Weird font issues transitioning from KDE to GTK apps

I'm having some strange issues happening between programs. Firefox and Pidgin, two GTK apps, can render kanji symbols fine. However, if I attempt the same in Konqueror or Konsole, they render as boxes.
Clearly I have the right fonts. What do I do to make Konqueror read them properly?

Justin, Try the following:
1) Quit all open applications.
2) If you have 'Helvetica Fractions', 'Times Phonetic' or 'Rougue Stencil-Type' fonts installed, delete them.
3) Delete your fonts caches with *Font Finagler*, FontNuke or OnyX +(or with whatever utility you normally use)+
*Font Finagler <http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/fontfinagler/> (this is the BEST utility)*
FontNuke <http://www.jamapi.com/pr/fn/>
OnyX <http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html>
4) Restart your Mac
5) Open your Font Book->Edit menu 'Select All' fonts - from the File menu select 'Validate Fonts'
from the Edit menu select 'Resolve Duplicates'

  • Weird Font Issue. Missing Spaces?!?!?

    Okay, i have a really bizarrrrrre problem. I received some
    flash files from a friend of mine. And when i goto edit them i
    notice there is NO space between the letters F and I ---- only
    those two letters in that order. Everything else is fine. I've
    tried differernt fonts, and on some it's fine, and on others no
    space. I've made a new document, and used the same font and get NO
    problem. So it's something in that FLA file. But what the heck??!?
    Does anyone have ANY idea how to remedy this problem?
    (and yes, it's not a kern/ letter spcing issue - actually,
    that will increase the space, but it's starting out as the F and
    the I ontop of each other, so i have to kern like mad to make them
    look normal)
    Flash 7 on OSX 10.4.6

    I'm marking this "answered" because Quark helped me find a workaround for part of the problem. However, the underlying cause is still unknown and I'm still experiencing font substitution messages even though the fonts should be the same because they're all from the same source.

    Hello, just got an iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo today, and after migrating all of my stuff over from my G5 I noticed the font for certain pages in safari and ichat was weird, and I can't figure out how to get it back. I had this problem a while back on my G5 but don't remember how I solved it. I have a picture to show what the font looks like.

    The recent Infinality update requires a uninstall/install of fontconfig.  I posted the same problem here:

  • Really Weird Font Issues...

    I'm not sure what happened, but I keep seeing a certain font on different webpages I visit and in Word documents that I am viewing. This font isn't set in the document or on the webpage at all. Is there some sort of CSS Style Sheet or default font that you can set for the OS? I don't have the issue with my laptop. Just my desktop and its driving me insane! I thought it was just a Safari issue, but I can see the same font when I'm working in Word. Please help.
    Jeffrey Visgaitis

    oh and being in my pocket is just an example of the phone going in to sleep mode...it also does it at night etc. Essentially, just an extended period (over 10 minutes) of not being used.

  • Weird font issues after update.

    After updating to Snow Leopard, I started getting permission questions from Firefox about a font that I had stored on an external drive. Now I'm getting an alert that's in a garbled font. Any suggestions?

  • Page numbering/imbedded font issue ~ converting from Word 2003?

    I am new to this forum, so please forgive me if this issue has been addressed 100 times already!
    I am preparing a novel for publication through Createspace (Amazon). Their requirements include that the fonts all be imbedded, and that page numbering begins with '1' on the first page of the story. When I convert my properly numbered word 2003 file to pdf, it comes out looking great, but the page numbers begin with 5 on first page of the story. So I have 2 questions:
    If the pages look okay in terms of font, does that mean that my fonts are correctly imbedded in the pdf?
    and
    Is there a way for me to control the page numbering so it begins with 1 on the first story page?
    Thanks in advance!

    I'm terribly sorry for the trouble. We are working to address the problem with page numbers in an upcoming release, but for now I recommend you try the conversion again using Adobe Acrobat desktop software. You could download a free 30 day trial if needed here:

  • Weird font issue

    I'm trying to create something with greek lettering.  I'm using Symbol which usually works.  However, for some reason it's doing everything in capital letters despite having typed in the words in capital and lowercase letters.  The lowercase letters are showing as capital only smaller.  This is not what I want.  The font works fine everywhere else including illustrator but not in photoshop.  I need to be able to enter the text (correctly) onto a path and I'm stuck.  What can I do to correct this?

    Check your CHARACTER panel (if not visible, choose Window - Character).  See if you don't have the Small Caps function turned on.

  • Weird font issues! already repaired fonts, archive install

    it hapends in
    safari
    adium
    text edit
    and a few other programs, needless to say, its system wide, not just one application!!
    i have tried verifying all fonts, and that didnt help, and then i did an archive and install, thinking that would fix it, and it has not.

    Make sure you delete the fonts Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic if you have them. The screen shot is too poor to tell for sure, but it looks like the former (or a similar font that replaces Latin with math symbols).

  • Weird font issue in iTunes store

    After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my itunes in my macbook pro retina start displaying gibberish in itunes....

    all the
    small type displays as strange nonsense characters.
    Some mail messages also show the strange high-bit
    characters where normal text should be. I don't know
    which font might be causing this.
    The most common cause of such problems is the font Times Phonetic. If you have it, dump it.
    If you like, send a screen shot for verification (tom at bluesky dot org).

  • Lync -- 3 issues away from being a great app (IMO)

    Lync is a great app when it's all working. If these things got fixed, it might be among the greatest connectivity tools in existence... I would have no serious complaints about it... and I complain. A lot. Here -- let me show you:
    1 - If Lync cannot connect to the corporate network, this is NOT something to use a modal dialog for.
    I suggest fixing this by putting an error message region on the login page of the UI where this kind of thing can be indicated. But, whatever a better answer is, we can be sure that the wrong answer is a modal dialog. I would rather have no message at all.
    Aside from the monumental sin of stealing focus from the user in order to tell them about an issue that likely isn't important, poping out a modal dialog leads to silly scenarios. For instance, if Lync is in that state where there is a dialog on the screen
    telling you Lync cannot connect and you have not dismissed that dialog, then you click a calendar invite to join a Lync meeting you end up with Lync both connected to the meeting while also maintaining a modal dialog telling you it cannot connect. This is
    a trivial pre-alpha mistake and, as such, embarrassing for MS.
    I saw a car the other day for sale which had a "powered by Microsoft" icon in the cabin. The first thought I had was about this dialog I hate (but was followed by other inexplicable MS UI design decisions and bugs) and it gave me pause instead
    of assurance -- I was less likely to buy that car partly due to this persistent issue.
    2 - Lync should be lazily pinging the network to see if it can connect if the connection was not last terminated explicitly by the user
    ...kind of related to #1. Why should I have to click "OK" on a dialog and then "Log in" on the main page when all I did was undock my laptop? Seriously -- this is trivial. Please fix it.
    3 - The enter key on the num-pad cannot be used to start the dialing of the phone number
    Yep -- you have to use the main enter key. SMH.

    Hi MrManMan,
    Thanks for posting in MSDN forum.
    Since the issue is more relative to Lnyc, I would like to move it to Lync 2010 and OCS - Capacity Planning and Performance forum.
    The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most qualified pool of respondents, and other partners who read the forums regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • IPhone transition from PC to Mac - app problems

    I recently bought a macbook, and i love everything about it, except when i went to acquaint it with my iPhone. I have an iPhone 3G that i have yet to have a real problem with until now.
    I plugged the iphone into the mac to get them playing nicely, and everything was great until i went to add a new app. i had it set to "sync only checked apps." it said that it would send the apps from my phone to the mac in the process, so i figured it would be okay, but instead of sending them every single app was deleted (except for aim and jawbreaker) from my phone and they never transferred. it didn't tell me the error message until after everything was gone. it said that this computer wasn't authorized to have the apps.
    i thought all itunes purchases could be authorized for 5 devices, are apps different?
    what is the best method to get my apps back? i paid for some of them and don't feel like paying again.
    all the original apps are still on my PC.
    i had a hard time finding the "right" forum for this since the problem involves hardware, software and a computer transfer.

    i thought all itunes purchases could be authorized for 5 devices, are apps different?
    Yes and iTunes content purchased from the iTunes Store on each computer must be authorized with your iTunes account.
    Since it seems you did not transfer your iTunes library from your PC to your Mac, you can re-download these apps via the App Store with iTunes on your Mac using the same iTunes account. It should be recognized that you already purchased these apps without your account being charged again for re-downloading the apps you already purchased.
    There should be a warning message to the effect that you previously downloaded these apps - do you want to download the apps again and there will be no charge for doing so.

  • Weird and annoying font issues

    I really need help with my fonts.  Xfontsel and term emulators inc. aterm AND rxvt-unicode cannot find many of my fonts inc TTF and non-TTF and i do not understand why.  All my fonts are visible and useable by gtk apps.  They all appear in gtk2fontsel.
    There may be some error in my xorg.conf but i find it diffcult to understand why fonts appear in some apps.
    I can use some artwiz fonts in aterm but they all have huge space between the characters.  this seems weird and makes me think it must be something in my x config or other settings cos they are AL artwiz package in the usual path - if they work for most people they should work for me right?
    Please help – I am getting desperate!
    Here is the section of my xorg.conf:
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/artwiz-fonts"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
    #FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/freefont"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local"
    #FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/sharefont"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/util"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID"
    FontPath "/home/dibble/.fonts"

    well, I used to have "fc-cache -f" run on startup (rc.local) in order to make sure.... sure it took  a bit, but I only reboot after big X changes (because I can't fully wipe out xdm if it is respawning).
    And yeah lanrat - I forgot about the "man fonts-conf"... my fault there.
    And I thought the font dirs were in local.conf.... but you're most likely right (as those are all basically system default font dirs).
    I'll have to look into xfontsel.... it may show TTF fonts, but it uses old XFDL syntax for fonts.... whereas the syntax speicifed above is modern (as of 2001ish) just not used for some obscure reason.
    I sent Kieth an email regarding fontconfig and freetype and font HOWTOs... we'll see if he responds....
    Until then, this is the best guide I've seen so far:
    http://freedesktop.org/~xorg/X11R6.7.0/PDF/fonts.pdf
    EDIT:
    The only conflicting thing I've seen is the following ->
    From above guide, discussing font type handling:
    The list of font modules distributed with X11R6.7 is as follows:
    * bitmap: bitmap fonts
    * freetype: TrueType fonts, OpenType fonts, Type 1 fonts
    * type1: alternate Type 1 backend and CIDFont backend;
    * xtt: alternate TrueType backend
    * speedo: Bitstream Speedo fonts
    From http://freetype.sourceforge.net/freetype2/
    By default, FreeType 2 supports the following font formats:
    * TrueType fonts (and collections)
    * Type 1 fonts
    * CID-keyed Type 1 fonts
    * CFF fonts
    * OpenType fonts (both TrueType and CFF variants)
    * SFNT-based bitmap fonts
    * X11 PCF fonts
    * Windows FNT fonts
    * BDF fonts (including anti-aliased ones)
    * PFR fonts
    * Type42 fonts (limited support)
    The current X.org Server is using freetype2 ( CVS updated to v2.1.8 )

  • Terminus 9pt font issue in Konsole after upgrade

    I have a slightly weird font issue in Konsole following a bunch of upgrades today. Basically, at the beginning of the command line and the beginning of subsequent words on that line, the very first character sort of flashes and gets truncated if it is one of several letters. Very narrow characters are not affected (e.g. i) but most are (e.g. n, g, m, r etc.). Once I press enter, the characters look perfectly normal - the issue only occurs on the line being edited and while I am entering or within words as opposed to spaces. Moreover, it only occurs for the first letters of words. Subsequent letters look fine. Once a space is typed following the first word, the character looks normal unless and until I type another letter or return to edit the first word. If I type "cat" it will be a truncated c; at "cat " all looks fine; then "cat c" and the first c is truncated; "cat cat " all is well; "cat c" with the cursor moved back over the second c and the second c rather than the first is truncated.
    Any thoughts as to what I should check? I'm using the infinality stuff from AUR. I updated that last night. However, I don't _think_ I saw the issue today until after upgrading the kernel. Here are the last entries from pacman.log:

    I'm using Terminus (TTF) in size 9 in Konsole. This hasn't been changed for quite a while.
    Any suggestions on how best to troubleshoot this? Is it possible that I need to rebuild some other AUR packages associated with the infinality ones but which haven't actually been updated? Or is it likely to be to do with something else in the list?
    EDIT: It only seems to be some fonts at some sizes e.g. Monaco 8pt is OK but Terminus 9pt isn't; Terminus 10pt is OK; etc.
