Weird Erase tool bug in CC?

Several times recently, I've encountered an odd bug in Photoshop CC where the only tool it will let me use is the Eraser. Selecting other tools either with keyboard shortcuts or via toolbars has no effect, even though the relevant icon is highlighted, and the eraser works "completely" (eg, if I try selecting the Move tool and moving a layer with arrow keys, nothing happens.... as you'd expect if you *wanted* to be in eraser mode). The only fix I can find when this happens is to close PS entirely and restart, at which point it works like it should. Anyone else had this happen? It hasn't happened enough yet to discern any pattern, but if I can figure out what combination of actions causes it to happen I'll post back here.
System is a Win7 x64 laptop, 16GB RAM, nVidia Quadro K5010M, Wacom tablet (latest drivers with all) running Photoshop CC 14.1.2 x64.

I don't think it was close, no - but it's only happened a few times. Next time it happens I'll note how the stylus is being used.
We've got another Wacom we could try as well, although I haven't tried yet (I suspect that swapping them round once it's happened won't achieve anything, as nothing I try on the keyboard or mouse has any effect). I don't think it's, for example, a stuck "e" key or other shortcut, because (a) no other programs are affected or start doing weird things (typing loads of e's, for example), (b) selecting other tools *looks* like it has worked normally, as the icon gets highlighted, but the actual tool being used is still the eraser.
I'll try to post a screengrab next time it happens, and work out how to recreate it. Haven't tried reinstalling PS or the Wacom driver yet but that would be the next thing to try.

  • My eraser tool acts weirdly. Everytime i use eraser tip on my pen, I cannot change the size of it with either tablet wheel or brackets. It changes the size of a brush tool instead. This was not happening in CS6.. Any ideas?

So this problem is annoying me. Is there any setting that has been added and this got messed up or is it a bug? In CS6 I could turn around my pen and use the eraser tip and change the size of it.
Now in CC 2014 I can't do it. I have to manually click the Eraser tool, and then change the size. I must say this is annoying as hell.

Reset the tool? What do you mean?
EDIT: Never mind, i found out how to reset. I Ctrl+Right clicked and reseted both brush and eraser but it still doesn't fix the issue. I also downloaded PS CS6 version and it works fine there.. So I don't know what it is. Must be a bug in CC 2014..

  • Found Bug in PS CS6 While Trying to use the Eraser Tool

I was editing an 8 bit JPEG that I imported from Adobe Lightroom 3.  While using the standard eraser tool to erase the background it would stop working and then move the screen around until I released the mouse button.  This happend about every 10 - 20 seconds.  I'm using a Macbook 2,1 with the OSX 10.6.8.
    Recreate Steps:
    1) Import 8-bit JPEG from Lightroom 3
    2) Select eraser tool on main layer (background)
    3) While holding the mouse button down start to erase part of the image
    4) About 10 - 20 seconds in the eraser will stop working and then when you move the mouse around image moves
    5) To stop the movement you have to release the mouse button and the find the correct part of the image again and start erasing again
    6) Most of the time I was viewing the image at >150%
Hope this helps and you can find a fix.  It's very annoying to have to stop and find the correct area of your photo to erase.
    Anyone else having this issue?

I am trying to reproduce this but as of now, mine is working properly.
Can you copy and paste your system information in this thread for me to take a look at? (Photoshop  Help>system info)

  • What happened to my eraser tool? PS CS4

Suddenly the eraser tool doesn't work any more on settings layers. If I want to erase partly a curves layer, nothing happens. If I want to erase a part selection setting layer, the eraser adds instead of erasing. Otherwise it works normally on pixels layers. I restarted the computer but nothing changed. The erase history box is unchecked.
Did I activate some function that I am not aware of? Or is this a bug and should I reinstall?

    >Are you erasing to black, white, transparent?  Depending on what you are erasing it is easy to flip the colours accidentally and it will look like eraser is not working...
That was it! I was erasing to white. Strange that I had never come by this before in 12 years of Photoshop use!
    >When I paint on Layer Masks I usually just reset back- and foreground-color (D) if necessary, use the Brush Tool and switch the two colors (X) as needed.
I will try that technique, it should help fine tuning. Thanks!
Thanks a lot for getting me out of this!

  • Eraser tool is jagged

I am working on smoothing the edges of a graphic.  I know how to pick my eraser tool, the hardness, opacity, etc. So.....
I'm cleaning up this graphic nicely and I save the file.  I open it up later and the edges that I have already smoothed are all jagged now.  Also, as I continue to erase, the tool is still jagged.  It is a brush tool at 100% opacity and hardness, etc.  It is the same tool and setting that was working beautifully before I saved the project.
I have an image of the jagged (pixelated) graphic attached (I hope the jaggedness is visible in pic).... Remember, it wasn't jagged when I was working on it before.
    What do you think happened?
    Thank you!

Ok I haveinvestigated this and the OP is correct and Doug is correct as well…WHAT?
Yes indeed they are both correct.
You can call it a bug and I think you would be correct and you can also say it is not a bug and probably be correct as well.
This is the thing this will occur as the OP describes but it depends on the size of the dash or should i say the expanded object.
Exactly at what size (length) this problem disappears I have not been able to determine but if you made the dash like 8 points you would surely be fine.
Make it less than a point and you definitely have a problem. The eraser tool can only be 1 point minimum and that might be the problem.
Draw ay small shape less than a point in length and use the eraser tool and you will see what I mean.
So this is not dash line specific but a tolerance limit be it expected or by design or a bug is probably how you choose to look at it.
So what does this effect have on the workings or Illustrator to Adobe this was probably acceptable and if no one complains about it or describes it in itss true sense Adobe will either not be able to reproduce it or will they correct it.
I don't see it as a  bug as there are ways to accomplish and effect the same result in Illustrator I see it as a feature request to be able to effect smaller tolerance either with a new tool or with improvements to the current tool(s). In the case of a dash line it might be good o be able have an eraser tool that erased the path as an effect so that the dash did not reflow and the path seemed to be shortened. That would be a very handy tool since you would not need to expand the stroke and would have control over the length and size of the path.
But this type of eraser effect is probably not possible.
So if the Op and Scott see this as a bug I think they should mention the fact that his is a tolerance issue that needs to be addressed and they should come up with a good reason or two why it should be changed.
I am going to get breakfast.

  • CS3 Eraser tool: Did you mean it, Mordy?

In Real World (p. 114), Mordy says that dragging the new, funky Eraser across a portion of a stroked path or a brush stroked path will require the re-application of the stroke (or brush stroke) to the surviving segments.
I infer from this that the Eraser (like some pathfinders and Live Paint) will remove multiple strokes, brush strokes, and maybe other effects from the path.
I draw a few open paths, apply an Effect to one, a second and third stroke to another, a brush to a third. I "cut" across each path with the Eraser tool. My resulting paths are retaining the various stroke effects after they've been chopped up by the Eraser. No need to re-apply.
    What am I missing?

Mordy's text is probably accurate, I wasn't there to be able to judge, a consumer as yourself.
It is just that things were updated after.
it is like an OS being updated and then one of your applications ha a problem with the way it functions, the code is written the application is released according to specs and there is no bug then the OS developer finds it has to revise the OS because it found an overlooked security breach potential. Now everything is correct and according to specs and there is no bug, except there is a bug. You now do not have to correct an error but you have to instead write a new code for that lost feature.
This is hard to understand for a lot of users, they think it is simply a matter of accuracy or poor implementation or laziness etc. but it is just a matter of logistics, the order in which things work out. It i always a give and take situation.
It is not current as opposed to inaccurate.
Of course if Mordy chimes in and says he was in accurate and made a mistake, then in the Holiday Spirit we can let him have it, but good!

  • Weird new graphical bug in ITunes...

    Check this out...
Click here for a more close up view. As you can see, the music listing part of ITunes bleeds over the top menus. Weird.
This bug is occurring regardless of whether the window is maximized or not. And yes, this bug persists after a restart.
Not much more to say - how do I fix this? =p
    PC   Windows XP Pro

    Hi, James.
The first thing that comes to mind is that you have installed a plug-in that is causing this unusual behavior.
If that's the case, have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base and let us know if it solves your problem.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 unusable due to the brushes/eraser tools freezing on a 64 bit Windows 7 PC!

    Help I can't work
I'm using PS CC 2014 on a 64 bit Windows 7 PC. Photoshop is unusable due to the brushes/eraser tools freezing.
Anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it, or how to revert to Photoshop CC using a Creative Cloud subscription?
If this helps, all other cc 2014 programs are running perfectly - as was the previous version of Photoshop.

When exactly does your brushes/eraser tools freeze?
Do you use any Wacom or other brand tablet? If so, have you checked for an updated driver? Disconnect Wacom and use a mouse instead and check.
Disconnect all the external devices and then retry.
Install all the PS updates. Help > Updates
Try resetting the PS CC preferences and check if it's an issue with corrupt preferences : http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776
Try to open PS CC 2014 in Plugin Disabled mode and check the same. For that Press Shift+PS CC 2014 icon and hit Yes.
    Restart your machine and retry.
Let me know how it goes.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 Background Eraser Tool Not Working

I downloaded the CC 2014 update last week for all of my Adobe products. I've had no trouble with them except for the background eraser tool in Photoshop.
I open a photo and try and erase the background (all of the same settings as I used before) and it's really laggy. You can't drag the eraser, only erase in single points. I have found that by using the standard eraser first, then the background eraser, it will work for about 40 minutes, before stopping again. I then have to restart my computer to get it to work again.
As you can imagine, this is really frustrating. I can't figure out why it's doing this, and neither can my company's IT department. It's not maxing out the RAM or peaking the CPU, so they're pretty sure it's an issue with PS.
I have tried uninstalling, running the CC Cleaner tool, and then re-installing, but that hasn't fixed it.
Is anyone else having this problem? How did you fix it?
    Emily

Adobe finally admits that this issue is a known issue. They tried to blame it on an outdated graphics card driver (see above), but mine was current. After I headed off all of their illogical excuses, one by one, they finally sent me an email stating the issue is definitely on their end and they were able to replicate it on their end - contrary to a previous email in which they attempted to shift blame on my end. I have to say Adobe gave all appearances that they are dismissive and in denial about it - until today. Once again, they escalated the issue (Level 2 - whatever that means). I'm not holding my breath. Thoroughly frustrated with how Adobe refused to take ownership of this until I had them corralled. And yes - I did let them know I was not pleased. Very disappointed with Adobe support. I invested a lot of time in previous support sessions, and the issue is still not resolved.

  • Eraser tool in Photoshop CS5 (block mode)

    Hello, experts:
Several months ago, I noticed that, when using the Photoshop CS5 eraser tool in block mode,  it was not working right up to the edges of the tool (the block icon that apperars on screen). In other words, when erasing, I have to guess how near it is safe to move it towards something I need to protect, and this uncertainty can cause errors in my work. Has anyone else had this problem, and is there anything that can be done to cure it?
With thanks in anticipation of  a helpful reply,
    True To Form

The easiest thing to start with is to reset the Eraser Tool.
Right click on the Eraser icon in the tool options bar and then click on Reset Tool.

  • Eraser tool won't reverse when swapping fore and background colors

When using the eraser tool to blend layers I often want to "unerase" a bit so hit "X" to paint with white and it still erases to layer below just as it had before switching the foreground "W" and background "B" colors. Makes no sense to me as I thought I could paint back in by doing so.

"You can reverse transparency by painting white (or a light shade) on a layer mask that has been painted black (or a dark shade)."   Thanks, Noel.
That is what I am attempting, but when I paint with the white on the layer mask it continues to erase rather than reverse transparency. I was able to do this in the past without fail, but not today. My gut feeling is I've done something which has triggered this problem, but have retraced my steps carefully and am still not finding the solution. The History brush idea I will attempt later, but prefer to first figure out why my old tried and true method is failing.

  • Disable tablet pen pressure for eraser tool in PSE 10?

Hi, I recently bought PSE 10.
I have an Intuos 3 Wacom tablet and whenever I switch to the Eraser tool, in the brush preview icon (top left corner) I see this ~ type of a shape with narrow-pointy edges, indicating that the size-pen-pressure feature is on.
This is always true, even when I switch off all the per-pressure options via the Brush tool.
Can anyone hint how to control or at-least disable the pen-pressure feature while in the Eraser tool?
    Thank you.

One way would be to use the Basic Brushes which are not set for any pressure functions by default.
Or if you need a special brush you could save the brush without any pressure settings with the brush tool selected
and those settings should carry over for the eraser tool.
Also, you can set the mode to clear with the brush tool and that will act like the eraser tool set on the brush mode.

  • Eraser tool doesn't work for black layer mask

I am trying to set a black layer mask and use the eraser tool to edit it.  Unfortunately the eraser tool is not responsive.  I'm not knowingly doing anything differently than I've done in the past.  I recently did a round of software updates for CS6.  Wondering if anyone else is experienceing this and if there's a solution?

Check that foreground color in the toolbox is set to black. (opposite from when using the brush tool)
Press D and then the X key.
And that opacity and flow are 100%.
Most people use the brush tool on layer masks and you might find that works better.

  • My eraser tool is not working properly :(

Please excuse my bad English but it its not my firts language.
When editing pictures with photoshop, I normally create a curves layer to adjust color and then use the eraser tool over it to erase some parts of it where I don't want the curves effect to be seen (I don't know if that makes any sense). I mean, instead of using selections to edit different parts of the picture separatedly, I use the eraser tool because I have found it works better for me if I erase the effect of the parts of the picture where I don't want it to be.
The thing is, this morning I was editing and it worked fine, and suddenly the eraser stopped working on the curves layer. IF I create a new layer and draw a black line with my brush and try to erase it, it works. But it won't erase parts of the curves layer.
I have looked in the Internet for solutions and none of them have worked. I made sure the layer was not locked, I checked the opacity, I reset the tool and photoshop  itself, I then reset the whole computer, and I don't know what else to do. I use photoshop CS4 in a PC.
If someone could help me it would be very, very appreciated (:
    Thank you so much!!

Hello, I think you should reset the colors to default using the "D" key.
In fact, you are still editing the mask, but you are applying the colors in reverse than if you were using the brush tool.
Another useful shortcut: X that will switch the foreground and background colors.
