Weird driver using up CPU, driving my mac nuts
On my Macbook Pro, the Activity Monitor, shows something called 'LexmarkCUPSDriver' using 99% of the CPU, and the fan is going all the time, and the laptop gets hot. When I choose that process and Quit it, all goes back to normal. But when I restart there it is again. I tried searching for it, but no dice.
Anyone know what that is (I'm guessing it's a printer driver) and how to find it and make it go away without hurting anything? Thanks!

Use Spotlight to locate the driver, place it on your desktop and restart your computer. Try using the printer. If no issues crop up while running the printer, place the driver in a folder in case you need it later on.

Why does ENET-232 driver use 98% CPU?
I have an ENET-232/4 device running under Windows XP Professional and am talking to it using LabVIEW 6.1. I am taking readings from an instrument every 5 seconds, with a small data exchange (6 byte command, response is about 50 bytes). Everything seemed to work just fine, but when left overnight the computer was very sluggish. The nisdsusr process was using 98% of the CPU time, and it continued to do so until I quit LabVIEW. Stopping the vi, which closed the serial port, was not good enough. I re-started LabVIEW and my vi, and I can see the CPU usage jump up to 12%-14% every time I take a reading, and go to basically 0 in between. This is perfectly fine. Why did this process go to 100% CPU usage and how can I prevent it from happen
ing again? I am using the 1.01 serial device server driver, which is the latest version and is XP compatible (aside from the driver signing issue).I know this thread is old, but should anyone happen upon it...
This problem (I've had it too) happens when network communication is lost and the serial device server goes into some kind of loop waiting for a tcp ack that never comes back. Something like that. To fix it the port has to be closed that was being used then re-opened. I'm guessing this was your problem when leaving it to run... at some point network communications were lost and the driver went haywire and didn't recover. -
Time Machine on an External Hard Drive - used with another computer or mac?
I'm planning on selling my computer but want everything that is on my Mac saved so when I can afford to buy a new computer I will have all of my files, music, pictures, etc. I hooked up Time Machine to an external hard drive last night. So everything should be saved to the external hard drive now right?...will I be able to open any of those files on another computer using my external hard drive that has my backup on it? For example, if I have my resume as one of the files can I plug in my hard drive that has my Time Machine back up on it to open edit and resave the file? Or am I better of manually saving the files to the external hard drive without using Time Machine?
Please help...I need to sell my computer but don't want to lose any of my stuff on it...
Thanks!Time machine works great for the file you accidentally delete or modify even if you need to go back months and months. There are better solutions when you really just need to clone your existing system like CCC or Superduper. A clone is more flexible when it comes to getting your stuff. The only downside is you will lose the multiple copies time machine keeps. The upside is you know exactly what's on it and you can boot from it if needed. The file structure is definately more stable on a clone.
A time machine is OK for what you're doing. I just think a clone is better. The choice is yours. -
I just backed up my mac to an external hard drive using Time Machine. What would happen if I turn Time Machine off and then plug the external hard drive back into my computer?
What I am ultimately wanting to do is make more room on my computer by backing up all of my files onto the external hard drive and then deleting them off of my computer. However, neededing to be able to retrieve them from the external hard drive later down the road.
From what I have read and am trying to understand, is that I probably shouldn't have used time machine. I need to use the external hard drive like a basic flash drive where I can put things on and get things off without having it automatically update through time machine everytime I connect it to my computer.

Dont suffer the tragedy other people make, buy another or 2 more HD, theyre cheap as dust.
The number of people who have experienced terror by having a single external HD backup is enormous. One failure that WILL HAPPEN, and kaput,......all gone!

Deleting them off your computer is fine....having only ONE copy is extremely BAD.

Always presume correctly that your data is priceless and takes a very long time to create and often is irreplaceable. Always presume accurately that hard drives are extremely cheap, and you have no excuse not to have multiple redundant copies of your data copied on hard drives and squirreled away several places, lockboxes, safes, fireboxes, offsite and otherwise.
Hard drives aren't prone to failure…hard drives are guaranteed to fail (the very same is true of SSD). Hard drives dont die when aged, hard drives die at any age, and peak in death when young and slowly increase in risk as they age.
Never practice at any time for any reason the false premise and unreal sense of security in thinking your data is safe on any single external hard drive. This is never the case and has proven to be the single most common horrible tragedy of data loss that exists.
Many 100s of millions of hours of lost work and data are lost each year due to this single common false security. This is an unnatural disaster that can avoid by making all data redundant and then redundant again. If you let a $60 additional redundant hard drive and 3 hours of copying stand between you and years of work, then you've made a fundamental mistake countless 1000s of people each year have come to regret. -

I want to reformat my external hard drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted ) but before formatting it, I want to make sure that if I loose the hard drive or the hard drive get stolen, no one will be able to retrieve or recover the information on it so could you tell me what kind of encryption will be used or is there any way to recover the information?

I had files stored on a hard drive that were not on my Mac. I used the hard drive for my first Time Machine back up, but it was not enough hard drive space to finish. Now those stored files are gone. Is there any way I can recover them? No, they were not part of previous Time Machine backups, and I have checked both the hard drive the documents were lost on and the new one that I now use for backups. Any suggestions would be helpful, as the lost files are old pictures that are gone forever. :[ Thanks!
1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

I have a WD 2 tb hard drive that I want to use to back up my Mac Pro quad core. How do I create a back up startup disk? Also, when I used Time macine, it only backed up users and not the system or library folders. Ideas?

Time Machine should be enough to make a backup of your files. Also, it should back up all folders, so open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and make sure that there are no folders included in the excluded items list.
If you want to create a bootable clone of your hard drive, you need to use an app like Carbon Copy Cloner or the Disk Utility's Restore feature > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html -
If time machine puts all of my photos onto my external hard drive using time machine, can I then delete the photos from my computer but view them again from the external hard drive? Basically, can I free up space on my mac but not lose years of photos?
To add to Niel's comment bear in mind that if you have a backup copy on an external HD and later delete the orignals on your Mac HD you will then only have one copy - so no backup.
If the pictures are precious you should have at least two copies, and ideally another copy kept off site, -
When i look at how much hard drive space i have available, my mac says i have 250 gigs used up in backup. I can not find this backup file to delete it and free up the space

I'm using LR5.7 on a Mac Mini running Mavericks and when I attempt to import a folder of new RAW photos from my external drive into my catalog instead of seeing a preview of each thumbnail photo I see the following message displayed: "Preview Unavailable for this file." If I highlight any other folder of photos the previews are all there. What is the likely reason for these previews being unavailable? JohnnyCam

Ff stalls out when opening new tabs, using 100% cpu on mac
went to leave this in the feedback section but that doesnt work either, nothing gets sent. but anyways, new tabs always feeze or stall for over a min, using 100% cpu. running mac 10.6.8. never had problem on earlier versions of ff but ff5 is broken im sorry to say on macs. please advise or fix, more and more people are experiencing this same issue but nothing is being done to resolve.
16gb aint enough lol> imac 27 , top of line, ssd hdd, 16gb ram, all updates, if memory was bad it would happen on other browsers or apps, only happens when you specifically open a new tab.

Drive use between MAcs and PCs

I hope this is the right place for this query... I would like to extract a hard drive from a Sony laptop that is one year old (just out of warrantee and Sony won't fix it!) and hook it up to my MACBook or MAC Pro to delete data or reformat to destroy sensitive data before giving it to some student who think they can fix the thing... Can I access the data with my MAC and reformat it to whatever format (MAC or other does not matter as long as the data is gone)?

I tried to access USB drives with my work Windows based laptop and failed (could not see it in the Explorer while I could eject it - failing to would bring up the message of possible data corruption.. Is that normal? Or are these drives interchangeable with the latest windows PCs (my work laptop uses Windows 2000, yes I know Barney Flintstone probably owned it one day).If the drive is formatted Windows NT, your Mac will be able to read the files on the drive, but you will not be able to change the files in any way, including dragging them to the trash. To delete the files, reformat the drive using Disk Utility. Be sure to click on the security options button and select "Zero Out Data." Otherwise, someone will still be able to recover your data from the drive.

USB flash drive use between PC and MAC
I have a usb flash drive that has files on it previously created using a PC. It contains excel, word and powerpoint files. I have Office for Mac and put some of the files on the mac edited them and then tried to save them or move them back onto the drive, but cannot. I get a variety of messages including the disk is full and it is not and that it is write protected, but USB flash drives cannot be write protected. Are usb drives portable between mac and PCs?
hey man.
Save the files on the jump drive to a folder on the mac. Keep it in a good spot cuz your going to need it.
Open disk utilities on the mac.
click on the correct usb drive in the screen, and then click erase. U will have formatting options in a drop down tab, pick "FAT" or "FAT 32" which it is, name it and hit erase.
This will reformat the drive to a windows usable file format, and the mac will work with it no problem.
Once reformat is complete close disk util. and open the mounted USB drive, found on the desktop and drag the folder you had created to it and your good to go.
windows should have no problem reading it at all now.
