Weird Firewire issues: spontaneous disconnecting of drives

I have bought two 1TB harddisks recently and have been struggling with the connections to my 1st gen Intel iMac core duo.
If I connect the drives each to a different firewire port, everything works fine
If I connect the drives to a "loop through" firewire port on another harddisk, that's fine
Whenever I connect a device to the loop-through firewire on the 1TB, Finder starts to show the spinning ball of death and eventually the system states that the 1TB harddisk is removed improperly.
I have 4 firewire harddisks connected to my iMac, the 1TB harddisks are the last in each chain:
iMac -> Lacie -> 1TB freecom
iMac -> iomega -> 1TB freecom
this setup works fine, but whenever I connect a device on the freecoms I get the problems. I tried switching the ports, same effect. Putting the freecoms first in a chain doesn't work.
Sounds to me that the freecoms have a problem or could it be Mac related? (I'm going to ask freecom support as well)

Since it works when the freecom drive is not first, I would suspect a problem with the freecom drive's daisy chain port.

  • Weird Firewire Issue since 10.5.6 update

    Hey guys!
I'm a musician so I use an audio interface (Presonus FP10) to record my stuff. It's a firewire interface and it used to work perfectly fine.
However, since the 10.5.6 update there seems to be something wrong with my firewire port and I haven't found anything on the web that fits my problem.
If I plug in my interface into the firewire port, it doesn't work. It neither goes on nor is recognized by the OS.
Although, once I plug in my ethernet cable for internet access, it works fine.
Problem with this is that in my music room there is no possibiliy of pluging an ethernet cable.
I hope somebody can tell me what to do in order to get this fixed, whether this problem is caused by Leopard or by my interface.
    Thanks,
    Mark

That was my first guess, too. See, that's what makes it all so weird:
I have the device plugged in with no other cable. Nothing happens. I have the ethernet cable plugged in without anything connected to that. Nothing happens. I then plug it into an internet router ét voilá! It works...Could it maybe be a lack of electricity coming from a damaged AC-Unit connected to the device?
But then again, it all worked fine up to the 10.5.6 update. Did the apple people do something to the firewire driver?I hear the new Macbooks come without Firewire...

  • Firewire shared drives spontaneously disconnects - Please help!

Very odd problem that for whatever reason just started happening. I have 15 external FireWire 800 drives that half are shared on the network using AFP, the others are backup drives that run on Retrospect for the shared drives. This setup has run without any problems for a few years, then recently I'm having issues that all the drives (or a random few) will spontaneously disconnect, and will display an error on the server screen saying something to the effect that devices were ejected improperly, etc....
I'll look on the server Finder and some of the drives are gone. The only way to get them back is to power them off, and turn them back on. Sometimes AFP won't reshare the drives that were kicked off, and I'll have to restart AFP to share the drives again.
What is going on? I haven't done any updates, I'm running Server 10.5.8. Is it possible one of the drives may have a corrupted file on it that's causing some or all the drives to get kicked off? This is really frustrating as I'm having users knocked off the shared drives while working.
Any fix would be appreciated. Thanks.

Shut Down, unplug the AC cord from the Mac, and leave it unplugged for at least 15 minutes. Also power down the camcorder and unplug it from the G5.
Then plug the AC cord back in, boot the G5. Then plug the camcorder in and power it up.
Does System Profiler recognize the camcorder now?

  • Firewire Issues: External Hard Drives & DV  Deck Sony DSR 11 not recognized

So, I have this brand new $6000 Mac Pro that will not recognize a simple DV deck, nor the external HD's.
Thus, after spending seven hours searchig around last night, trying every configuration possible from updates, unplug power source, and everything else, I began making calls as of 4 am this morning.
I was referred to FCP Europe where I was informed that I needed FCS friver updates. (unavailable for 1.0.1) or perhaps it was a Sony issue. The deck & drives work fine with my G4 & Powerbook G4. With six fire wire ports on the Mac Pro, and nothing being recognized via a single fire wire port, does anyone have a simple, expedient solution? Thank you.

Ahhhh. Firewire issues. I'm convinced that these Macpros have some serious problems here. I am running a sony dsr11 also with a digi002. MY issues is bootup. . I have a mac pro with Tiger installed. My issue is I intermittently get a prohibitted error on bootup. The error looks like a no smoking sign without the cigerett. I have to re boot and sometimes the os boots right up othertimes not. I have sfound that I have to boot my sytem with noting hooked up first. It seems when you have high end firewire devices that the Bus just can't handle it. Real ****** for thos who bought the system for A/V work. Everything woks fine on my powerbook and my G5. Problem is with MACPRO! Do you also have other firewire devices hooked up? Are they daisychained together?

  • Firewire Issues Caused By Apple Isight!

For months, I've been having an intermittent Firewire audio problem, which I initially thought was A) Quad G5 or B) RME Fireface 800!
Testing the RME on another Quad G5 resulted in no errors, though for piece of mind a replacement RME was given! Back home the same intermittent problems occurred, it had to be the Quad G5???
Livid, this time I persisted on Google searching for FW issues, (a few hours later) to my amazement I came across an article on MacFixIt, that pointed the finger to Apple's own iSight FW camera, which I had connected!
The transcript below explains how to resolve this problem, it worked for me!
Mini-Tutorial: Dealing with FireWire problems (drives not mounting, devices unrecognized, etc.)
As an Apple-invented technology, FireWire (IEEE 1394a and IEEE 1394b) should be (and usually is) one of the most solid and efficient means for interfacing with external peripherals. Indeed Apple's "i"-branded devices -- the iPod and iSight -- have, in large part, been made possible by the quick transfer rates, power sourcing, and hot pluggability offered by FireWire.
Occasionally, however, conflicts between FireWire-connected devices arise and can result in a variety of issues including DV cameras dropping frames, FireWire drives not mounting, and erratic behavior from the iPod (disappearing from iTunes, etc.). In the midst of these issues, you might also experience "buffer underrun" errors when trying to burn CDs or DVDs with FireWire-connected recorders.
The iSight is especially notorious for causing issues of this nature, and exhibiting symptoms.
There exist a number of methods for dealing with FireWire device interference, a few of which are explored here.
Switching Ports The first procedure you should try when experiencing a problem that you believe to be caused by device interference is to simply reconfigure the arrangement in which your FireWire peripherals are connected.
Try switching each device to a different port, or temporarily disconnecting one or more of the devices. In particular, if you are a PowerMac G5 owner, trying switching devices from the front to back ports or vice versa.
Adding an external hub In some cases, it appears that FireWire devices are not drawing enough power from the computer. This can cause a sundry of strange issues, including apparent conflicts between devices and unexpected power-offs during device operation. In these instances, adding an externally powered FireWire hub can clear things up.
One of the reasons an "under-powered" situation can occur is that different Mac models have varying power capacities available through their FireWire ports.
PowerBooks and iBooks have the least, generating around 7 watts. The iMac G5 also generates a relatively low amount of FireWire power, sharing 8 watts between its two FireWire 400 ports.
The Power Mac G5 shares 15 watts between its one FireWire 800 port and two FireWire 400 ports.
Place devices on different FireWire busses/Isolate the iSight Similar to the above procedure, adding another FireWire bridge -- via an extra PCI-based FireWire adapter or another means -- can eliminate conflicts from devices that reside on the same bridge.
Power cycling the system Simply cycling the power on your system may be enough to temporarily eliminate a few FireWire conflict issues.
Shut down your Mac, and disconnect all FireWire devices as well as the computer's power cord. Leave the system off for about 10 minutes, then plug it back in. First turn your Mac back on, then re-attach the FireWire devices one at a time and check for the conflict to resurface.
Disconnect the iSight As noted above, the most common cause of interference is Apple's own iSight. In case after case, simply disconnecting this single device has eliminated problems with other FireWire devices.
Disconnecting the iSight has proved particularly successful for an issue where the iPod disappears from the Desktop and from the iTunes playlist, while the iPod status screen cycles from the Apple logo to a "Do not Disconnect" message over and over.
The exact reasons why the iSight causes more than its fair share conflicts with other FireWire devices are many, and sometimes unclear. One potential source of conflict, however, could be the unit's high bandwidth usage.
The iSight captures video at a 640 x 480 pixel resolution, at 30 frames per second in millions of colors. Such throughput uses a significant chunk of the standard FireWire port's 400 Mbps bandwidth. As such, when other devices are connected, the bandwidth requirements for satisfactory performance may not be met.
Apply the latest updates Make sure that your FireWire drives are using the latest firmware (check the manufacturers' Web site) and the most recent iPod update has also been applied.
Of higher importance, if you have an iSight, is the iSight 1.0.2 updater. In a large number of cases it has resolved conflicts caused by the camera.
Re-apply the most recent Mac OS X combo updater In some cases, re-applying the most recent combo updater can resurrect seemingly defunct FireWire ports and allow devices -- drives included -- to be recognized again.
The most recent combo updater is available from Apple's download page.
Clear caches Try using a tool like Tiger Cache Cleaner or Cocktail to remove potentially corrupt system caches. Restart, then check if your FireWire devices are recognized.
Ps. There was no iSight connected when testing the RME on another Quad!
Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   2x 2.5 GB HD, 2.5 GB RAM, iSight, iPod, RME Fireface 800 Audio Interface

  • Issues with External Hard Drives

I hope this is the right forum for this one - please give me a steer if not! I've also posted it in 'Dock and Finder', but this forum seems equally appropriate, if not more so.
I'm getting repeated issues with External Hard Drives, including ones that I have been using successfully for months/years, suddenly failing to mount and then becoming 'unknown device' through the firewire branch of 'About This Mac'.
I've just bought a new hard drive on the grounds that the others had somehow failed, and the same problems are emerging. I decided to Repair Permissions on my iMac's internal drive, and am copying the results below, from repair runs conducted yesterday and today:

    Permissions repair complete
    My concerns are:
    * Some of the permissions repaired yesterday appear to have needed to be repaired again today
    * There are several files which carry a warning that they won't be repaired as they have been 'modified', and some of these clearly relate to disk management.
Does anyone have any ideas what is going on???
    Thanks!!

Many problems with the 10.5.7 update have been fixed by a Restart.
If that doesn't help, something may have gone wrong with the update. Download and install the "combo" update, from: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_7_ComboUpdate
If that doesn't help, try running the Apple Hardware Test, on the disc that came with your computer.
    1. Disconnect all external devices (including the Ethernet cable) except the keyboard and mouse.
    2. Insert the "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disc that came with your computer.
    3. Restart while holding down the "C" key. When the list of available startup volumes appears, click Apple Hardware Test and the right arrow.
    4. When the Apple Hardware Test main screen comes up (after a moment), follow the on screen instructions.
    5. If it detects a problem, an error code will be displayed. Make a note of it.

  • Weird problem involving my external hard drive - help please!

I recently got a formac mini 120 gb firewire hard drive, which had been working fine with my g4 quicksliver.
i then went to a friends (g5 machine) with my drive and he put some data on it - bought it back to mine and managed to re connect the drive and take the data - no problem - very happy.
I recently gave my drive to another friend using a g5 and when it came back, nothing - i don't get the drive symbol appearing. turned the comp on and off many times and tried re-connecting etc still no drive appearing.
Then i took the drive to my friend with a mac lap top power book. connected there - working fine. Baffling. was happy that my data can still be accessed.
I know it's not the firewire cable because i can get power to the drive - i can see the red light at the fron on.
Can anyone help with this weird problem?
    Thanks

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours might be the 10.4.10 Combo update. I have no idea since you did not fill out your specs. fully when you signed in to this site. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system. This link is for PPC Macs not Intel Macs.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
    Good Luck!

Why does MacOS go backwards... gets worse over time?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work! I have had no trouble with any update Apple puts out (the Combo update is what I normally choose). Are you running 9.2 like your specs. say? You are in the Tiger forum, so I'll assume you haven't updated your Macs specs.

Its a temporary fix and is still looking for the HP driver when i boot up. It also will not save in any print or postscript format. Does anyone know how to fix?
Currently use a Mac with the latest Mavericks 10.9.4

Oh boy! Acting kind of weird seems to be an understatement, aquaequus!
What type of troubleshooting were we able to do with you? I want to make sure that we can get some sort of resolution for this problem.
It is quite possible the battery door may get your phone in working order again. I'm not sure if the store has it in stock, but it is available in our warehouse for $14.99 which can be ordered via customer service.

  • Weird Playback Issue...

I have this weird playback issue with iTunes for Windows. I am using Vista and I think the cause of the problem is that I am using MacDrive to access my OS X partition. But anyways, on with the problem. So the problem is that when I play a song, the song will play for like 5 seconds and then it will just go the next song. This song will do the same thing, and so-on and so-forth. Then, during this time, my Mac formatted hard drive is unavailable while iTunes is running. In "My Computer" the drive is there, but when I try to open it, Explorer freezes. Then, when I exit iTunes, it doesn't really exit. It still shows up in the task manager and when I try to end the process, it just plain doesn't end. I have to restart my computer to gain full use of it again. After the restart I can access my Mac disks, but once I start iTunes and try to play a song, I get the same thing again. And in case thats not weird enough, I can play the MP3's in WMP fine, and they will also play in iTunes fine if I actually open them, rather than just select them from my library. If I go to file open and select a song on my Mac drive, it will play fine, but then once I try to play a song from my library, I get caught in that vicious cycle. Anyone else had this problem or anything? Thanks. Also, is there an alternative program to Mac Drive that will allow me to read HFS partitions?

Post more about your situation... what format is the video, and where are you storing the video files? i.e., on a disk other than your startup disk? The adobe install is likely not the problem... I run adobe software along side FCS on about 75 workstations, and don't see issues like you describe.
Wavy? not accurate? what are you talking about?

5th generation ipod not detected by my windows xp.  works fine on other pc.  performed necessary steps to remove and reinstall itunes but having same issue. is there a driver i can download to pc then direct to that specific location when installing?

I have a similar issue - my iPod nano connects and is visible in Device Manager yet invisible in My Computer and iTunes. I've tried everything I can possibly think of to try and solve this myself, all in vain.
Mine is a nano 4G. I've been using it for quite some time without the slightest problem. I have been using WINAMP instead of iTunes to manage my darling nano.
Then, one fine day I bought a new computer and the nano would not show up in My Computer, though the nano display shows "Do not disconnect". On my old computer it worked (and still works) absolutely fine with win XP as well as with win7 (the later I currently use on my new/problematic computer, which I bought last summer and that's how long I've had this problem).
Of course, after several first attempts I gave up and installed iTunes. I've tried using the Apple support article "iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows":
    - reset
    - fully charged,
    - cable works fine on two other computers
    - in normal or disk mode makes no difference
    - tried to find anything useful in the diagnostics mode
    - reinstalled iTunes several different times since then to the latest version
    - I've unplugged every other USB device except for my mouse and keyboard and tried several different USB ports on my motherboard (USB 3.0 and conventional), as well as trying different USB- related options in my BIOS.
    - I've never used any Mac with this ipod
    - I've tried fiddling with the win7 Services by stopping and restarting them and of course
    - uninstalling the iPod drivers in Device Manager. After such an uninstall the ipod would automatically be recognised and "ready for use", i.e. being invisible in My Computer.
    - Attempted to find any possible third-party conflict with msconfig or the possibility that my ipod is being confused for a network drive (for which I've disconnected my HDD, leaving only my SSD with the OS).
Sometimes, iTunes would note that iPod service (or something, can't remember exactly) failed to install properly and asked to try and repair it. I would click YES! and voila - no change! The ipod would rarely show up in iTunes on my problematic computer like this:
iTunes would warn me that the nano would need restoring so I would try and do it on my haunted machine upon which iTunes would freeze like you seen in the picture.
Despite this, I've updated and restored the nano on my father's computer to the latest version without any problems. This though, did not solve my problem in any way.
I can load music to my nano through my old computer (which for me is a real pain and hassle) and the gadget works normally in terms of its disconnected functionality.
I've taken my nano to the local service for repair and they said it was fine. Mercifully, they didn't charge for the diagnostics service (gee, thanks for not ripping me off!).
Here are two screengrabs from my Device Manager
and Devices and Printers screens on my comp:
That is my sad story as far as I can remember. It's most likely something with the drivers or something along those lines though I'm out of ideas at this point.
If you think you have any idea PLEASR HELP, I'M DESPERATE!

  • Firewire issues after upgrading to 10.6

I mentioned this is a prior post, and have really still not got a resolution to it. I have a 1st. gen Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 dual core. I have encountered several disturbing issues using Firewire 400/800 devices on my machine after the upgrade. When I boot into 10.5, I have all the access and performance of my Firewire devices (a LaCie 1 TB external drive, A Sony CD/DVD burner, and a WD Passport FW 800/USB) All devices work in both USB and Firewire natively... but only work properly under 10.6 when using USB. All firewire access on my machine is sketchy at best under 10.6. The devices show up.. and mount.. but when I attempt to use/I.O to them.. the speed moves in bursts.
For example.. copying a folder that is 5GB to one of the FW 800 HDs takes about 2-4 minutes on 10.5... and under 10.6 it bursts. When under 10.6, I get fast transfers for about 200-300 mb, then about a 5-10 minute pause.... then another burst of normal performance for 200 Mb. Then another pause. Taking an estimated 3-4 hours to copy a 5GB folder.
In a test... I switched to the USB interfaces of these devices, and the transfers are fast as expected. (2-4 minutes, no pauses) Furthering the test.. the FW interfaces perform as expected under 10.5.
Anyone else experiencing this? (I have tried resetting PRAM, and total shutdown etc.)
Any assistance would be most welcome.
    Thanks!

I have had Firewire problems since moving to 10.6. Some optical drives in an enclosure containing the Oxford 934 chip will not mount disks unless I pull the Firewire cable and reinsert it. They work fine using USB 2.0. The problem is a result of Apple's update of the Firewire drivers. The problem extension is
    IOFirewireSerialBusPRotocolTransport.kext
Replacing this extension with the one from 10.5 causes everything to work properly. If you do choose to replace this extension, you may wish to replace all five with those from 10.5. Additionally, after making the exchange, repair permissions and restart so as to make sure the replacement extensions are properly recognized. You must repair permissions BEFORE restarting. If you restart and then repair permissions, the replacement extensions may not get recognized, even after a subsequent restart, and you will have to repeat the procedure.
During permission repair, I received alerts that one or more of these extensions could not be used. I ignored the alert with apparently no adverse consequences.
My Firewire only hard drives, and one Firewire/USB 2.0 hard drive seem to have no problem.

  • Firewire vs. ethernet external hard drives

What is better in terms of external hard drive connections? I have a home/office Verizon wireless network, MacBook Pro and G5s using Airport, with all peripherals connected via Ethernet to the router and want to add a hard drive. I am not sure if I should just connect a firewire hard drive to one desktop workstation? I also want to be able to be able to set up Time Machine, hopefully for my 3 workstations when I go to Leopard.
Also, any suggestions as to the best hard drive brand and models?

    Thanks so much.
Do you know what the issues are with network drives and Time Machine. Is it with the devices or with the actual software? If its the hardware are there types that work best?
I am trying to figure out how to set up my backup and storage situation on my network. I like your suggestion of using a Firewire drive cabled to my main Power G5 workstation and using file sharing for the other Macs. I have a wireless MacBook Pro and a G4 and another G3 connected to my Verizon router via Ethernet. So using your suggested setup, I should be able to have all computers access the LaCie drive connected to the G5. But I would like to use Time Machine for the laptop and the G5 since this is where most of my work is done.
What would you suggest? What I would like to end up with is one fast as possible drive for my music, video and pics that I can play and work off of. But I was also looking for some way to have some duplication and automation using TM that could also backup the ongoing graphic work in the office. I was thinking of connecting a Time Capsule or another brand of Ethernet connected drive to my network via a Ethernet switch I have dedicated for 2 network printers. I could keep the Firewire drive on my G5 or maybe connected it to the Ethernet connected drive and have TM backup everything. Am I overcomplicating this?

Are you using NTFS driver in Mac OS X to WRITE to your MyBook?
If so, switch to Paragon Software's. Demo is fine.
MyBooks are often trouble, though usually under OS X.
