Weird file in my Trash
A weird file (http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/6396/regioncapture2.png) appeared in my Trash one day and I don't seem to able to remove it. I tried rebooting, even reinstalling 10.5.6 combo update twice, but the file is still there. When try and drag it out of the Trash it disappears, but when I put something in the Trash, it back in there. It's obviously some kind of system error as it says it was last modified i 1904... Any ideas?

Can't get rid of the file in the trash
There is a very odd file in my trash and I cannot remove it. I've tried using Secure Empty Trash as well as holding down the Option key and also reformatting my hard drive by doing Erase and Install. Is there anyway i can remove it or does anyone have this weird file in their trash too?

Weird File in trash can--can't delete
I Have this weird file in my trashcan that won't delete. I can drag it out of my trashcan and put it on the desktop and it disappears only to go back into the trashcan a couple days later. I have no idea what is causing this. Any help would be appreciated. Attached is a Picture of my trashcan so you can see what i'm talking about

Weird File in Trash Caused by QuickTime
Hey All,
I have the most peculiar problem. I exported a movie from iMovie '08 through QuickTime. I converted to AVI format. When I opened the file in QuickTime, the program would crash. There was some kind of weird error that caused a file to appear in my Trash Can. The file has characters unlike I have ever seen before. The following is what it appears as.

The slashes are actually the letters NVL in a diagonal. The problem arises in the fact that I cannot delete this file. I have run DiskWarrior and Onyx to try and fix this problem. The file seems non-existent. It is 0 kb, and Mac OS X says that the file was modified Dec. 31, 1903, which is not even a valid date in the OS. Does anyone know what this error is? If not, is there any other way to try and remove the file? The trash always appears full because of the file. I have also recently downloaded MPEG StreamClip, a video conversion and editing program. I was thinking this could be a contributing factor. I'd appreciate any help I can get.Click here and here for information.

It's a series of backslashes made of the word NUL. Preview column indicates that the kind is Alias, size is Zero KB on disk, Last opened only says Fetching.... I click on more info and it disappears.
It only appeared quite recently and only when I move a file to the Trash. I don't remember what happened or what I was doing. I don't have Time Machine turned on because I don't have the spare disk space.
I dragged the file to Terminal and it shows that it's on the .trash of a shared FAT32 drive on my network. I've tried deleting it from that particular folder, but it just reappears.
Can somebody please help me? I'm a bit paranoid about this kind of things, which is why I moved from Windows to Mac.Hi babynajj, and a warm welcome to the forums!

It's from a .Trash File on a Windows volume, and must be repaired with Windows® & chkdsk or whatever.

I have a dilema i use a programme called Mackeeper i accidentally moved several checked files to my trash BUT i didnt delete them,i would like to put the files back where they belong but the put back option is in grey and wont work?? i have spoken to Apple and to no avail !!!
Mackeeper moved my files to my trash so i pulled them out of my trash to my desktop it has copied them to my desktop as well as kept them in my trash!!
im so confused and things are not working properly anymore such as my google chrome for example...all my book marks are gone BUT i can go to the google file which is out of place on my desktop and view all my bookmarks data...ALL of my files still exist but they are just out of place now which is making it hard for certain options on my computer to work...

Remove "MacKeeper" as follows.
"MacKeeper" has only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
Failure to remove MacKeeper will result from neglecting any one of these points:
Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
Don't empty the Trash after dragging the application to it. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
Don't try to drag the MacKeeper icon in the Dock to the Trash.
Here are some general suggestions. If you want your computer to be usable, don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
The only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
Step 2
Restore from the last backup that predates the unwanted changes. -
i am deleting files through my trash in my macbook pro (2010) and then emptying the trash can, but my hard disk space is not increasing! i recently upgraded to lion and the problem is new, wasn't the same with snow leopard! HELP!!!!!
When i press command+I (Get Info) i see that there is 140 GB "Available Space" on my hard disk but when i click on my hard disk icon on the desktop, and then press "space" i only see 102 GB free!! What the f*???

I've got one or maybe two problems. Time Machine routinely crashes and there is a file in the TM folder that is an .InProgress file at the end of successful backups. Can't delete it, even using various sudo commands in Terminal. These come back with a "Resource busy" message.
Similarly, there is a Microsoft Office alias in my trash that will not delete, again including various delete or Terminal commands. Also "Resource busy"
I can't reformat the TM volume since it cannot unmount and it also cannot unmount the whole disk, which contains some other backup files I'd rather keep.
Any suggestions?
MikeI'm not sure I can be very helpful since I was doing a lot of things and ultimately the problems went away. But one thing that definitely seemed to help was to shut down, restart, do something, shut down again and repeat. So with a clean start, try to move the file to the trash. If that works, shut down restart and look to see if it is still in the trash. Empty the trash. Shut down if it appears to empty and then restart. It seemed sometimes that the computer was doing what I wanted then something was overriding this and restoring. The shutdowns immedately after I could do something but before it engaged an override operation seemed to keep this from happening.

I have a Macbook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.2. I have sent a work file to the trash bin along with many other files. When I empty the trash this one particular file remains and I get a message that this file is still in use. I have tried returning the file to my documents, opening it, closing it and then sending it to trash and again I try to empty trash but the same message comes up - Q - How can I trash this file permanently?
First just try logging out and back in. Whatever is holding on to it may not be running after the logout thus freeing it so you can trash it after logging back in.

Both versions seem to actually BE there when I check the info. I emptied the trash and lost them even though they still LOOKED like they were in iTunes. I used a third party programme called Mackeeper UGHHH SOOO Stupid i know,it moved loads of files to the trash now i do not know where they originally came from or belong!! the put back option is in grey??and will not work even when i highlight one by one!!

i have been researching and racking my brain on how to put these folders and contents of them back to where they once were all of the contents of the folder are still in tact AND i have not emptied my trash,my programmes and some of my apps are not working properly now...i use my computer alot for making music and things are jumbled up now...

I have dragged 2 files to the trash bin but I cannot delete them from the trash bin. It keeps telling me these files are in use when they are not. How do I delete these files? One is a txt file and the other is an xls file

How do you move a file to the trash with ONE keystroke (Can't believe I'm wasting time on this!)
Everytime I want to send a file to the trash, I have to either perform some kind of key combination/shortcut or use the trackpad/mouse, right click and select "move to trash", or drag the file(s) to the trash! This is absolutely ridiculous. Why can't I just press the delete button??? I cannot take it anymore! It's such a waste of time.

Now the problem is how do you do this?
1. I went to the system prefs > Keyboard > Keyboard and checked "use F1, F2, etc... as standard function keys.."
2. Under keyboard shortcuts, I selected "Application Shortcuts" and clicked on the "+" sign
3. I selected the finder application, entered "Move To Trash" in the action box, and F12 as the key (because it's next to "delete")
That did not work. It just opened the dashboard instead.
4. I went back to "keyboard shortcuts" and found F12 was already assigned to open the dashboard. So I unchecked it and tried again.
That still didn't work. I would select the file to be moved to trash, press F12, and after an error "beep" sound, the last file in the folder was highlighted.Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU DID IT! I cannot believe it!
I changed "Move To Trash" to "Move to Trash" and selected a file. I had lost all hope, so I took a minute to prepare myself for yet another moment of deep frustration. Then I pressed F10, and bang! the file was trashed!!! It took me a couple minutes to actually believe what just happened. Thank you so much! If I could, I would "like" you as many times as I can physically hit the "Liked" button!
PS: what the heck is wrong with Apple though??? Wrong instructions, incorrect help instructions on their own site. The chances of figuring this out before having a nervous breakdown were like one in a million (approximately, I did not actually do the math). Last week, the keyboard and the trackpad stopped responding on my brand new macbook pro for a couple hours. I was not the only one with this problem. Apparently, this was from a design flaw, which means it could happen again at any time. iMovie doesn't work. TextEdit keeps crashing all the time. Emptying the trash can take hours.
Since 2000, I bought a PMac G4 Quicksilver, a used PMac G3 Blue, a used iBook G4, a used Pismo PBook G3, a used Graphite iMac G4, a used iMac G3 (green, 233MHz I think) and I already had more problems with this brand new macbook pro than will all the other macs combined... For such an expensive machine, with 16GB of RAM, that's a little dissapointing, especially from Apple. Maybe I'm just not lucky.

How can I login and retrieve my user file from the trash?
I was trying to find out where all my HD had gone, which a did using ‘What Size’.
I found what looked like an old backup file so I put the file in the trash.
It turns out that the file was my user file. So now I can’t login to as the user.
