Continue to hold the button down until the CD is ejected. This is a hardware command that ejects all removable media before the OS begins to load, so it should pop your CD out before any imaginary connection between it and the hard drive (very strange!) can interfere.
If the Powerbook then proceeds to start up normally, insert your latest OS installer CD or DVD into the drive and restart the Powerbook, holding down the "c" key until the grey Apple logo appears to force it to use the CD as the startup disk. Open Disk Utility from the Installer menu, select your hard drive in DU's left pane, click the First Aid tab in DU's right pane, and click the Repair Disk button. Let the repair routine run its course, and if any problems are reported to have been fixed, run it again until you get a "clean" run, with no problems or repairs reported. Then quit Disk Utility and restart normally. Let us know how it goes.

I am getting an Error when I try to open Firefox that Says Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system. This has happened several times recently. I deinstalld and reinstalled but am still getting the error. Any thoughts?
This happens to me as well. However, I have a shortcut on my desktop as well as my quick start bar. When this has happened to me, I can usually log back in without restarting, by using the shortcut on the desktop rather than the usual quick start bar.
I know this sounds weird, but it has worked for me about 80% of the time. -
Quicktime no longer plays my mp4's smoothly since i updated my system, any thoughts ?
I have been enjoying my Gopro Hero and playing mp4's on my Macbook. I updated the book from 10.5.8 to 10.7.5. With the upgrade Quicktime got upgraded to 10.1. All other aspects of the upgrade work fine however mp4s that played smoothly before are now unwatchable as Quicktime will not play them smoothly.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
BTW This is my first time here, i posted this in the wrong section earlier. Sorry. Before I answer, let me provide a bit of history.
When iMovie was released, it was written in the "C" programming language. It stayed that way through v2.1.2. Then in v3.0 it was re-written in a language called "Cocoa". The result was a product that couldn't be used for more than a few minutes before it crashed or destroyed the video footage it was being used to process. It took several releases before iMovie resurfaced as something to be trusted.
Now Apple has done it again with Quicktime. This time the rewrite was from a collection of languags to "Objective C". And voila; we have "Mavericks" and Quicktime 10.1. And another period of time to avoid Quicktime "upgrades".
Personally I don't use OSX more than 10 hours a year and then for VERY specific tasks that I absolutely can't do in Mac OS 9.2.2. So I have no clever way to give you for reverting. My brute-force approach would be to erase an unused disk and install everything that you had on the original disk on the erased disk before you let auto-update loose on the ill-fated original one.
You might also ask in a forum that is specific to OSX. This forum is actually for the older stuff that was released before X showed up.

iMovie wii no longer share with iDVD. I just upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.2 and now I can't get iDVD to work properly. Any thoughts? This is what comes up.....
iDVD does work with Yosemite although, as Kappy pointed out unsupported for 2 years, so try this basic troubleshooting fix:
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents of IDVD'S cache folder: User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD.
3 - launch IDVD and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks or Yosemite go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
If iDVD crashes again post the first 50 lines of the crash report. Don't post a screenshot but copy and paste the actual text.
To get a movie from iMovie to iDVD it should be exported out of iMovie as 480p and added manually to iDVD. -
I received a replacement I4 and did the backup before going to the new phone to restore. Everything transferred except for photos. Cannot find photos in itunes. Any thoughts on where they may be

Opening PDF crashes any open programs
Whenever I try to open a PDF (in mail, safari, preview, or Adobe) all my open programs crash. I booted in safe mode and I had no problem opening a PDF.
So, I tried disabling all my login items; I deleted all the pref files, of the above listed programs, from the library; did the usual disk utility, mac janitor, multiple restarts: Nothing. Same problem.
I looked at the crash report and I notice this line:
"KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000"
The x00000 number changes everytime depending on which program I am looking up.
I recently updated Microsoft word and added Extensis Suitcase X1 and I am up to date on all my Tiger updates. Any thoughts? It looks like there is an extension conflict with adobe. If so, how can I access the extensions and figure out the conflict?
Thanks....
Powerbook G4 867Mhz 640 MB ram Mac OS X (10.4.6)First thing to try is creating another admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem persists. If not, then the conflict is within the original user account—usually a corrupted preference file, checkable with Preferential Treatment. If not, then it's system-wide and your best bet is an Archive & Install, preserving user and network information. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120 for details.

Just upgraded to iTunes 11 on Win 7 . Everything works except iTune crashes and shuts down every time I try to open the iTunes Store from within iTunes . Any thoughts ?
Hi AM_Kidd.
Thanks for your reply.
I have done a complete uninstall and re install of iTunes and all related apple programs from my laptop through control panel, add remove programs and also by going through program files and deleting all tracers of any left over folders remove programs may have missed.
My apologies for forgetting to add this in my original post.
Thanks again
