"weird" DVD in my AGP G4

here is one i have never experienced before. i just got this G4 AGP, and when i start up the machine, the DVD's tray opens up and stays open [probably when the system detects the drive on boot-up]. if i don't shut it myself, it will stay open, and then shut on its own after probably 10 or 15 minutes. the player works...after a fashion [takes a while for it to start up when i put a disk in]. what i find irritating is if i want to access the OS boot disk directly, it takes an act of some unnamed deity to get the system to boot off the disk.....because the DVD wants to open up at start-up. i have tried a couple different hard drives, with OS 10.4 installed, so i don't think it is a software issue. anyone ever experience this?
do you think its the drive, or something in the POST, or some firmware issue? i haven't tried a different CD/DVD drive for comparison, just seems like an odd malfunction.

Hi, rtabish -
One known cause for that behavior (optical drive tray opening at startup) concerns a feature of the Mac's hardware-based command set - if the mouse button is held down during boot, it forces the ejection of all removable media. This action will open the optical drive's tray regardless of whether there is a disk in it.
The problem comes when a USB device inadvertantly generates a signal that the Mac interprets as being a mouse-down signal. A device doing this can be most anything USB; items which have been reported as being the culprit include - iMate adapter; dongle; digitizing tablet; printer; and even the extension cable that came with the machine, intended for use with the keyboard.
Try reducing the USB items connected to just the keyboard and mouse, ideally Apple-label ones. Then add one or two items back in and test until the problem recurs.
Sometimes a powered USB hub will filter out such a signal; this may not be a suitable solution for a dongle.
Relatedly, if you have anything plugged into the keyboard, try relocating it to a different port.

My experience includes a dead keyboard, caused by an optical mouse connected to it. Reconfiguring the USB scheme such that the mouse was plugged into a powered port on my monitor fixed the problem.

  • Weird DVD drive issue on Windows Boot Camp on Macbook Pro

Hi, I just installed Windows on my Macbook Pro with Boot Camp. Windows itself works fine, then I tried installing Fallout 3. The installation took a really long time, which I thought was weird. I tried to play the game but it timed out in trying to read the disc. To further test this, I threw in a movie DVD and tried to play it. Windows Media Player said I didn't have a compatible DVD decoder. I tried playing the dvd in Mac OS and it works fine. I've also run the Leopard DVD install for Boot Camp fine. I used the Windows XP video decoder and it has determined that I don't have an MPEG-2 decoder installed. What I'm confused about is that if I manage to get a hold of a decoder, will that affect other processes, such as reading the DVD for video games?

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
by design courtesy of Microsoft the Media Player is not capable of playing DVDs unless an appropriate DVD-Decoder is installed.
You can use an alternative media player like VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc
But this should not affect the usage of Windows Games, since usually a Games manufacturer puts all needed software to run his games onto the games CD/DVD, so it has to be something else preventing Fallout 3 from running.
Time-outs when trying to read/check the disc can be sometimes caused by 'dirt' on the disc (fingerprints, scratches, etc.).
    Check for that.
Also make sure to have not installed programs for 'Virtual-Disc-Drives' like Daemon-Tools and/or Disc-Burning software like Nero, since these can also hinder the game from running.
    Hope it helps
    Stefan

  • Really weird DVD burning issue

Here's the background...I needed a new opitcal drive, so had it installed. Also had a bad HD so had that replaced. Was running Mac OS X 2.something. (I know, I know)
Got the computer back and tried burning a project with DVDSP2. No luck, so I installed DVDSP3 (which I already had for a different computer).
Now when I go to create a project and hit the "burn" icon, I immediately get a message saying "formatting successful, disk created" I'm talking INSTANTLY it says this.
I repaired permissions, trashed preferences, everything I could think of. The repair tech said he burned multipel discs using toast, so I know the drive works.
What's up with this? Anyone? Please! (thanks)

Under Format / General / Destination, is the output device under Destination the proper drive?

  • Satellite A200-1N1 - How to activate AGP?

Help me, please! I speak english very bad.
My notebook: Toshiba Satellite A200-1N1, OS: Vista
My problem: when I open program, message shows up: "*WARNING* +The game may not be consistant because AGP is deactivated. Please activate AGP for consistancy+"
My question: How can I activate AGP?
I'm looking forward your answer... Thank you.

I've never heard of "activate AGP" before so as far as I'm concerned if your video drivers are working and you can watch stuff like DVDs etc then AGP is already activated.
It does sounds like the game you are trying to run isn't compatible with the onboard Intel GMA X3100 which isn't surprising considering Intel do not make powerful gaming cards.
However double check with the game's manufacturer maybe they have bug fixes or updates for your laptop.

  • How Did I Burn This Weird Disk ?

In another post I described how I had come across a weird DVD I had made a year ago that would not play in anything. When put in the Mac and double-clicked it displayed a Video_RM and a Video_TS folder - BOTH EMPTY!
Yet on using "Get Info" it was revealed there was 3.7GB of video on the disk.
PT showed me how to play it by using the "Open Video_TS Folder" command.
However, the other puzzle remains. Why was there a Video_RM and a Video _TS folder both apparently empty?
Also how did I burn this weird disk? It is actually a copy of a standalone DVD Recorder disk.
I believe I used Disk Utility to burn it, but why can I only access the video by using the “Open Video_TS” command in DVD Player?
    Ian.

It is actually a copy of a standalone DVD Recorder dis
my guess is, this is a non-finalized dvd...
after recording which such a device, in many cases you have to finalize the disk ... that has to be ignited "manually" (on my Pionerr standalone....)
a videoDVD within specs has two folders VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS (which is empty, because only in use for socalled SuperAudio disks....)
inside the video_ts you normally find some .iso and .vob files, which contain the mpeg2 encoded audio+video... (you can rename a .vob to .mp2...)
video_rm seems to be something non-standard..
the "emptyness" is just a sign of your Finder, which has no clue, what this disk contains => the whole file-management is missing... like in a book without directory: the story is in, but you are not able to find a specific chapter...
you should have told us about the "from standalone" in your first post, I could have told you earlier...

  • Help Identifying my G4

I have a powermac g4 model #5183. I have read the support page about how to determine which g4 you have.. but I don't see this one on the list. I read alot of posts here about how to figure it out also. but I am still having trouble.
it has a single 400mhz processor, dvd drive, 1 agp graphics card (rage 128?), has 3 open slots next to it. has 4 slots for memory which I have installed for now 512mb (upgrading to 1.5gb). the sound ports are verticle. there are 2 usb ports and 2 firewire ports. I am thinking this is the g4agp model. or the gigabit ethernet. ?? not sure. I am going to replace the hard drive with a 200gb drive. I am upgrading the memory. I would like to upgrade the graphics card. any suggestions? what type of card can I buy for the upgrade? is it a ati radeon card that I can get? when I try to look at them online they all say they are compatible with windows vista, xp ect. but not mac. will they work for a mac? Would a 128mb card make a whole world of difference compared to what is in there now? I know I asked alot of ?'s. thanks for any help. I appreciate it!

  • Macbook not reading internal or external drives?

I have a weird DVD issue with my Macbook Po 2.16
Firstly the DVD started to spit any disc you put in it as they sometimes do, so rather than fork out to replace the drive in an aging computer I opted for an external burner.
and here is the weird but, the external USB burner acts exactly the same - you put a disc in and it just spins - both drives are recognized by disc utility and the external works fine on my office machine just not my macbook.
This leads me to think it may be software / drivers related, anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks
Already tried that, I probably should have said that it is happening with any disc that is put in - original DVD, data or RW.
My original thought was it was a duff drive but I get exactly the same prob on the external dvd drive, as this works fine when plugged into another mac I am assuming it may be software or driver related?
Tried repairing disc permissions, anyone got any advice?

Try disconnecting the card reader cable from the mainboard. You may have connected it to the wrong socket.
It should be attached to CR1. The symptoms are similar to those I experienced when I plugged the cable into socket JKBMS1 (they are the same size and located close to each other).
It wasn't until I downloaded the User Guide that I found my mistake. Once the cable was disconnected or plugged into the correct socket everything came to life.
It's a good idea to leave this cable disconnected until Windows has been installed otherwise the Card Readers grab Drive Letters C & D and your operating system gets installed onto Drive F.

  • Sony DVD Burner and 350 mhz AGP not being recognised by iTunes

I managed to get a Sony DVD Burner for my friends Powermac g4 AGP, the sales assistant sais it would be comatible for macs....it installed fine and wa sable to read dvd's perfectly, when my friend went to burn a CD from iTunes it would not work as it seems the drive is not supported. I have tried finidng some drivers all over the sony website for it but to no avail. I don't suppose anyone has any experience with this brand of burner? Any help would be appreciated thanks.

As I recall, Sony's internal DVD burners are made by Lite-On, but as far as the G4 is concerned - the drive's firmware indicates a Sony product. A compatibilty problem for burning a disk occurs, when the CD/DVD drive is newer than the supporting profiles for Apple's Disk Burner software. Have you checked into "PatchBurn?" Other than that, your friend could purchase Roxio's "Toast," which has more user settings than Apple's software.

  • Weird screen pattern freezes iMac, can't boot from HD or DVD

I woke up today to find the screen of my iMac black with a sparse pattern of bright pixels on it. I wasn't able to power down holding the Power buton so I unplugged it and left it for a bit before plugging back in. I was then able reboot without any problems. Then a few hours latter a weird pattern appeared across my screen, kind of rolling, animated in spots as seen here:
I powered down, started it up and the screen had this pattern on it:
It froze during startup at the point shown in the photo with the Apple logo. I powered down, unplugged, plugged back in and then tried booting up from my Snow Leopard install disc. It also froze on the logo screen. Another attempt brought up the "You need to restart your computer…" message in different languages shown here:
I figured it was having a kernel panic so I did some searching around and followed instructions on The X Lab - Resolving Kernel Panics page and Apple's Kernel Panic Troubleshooting page. I unplugged everything but my mouse (wireless keyboard) and tried booting into Safe Mode. The screen still had the same pattern but it froze again during startup, the grey progress bar having disappeared.
I can't boot from my hard drive or from a DVD and the pattern is always on screen when I turn the iMac back on. I can't run Apple Hardware Test. I'm stuck but I'm wondering if anyone knows what the cause might be or has any suggestions on how to fix it or even get it to boot up somehow.
I have TechTool Pro and a large flash drive. I'm going to try creating a bootable USB drive with Snow Leopard on it from this backup computer and try to get TechTool Pro on it as well. I'll report back but I'd really appreciate any feedback on this problem.

Some things to report. First, the night before any of this happened, I noticed the fan was running when there wasn't really any reason for it. The computer was idle, no major tasks running. I'm wondering if perhaps the videocard overheated and is causing problems. Perhaps the temperature sensors are screwed up?
Today I got a USB keyboard hooked up and reset the PRAM. Still unable to boot but the pattern on the screen did change from the mess of b&w squigglies above to vertical bars as shown here:
Trying to boot normally or in Safe Mode both result in the spinning wheel freezing and halting startup.
I found powering down then gets weird. It's like it tries to turn on again but can't after a second. Or sometimes it will and the mouse lights up, I can hear the optical drive but the screen stays dark. At that point I need to unplug and try again.
I tried booting from Snow Leopard install DVD during one of these weird cycles and could hear it trying to access the optical drive but I don't believe it even got to the chime stage.
I attempted booting from the install DVD again after unplugging. No luck there but instead of a frozen spinning wheel, it brings up the "You need to restart message…". Other methods don't do this.
Still at a loss to find a reason for this but it appears to be a hardware problem, no doubt the video card based on the screen issues. Does any of this shed any light on what the problem is or (even better) how to fix it?

  • Optical drive makes weird noise when CD/DVD is inserted, won't play

OK so...When I put a CD or a DVD into the optical drive, it makes this weird consistant sound that, while i feel like an idiot typing it out, sounds something like: eee ooh ooh eee ooh ohh eee ooh ooh.
It does this for a couple minutes until it responds to me pushing the eject button.
    Anyone know what this is?

    Anyone know what this is?
I would guess a hardware failure.

  • DVD will not play and states "supported disk not available" and makes a weird noise and then ejects the dvd

My MacbookPro is only 5 months old and in really good condition. The only problem I am encountering is that when I insert any type of dvd disc, it starts to make this weird grinding noise that goes eeee-eeee, and then does that a couple of times and then the disc ejects on its own. When i try to play it with idvd, it does the same noise thing and then iDvd state "supported disk not available". The dvd does not even read on the computer.

If only five months old it is still under warranty. Take it back.

  • Weirdness when reviewing DVD photos in iPhoto

I have a 20" iMac purchased earlier this year. I have more than one library in iPhoto, and I back up each library to a DVD using the Share/Burn command.
When I insert a burned DVD into the iMac it shows up in the Source Pane of iPhoto. When I click on it the pictures show up. So far, so good, but then weirdness begins when I double click on one of the pictures to view it full screen. A small version of the desired picture appears on the monitor screen with the message "Loading photo.." below it. This is accompanied by a churning sound within the monitor which continues for about 40 seconds before the picture finally appears full screen. The churning sound then continues for about another 40 seconds before it finally quits. This process seems very strange to me. Why does it take so long for the full screen picture to appear, and what is the churning sound all about? Is this normal? I don't experience any of this weirdness when I normally review photos in my iPhoto libraries.
    Bob

    Bob:
Yes, that's about normal. The DVD read speed is not that fast, particularly when compared to viewing on our speedy internal HDs. A good alternative, budget providing, is an external FW HD. Great for daily incremental backups and for running other libraries from. Very cost effective insurance against loss of irreplaceable photos and other documents.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
