Weird ghost volume

I'm seeing an odd thing, which I suspect is a strange sync artifact. But any advice will be helpful.
I recently bought an iMac for home use. I use MobileMe and have authorised the machine to sync with my work MBP.
I've also copied my iTunes library onto an external HD to use on the machine.
Last night I noticed, on the iMac, that is displays my home user folder for my MBP in the finder window. Clicking on the folder results in an error message "Volume could not be found"
What is it, how do I get rid of it? It is driving me nuts.
Unplugging the HDD, and restarting the iMac, does not take it away.

If it's not active on the network, drag the icon off the Finder sidebar onto the desktop.
If it returns or does not go away, post back.

  • How to solve ghost-volumes of an airport extreme connected hdd?

    Hi.
I use an airport extreme (latest firmware, airport utility 5.6, Lion 10.7.5) to connect to a usb drive (HFS+ format).
Also tried different authentification options (account, airport password) - all with the same problem.
I start the mac and see this in my terminal:
    xy-Computer:Volumes "UserName"$ ls
    Macintosh HD                                   HD
    HD-1                               MobileBackups
I have a duplicate Volumes now which I can access as follows:
HD is empty but in physically on the usb hdd.
HD-1 is pointing to the physical content on HD - which messes up my configuration of software who need access to /Volumes/HD/Shared/
This workaround fixes the ghost folder:
    I disconnect aiport
    I delete the folder HD
    sudo rm -rf HD
(HD-1 , the ghost folder cannot be deleted by the way
    HD-1/: resource busy
    > Now I connect again and only the real folder and everything works again:
    My-Computer:Volumes "My"$      ls
    Macintosh HD                 HD
    MobileBackups
What is this problem - how can I get rid of it?
It happens every day and deleting and stuff really is no fun. Is there a permanent solution?
I found an answer related to my topic on the internet but even as it explains something, it doesn't solve the prob.
    http://superuser.com/questions/20879/how-to-remove-duplicate-ghost-network-drive -on-os-x
Mac OS X mounts drives by default by creating a folder with the name of the drive in /Volumes and then mounting it at that point (so a drive is normally accessible via /Volumes/NAME_OF_DRIVE). Mac OS X will append a -# after the name of a hard drive if multiple drives of that name are mounted. (eg. /Volumes/NAME_OF_DRIVE-1 and /Volumes/NAME_OF_DRIVE-2, etc.) This will also occur if a folder exists in /Volumes/ by that same name. Even though the mount point has a different name the name of the drive will show correctly in the Finder.
An example of what can cause an erroneous folder:
A script or application that writes a file to /Volumes/ExternalDrive/somefile.txt or even an application that when checking if a file exists (eg. open last saved document) creates a new document at that location when the hard drive/network share/USB key/etc. is not mounted. The file will exists at /Volumes/ExternalDrive/somefile.txt meaning the folder /Volumes/ExternalDrive will exist when you next mount.
    Fixing this:
Ensure all drives have been unmounted - use Disk Utility or diskutil list to be sure
Check to see what can be seen in /Volumes/ - recommended to use the Terminal and use ls -laF /Volumes. There should only be one folder (NAME_OF_STARTUP_DRIVE -> /)
Delete the remaining folders. (I'd recommend checking the contents first)
Yes, there is an application I use which checks if a folder exists (not particulary a file). It connects to /Volumes/HD/Shared/ and tries to create the folders there if they don't exist. If it is started before the airport usb drive is accessed, ghost folders problem occures.
    Any advice?

    Update.
I use the airport drive now as supposed to.
But after going to sleep (drive or macbook - can't say for sure) opening the aiport drive appears to work, it connects and is readable. When I then try to write something, an error message appears:
    some text -50
Can't write on the disc. Then I have to disconnect and connect agaiin or reboot.
Strange, isn't it? It seems like a drop out or permission problem of the airport extreme station. I use a network lan, no wifi.

  • Speaker made weird sound, volume level is now decreased

I was watching a video clip online when all of a sudden there was this weird noise (kind of sounded like the sound of dial-up internet connecting, except on steroids). It only lasted for about a second but then I noticed the volume on the video clip I was currently watching got significantly lower.
Now I can't have my volume level any lower than 40% because I can barely hear anything when it is lower. Even when I press the F4, F5 function to lower and raise volume, I don't hear the traditional "pop" sound effect until around 40% or higher.
I tried playing music on my itunes, and audio drops when I am lower than around 30% maximum capacity. Anyone have an idea of what the problem is?

Double click to bring up recent app bar-scroll to the left until you see playback controls/screen brightness.
Do you see the speaker icon?
Is it muted(line through the icon)?
Is the volume slider turned up?
    Have you tried a reset?

  • Ghost volume icon appearing randomly on screen

I have a volume icon that appears on my screen, and much like a ghost in the night, it upsets things..primarily it messes with my mouse to the point where it moves slowly and has difficulty going where I want it to go. When I shut down, it goes away for a while, but then reappears.

It sounds like you have some sort of Backup software that mounts an external drive or network drive periodically.
Generally Macs become less responsive during backups -- and that might explain the jerky mouse movement.

  • Weird Ghost "highlight" box

Ive created a nice little training module for my company. Its
nearly done and I added a highlight box to one of the slides.
Suddenly that highlight box is showing up on two other slides. I
cant delete it and I cant move it. It just sits there. Wnen I view
it in the web browser its there too! Any suggestions/explanations
    for whats going on?

    Rick;
I ended up having to delete all the highlight boxes in the
module. I thought perhaps deleting the one I added that caused the
problem would fix it but that wasnt the case. Luckily, it didnt
take me long to recreate the highlight boxes after deleting. Weird
    thing to have happen tho.

  • Partial Uninstall of App Leaving Weird Install Volume (Terminal fun, too)

I installed Sonarr about a week ago on my Mac (running the latest OS X) and followed all the steps on this page (http://www.htpcguides.com/install-nzbdrone-osx/) (minus the Automater steps as I went with the plist method) and then found out it wouldn't work out for me. I couldn't find uninstall instructions so I ended up just deleting the files. Since then, however, I've noticed the installer volume will sometimes appear when I start my MBP or sometimes an installer will appear when I try to shut down/restart, stopping the process. I think this may have something to do with my improper uninstallation (maybe something with the plist commands not being undone).
Does anyone know what I can do to properly remove all traces of this app from my Mac based on the instructions I linked to? As said, I think the big issue is the plist stuff I put in Terminal, so how could I undo this:
Type this command in Terminal to create the plist file
    sudo nano /Library/LaunchDaemons/nzbdrone.plist
Paste this code for the NzbDrone plist
    <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Label</key> <string>nzbdrone</string> <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>mono</string> <string>--debug</string> <string>/Applications/NzbDrone/NzbDrone.exe</string> </array> <key>KeepAlive</key> <true/> <key>AbandonProcessGroup</key> <true/> </dict> </plist>
Then press Control+X, then Y and Enter.
    Thanks!

  • Help!  Can't get rid of unwanted volume; machine won't shut down

    Hi everyone,
This afternoon I used my Maxtor backup (external firewire drive). After I was done with the backup, I clicked "eject" on the disk icon. I may have physically disconnected the disk too soon after that because I got a message saying the disk might have errors on it because I didn't properly eject it. But I didn't worry about it at the time. Tonight when I attempted to shut down my Mac, it would not shut down... and I discovered that there is a volume on the desktop which is the entire contents of the Maxtor back up. I cannot eject it or discard it, and I have the feeling that is the cause of this problem of not being able to shut down. What do I do? The volume does NOT appear on the disk utilities, so I can't reformat it... In any case, it's not really connected to the computer. Feeling a bit scared. Everything else seems to be functioning normally... Help!

Thanks Klaus. I actually fixed this right after I wrote the post. I manually shut down the Mac, then turned it back on, and the volume was gone. I should point out that when I had the Maxtor hooked up to the Mac, I was getting two volumes for one Maxtor drive -- one looked like the regular hard disk icon, the other (the one that wouldn't go away) was a folder with the same title (Maxtor) and was identified in the "Get Info" command as a volume. I was able to eject the regular icon Maxtor, but never the folder. I guess this was some kind of ghost volume... In any case, shutting down the Mac manually seemed to get rid of this problem.

  • Can't remove ghost object in Pages doc imported from Word

    Hi there,
I imported a Word .docx into Pages '09 for it's better layout and figure handling capabilities.
I ran into a few issues with page numbers from Word being converted to background/master objects, but overcame that pretty easily.
The problem I now have, is that it seems one of the figures from the Word document has become some kind of unselectable ghost object. Which is only apparent because text is inexplicably wrapping around an empty space.
I've tried all the tricks I've found to select background and master objects with no luck. Has anyone encountered this before?
I'm attaching a jpeg of a screenshot of what the document is doing. Invisibles are on, so you can see that there aren't spaces, tabs, etc or an object. Yet the text is wrapping as if an object were there.
I've already made edits to the file, so I would really prefer not to have to delete figures from the Word file and re-import to Pages to fix this...
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks very much!

    Ah great, it worked!
A warning to others, exporting to Rtfd and re-importing to Pages seems to have removed many of my tables and figures from the original document, in addition to the weird ghost figure. I was planning on cleaning up the figures anyway, so this is not a problem for me, but others who try this should be prepared to lose many (but not all, oddly) of their inserted objects.
    Thanks very much Fruhulda!!

  • Weird problem when converting project for 23.976 to 25

We are doing this on a batch of episodes (Just changing the play speed no interpolation.) But basically when we do the conversion some times between the 3 and 4th minute it copies the first frame of the project and pastes it over a frame in the output. It's only like one or two frames. Any idea why this is. It's not a big problem it's just a weird ghost in the machine thing.

  • Duplicate, greyed out, "ghost" songs on iPad

My ipad keeps showing up these weird ghost songs (see attached image). I dont see them on the ipad itself, just in itunes on my mac. I can delete them but later they come back and it makes organising my music difficult. Why are they are there? How can I get rid of them? Its driving me crazy. I have my music set to manually manage. I do not have itunes match (though I used to have it.) What is the little dotted grey circle indicating?
I have the latest ios 6.0.1 and itunes 11.0.1
Any help appreciated. I have seen a few similar threads though nothing quite like this one.
    Thanks,
    Andy
edit - I deleted all the music off my ipad. Usage now shows that I have no music on there but itunes still shows the ghosts.

I had this problem just now when I was trying to copy a playlist I created via my iTunes on my Mac to my iPhone and managed to get rid of it.
I solved it by removing all the 'greyed-out songs' (literally just right-clicking them and deleting) from my iPhone 'On this iPhone' area. Then I disconected my iPhone from my laptop and reconnected it. I let it run all its usual sync functions (I don't have auto-sync selected in the settings for my iTunes - i couldn't fit my library on my phone and didn't want my iPhone library to be constantly re-synced). It says 'Waiting for sync to start'. Then, 'Syncing items 1 of 4' ...)
Then I just dragged the playlist mix over to my iPhone and they all loaded - no grey/grey circle anymore. Hope this helps!!

  • CS4 - Unwanted ghosting effect showing up in all videos - Similiar to an onion skin

I'm having some sort of weird ghosting effect on all my videos in Premiere Pro CS4. It's similiar to an onion skin that shows the previous frame. It shows in the timeline preview and when I render out the video. I've never had this problem before until just a few days ago. It even shows up in old premiere files that I made weeks ago that didn't have this problem at the time. I've even tried working on a different computer using a different Premier CS4 and had the same problem.
Is anyone else experiencing this or have I gone crazy?

The videos are 30fps and so is the project.
Are you sure of that? That's definitely frame blending, which occurs in two instances: when a clip has been explicitly time-altered (e.g. from 100% to 33.33%), or when a clip's frame rate does not match your sequence frame rate. For instance, your clips might actually be 30fps, but your sequence is probably 29.97fps--a minor difference, but enough to cause the problem you're seeing.
Confirm the true frame rate of each of these, and if they're different, you can put the clips in the correct sequence, or you can interpret your clips to match the sequence--a change of 30 to 29.97fps is not going to cause any weird slow downs.

  • Ghosting on monitor

I'm getting a weird ghosting effect along the bottom third of my LG monitor. There is also a thin white vertical line that goes about a third of the way up the screen. If I use the cursor to select this region of the screen I can see a clealy defined quavering demarcation line that runs along the entire bottom third of the screen and there is a ghosted image of the cursor and any icons within this area. The rest of the screen is free from this effect.
    Video card is stock HD2600.
The strange part is that when I boot from an external drive which has a cloned system prior to installing the Leopard Graphic Update 1.0, there are none of these issues.
I had really hesitated before installing the Leopard Graphic Update, but decided to go for it in order to install the Firmware updates.
Is there any danger in simply cloning back the pre-Graphic Update system from the external drive now that I have done all the firmware updates?

For those interested, here are some pics of the problem. The first two show the ghosting issue while booted from the stock 320gig Seagate drive, system 10.5.3 with Leopard Graphic Update 1.0. The second two are while booted from an external FW drive.
Below are pics while booted from external FW drive without Leopard Graphic Update 1.0:

  • IPhone speaker volume unequal for each speaker

This is weird; the volume on my left iphone speaker seems much louder than on my right one. Is there a balance control somewhere? I cover up the right speaker and hear no difference; cover up the left; and I block 95% of the sound....
    Normal? Not?

The only "grill" or opening on top front face is the iPhone's earpiece, which is nothing but an earpiece. To the left of the earpiece located underneath the glass is the iPhone's proximity sensor and light sensor, which doesn't have an opening through the glass.
The iPhone has a single speaker - always has - with the first generation or original iPhone, with the 3G, and with the 3GS.

  • Image Link Problems in Illustrator CS3

Am running on Mac OS 10.4.11. Mac is a Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5. File server is an IBM x3650, running FullPress Software and Xinet and Flashnet.
When saving files in Illustrator CS3 with preserved image links to hi-res images on the server, other users who later open that ai file, have to manually relink to images on the server. If the file is opened on the Mac that created it, images link automatically when opened again. The problem is that other Macs do not see the links/paths to the images.
It is frustrating and time-consuming. The problem seems to be isolated to just 2 specific Macs. One with the spec as above, and the other is a 2x2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, running on the same Mac OS.
All software installs are same on all macs in my studio.
The overall problem is : 17 Macs. 15 of these can open files created on each others Macs without issue. However, if files were created on the 2 "problem Macs", link issues arise. The 2 problem Macs have link issues with ANY other mac when opening files saved on any other Mac.
Sorry for long winded nature of this, but can anyone help? Have tried all sorts and have run out of ideas on this. URGENT help needed! Thanks.

    Thanks Ian and Jim.
    Have solved the mystery.
Opened files in Text edit, and the links defined section, did show ghosted volumes on problem macs.
So, went to desktop > From the Go menu, select Go to Folder >then entered "/volumes"
This brought up the volumes and highlighted some anomalies. Folders appearing with same name as my server, meaning when the server mounted it added a suffix of -1, -2 etc.
    MANY THANKS Gentleman.
    Tim.

  • Quality issues with render (especially with text)

I'm having trouble getting my video render to look the same, quality wise, as my view in After Effects.
Here's a screencap from my After Effects view. Full resolution, 100%.

Here's a screencap from the video playback in Quicktime after render. Best Settings, Lossless (Animation).
    http://share.shpigford.com/images/export-20100602-105317.png
What render settings do I need to get that text crisp when rendering?

I've tried playback with QT7...same problem.
    Text is not 3D.
When I import back, no field interpolation is added...it just looks exactly like it was exported (with fuzzy edges).
I am noticing that the problem seems more prevalent on the text that has some motion to it...so maybe it's some weird ghosting/artifacting thing to make the movement smoother? As far as I can tell, I've disabled anything that'd cause that, but maybe there's some setting that I missing?
Something worth noting...if I export the video as a TIFF or PSD sequence with trillions of colors, the frames are crisp as they should be. The problem is that the sequence then become prohibitively large (12MB+ per frame).
