Weird folders in preferences

I had to uninstall a few preferences and noticed a 100s of very strangely labeled folders, all of which contained 0kb of information. What could be causing this? I had recently got a 27" iMac i5 that I installed all my data from a Time Machine back-up from my old computer, so I'm not sure how long theses could be there, or if they were on the old computer (since re-formatted).

There are literally hundreds of these and some start with a bunch of spaces so it looks like the folder has no name when auto condensed.

I have never seen anything like this - apparently windows has never run on this machine. Any ideas?
Also permissions for all folders at ~ level read drwx------+ - is the + normal for these folders?

some buggy 3rd party software is known to do that. I've heard some Epson printer drivers can do this and some Adobe apps. harmless but annoying. you can safely trash those folders but they may come back.

yes, that's quite normal. it means ACLs are present. there are "everyone deny delete" ACLs on all those folders. you can list them usong -e switch for ls.

Strange Folders In Preferences

I have two users with strange folders inside ~Library/Preferences
In this location there are dozens of zero KB folders with random garbled names, such as these 4 examples contained in quotes:
"˙jt"
"˙ù†"
"˙ùÃ"
"˛
Note, there is a return in the last one.
Does anyone have any idea what these are?

That was a smokin' link Niel! Good find.
They are both Photoshop CS2 users. One user does likely have TWAIN drivers installed because he has at least a couple of scanners. The other user I don't think has a scanner. But I could be wrong about that.

Weird Zero KB preferences with random extensions -- am I alone?

Hi Forum,
I have posted on this issue previously, hoping that 10.6.3 would fix the problem but it seems to remain.
I have hundreds of Zero KB preference files that look like the below:
com.apple.(program).plist.Zvi584a =====> ZERO KB
or other random extension. It seems iTunes is a huge culprit as is Quicktime X in ~/Library/Preferences
Basically every time you open iTunes or Quicktime X and close it a new Zero KB .plist.xxxxxxx is created. Clearly there is an issue.
I have noticed it on all late model Macs. Early model Macs capable of running Snow seem unaffected?
Any hardcore techie or Apple developer that may be lurking want to offer any wisdom?

It might be a good idea to update your bug report or file a new one, since it is now on a new update and the previous updates did not fix the issue.
Although I am curious why this behavior does not happen in Safe Mode.
Have you followed through the usual steps for checking you affected account?
Go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

Weird crashes when trying to start app

Hi,
I've got a weird problem on my PM G5 2.0 with my primary user account. Everytime I try to start the demo version of the (java) application LightZone I can click the demo button on the "register/buy/demo-window" and after that Lightzone crashes while showing a message "Initializing Engine Utilities" in its splash screen. I get error messages in my log (attached to this message).
The point is, that the app runs fine on my iBook and on the same G5 but with a differet user account. I have tried different versions of Lightzone, I have repaired permissions, I have repaired my colorsync profiles (see first stack in JavaNativeCrash.log). I have started Mac OS X in safe boot, I have quit all processes I don't absolutely need, I haven even temporarily removed everything from my home folder but Lightzone still crashes.
It can't be the app, as it works with the other accouns and my iBook, it can't be my hardware as it works with the other accounts and it can't be any process I run or anything lying in my home folder. What is causing these strange crashes?
BTW: I also tried re-installing 10.4.7 with combo update as well as Java5. Know what...it still crashes.
Anybody out there?

Since it runs OK on the same computer but under a
different account, it sounds like a problem with your
account, perhaps the application's preferences.
That's what I am also thinking, but I can't find anything special with my account.
• Discard the preferences in your account related to
the application in question. Check both your Home >
Library > Preferences and Home > Library >
Preferences > ByHost folders for preferences related
to LightZone.
I had already done this before posting. I even discarded everything in my preferences folder in order to check for any problems related to bad preferences.
• Check your account's preferences with Pref
erential Treatment.

These have a history of being problematic. I
suggest checking for updates, disabling them, or
uninstalling them.
What? I still have unsanity stuff installed?!?!? I used some of their apps a long time ago, but then I had problems, so I uninstalled everything - or so I thought.
How do you know I have one of their haxies installed? Neither Spotlight nor a terminal search did show anything and judging from a look at their web site I don't accidentally use any of their hacks.
• You should really report this problem to LightZone,
as the first set of Console messages indicate. It's
they're application, they should support it.
I did this, but I never heard anything. Also a web search did not show any other user with a similar problem.
EDIT: Ok, SmartCrashReporter is from Unsanity. But I do not know, where is application is coming from...

Is it possible to package PDF files so that a single file appears as if it is located in multiple folders?

I am currently working on a project for a client that contains numerous hyperlinked files. As an overview, there is a guidebook that contains several sets of activities. Each set of activities calls on two or more individual files that reside in folders outside of the guidebook. Different sets of activities might call on the same individual file. Rather than duplicate it across multiple folders, my preference would be to have it reside in a single location, but be mirrored in each folder it is associated with.

Not sure I see the problem. The file only needs to be in one place, you can link between folders.

LR Preferences, Presets and Catalog

Can you explain the following:
In LR, I specify “Store Presets with Catalog”
I note that there are two LR folders for Preferences and Presets:
C:\Users\Steven\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom
E:\Lightroom\Lightroom Settings (E: is my SSD caching drive where I store my Catalog)
Do you understand how the Roaming LR file relates to the LR Settings file and how they both relate to the Presets stored in the Catalog?
I spoke with Adobe Tech Supp yesterday because I was having difficulty migrating LR to my new computer. (I viewed Julieanne Kost’s video, three times, on how to migrate LR, and still had trouble getting all my Preferences and Presets to show up in my new computer.) I asked the Tech Supp Rep to explain what I’m asking you and he had a little difficulty, but finally said: “The Roaming file is for Preferences; the Settings file is for Presets.” When I asked why the same folder names appeared in both he said I can delete the Presets from the Roaming file, and delete the Preferences in the Settings file. I’m not willing to try this, especially since the naming convention isn't always explicit as to which is which.
In addition, I don’t understand why, if the Presets are stored in the Catalog, they didn’t appear as soon as I opened the Catalog on my new system.
Any clarification or light shedding would be greatly appreciated.

I would agree, this implementation appears to be a retrofit and not properly
thought out. The subject is very confusing and has caused me many hours of
frustration while migrating several LR environments to new systems. Most
importantly, there is now a reply and reference to my question that helps

Spring-loaded folders (when you place the cursor on a folder, press the mouse button down, and the folder opens) isn't working on two of my Leopard installed machines (a PBG4 and a MBP).
I went into Finder Preferences to make sure it was activated, and it was and changed the setting to open faster, but that did not make a difference. The folders just are not responding.
Has anyone else seen this and have a fix? Or maybe I'm overlooking another setting?

Spring loaded folders:
Finder > Preferences > General to set the delay
Space bar to open immediately. Used for putting items into folders.
Stacks are folders dragged to the dock by the trash can, set options by ctrl clicking (right click / two fingers on trackpad click) the folder. Options depend on where you keep the dock. Fan isn't an option when the dock is placed on the side of the screen.

Backup issues. Trying to delete iTunes preference files, but Apple Computer folder is missing (should be in the roaming folder)

Want to backup before a restore, but I have no backup option available in iTunes. I'm pretty sure I found the answer as this has solved the problem for others in other forums:
Remove iTunes Preference files
Some of the files that iTunes uses to store settings and preferences may be unusable and cause issues. iTunes has two folders where preferences are saved. Move one of them to the desktop and test to see if the issue persists. If it does, move it back and remove the second folder. The location for the two preference folders are:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes
BUT after getting into both my roaming and local folder I find I do not even have an 'apple computer' folder. I have iTunes installed on my computer and have used it so I am confused. I use Windows 7.
I would appreciate anyone's help. Thanks!

Nevermind. I found the files. It didn't work anyway as the files kept repopulating themselves after I deleted them and reopened iTunes.

Transferring Mail preferences

I want to transfer my Mail setup from one Mac to another both using OS X 10.4. I've done some of it but I've missed something crucial because my accounts don't show up. Could someone please list the location of the several folders and preference files that I have to move -- or tell me where they are listed since this must be a common problem? Thanks.

FYI, this is a leopard forum and you are running tiger so you ought to be posting in the Tiger forum. however, the answer to your particular question is the same for tiger and leopard. you need to copy the folder /users/username/library/mail and the file /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist to the corresponding locations on the new computer. when you start Mail there it will look exactly as it did on the old computer.

Weird red lines on the NTSC display

After I upgraded to Final Cut Studio, my Final Cut Pro started to show these weird red lines over the image on the NTSC display. It happens very often too, like every other time I pause the timeline. They are bright red lines over the video, and the patterns vary. Anyone know what this is and how to fix it? it's very disturbing.
I've also noticed that the image on the NTSC display doesn't update when I move the cursor around with the mouse, or in my case - the tablet pen. In other words, the image on the NTSC display stays the same until I play and pause again. This also happens way too often. Anyone else having this problem?

When the going gets weird, the weird trash their preferences, repair permissions and run Disk Warrior on their drives.

What are all these folders

This has been bugging me for some time. On my main harddrive I keep seeing all these weird folders at the root level appearing.

What's in 'em? Can you view any of them with textedit? Also what's their file size?

SOLUTION - Re-Index Loops when "Index Now" button is broken

This message is for anyone having trouble with Soundtrack's loop indexing in the following way:
PROBLEM:
... You want to re-index some loops, or
... You want to de-index some loops, or
... Some loops are showing up red
AND...
... You cannot re-index from the "Setup..." button in the Search palette (the minus button and/or "Index Now" buttons are grayed out for some unknown reason)
*HERE IS THE POSSIBLE SOLUTION:*
... Delete all files from the following folders:
Library/Preferences/Soundtrack/
Library/Audio/Apple Loops Index/
... Now restart Soundtrack, and click "Setup...". All the indexed directories should be gone.
... You'll have to re-add and re-index your whole library. This may also affect GarageBand and/or Logic, and require re-indexing in them as well.
*If you're still having trouble...* there may be some more index files floating around your system. Open Spotlight and set "System Files are Included" and "File Name" in the search options and search for "search index". This should show you where any remaining Apple Loop search index files are located, so you can delete them. They will be named stuff like "Search Index E44B5969-5E4A-4E27-A3C2-E5861C5D1FB8.txt".
Hope this helps anyone else out there. It worked for me with Soundtrack 1.1 when my loops were all messed up.

Well, to add metadata and transients to sound clips you need to edit them in Apple Loop Utility which is included with Final Cut Studio.
To add custom loops to your permanent library you need to make a new folder like "My Loops" and put it somewhere permanent like in Library/Audio/Apple Loops and then index it with Soundtrack/GarageBand/Logic. Soundtrack uses the "Setup..." list and GarageBand you can just drag and drop into the loop browser. Not sure about Logic but it should be something similar.
If you wanted to edit the index files manually from the Finder, they are in some weird format and I don't think it's possible.

Stuff not showing up in finder searches that IS there -help!!

I have had some weird thing recently where I have searched for stuff in the finder, for it NOT to show up. I just searched for "preferences" and the only folder it comes up with is "opera preferences" (regardless if "kind" is set to "any" and I manually search from there, or set kind to "folder"). Obviously this is weird as i know there are at least two other folders called preferences one in the user library and one the HD library. Why is this???

Bookmarks in iPad

I accidentally wiped all of the bookmarks in Safari on iPad. I tried to sync it on iTunes, in the hope that it would set the bookmarks back, but it didn't do it, even with a restart.
What can I do?

I called Apple Support - connected with an iPad guy (he had to connect with a MobileMe guy to verify).
He was able to fix my scenario.
This may not work for you.
For me, I noticed that it appear that my iPad had no bookmarks on initial inspection, but a closer look, revealed something interesting:
If I looked at the iPad's bookmarks, I saw that at the top of the list were the official Bookmark containers:
Bookmarks Bar
Bookmarks Menu
which were empty
There were also about 15 or so bookmarks then listed, looked like maybe some old bookmarks from Safari iPhone?
BUT - it also had a folder further down the list named "BookmarksBar" and "BookmarksMenu".
Notice no space.
These folders had all of my old bookmarks! Including one that I had entered the night before from my laptop, so they were definitely current.
AppleSupport had me go into MobileMe preferences on my laptop, Click the "Sync" tab, then press the "Advanced..." button.
Once there, select my laptop, choose the "Reset Sync Data..." option, Select "Bookmarks" from the Replace menu, make sure the arrows showed data going from MobileMe to Computer, and click the "Replace" button.
Voila!
By bookmarks came back into Safari on my laptop (although they had the funny folder structure above).
Then I saved a copy of my Bookmarks for backup.
Then I moved the bookmarks from "BookmarksBar" to ""Bookmarks Bar", and "BookmarksMenu" to "Bookmarks Menu", and deleted the old weird folders and quit Safari. I relaunched Safari to verify everything still looked good, then quit Safari again.
Then I launched Safari on my iPad, and the cloud synced my cleaned-up Bookmarks folder from my laptop to the iPad.
Since then, it has been working fine.
