Weird Gmail behavior in Mail

I have an e-mail account hosted by my IP and they farm out e-mail to Google Gmail rather than handling it themselves. It appears that I can receive e-mails from everyone else accept from accounts I have hosted by another IP service (with one exceptoin which I'll note shortly). I discovered this when I sent my wife a file to edit and she sent it back — but it was never received. The URL being hosted by the IP that farms e-mail out to Gmail originated from another IP and was transferred.
By way of example, here's what works sending mail to [email protected] (this is the account hosted by the IP service that farms e-mail out to Gmail)
[email protected] > [email protected]
[email protected] > [email protected]
[email protected] > [email protected]
However, nothing from any other accounts hosted by my other IP service (from which I originally purchased the myURL.com which is acting flakey) is ever received by [email protected]
[email protected] > [email protected]
I've checked all of the Gmail settings in the troubled address ([email protected]) and they are the same as my directly Gmail hosted address ([email protected]).
If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions — they would be appreciated because I'm slowly going insane trying to figure this one out.

I don't know for sure this is what will work, but set up separate SMTP servers for each Gmail account, using your specific logins for each.
On the Account page in Preferences, Account Information, select Edit SMTP Server List from the Outgoing mail Server (smtp) popup menu.
Copy the current one for Gmail and edit it to use the necessary login information.
For each account, select the desired smtp server and set the checkbox to only use that server.
When you reply or compose a new message, make sure From indicates the correct account.

  • Apostrophes trigger weird backspace behavior in Mail

I upgraded to Mavericks a couple of days ago, and since then I've had the weirdest and most annoying problem in my Mail app (and ONLY in my Mail app):
If I type a contraction ending in "re", (example: we're, they're), the spacebar sends the cursor back one character instead of adding a space after the word. So, it deposits the cursor back beteween the "re".
If I form a contraction with any other letter combination (I'll, he'd, it's), the spacebar does nothing on the first strike. I have to hit it twice to get a space after the word.   At all other times, the spacebar functions normally.
I've tried turning off spelling checks on my global keyboard preferences, and on Mail.app preferences; I've tried restarting the app and my MacBook.  Nothing helps.  And since I'm not a very formal writer, it bites me in the *** approximately seventy thousand times a day.
Is there any way to cure this disease?

Are you sure that the "smart quotes" box really fixed the problem? I have the same problem, but what happens is that when I type an apostrophe, it is at first a straight apostrophe, until I hit the space bar after the word in which I used it, at which time the straight apostrophe turns into a "smart" (i.e., slanted) apostrophe, and the cursor jumps back to the end of the word that was just autocorrected from straight to smart apostrophe.
Turning off smart quotes indeed prevents the backspace, but it does so by *not* turning the straight apostrophe into a slanted apostrophe. So yeah, it prevents the annoying backspace, but at the cost of functionality. How has apple not fixed this after all these months? Does mail just not misbehave this way for most people?

  • Using Gmail with Apple Mail.

Has anyone else encountered strange behaviors retrieving your gmail through Apple Mail. The issue I'm having is it seems to pull in the last couple days worth of email every time I open apple mail to check my mail. Pretty annoying when you get a lot of email. Any suggestions?

Couldn't wait. Found it under Preferences -> Accounts -> Advanced.
I changed it from One Week (the default ? ) to One Day.
    That should help.
I have my Apple Mail program set to FORWARD every message that comes into Mail to a Gmail address, and on Gmail I have preferences set to reply to all messages from the email address they are sent to, so my email that goes to Mail generates replies that look like they come from Mail.
Allows me to keep a record of all emails I receive.

  • Gmail's Apple-Mail-To-Do's no longer appear under Reminders

I use gmail as my mail utility (set for IMAP).
Before the upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5.7, my To Do's appeared in Apple Mail under Reminders > To Do > Gmail. They also appeared in iCal. On my iPhone they appeared in the Apple Mail To Do folder. If I added a new To Do, everything synced.
The other day, all of my gmail folders temporarily disappeared from Apple Mail, however, they began to automatically re-appear over several hours. (A problem with a gmail server?) (BTW, before this occurred I noticed lots of activity under "Mail Activity", copying To Do's between gmail and my mac, even though I had no recently added, edited, or deleted a To Do.)
All is restored, except my To Do's no longer appear in Apple Mail under Reminders > To Do > Gmail. (My To Do's still appear on my iPhone under Apple Mail To Do, and they still appear in Apple Mail under Gmail > Apple Mail To Do.)
If I add a new To Do (by highlighting Gmail under Reminders > To Do, then add the new To Do) the new To Do fails to appear in my "Apple Mail To Do" folder and thus can't be viewed on my iPhone.
All I want is to be able to track a list of To Do's on my Mac (in both iCal and Mail) and on my iPhone.
    Help!

    UPDATE:
Hmm, well it seems to have recreated the weird folder 'ToDos.mbox (Server)' (that is the name of it on the server).
I have successfully moved my to dos from Apple Mail To Do to ToDos.mbox, so now my question is, as I have deleted Apple Mail To Do and just have the oddly named one, how do I get Apple Mail to rename it and use a more user-friendly name like it used to. Basically I just want it back to being called 'Apple Mail To Do'. (Renaming it on the server will just confuse Apple Mail again.)

  • Gmail appears in Mail 4.2 but is not in my accounts pane

Hi all. I will try my best to explain this weird little situation about Gmail in my Mail client.
Okay - I've just bought a 27" iMac running Snow Leopard and after the setup, I configured my Mail acounts. I have three accounts, one of them being Gmail, and after everything was configured, I started to get gmail mail from way back to 2007 and my inbox kept filling up with tons of old gmails.
Next, I deleted gmail from my accounts pane in Mail. It solved the duplicate emails issue fine. In fact, I still get current Gmail mail coming in, which is weird, as Mail is no longer set up to retrieve it.
Now this is my REAL question for this post: how can I compose a message using my Gmail address? I know that since the account is not setup in Mail, it follows that the address is not selectable from my drop down menu, however, is there a way of going back and setting up Gmail in my accounts pane without getting all of those old duplicated emails?
    Thanks so much,
    B.

You could do a search in Gmail itself, delete the old messages, and then re-create your account. Better yet, archive those messages, and then you'll have them in Mail if you need them, but they won't be cluttering up your inbox.

  • Why are messages in "Inbox" and in Gmail's "All Mail"?

Hi. I've set up Mail in 10.5 to download my Gmail account using IMAP. Why do messages show up in my "Inbox" and in Gmail's "All Mail"? If I want to delete a message, I have to delete it twice, once from each location. The messages appear in my "Mailboxes" and in my "Gmail" headers. Can I remove the "Mailboxes"? Thanks for your help.

that is normal behavior for gmail imap actually and is the result of time delay in syncing between the inbox and the all mail mailbox, in other words, even though you read an email in inbox, it may show up as unread in all mail. to avoid confusion you could go to mail>preferences>general and choose "inbox" for your "dock unread count" option. As for all mail, that is where gmail stores all the emails in your gmail account. so if you delete an email in that mailbox, then that email and the entire thread it is associated with, i.e. replies/forwards... may be deleted too. so, if you have created other mailboxes in your gmail imap account such as work, family, vacation... then be carefuly. my suggestion is, if you indeed have such mailboxes, then do not erase email in all mail, but concentrate on the trash and sent folders. additionally, but from your post i am sure you did so already, you need to make sure your gmail account is properly mapped. in gmail, next to all mail, are there other mailboxes such as sent/trash/delete/junk? if so, select one and go to the mail menu mailbox>use this mailbox for.. and choose the appropriate mailbox. repeat the process until done and you should have only the all mail and starred mailboxes left in gmail.
finally, if you do not use additional mailboxes in gmail to store emails, and do not plan to do so, then you could add "inbox" in mil>preferences>accounts>advanced... in the imap path prefix and the offending mailboxes you allude to will disappear. note that if you do use other mailboxes, then these will disappear also.
    hope this helps

  • Gmail IMAP Sent  Mail folder missing in Mac Mail

I made a change in Mac Mail by using the Mailbox/Use this mailbox for Sent Mail menu item on the [Gmail] Sent Mail folder and the original
[Gmail] Sent Mail folder has vanished. It still appears in the Gmail web interface and is checked on to show up in IMAP, but it doesn't appear in Mac Mail. Sent messages to appear in the Mac Mail snet folder, which is fine but I want to [Gmail] Sent Mail folder back. I tried turning the "show in IMAP" setting in Gmail on and off and it works for other folders, but not for the "Sent Mail" folder. I also tried restoring an older copy of the com.apple.mail.plist file but that didn't work either. Any ideas how to get it back? Pop is turned off as well.

It seems this is the desired behavior in Mail, as I don't need the [Gmail] folders to appear since the mail is all in the Mac Mail folders.
Of course, this might all break again when I upgrade to Mavericks :-(

  • Iphone, Gmail, alias, sent mail

I have been trying to use Gmail with my Iphone, while using alias (an email address other than my Gmail address) for my outgoing address. It works, except that I can't get the messages I send into the sent mail folder. If I substitute my Gmail address for the alias, the outgoing messages then show right up in sent mail. But I don't want to do that; I would like my recipients to see the alias.
One potential solution that seemed momentarily promising was to enter my Gmail address, followed by a comma and the alias. But in the Iphone mail app, you can't use a comma on the line where you enter your outgoing email address.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get my mail into that sent mail folder? Thanks

It seems this is the desired behavior in Mail, as I don't need the [Gmail] folders to appear since the mail is all in the Mac Mail folders.
Of course, this might all break again when I upgrade to Mavericks :-(

  • Unable to create new email from Gmail account in Mail

I just installed gmail to retrieve messages within Mail: I can receive gmail messages and reply to gmail from Mail. However, I cannot create and send a new message in Mail using my gmail account; when I do I get the following error message:
    Enter Password for Account
    smtp.gmail.com:xxxx[account name]
The SMTP server "smtp.gmail.com" rejected the password for user "xxx[account name]"
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
No matter how many times I add it correctly and click OK, the same message returns.

Google provides instructions for setting up a Gmail
    account in Mail here:
    http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13
    275
Make sure you’ve set up the account as described
    there.
That is what I used to set up my gmail account in Apples Mail App before your post. Those instructions say that when you click on the Advanced Tab that the port will switch to 995 - which it did for me. I do have a minor problem though. Is there any way to prevent emails sent from Mail via gmail from showing up in gmails web page? I don't really like web mail whatsoever!

  • My firefox locks up routinely on Gmail and Yahoo mail sites. It opens normally, and when I go to the login page, it locks ... in both instances.

My software locks up while I have Firefox open and am seeking to login to either gmail or yahoo mail.
It works well until I get to the login screen ... and then locks and will not allow any keyboard or mouse work ... except that I can get to my taskmaster and close Firefox and then everything works.
Today, for the first time, it did it on another site.
    Is there a 64bit iteration?
I am using the 32 bit Firefox ... the latest version (This all began with this upgrade) on a 64 bit/Windows 7.
    Thanks. rg

    Hi,
Please check if this happens in [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode Safe Mode]. Safe mode disables the installed '''Extensions''', and themes ('''Appearance''') in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons'''. Hardware acceleration is also temporarily disabled - the manual setting is '''Tools''' > '''Options''' > '''Advanced''' > '''General''' > [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window%20-%20Advanced%20panel?as=u '''Use hardware acceleration when available''']. All these settings/options/add-ons can also be individually or collectively disabled/enabled/changed in Firefox normal mode to check if an extension, theme, option or hardware acceleration is causing issues. Disabling/enabling hardware acceleration, and some types of add-ons in normal mode may require a Firefox restart.

  • Can't see some letters from my Gmail box in Mail.app in MAC OS 10.8.5.

Hello, can't see some letters from my Gmail box in Mail.app in MAC OS 10.8.5.

The solution was to remove all versions of Acrobat Pro and reinstall Acrobat Pro XI. I still had the download file in my Time Machine backup. That's a good thing, since the download link from the order listing on the Adobe website under my account would not work.
The problems don't occur with version 11.0.0. I got the work done, now I'm updating to 11.1.0 and will report if they came back.

I worked with an apple tech, tried several things, and then she suggested I contact Mozilla support.

  • Missing gmail folders in Mail for Mt. Lion

I moved a lot of email to a gmail account to archive it (originally from MS Exchange), creating mail folders to hold the mail. This worked fine. But on updating to Mt. Lion, I can no longer see any of these folders, only the stock gmail folder (All Mail, Bin, Drafts, Important, Sent Mail, Spam, and Starred). I can see these folders and mail when I look at the account via a browser, but these folders are no longer accessible via Apple Mail. What happened and is there a solution to this?

Tried it. No difference. There are just the stock gmail folders visible. Note that I CREATED the folders and moved the mail using Apple Mail in Lion a couple months ago. It is only since upgrading to Mt. Lion have they been inaccessible.

  • TS1843 Not receiving apple mail.  Connection Doctor says not connected to server.  Yet receiving gmail and yahoo mail.

Not receiving apple mail.  Checked connection Doctor.  Not connected to server, yet receiving gmail and yahoo mail.

No, I have a Mac and my email connects via our pacbell account we've had for years.  However, something in the Preferences/Accounts is not correct I am guessing.  Also, it asks for the password and if I put it in and click save through general or viewing, it's NOT saving it and still not allowing me to get email. My husband tried reading about this through our AT&T acct and said to change the incoming server to imap.mail.yahoo.com and outgoing smtp.mail.yahoo;[email protected], but now I can't receive or send any email on my Mac. In advanced not sure if it should be Port of 465 or 900 something or other and SSL checked or not.  I called AT&T and they want to take over my machine by charging $15/mos for a year to fix this.  Ridiculous.
So, everytime prior to yesterday, when my husband messed around with it, I was getting a POP needs password box, typed in my password, but to no avail..Then it Keychain password popped up and assumed it was the same, but there's no way to change or modify it even using the new password my husband set up through AT&T.  I am at a complete loss.
I can access mail through yahoo mail and it takes me to AT&T Yahoo Mail, but no contacts are there so needless to say this is a pain.
I appreciate any assistance you can give me so I can get back on my email as I have for 4 years.
Thanks Hackintosh...I look forward to hearing from you....you can use the email above and it will come to me through my yahoo web page....Thanks again and let me know if you need any other information.  If you respond on here, I may not get the answer from you as I didn't know you responded until I came on discussions.  THanks
