Weird folders in ~/library preferences  eg ˘ùñÁ∆Ùøˇ' ñÙxÄñÁ-

Hey, I've been using someone else mac imac 8,1 osx 10.5.4 and finding it buggy i've reinstalled some software, deleting an on plist in the process. When i wentinto ~/library/preferences i noticed a bunch of weird empty folders (about 35) with strange names eg.'¡PñÁ∆Ùøˇ‘ ñÙxÄñÁ…, or )—†gXøˇœ∞迃. when I drag these into terminal and do a ls -l@ it says no such file or directory. I have never seen anything like this - apparently windows has never run on this machine. Any ideas?
Also permissions for all folders at ~ level read drwx------+ - is the + normal for these folders?

some buggy 3rd party software is known to do that. I've heard some Epson printer drivers can do this and some Adobe apps. harmless but annoying. you can safely trash those folders but they may come back.

yes, that's quite normal. it means ACLs are present. there are "everyone deny delete" ACLs on all those folders. you can list them usong -e switch for ls.

adding backing vocals is a feature, I can't find them or how to do it.
The backing vocals are software instruments, listed in the "Choir" section of the software instrument browser. Afaik, the basic GarageBand does not have these instruments. My "choirs" all came with the JamPacks. The JamPacks are no longer sold separately, but if you buy Mainstage 2, you will get all Jam pack instruments and loops to be used with GararageBand; and it is not very expensive (~23 € at the AppStore).

  • Weird folders in preferences

I had to uninstall a few preferences and noticed a 100s of very strangely labeled folders, all of which contained 0kb of information. What could be causing this? I had recently got a 27" iMac i5 that I installed all my data from a Time Machine back-up from my old computer, so I'm not sure how long theses could be there, or if they were on the old computer (since re-formatted).

    example folder names in Preferences:

    ˝¥‡ê÷òøˇ›‡†~a|êÿÃè¿ö(øˇfi@ß≠`§
    ›∂ê}]Løˇ€††{·|ê}_|è¿ú
There are literally hundreds of these and some start with a bunch of spaces so it looks like the folder has no name when auto condensed.
    Any info would be great.

Adobe or Epson TWAIN. It seems to be when you use any Adobe software (Photoshop etc). According to http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4386699 they are harmless & can be deleted once you've quit the Adobe software.

  • Strange folders in my Preferences

    Hi All,
Since I got this iMac a few weeks ago I've been seeing several wierdly named folders appearing in my Users/Library/Preferences folder. It seems like the number of them grows each time I use the Mac. When I click on them nothing happens, that is they either don't open or there is nothing in them. I've checked in the Library/Preferences and System/Library/Preferences folders and there are none of these in either of them. Here are a few examples of the names:
    {’ê◊8øˇ‘ê†~
    {fi0ê◊8øˇ‘ê†~
    |0ê◊8øˇ‘ê†~
Does anyone know what these are?
    Thanks.

  • Weird image in System preferences

    Hi,
I have a weird image in the System Preferences. It is actually an image of a switch on top of the Startup Disk icon. How do I remove the weird image? I have tried to restart my Mac and update the software but that does not help. Please help.

I have had this pop up from time to time. It turns out to be a corrupted sys pref or cache file.
It is easy enough to fix. Close your system preferences and delete these two files -
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
This cleared it up for me and should do the same for you.

  • Strange, unreadable columns in username/library/preferences folder....?

Hi, I recently was asked to go into this folder, my username/library/preferences, and found a myriad of empty folders with nothing in them. The font beside each folder was completely foreign looking, with symbols unrecognizable....
is my computer corrupted by something?
what should i do? remove them all? or do they have some relation to files, programs....etc..

    Hi.
I think I know what it is, and it's probably harmless.
    Check this out.

  • Search doesn't search ~/Library/Preferences and others

Since upgrading to 10.5 I've noticed that Spotlight (as well as doing a normal finder search) doesn't search the ~/Library/Preferences folder (or a lot of other folders as well including Application Support).
For example try to search for com.apple.itunes and nothing will come up.
BUT if you navigate to the Preferences folder and search for com.apple.itunes ONLY in the Preferences folder it will show up.
This kind of ruins the search for me, and forces me to use lame 3rd party search apps.
Does anyone know a way to make Spotlight and the regular finder search, actually search the entire system?
    Thanks

Spotlight's settings are in system preferences, you can click them all, no big difference. Spotlight has many limitations, and is not the application it's made out to be. It will find many items, and also skip many. That's it, not so great of news. The index includes all folders, yet some will not display.

  • After Effects warning: Could not create the file '/Users/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/13.0/dummy

I have just downloaded the trial After Effects CC. I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4 on my Macbook Pro.
When I try to launch After Effects, this message appears:
"After Effects warning: Could not create the file '/Users/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/13.0/dummy'"
I have followed the advice from other posts on this issue regarding resetting all of the permissions in the Adobe folder in my library to read and write , but it doesn't change anything. I still get the same message when I try to launch the program. Moreover, there is no After Effects folder in my Adobe folder, even though it's clearly in my Applications folder.
I also uninstalled After Effects and tried to reinstall it, but to no avail.
I sure would like to give it a try, as I was planning on purchasing it, but this is just one more issue in a long irritating line of issues that have arisen since trying to download it from CC.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I am having this problem and this response does not make sense. I made the "Preferences" ,"Adobe" & "After Effects" folder along with the 10.0,11.0,13.0,13.2 folders all read/write. Can't seem to find an answer.

  • Weird behaviour in Finder Preferences

I have just set up my brand new 27"iMac and i was in Finder Preferences setting up the items I wanted in the Sidebar.
I clicked on the various items I wanted in the Sidbar Preferences list but after clicking and ticking them I noticed that  the ticks then disappeared. Relaunching Finder did show the desired items were now in the sidebar so my choices were picked up. However I examined the Sidebar preferences again and found no items were ticked. Clicking on an item which was in the Sidebar again briefly showed a tick which disappeared and then on relaunching Finder that item had been removed as desired.
Obviously my choices are being dealt with correctly but the Sidebar Preference list shows nothing ticked.
    I find this very weird.
Has anyone any explanations or is this "normal" Mavericks behaviour?

Finder preferences can become corrupted. It's not an unusual.
    Try this..
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash
Then go to Finder > Preferences > Sidebar and try again.

  • Delete /Library/Preferences ?

One of my users has a couple of odd things going on.  One is applications complaining about weird keychains.  Adobe Reader was beefing about something like ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Acrobat/11.0/Security/somethingorother  On that same machine, I saw something unhappy about BuddySomethingOrOther keychain.  The other issue is login attempts that sit there with a spinning beach ball until the system is rebooted.
My initial thought was, "Delete all system preferences!"  But I couldn't find any mentions of doing that via Google, so I figured I'd check first :-)

    Ah. Your initial post noted:
    ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Acrobat/
Since the tilde means the user account, I the presumed you meant any preferences related to that folder, not the root Library.
For the main /Library/Preferences folder, I wouldn't touch until I knew I had a way to easily fix it in case the Mac wouldn't boot to that partition after clearing it. It's easy enough. Just have any other partition with a bootable installation of OS X on it that has been tested to be sure you can indeed startup to it.
Then as before, move all preference files in the /Library/Preferences/ folder to a new folder. In this case, better to move them (or copy then delete the originals) to the other bootable drive so permission issues don't prevent you from getting at them when starting up to the other partition. Restart. Since they are preferences, and not critical system files, the Mac shouldn't have any trouble restarting. It should rebuild anything that's missing at default settings.
However, that's what the other bootable drive is for. It the Mac does balk at the removal of these preference files, then you restart and boot to the other partition. From there, copy the original preference files back into the /Library/Preferences/ folder of the drive you're testing.

  • Error (-48) When Backing up /Users/~/Library/Preferences

I recently just tried to do a fresh from scratch Time Machine backup of one of my computers on a new hard drive I bought. However, I noticed that Time Machine would repeated stall out at around 12GB backed up and have to restart the backup from scratch.
From analyzing the console messages and logs, I noticed that Time Machine was having trouble backing up my /Users/~/Library/Preferences ("~" being a placeholder for the name of the account) folder. Specifically, any preference files or directories that were stored there that were not with the .plist extension generated Error (-48) messages in the console. Following those messages the backupd service (i.e., Time Machine) would SegFault and then crash (Console output is below).
The backup completes fine on its own if I exclude the Preferences folders for my user account. However, if I try to include it I get the same old results. Obviously, I have a lot of preference files (like MS Office) that I would like to back up so I am trying to find out (1) what a Error -48 actually menas and (2) what the problem with these preference files is and (3) is there anyway to get Time Machine to not freak out when it tries to copy them over.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Main HD libray/system folders & User library/system folders

I think this is quite an advanced question, so I hope I can get some serious help on this:
Since I am the only User on my lappy I've come to conclusion that the often mirrored HD/User libs are a waste of disc space. Can anyone recommend a good way, or software application (if any,) to create a main libs set where most of the folders are, albeit either on HD/ or /User/...?

Though the folders and even some of the files may have the same name, quite frequently the contents of those files are quite different and the applications that reference them expect to find both versions...
    As an example, looking at
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie.plist
    and
    /Users/~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie.plist
The first file has one entry: the default location for themes.
The second has 46 group entries (with several subentries) and has all the user specific preferences.
Trying to combine them would require doing it on a file by file basis-adding the settings exclusive in one to the other-and hoping nothing gets screwed in the process.

  • Mail wont launch at all. Deleted this: ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

Mail wouldnt let me send outgoing mail claiming there to be an error whilst there was an outgoing connection. So I thought to completely reset the entire app and found a forum that told me to delete something >_> And so I deleted this ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and now nothing will launch. And well. Nothing is backed up. Im an idiot. ;___; I just want to go back to my chalk and slate. TECHNOLOGY HATES ME. Please help me.

    Hi Bill,
You could also try com.apple.helpviewer.plist (in ~/Library/Preferences). Have you noted whether this is system-wide or restricted to your user account? I'd create a test account (if you don't have another on your system) and try the help menus. If they're messed up over there, then fixing things in your user folder won't help. The only system resource I could find that seems remotely relevant is /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.helpdata.plist, but I'd be verrrry careful about messing around with stuff in your System folder.
    Hope that helps!
