Weird Display Issue...

Hey, my MacBook Pro has been working perfectly except for an issue in the display. On occasion, I will be using it and then the screen will randomly go black as if it was going to sleep but if I move the mouse it doesn't come back. I have to press down on both the left and right spaces below the keyboard for it to come back on but sometimes if flickers back off so I have to do it a few times (which I know probably isn't good for the computer but at the same time if I'm working on something I'd really hate to stop...).
I don't know if this is due to a battery issue or what but I'm really concerned about it because I was unable to purchase a protection plan for my computer (due to lack of funds) and I don't want what little support I have already on this to run out. Does anyone know how I can resolve this? I would greatly appreciate it.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

> What do you mean exactly by mains? I almost always run my MBP with the charger in. Would that cause any problems?
Mains = main household power supply, via the Magsafe adapter. i.e. a 110-240ACvolts -> 10.8DCvolts constant supply. It's fine to use it with the MagSafe plugged in most of the time, you should however always use/cycle the battery at least once a week and re-calibrate it every now and then for best performance.

  • Weird Display issue MacBook Pro 2010 15"

    Hey
i recently turned my MacBook pro on and after about ten minutes my display started to flicker some coloured lines until settling on this flickering:
I restarted,  tried to see if any updates where avaiable neither of which helped,
I took a screen shot and emailed it to my partners Laptop and the lines wern't there,  so i dont think it is a software problem.
i then shut down my laptop for the night and turned it on the next day and it was fine,  about 40 minutes on it and it started flashing again but didnt go as bad as the previous day,  It hasnt done it since but im slightly concerned as you can imagine.
Tech Tool Deluxe reports no problems at all.
I do have apple care but im out the country at the moment so not much i can do about it if things get worse,  i will be taking it to get checked over when i return home in a month!
Has anyone had similar issues,  or got any ideas as to what caused this?
    Specs:
    MacBook Pro 2010 I5 2.53Ghz 15"
    8gb Crucial Memory Ram
    Stock 500Gb 7200RPM Drive
Western Digital Scorpio Blue 640gb 5000RPM in Optibay
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB graphics and built in card

I will have to when i get home in a month,
it hasn't done it for a while now so hopefully i can last out the month with out any serious problems,  my main concern is the graphics going completly and me not being able to use my laptop at all!

  • Weird display issues on 24" iMac (old Intel model)

Hi, I just bought a 24" Intel iMac (used) and it performs great...except I'm wondering if the display is on the verge of going dead because after extensive use the display will get really hot and then weird things will happen like a split moment of discoloration (saw it once on the "word of the day" screensaver), or I might get this weird sort of "fuzzy" black line at parts of the screen or sometimes when I minimize a window or click on an icon in the dock (I have the magnification function set) parts of it may "stick" to the screen. I also tried playing Nexuiz and the game would freeze and/or just have moments where it looks completely weird or excessive screen flicker. When it looked that way I took a screenshot just to see if it would capture it, but when I look at the screenshot everything looks right so I don't think it's the graphics card. Mind you I've never had a problem playing that game on my old eMac. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may fix this problem? Has anyone else experienced this?

I have been having the following trouble with my 2 y/o, 24" iMac: 1. the screen freezes/locks up (for a better description) wherein the entire screen goes blank. It takes a power off/on reboot to get it back. 2. Screen burn (or as Apple calls it, "persistence" wherein with a solid color background, you can still see pages that were previously opened as well as shadows of the icons in the dock. I've had two calls to Tech Support and have taken the iMac to the Genius Bar three times. Nothing was found the first time. The hard drive was replace the second time, and the LCD screen was replace the third time. The lock up has not occurred since the screen was replaced, but I still can see persistence. I can actually read the date on the calendar icon if I move the dock from the bottom position to the left or right of the screen. Part of the persistence has, in fact, gone away, that is, a big, dark area from the bottom to the top of the screen on the left half. I'm about to call Tech Support and suggest that they have done everything they can and carrying this computer back and forth to the Apple store is getting old. Here is an article on "persistence" that was sent by an Apple technician. Perhaps, it will help you.

  • Weird OSX display issues after going to webpage, only thing that fixes is  Perm repair

I have a bizarre issue that i'd love some input on. Late 2009 iMac, Mountain Lion (then Mavericks).
I use Firefox to utilize a real estate website (Fusion MLS) for several months now. A couple of days ago, after i would log into the website and use it for a little bit, the rest of my tabs, apps, windows, would all start appearing as black boxes, or have glitched out (generally black) screen display issues. To be clear, other tabs inside the browser would be black, or partially black, and also the right half of my taskbar icons would be black silhouettes of the icon. BUT, the Fusion MLS website would still work fine. Closing the page, etc, would not fix the problem, it would be stuck like that no matter what i closed or opened, computer would function fine except for the display, but i couldnt see hardly any of the apps so I'd have to shutdown, but a simple reboot didnt fix it. After an hour of troubleshooting, I started off in Mountain Lion when the problem appeared, and in the process of troubleshooting I decided to upgrade to Mavericks to see if that would fix the problem, it didnt. Ultimately I discovered the only thing that fixes the problem is to boot into Safe Mode and Repair Permissions, then i can come back in as normal and everything is normal again (a standard reboot doesnt fix it, when logging back into OSX it would still have black silhouettes and all the app windows would be black).
So after the above I decided to just start using a different browser to go to this Fusion MLS website (Safari). Which worked fine for a day, but now when i go to the website, i have no problems, but when i put the computer to sleep, and bring it back, the windows are blacked out and icons silhouetted. So back to safe mode, repair perms, and then it works again. When i do the repair perms, there are usually no verbose things that it says it repairs, sometimes it says something about the PrinterList being 0 instead of 80, but thats it.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated, I'm completely dumbfounded....

Now regular Repair Perms doesnt fix it, it has to be Diskwarriors Repair Perms. Also it happens anytime the computer is put to sleep for a length of time and brought back, regardless of whether the Fusion MLS website was gone to.

  • Display Issues in Premiere Pro CS4

I'm having some weird display glitches in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 in the timeline area. I attached a picture that shows what it looks like. This happens whenever I drag clips on the timeline and it makes it so it takes a lot longer to edit my videos.
I'm really hoping that Apple or Adobe fixes this issue. I really can't afford to upgrade my creative suite to CS 5.5! And I would prefer to stick with OS X Lion.
Well it looks like I can't upload an image. Any ideas?

Keep in mind that the following sustained transfer rates - as a rough rule of thumb - apply:
    SATA & eSATA: 80 - 100 MBps
    Firewire 800:       50 - 60 MBps
    Firewire 400:       30 - 35 MBps
USB2:                20 - 25 MBps (depending on other USB devices connected it could be even lower.)
I agree that your storage capacity with 1 TB is enough, but the interface is too slow. If you do not have an eSATA port on you Vaio, you can get a Xpress card to eSATA connector with two eSATA ports to cover that. Also keep in mind that the C drive may be a 4200 or 5400 RPM disk and not 7200.
Mininmum requirements state: a DEDICATED 7200 RPM disk and while your USB disk is 7200, it lacks in the sustained transfer rate when compared to SATA or eSATA. BTW I think Adobe should explicitly mention SATA or better.
Above I mentioned for USB depending on other USB devices attached. USB shares the bandwidth among all devices connected. If you have a USB stick connected, a USB receiver for wireless keyboard or mouse, a USB printer, they all have to share the bandwidth and further reduce the sustained transfer rates of the USB disk.
Hope this explains it a bit.

  • 10.5.3 Update display issue. None of the already discussed...

I've calibrated my display at a colour management facility some weeks ago, and took a screen picture of the brightness setting in system preferences... so that i could recall it in case i changed the brightness by accident.
well, after updating couple days ago, i was asked to restart my computer. i did restart, but the computer acted weirdly, taking a lot of time installing extra stuff and eventually auto-restarting extra 2 times before showing my desktop again.
once it did, i noticed right away my screen was a little darker and maybe with lesss contrast. I checked Display preferences (Adjuts display brightness left Uncheked) and with the brightness slider at the same point as usual, it was significantly darker. Actually, i need almost full brightness to get the same white that was 70% brightness before the update.
I see a lot of people with display issues after that update, what is going on?
    ps: i'm using 2008 LED 15" MBP

That extra stuff your computer was installing may have been things that Software Update downloaded automatically but didn't install at the time. Don't worry, restarting twice is normal. By chance did you notice a drop in brightness after the update when running on battery power? When you unplug a MacBook Pro, the screen automatically dims a bit to save energy.

  • Screen display issue with InDesign CS4 (Windows)

I just upgraded from CS2 to CS4. I can open and use InDesign with no problems, until I try to switch to another application. Then, when I try to go back to InDesign, all I can see is the portion of the bar at the top of the screen that shows the link to Bridge, the view options and a bit of the outline of a palette or two. I have a two monitor setup. Most of the palettes are on the auxillary monitor and they show up just fine. The main display is where I'm having the issue. I can toggle in and out of Photoshop with no display issues. I haven't tried working with anything else from the CS4 package besides InD and Photoshop. This was not an issue with any CS2 product (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, InDesign, Photoshop, Flash). Nor has it been an issue with any of the other software I am running (so far).
When the display vanishes, I can see the "data" from the program I was trying to toggle out of. For example, if I try to toggle between this page and InD right now, I can see most of this page except for the part of the page obscured by the outline of the control palette (that one reminiscent of pagemaker) and the little bits at the top. I can't see the project I'm working on. I can't see the File/Edit/etc. bar at the top of the page. A Control/Shift/Save will lock up the program completely. Then, I see the "save as" menu box (in addition to the browser screen around it) but the program is locked up. I can close everything on the computer and reboot and open InDesign to resume work--that is until I need to do something like edit a photo to drop into a layout. Then the issue occurs all over again.
Windows machine; XP Pro, service pack 3 build 2600; NVidea GeForce 9600 GT graphics card.

Bob, thanks for the info about the 6.0.2 patch. I'll try grabbing that today. This morning, on the first boot, I can't even see the program when I open it--just the snip of the command palette and part of the very top bar. Very irritating.
Peter, I have tried maximizing, closing, reopening, etc. everything else I can think of. Same issue. I finally just bit the bullet and went back to CS2, rebuilding the current project so I can get the work done by deadline. I'll look for new video drivers this afternoon after I get back on track timewise on this newsletter. Weird that this display issue should just affect the one Adobe program though, and not the others if it is a video driver problem. I didn't do a lot of work in Dreamweaver--just enough to see if it displayed the same weird behaviour. Nope. Nor does Photoshop. Nor does Bridge. Nor does Acrobat. nor does any other software on the machine.

  • 2008 macbook pro 15" (Santa Rosa) weird display color and vertical lines

I have the 2008 macbook pro 15" (Santa Rosa). After my upgrade to mac os x lion (10.8.2), I noticed that periodically the screen either turns to weird display color and have horizontal lines on screen. This happens mostly during start up and lasts for about a min or two. Does this happen because of a faulty graphics card? I have NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256 MB card on this macbook pro. Please advice

Nope - it sounds as if you've GPU issues and the discrete GPU is soldered onto the logic board. take your new machine into your local Apple Store for a replacement. Don't wait too long!

  • 30EA3- 2.*: Weird performance issues for editing objects

    Hi,
I noticed weird performance issues for editing objects: when right-clicking on them in the navigator tree and selecting Edit, you get the old progress dialog "Connected to database XXX". This stays on screen a lot longer than it ever did (last sequence I edited over 30 seconds!).
Cancelling displays a "Error retrieving schemas" dialog, but then opens the Edit dialog correctly. No further side effects noticed, so I think sqldev is adding useless overhead here.
If confirmed, can this be bugged and/or fixed by production?
    Thanks,
    K.

Yes, I mean in context of other hangs reported. This one is a nasty performance issue, but IMO the others are real show stoppers.
Atomic steps are easy; any* Edit (object) action inside the context menu of the navigator or the Edit button of the object viewer.
I took a lot of dumps (every second or so) and came to these findings:

  • GPU/display issue?

    Hi
I'm having a serious problem with a mid 2008 intel (alu) iMac (2.66GHz Core 2 Duo, running Mavericks). I think from my searching around that it may be a GPU issue, but could also be display.
The mac won't boot properly, getting no further than the grey screen with apple logo. If started up normally, this screen displays a checked pattern. It goes nowhere and the only way out is to do a hard shut down.
I can boot in safe mode though. In this mode, the mac generally seems to be functioning OK, but instead of checks I have a very fetching set of bands/stripes. They are sometimes pink and orange, but at the moment they are white and turquoise. Each band is made up of a series of eight stripes, each stripe a few pixels wide. There are 13 bands across the screen: the desktop can be seen underneath/through the bands and can also be seen normally between the bands (so I have normal bands and striped bands, each the same width, repeating across the screen). The cursor arrow attracts in own mini striped band - a square the same width as the main bands. (image upside down for some reason!).
As I say, my googling suggests that this is probably a GPU issue (the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro, not the apparently dodgy NVIDIA one that seems to have cursed some early 2008 imacs). What I don't get is why I can boot in safe mode but not at all otherwise - what gets disabled in safe mode that allows it to bypass what is otherwise an apparently total barrier to successful booting? When I try to boot normally and get stuck on the Apple logo, I can hear the mac working away, but is just doesn't seem able to go all the way. The really weird thing is that even when it is stuck at this stage, I can still remotely access the iMac from my MBP - I can open and copy files over the network. This suggests that it is in fact sort of booted, but just not displaying itself. I cannot screen share though. When booted in safe mode, I can screen share, and the stripes show up on the shared screen view on the MBP. Again, this suggests to me it is a GPU issue, not a display issue.
Unfortunately, this is my old iMac whcih i have just passed on to my mother in law, who is based 250 miles from me. I am visiting for a few days and so need to either get it sorted or conclude that it's toast (seems little point in forking out for a new GPU for a near six year old machine, even if I could swap it). I don't mind taking it apart (I swapped the hard drive last year) if that woudl help identify the source of the problem.
Any ideas much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Hi Tammy (and anyone else who can help)
That's good news. Things at my end have gone a little strange. I put back all the extensions one by one and was able to boot nromally, even once all of them were back. I did however get a message that the ATI 2600 extension wasn't installed properly, but as it was still booting and I couldn't see any way to reinstall it (other than just popping it back in the extensions folder) I moved on. The screen was getting a bit worse, but still just striped rather than banded.
Having read further threads on similar problems, I decided to take the whole thing apart (great ifixit step by step guide). Nothing seemed amiss - all connections seemed secure, no obvious burnouts. Removed a LOT of dust and put everything back together again.
The machine started straight up when I plugged the power cord back in (I didn't get a chance to press the power button) - the screen flashed briefly round the edges and then stayed black. No stripes, no bands, no image.
I could hear the hard drive spinning, so pressed some buttons on the keyboard and got a warning tone, suggesting some sort of boot. I forced shut down and restarted and then tried to log in with the screen still blank. The bad news is that the screen has stayed black since then. The good news is I now have full remote access and can even screen share. The screen now has no bands when I screen share - I can see and interact with the full screen as normal and have managed to retrieve files etc over the network.
I am still deciding whether to order a new (second hand) video card. Looking in system profiler to get info on this it now shows no info AT ALL under graphics/display and in the 'more info' tab from the apple menu 'about this mac' version of system info it now says "No display detected". I am now unsure whether I have somehow 'blown' the display (I still get a brief white margin round the screen on start up) or whether both graphics card and screen are both goosed, or whether I should take it apart again to make sure the display itself is properly connected. If the graphics card was fubar, would I be able to see anything at all via screen sharing? I don't have an external display I can test it with. I don't want to fork out for  GPU only to find it is the display.
    Any views on next steps?

  • Interlacing problem - display issue or something else?

    Hi, another interlacing question...
So I captured my footage (originally shot on film, telecined to digibeta) at 10 bit uncompressed to do my online (the offline edit was a 29.97 DVCam dub of that digibeta). Since I'm finishing on 29.97 digibeta, I didn't remove the pulldown as I captured offline or online, and am editing both at my finishing medium's frame rate. So yes, I have the duped fields in there, but it also keeps things simple and I've theoretically been seeing exactly what the finished version will look like the whole time.
Last time I did this workflow I used a G4 running a dual 867 processor with a gig of RAM, and I had some jitter and interlacing "comb" visible when I watched the 10-bit on the Mac, but when I output to digibeta and DVD, it looked fine. So it appeared to be that my computer simply didn't have the juice to display it properly, but that the media itself was fine, as were both ways of outputting.
Now I have a spankin' new Mac Pro with a quad 2.66G processor and 3Gigs of RAM, so I figured that "display issue" was behind me. But not only do I still see jitter and comb on my computer monitor, I also see it much worse on the test DVD I just made. So the problem isn't just the display. The look is very similar to when you capture a clip and remove the pulldown, but fail to start capture on an A frame (but since this is all 29.97, I know that isn't the problem).
I thought it might be that the drives were not fast enough, so I reformatted two of my internal drives into a Raid 0 and put the media there and reconnected it. The raid seems happy, and it's less than half full, but the video doesn't look any better.
Any idea what else could be causing this? I did just upgrade the project from the FCP 4.5 version I started to the FCP 6 on the new machine, plus my experience has been that moving from offline DV to online can allow in some bugs, but the ins/outs, clip names, frame rates, haven't changed. And of course I've been editnig 29.97 DV this whole time without seeing any of the interlacing on the monitor or tyhe outputs. Could field dominance have anything to do with this? I've never adjusted that in previous applications of this workflow, so it doesn't seem relevant, but I confess I'm not sure what I'm messing with there. Do I need still more RAM? The computers we ran at school a couple of years ago were running 10 bit video on G5s without significant upgrades to my knowledge, and this is just a single stream with a few tracks of audio here. I'm afraid to spend any more $$ until I'm pretty confident it'll solve the problem (shoestring budget here of course). Any thoughts?
    Many thanks.
    -Jeremy

Thanks for the reply. I don't really have a way to hook up my computer to a broadcast monitor. I know I should, but can't really afford the card to do it. So I color corrected my footage carefully during telecine, and for things like this issue, I'm making DVDs quick and dirty through iDVD, then watching them on my home TV (an LCD that plays both SD and HD).
I suppose something in my DVD player and/or TV might be giving me the weirdness in the display, but I think I mentioned I did this same workflow before on a lowly G4, and back then while the computer display showed the interlacing problems, the final output looks fine on the same TV/DVD setup I'm using now. (And I also output that timeline on the previous project to a digibeta master and it looked great too--unfortunately no way to test that digibeta output on the present project without going to a post house, which of course cuts into the budget.)
Maybe I need to bite the bullet and stop being so cheap, but I'm hung up on the fact that it worked fine before, and I can't see how this stronger computer is performing comparatively poorly.
BTW I do see the interlacing in FCP viewer and canvas, but only when it's set to 100% size. And it looks identical in Quicktime as well.
The other thought that just occurred to me is that it might be a codec issue. Perhaps the uncompressed 10 bit codec on my new machine isn't quite the same 10 bit uncompressed as the Kona card used to capture the video for both new and old projects. Maybe my old computer worked ok because that codec was slightly different, or I may have even copied the codec to that computer at some point in the past.
Any of this spur any other ideas? Again I really appreciate the help...
    -Jeremy

  • Weird freezing issues

    hi all.
im on an older mac pro and having some weird freezing issues.
-expose 'show all' and 'minimize' tend to freeze my display mid-animation (mouse and all)
-at least once a day, usually when using RAM heavy applications, my screen will freeze, but the mouse will keep moving. i cant move anything on the screen besides the mouse. if audio is playing when the screen freezes, it keeps playing. despite the mouse seeming to work, space bar fails to stop the music. after about a minute, the mouse icon is usually replaced by the pinwheel, which spins indefinitely.
    ive already:
    -run the apple hardware test
    -tested my RAM
    -bought & run norton antivirus
but nothing has been found wrong...
any thoughts on what to try next?
    a million thanks
    mike

If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install will also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
    Cheers! DALE
    p.s. Here's a rewiew of DiskWarrior 4.

However, itunes can not do anything with the phone because the phone is locked and I can not unlock the phone because the screen is black.
    >CURVEBALL!!!<
The screen does work though! Through trial and error along side a little troubleshooting, I was able to figure out that the screen will cut on after the phone dies completely. The phone has to die completely with no battery power left. Then if I plug the phone into a charge and wait a while for it to charge, the phone will turn on like nothing was ever even wrong with it. I charge the phone up to like 30% and turn it off then bam the phone turns on but the screen is solid black again.
I am currently in the process of waiting for the phone to die and when I turn the phone back on I am going to completely remove the auto-lock and lock code off of the phone for the time being.
    Any other suggestions? Please help!

Sounds like the device was dropped at some point and damaged as a result.
Take it to Apple for evaluation and a replacement.

  • Display issue on brand new 2014 X1 Carbon Touch

So I was about to start raving about my X1C that I just received. Loving the display, the keyboard, build quality, etc. I had no gripes and was just browsing away when suddenly the screen did the full glitch. I recognize this as what happens when something's messed with the motherboard/display adapter. So I gave it a reset. All was normal and then it happened again. I was able to replicate it 3-4 times and it keeps happening. I never dropped it or anything. It was always just stationary.
I can't believe this. I had problems with the first gen non-touch and touch. I was hoping by now they have improved.

  • Display Issues with mini (Mid 2010) and LG L246WP

I recently purchased a new mini (Mid 2010 base model) and planned to use it with my 24" LG L246WP monitor, which is about 3 years old. The monitor has VGA, component, and HDMI inputs.
I used an HDMI-to-HDMI cable to connect the mini directly to the monitor, and the output is completely messed up. The mini recognized the monitor (titling the System Preferences > Display dialog with 'L246WP') and set it to the monitor's native resolution of 1920x1200, but on the monitor the image is cropped to what looks like a 4:3 aspect ratio and with part of the image shifted up and left so I cannot view the top menu bar or the left hand side of the desktop. The monitor's on-screen display shows 1080p in this mode.
The Display dialog also gives me an option for 1080p. I can select this and use the Underscan slider to resize the desktop output to fit on the screen, but it is still shifted left and must be resized smaller than the available display space (plus the total image is only 1080 pixels, not using the monitor's full native screen). In this mode, 1080p also shows on the monitor's on-screen display.
I tried 1024x768 to see if I could get a properly-positioned image, but the desktop was shifted just like in the 1920x1200 case and the monitor's on-screen display status still reported 1080p.
The monitor has a menu setting under an HDMI heading with "Video" and "PC" options, but changing this selection does not make a difference.
Since the monitor came out before HDMI was as widespread as it is today, it came with a DVI-to-HDMI cable, so I also tried using that cable with the HDMI-to-DVI adapter that came with the mini, but this did not make a difference either.
To prove it wasn't the HDMI cable, I connected the mini to my Samsung 6300 series 40" LED HDTV and with some tweaking of the Underscan slider the displayed image filled the screen perfectly.
I've searched the Internet and various forum threads (i.e. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1167222&page=63) seem to indicate this monitor can send a corrupted EDID that causes issues, especially with nVidia graphics drivers. On Windows you can use registry or driver hacks to override the EDID with the correct values, but on OS X this doesn't seem possible (I was hoping for a Terminal one-liner but it seems this doesn't exist). I have seen some mentions of the shareware SwitchResX (http://www.madrau.com), which looks like it gives you the option to override resolution settings, but I haven't tried this yet.
It also appears to me that the monitor is always interpreting the signal (or the mini is always sending the signal) as 1080p, even if I've set 1920x1200 in the Display dialog. I don't know if this is a defect in the monitor where it always assumes the HDMI input is a 1080p source (previous I used it with an Xbox 360 with no issues but that was 1080p HDMI), or if is a bug in the graphics drivers (or at least a lack of flexibility / miscommunication to the user trying to handle a corrupt EDID).
I asked my local Genius Bar for advice today (without bringing any hardware in) but was not told anything I didn't already know.
I'm trying to determine the best way to work through this issue. *My questions are:*
Would it make any difference if I used a Mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter (and then my DVI-to-HDMI cable to the monitor's HDMI input)?
What about a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter? In the past I used a 12" Powerbook (via a mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter) with this monitor and had no display issues like this, but I'd prefer to stick with a digital connection on my brand new mini.
Is SwitchResX the only practical way in OS X to override a corrupt EDID and force the mini to output a certain resolution?
Besides the various adapters and SwitchResX, is there anything else I should try before buying a new monitor?

    Hello EPWilson4984.
I have been experiencing the same issues you described. Connecting my brand new Mac Mini to my Westinghouse 24”monitor (L2410NM,  1920x1200 pixel resolution) produces a very fuzzy and washed out image quality. The Mac recognizes the monitor and applies the right resolution (1920x1200), but it looks just awful. The EDID info is definitely not right.
Now, I tried your suggestion (DVI-to-HDMI), and similar suggestions from other threads, but nothing works. Nothing seems to work at all.
The main input for the monitor is HDMI, so whatever cable I use, in the end always has to connect to the monitor via HDMI. I tried all these combinations with zero success:
Mac mini -> HDMI cable -> monitor (result: fuzzy and blurry image)
Mac mini -> displayport –HDMI adapter-> HDMI cable -> monitor (result: fuzzy and blurry image)
Mac mini  -> displayport –DVI adapter-> DVI-to-HDMI cable -> monitor (result: it gives me a blank screen, no image at all)
I’m running out of options. Don’t know what to do. The 24” monitor produces beautiful, crisp images when hooked to my Windows 7 PC. It looks horrible when connected to my brand new Mac Mini.
Any alternatives you may have come across? Please let me know, thank you.
