Weird Epson scanner problem

I have an Epson Perfection 610 scanner. I've downloaded the driver from Epson's website, and everything behaves perfectly. The little preview image of the document to be scanned looks great, but when I do the actual scan, the saved image is a garbled mess of diagonal lines. It's the same, whether I save a JPEG or a TIFF, and whether I do it through Preview or through the Epson application.
Any idea what is causing this? Thanks!

Further issues with the wonderful Mac OS X Snow Leopard. After many years of Microsoft, I am conversant with hardware, software issues.
I have my first Mac, iMac 27" (very pretty, but has various bizarre, problems, in my opinion).
When I first plugged my Epson Perfection V350 scanner in, it worked perfectly. All apps were able to see it and use it. Now, I suspect after a number of automatic updates, none of my apps can access the scanner - all report no scanner found.
The most up to date Epson drivers are installed - Epson scan works fine. I now have to scan, save an then import the file into my apps. Pretty poor.
Epson have no answers to this, nor do Apple.
For the world's most advanced operating system, I am amazed at how 'clunky' it appears to be.
I have tried uninstalling the software and scanner a couple of times - no effect whatsoever.
If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.
Cheers!
Mike

  • Epson scanner problems

I upgraded to mavrick and my Epson PX720WD will scan, but only jpg.  ( printer works fine- so there's no problem there)
I use it to scan black and white mulitpage docs a lot.
I can go around the houses and make a b/w pdf from the jpg, but before it was so much easier and now I can't seem to scan multipage docs
I've been on the Epson site, and tried some downloads but can't find anything that replaces the "Epson scan"
Anyone out there that can help please?
    Thanks Hap

Have you tried Preview or ImageCapture?

  • This Is Going To Sound Kind Of Stupid ..... Epson Scanner Problems ??

I jgot frustrated when I could no longer use my Epson Perfection 1200 Scanner after upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.3.1 ... I tried everything, copying files from Time Machine Backups, to downloading all lkinds of silly software from Epson's Website. I did as they instructed, and it failed miserably. I downloaded the Printer Update from Apples website, the instructions showed my model's drivers were included. When I went loolking after the Installl, if they were installed, I sure would like to know where. I was seriously thinking I was going to have to cave in and just fork out more money for more harware throwing out what used to be a perfectly good piece of computer equipment for my needs.
I finally went thru the tons and tons of computer software install discs I have for all of the equipment I've bought over the years, making a complete disaster area all along one side of my home office. I came across the CD Installer for my Epson CX4200 All In One Printer/Fax/Scanner.
It was for version OSX 10.2 & 10.3 ..... I figured I had nothing to lose so I installed it. With this
Installation comes an application called PhotoImpression which I checked off toi Install as well.
Well, to my wonderous delight, It worked! If I open up PhotoImpressions when I want to scan, It has a feature that allows you to choose where you want to :"Grab" your photo, document or whatever from, giving me the option to either choose the CX4200 Scanner, Or the Perfection 1200 Scanner.
Oh Joy Oh Joy .... If you have any old Installation Disks hanging around, you just might wan't to give it a try.
    Steve

    Hmm, well that's a non-sequitar.
You are aware that PhotoImpressions is obsolete? It is not a universal binary and requires using Rosetta to run. Maybe you should consider finding a suitable replacement for it. I'm not even sure how old the product is, and i doubt Epson still bundles it with its scanners.
As I suggested before you might consider using VueScan as a replacement for the scanning application. There are plenty of good image editors that are freeware - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
    You're not running 10.3 anymore.

  • Weird scanner problem, no program works but vuescan

Today i installed my epson xp-201 printer/scanner to scan some photos. I was able to scan once, but when i want to scan another photo, it never worked again.
When i ran scanimage -L, i saw the scanner just once too, and it never appeared again. I changed the usb cable, and rebooted the system several times with same results.
But, vuescan works perfect. It's so weird...
    Thanks in advance!

Apologies if this is classified as thread necromancy, but this was extremely helpful! Such a simple thing fixed it for my Epson XP-215.
Having to do this as root is not exactly an ideal solution! However in my case I think that the problems are not yet triaged and there are many reported issues running scanners with usb3 ports on the machine they are connected to, with analogous posts on forums for a number of different linux distributions. I have also more recently been engaged in a developer thread on the xsane dev list and provided diagnostics as best I can, but it is still not clear whether there are issues with the usb code in the kernel, the libusb code or within sane itself.  I was able to get at the packet stream whilst the scanner failed using usb debugging and capturing the stream with wireshark. However the developers have not been able to tie down what the problem is so this is ongoing.
In your case it would be interesting to know if you were using a usb3 or a usb2 port on the computer?

  • Microsoft problem in image aquisition from Epson scanner

I cannot get my Epson Perfection 3200 Photo to scan even using its own Epson Scan program. I always used Photoshop 7 to scan and import the images easily. Then we moved to a new house, and when I went to reconnect everything, Microsoft doesn't recognize the Epson scanner no matter what I do. Epson technicians were not able to help. I believe that it's a Microsoft acquisition problem. It says "Could not open the TWAIN source". Should I just remove everything that has to do with Epson, even the plug-in in Photoshop, then recalibrate my monitor and reload Epson after that? --thank you, L Williamson

Re-installing is the first step, make sure after the un-install that you remove any vestiges of the install left over. Disconnect the scanner while doing this. After you are finished, shut off the computer, re-connect and start the scanner, start the computer again and let Windows find it and then install the latest software for the scanner.

  • Epson 3170 scanner problem

Apple has effectively killed my Epson 3170 scanner. I have followed most of the post here trying to solve this problem. I have deleted Epson scan and downloaded the driver from Epson that is supposed to work with image capture, but it will not work. This is extremely frustrating when you had a perfectly good scanner and then you upgrade to 10.6 and download the apple drivers for Epson and then it no longer works. If anyone has an idea I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. I apologize if this is a repeat, but I have searched and cannot find a solution. HELP!

I had the same problem but just found the solution in another thread.
You will need to replace /Library/Image Capture/Devices/EPSON Scanner.app with an earlier version of the EPSON Scanner.app and then (for the time being) don't let Software Update install the Epson printer/scanner update. In my case, I didn't have the EPSON Scanner.app at all after installing Snow Leopard.
There's some more info and a download link for a June 2009 version (v 5.0) of the (driver) app in this forum message: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12031583&#12067887
So far, so good: I can confirm that my 3170 is working with Image Capture again using the downloaded app.

  • Epson Stylus CX6600 scanner problem with 10.6

I've read various posts about scanner functions not working after upgrading to 10.6.x. I too have this problem now with my Epson Stylus CX6600. This machine has been a real workhorse for me for 6 years and up until this week it has been trouble-free. It prints absolutely fine as usual but the new OS can't 'find' its scan function.
    So far I've :
1 Deleted the driver and reinstalled via Software Update
2 System Prefs : Printer/Fax : when I select 'Scan' the queue window opens and reads "No Scanner Selected"
3 Image Capture : "No Scanner or camera selected"
4 Preview : "Epson Stylus CX6600 was disconnected"
No matter what I try my iMac will not recognise the fact that I have a scan option.
I know others have had this problem in the past but the posts remain "unanswered". My assumption is they either fixed it or gave up.
If anyone has the answer, I'd be most appreciative to hear it!
    TIA
    Joolster
PS : Our MacBook is connected to an Epson Stylus SX215 multifunction - print & scan working perfectly fine on that.

    (1) Happily, you can get the 4.1.0 file from the 10.5.8 Combo Update. (I don't know which of the previous updates introduced it — to save time, I looked only in this combo update, the last for Leopard.) Download the standalone installer from the Apple site.
    (2) You must also have a file called "EPSON Stylus CX6600.ds", which belongs in "/Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/". If it's not there, you can get it from Epson:
    (a) Download the file for the CX6600 identified as "TWAIN Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v2.77A", with the filename "epson11802.dmg". It's described at the model's downloads page, and the direct link is "ftp://ftp.epson.com/drivers/epson11802.dmg".
    (b) Epson seems to have messed up the content type of the file, or made some other error, because Safari at first tries to open it in the browser as though it's a movie. Give it a minute or two to sort itself out. If it never starts downloading, use an FTP program to get the file.
    (c) Once you have it, mount it and run Epson Scan Installer.
    (3) Next, go into "/Library/Image Capture/Devices/" and trash the file "Epson Scanner". (Well, you might want to just stash it somewhere else, in case you ever need to use an up-to-date Epson scanner.)
    (4) Download a program called Pacifist, if you don't already have it. You will use it to extract from the 10.5.8 Combo Updater only the file that you need.
    (5) Open the combo updater in Pacifist, and look for a file called "EPSON Scanner.app". Its location in the combo updater package is "/Library/Image Capture/Devices". Select this file and click the "Install" button in the toolbar.
    (6) "EPSON Scanner.app" should now be in your Devices folder. Double-click on it to launch it. (It runs in the background, so you won't see an icon in the dock, but you .)
    (7) At this point, you should be able to power up and connect your CX6600, launch Image Capture, and scan as usual. (The EPSON Scan application, which will have been installed in your Applications folder during step 2, if it was not already there, should also function.)

  • Problems with Image Capture for Epson Scanner

When using image capture for my Epson scanner, at the Image Correction, when I select Manual I get no menu options.

There is no Epson scanner utility for Mountain Lion, it appears. Even Epson's FAQ defers to Image Capture and says it only provides software for image modification.
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&info Type=FAQ&oid=207953&foid=214278&cat=214269&subcat=214264
Unfortunately Image Capture completely fails to provide the service it should be expected to. The 3rd party software VueScan seems like it would be adequate once I learned how to manipulate it a little more, but ultimately the only decision I can justify is to hook up the scanner to my Windows PC and use the TWAIN-based scan utility there.
If there's anywhere I can make an official plea to Apple to get Image Capture in a workable state, feel free to point the way.

    Hello Achates:
I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

  • Can't install epson scanner

I'm new to the mac. Have a nice new mac pro but one problem. I can't install my epson scanner. In checking for driver for the mac from epson the only one they currently have is a beta version which even they acknowledge has a lot of glitches. So I clearly do not want to muck up a new mac with a junky piece of software.
I can think of no way around this. Anyone have any ideas?
Scanner is an Epson Perfection 1640SU model.
    Thanks,
    Ann

About install of scanner. I wrote my question about installing it. Fiddled around with it one more time. It didn't work, I was disgusted. Shut down the computer and went shopping.
Came home, turned on the computer, and lo and behold, up pops a window indicating that the scanner was ready to scan.
    And---it was. Works fine.
Maybe, not sure but maybe, once the driver is installed you need to re-boot the computer. It might be worth trying to see if that's the deal with this thing. No guarantees, of course, mine was just a lucky happenstance.

  • VUESCAN & V550 EPSON SCANNER

I need some help from the experts here. I recently bought Vuescan in order to get the best out of my new Epson 550V. But the Vuescan does not see that scanner. I also have a Canon all in one printer that scans & Vuescan does see & scan from it.
The Epson Scanner software does see & scan from the 550
Image cature only offers the Canon all in one as a source but not the Epson.
System Printer & Scanner prefs pane does not see the Epson scanner
In "about this mac" system report" USB it does see that the Epson scanner is connected to the computer
I exchaned many emails with Ed Hamerick of Vuescan but he finnally gave up & could not resolve the problem
Does any have any ideas as to how I can get this epson scanner recognized by vuescan as well as image capture?

For those who come across this problem I have found a soution.
Sometime I get very motivated by a challenge!!! I noticed a posting on the Appe Discussion Board about ICA driver that would allow for using the Epson Scanner in Image Capture so I d loaded it from http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid= 231162&prodoid=63097270&infoType=Downloads&detected=yes&platform=OSF_M_X9 &
After I installed the ICA driver everything was fixed. The Epson Scanner shows up in Vuescan & works properly. It now shows up  in “Printer & Scanner” preference pane, & it shows up in Image Capture.

  • Epson scanner isn't communicating

    Hi,
I have been using an Epson perfection 1200U scanner for a while now until yesterday I went to scan artwork (using Photoshop 6.0) but couldn't. Two error messages came up (with red hand icon):
"Problem communicating with the scanner. Function not implemented."
Then another: "Could not complete the import command because of a problem with the scanner." After the messages then my imac freezes and I always have to force quit. Lamp on my scanner went from green (which is normal) to a still red! Never seen it light up red before. It says that the interface setup is wrong in my scanner's mannual if a red light appears.
I have unplugged and plugged everything back in but the error still occurs!
Previously, I have had quite a few strange things happening to my imac recently including a flashing '?' in icon folder at startup (happened for the first time). So I had to reinstall the system software. Could this be a reason for the scanner not communicating properly? I don't think the scanner is broken, perhaps applications have been misplaced or moved about somewhere without me knowing (can this happen?). Or it could be the USB cable that might have died. I just don't know why this has happened...I have never experienced this problem before.
Can someone please help as I am in desperate need of scanning a lot of urgent work.
    Many thanks,
    Hayley

Hi Robbie, thanks for your reply.
No, it isn't actually the first scan since I had to reinstall the system software (it's probably about the second or third).
I haven't got the original scanner's driver, so when we installed it 4 years ago, we just downloaded the driver from the Epson website (which I have copied onto a cd) but it seems that it is still installed.
Could it be that a file (relating to Epson scanner) has been placed (for some odd reason) somewhere else perhaps? Does anything actually need to be placed in the Extensions for it to function (which I need to know about)?
Oooh, I have just noticed that the 'EPSON Scanner Monitor Setup' icon has moved into the apple scroll bar (top left) which I'm sure wasn't there before! Could that be the problem?
I need expert help as I am still pretty clueless regarding files/folders/extensions and where everything should be placed for the mac to behave itself wisely. There are generally quite a few page icons on my hd which I haven't got a clue as to what they are and whether I should delete or just leave! I just need to make sure that everything is placed (scanner files) where it should be.
The other problem could be that the scanner's USB lead is dead, but how can I tell? Also, I forgot to mention that my USB hub port isn't working either (well, the lights don't come on) even when I plug the power adapter in. I have already tried plugging the scanner's USB lead directly into one of the iMac's hubs, but still no luck.
I have a feeling the problem is something to do with the data on my mac e.g a file has been placed where it shouldn't be. Like I said previously, I am positive it is not actually the scanner that is broken.
Can anyone help me further? I would be so grateful if anyone could sort this problem out.
    Thanks

  • Epson scanner not work with Mountain Lion?

I have an Epson Expressio 1600Pro scanner with transparency adaptor. It has worked perfectly with previous Macs using OSX 10.4. I have recently bought a MacBook pro and upgraded it to OSX 10.8. I went to Epson's website to get a new driver etc. That tells you it can only be downloaded via Mac Software Update. That was duly done and installed. System prefs lists it under printer and scanners. OK
I have also installed Photoshop Elements 11 and expected to be able to scan direct to there but nothing seems possible. Going to Help says use Image capture or Preview. Yes! there is a small very rudimentary scanning window appears in both apps. Now the problem! Nothing happens. I have tried ALL the various meagre settings on offer, changing size, resolution, custom etc and all that happens is a small rectangle of a scan occurs but no resulting file.
I have been on to Epson who say ONLY image capture will work with 10.8 but as it is a 3rd party software they can offer no assistance. Well image capture does NOT work. I have spent all afternoon trying various things like restarting, unplugging, reconnecting etc etc nothing.
10.8 does seem very buggy. I have even had to stop using Mail and Safari simply because it doesn't work whereas Thunderbird and Firefox work very well.
But I digress, does anyone have any thoughts please?

The following comments are based on installing an Epson RX700 All-in-one printer/copier/scanner so they may not be applicable to you but, for what it's worth here they are. The RX700 scanner worked perfectly with Snow Leopard and then Lion but, when I changed to Mountain Lion, and used the app store to download and install the drivers, I lost the Epson scanner utility (ie. the user interface that gives you all the scanner options).
However, if I used System Preferences and then the Print and Scan option, it brought up a small window where I could select either Print or Scan. Selecting Scan or Open Scanner from this window then opens up a window with all the scanner options in it, including an overview scan. This window has the option to either Hide Details (all the detailed scanner options - resolution, size, output file name etc) or Show them. As far as I can see, this window is actually the Image Capture app, although it doesn't say so.
It might be a long shot but try changing the Auto Selection box in this window to one of the other options (eg. "Detect Separate Items") or setting the "Scan to" to a file.

  • EPSON Scanner driver 3.03 (June 2007 release) for 4870

This is just a quick FYI for anyone unfortunate enough to have to reinstall there epson scanner drivers. Recently my epson 4870 scanner stopped working with my computer, tried all the usual stuff, permissions, restarting, unplugging other stuff etc. to no avail. So I phoned epson support.
They asked me to delete several epson related files in various folders - some files that I was asked to delete could not be found in the folders they asked me to look in. I pointed out that the driver software had an uninstall option, they said this wouldn't remove all the files.
We emptied the trash, installed the new 3.03 software and restarted, plugging things back in, repairing permissions etc. It still didn't work, I pointed out that 'epson scanner monitor' was no longer in the applications folder - I was told this wasn't required.
Curiously, in the apple system profiler under firewire the scanner seems to be shown as the letter 'G' manufacturer as just 'E' which I thought was strange. If I plug in using a USB cable it will display correctly under the USB list.
To cut a long story short, we spent over an hour going over and over this process, changing firewire cables, trying different ports, redownloading software and in the end I was told to contact apple as it had to be a problem with my machine (and also as it wasn't a PC he couldn't help any further).
I managed to dig out the original installer disk (epson scan, vers 2.0) that came with the machine several years ago, deleted previous files and reinstalled from that. It worked straight away, although I'm anticipating a few problems as this is so out of date.
I wondered if anyone has had similar problems and had managed to find a better solution.

I had a similar experience with the immediately previous version of EpsonScan, so I downloaded and installed 3.0.3 and things got worse. I then unplugged the scanner, uninstalled and reinstalled 3.0.3, thus far it is working. I hope it is not as buggy as 3.0.2

  • Epson Scanne stops during scan

    Hi,
Im on an iMac 2GHz G5 with 1GB RAM running OS X 10.4.8 with an Epson Perfection 2580 Photo scanner attached via USB.
Up to a couple of weeks ago, the scanner was working fine with both Photoshop Elements 3 and also the Mac Image Capture program. But recently after providing a preview and then starting a scan, the scanner bar scans to the end of the document and then just stopps. It stays at the end of the scanner for about 10mins and then returns to the front, in which time Photoshop has crashed and you have walked away!
I have uninstalled/reinstalled the Epson Scan driver software from their website and currently have version 3.1.0 installed. Rebooting is the only way to access the scanner when it stops working and today I deceide to have a look at the system logs.
The main system log shows the scanner activation and then posts and entry:
    "Feb 12 11:22:36 sue-craigies-imac-g5 crashdump[435]: EPSON Scanner crashed
    Feb 12 11:22:37 sue-craigies-imac-g5 crashdump[435]: crash report written to: /Users/suecraigie/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/EPSON Scanner.crash.log"
(I can foreward the Crash log to an email address if needed)
At the end of the system log a particular entry is repeated about 15 times:
"Feb 12 11:25:10 sue-craigies-imac-g5 /Applications/Image Capture.app/Contents/MacOS/Image Capture: CGContextSetLineWidth: invalid line width: negative values are not allowed."
Does anyone know what is going on, or more importantly, how to fix this?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Daniel Craigie

    Daniel Craigie-
How full is the hard drive that you are trying to save to? Not that it should matter, but have you tried scanning another document?
Is the scanner plugged directly into the Mac? Try it that way.
Disconnect all peripherals except keyboard, monitor, mouse and scanner and see if the problem goes away.
    Luck-
