Weird goings on with my ipods

hi everyone,
i posted in the shuffle forum on this but now it seems to be happening with all my 4 ipods. !
when i plug one of them in to the computer
itunes does not automatically open anymore with any of them but a window opens with a drive letter (i'm up to (U:)
and in the window are 3 folders
calendar
contacts
notes
i don't get it. something has happened and i don't know what it could be.
i reformatted the shuffle back to factory settings and now when i drag a song over a new empty window opens with the drive letters going towards Z each time a new letter and i transferred over 32 songs in 1/2 hour i got 2 songs over.
i do not have any spyware, malware or viruses on my system.
can anyone help ?
thanks very much !
michael.

what make and model of camera do you have?
do all these mysterious drives have the same capacity as the camera?
i'm wondering about this because i know that some cameras (such as the noir household kodak) use software that convinces bits of Windows that the camera is a hard drive. i figure if something went ... exotically ... wrong with that, it's conceivable that we could end up with fake drives breeding like rabbits on the PC.
(off the top of my head, i can't think of another thing that could cause this, so let's check the hunch first, and then i'll start doing some research if this doesn't pan out.)

  • Weird goings-on with my ratings

Strange problem with my iPod (30Gb 5th generation) and iTunes 7 (running on Windows).
My iPod is full to capacity with just music. I rate music as a listen so that I can delete songs I don't like and replace them. I use the iPod rather than iTunes as "master" of my music (which I've been told is a bad idea, but that's another story).
Every evening I plug the iPod into the computer so that I can scrap tunes I don't like. I don't use any auto-syncing at all - it's all manual.
This usually works fine. But yesterday, I plugged in the iPod and found that about half of the (roughly 4,000 tunes) I had previously rated had reverted to no rating, and lots of them had had their ratings jumbled. Many had half ratings, which I've never used or even seen before.
This is a royal pain in the arse. I've searched around a bit on the web for answers to this and it seems that quite a few people have had a similar problem. Some thought it was related to rebooting an iPod (which I had done several times yesterday), others to not having used it for a couple of days, others that ratings had been "bumped up" one song or two. But no one seemed to have an answer.
    Two questions
1 - does anyone know what the **** this is all about?
and more important, 2 - is there any way I can get my ratings - which took months to sort out - back?
    Thanks in advance -
    Tom

    I don't use any auto-syncing at all - it's all manual.
You indicate you are not using auto-sync, which is most likely the root of your problem.
When using auto-sync, if you rate a track on the iPod... the rating will be be maintained and sync back to your iTunes library.
If you are not using auto-sync, this will not happen and you are likely to get undesireable results upon your next manual iTunes sync.

  • Bridge CS5 - weird goings on with thumbnails...

Hi, I'm using Bridge CS5 and raw images from a Minolta Dynax 7D.
Initially I thought the problem was just that thumbnails weren't being updated after an edit in Camera Raw, but its a bit more complicated than that.
If I view my thumbnails through folders (explorer type view), CR changes are seen immediately in Bridge (as I would expect!).
If I view my thumbnails through a saved collection, CR changes are not seen in the thumbnail unless I then make some other change with Bridge - give/change a label or star rating for example - or switch to Folder View - or choose Clear Cache for Selection from the pop-up menu. Not only are the thumbnails not updated, if it was a first time CR edit, the icons above the thumbnail that show a CR change are not displayed either until one of the above is done.
This is so weird, please don't tell me this is by design!
I have Camera Raw version 6.3.0.79; thumbnail options are set to Always High Quality.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for your repsonse Curt Y, sadly it doesn't solve the problem.
I've played around with various cache settings in CR and BR and although purging it does force the thumbnails to be re-drawn in any view, subsequent changes when viewing through a Collection aren't shown. Compacting the cache appears to do nothing.

  • Weird Goings on with Log4J on Linux

    Hi there,
I'm using the Log4J package to output logging statements to catalina.out from my webapp. After a while the logging statements seem to begin to duplicate exponentially. Each statement is printed out multiple times from the same thread. I know Log4J is thread safe, and this doesnt happen on windows, Im running Mandrake 10.1
Anyone seen this before, Is this a problem with Mandrake rather than Log4J.

  • Weird Problem With My Ipod. Can you help?

I'm having a weird problem with my ipod and I hope someone here can help. I have a Nano, 4 GB. I got it back in June, so I haven't even had it 6 months yet. Ever since I "updated" the software, it hasn't worked right. It kept freezing on me and saying I had no songs on it. Finally when I reset it through iTunes and loaded brand new songs in it, it froze half way loading. I loaded it for a 3rd time and now it's making a weird alarm sound for no apparant reason. The buttons are stuck and I can't shut it off. It just keeps making this sound and it won't stop. When I reset it by holding menu & select, it resets, is fine for about 20 seconds, then starts back with this alarm. Is there anyone that can help me with this?

    Mine was the similar condition.
When I reset iPod nano by holding menu & select, it resets, is fine for about 20 seconds, then starts back to the screen of black and white state.
    It keeps endless loop.
It happened on the way of iPod nano firmware update to 1.1.1. from 1.0.2.
Instead of completing firmware updated, the above symptom happend in my case.
I could exit the above condition by pressing both of SELECT &
    PLAY button 5-10 seconds long.
    It manually change DISK Mode.
The following subject was useful for me.

  • Weird things with my ipod

I've been having a lot of problems with my iPOD. Whenever I reset it, because sometimes it freezes, it stays on the Apple logo for a little bit. Then a dead ipod image appears and then the apple support web site comes up. I'm not really sure what to do. I've tried resetting it a lot and nothing seems to work.

Try this Hard Reset, (it wont delete any song or data on your iPod), from time to time to clear the cache.
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
If it doesn't work, bring it in to Apple Store for the Genius to have a look.
    Good Luck!

  • Very weird problem with my iPod

I have a 4th generation 40 GB iPod. I have a strange problem happening with my iPod. After it is fully charged I can use my iPod no problems, after what seams a random amount of time the screen seams to freeze and go pixely. The music plays fine but I can't go through any menus. After the battery dies I charge it and the screen is working again fine.
Any ideas on why and how this happens would be great!

dk07, glad to know I'm not the only one having this problem. I hope you can get it figured out as well. It is very frustrating.
Jeff, I appreciate the links, but I've been over those first two quite a few times, with no success. The last one is a bit more interesting though.
I guess what I mean to ask is; Is it possible that my iPod is actually charging all the way, even if I never get a "plug" icon and the bar never goes above 3/4 on the battery indicator, no matter how long I charge it? Can the battery indicator be 'that' off? I have yet to run into a help topic or tutorial that addresses specifically an iPod (with a brand new battery) never switching to the plug icon or never going beyond a 3/4 bar. I am willing to accept that the battery indicator may be inaccurate as to the actual charge, but the specific issues seem not to be as common as the general one; and that is what bugs me.

  • Whole slew of problems with my iPod and I'm about to go nuts..

My 1.5 year old 4th generation iPod has been having issues recently after having the same issues in the past. Freezing, sad iPod icon, etc.
It was hooked up to my computer when all of a sudden it said that it was corrupted (it was fine before). So I went to restore it in iTunes, and it couldn't. I disconnected and tried to restore it, it didn't work. I tried to force it into disk mode, and I can get the Apple to come up, but then it makes a weird buzzing/clicking noise and the sad iPod face comes back up.
I've been having funky problems with iTunes too, though nothing like with the iPod. Is it worth sending in the be serviced? It's too old to be covered under its warrenty, and I'm a poor college student (it was a present to myself two summers ago for working all through summer instead of taking a vacation) and I need to be sure that the cost of getting it repaired is worth it.
4th generation (I'm pretty sure)   Windows XP   Makes a weird whirring/clicking noise, though there aren't any loose parts inside.

Thanks for the link, I tried a couple more things in there and managed to force it into disk mode only to have it fail on me again. Now I'm unable to get past the Apple icon without running into a sad iPod or a folder with an exclamation point, it likes to switch it up.
I think there's something wrong with the hard drive, as the link says I should hear it spinning when it turns on. Mine starts, but clicks and stops as it misses something and the cycle repeats.
Since it's out of warranty, there isn't a whole lot I can do as far as cost goes, but I will definitely explore all options before buying a new one.
    Thanks again!

  • Help! WHAT is wrong with my iPod?

When I try and turn on my iPod you see the Apple logo and then it jumps to a gray folder with an exclamation mark...under it, it says www.apple.com/support/ipod. I installed the disc it came with and did all the troubleshooting but nothing. Any ideas? Also when it says updating the updating sign is tiny and in black and white.

The Sad iPods icon or folder with an exclamation mark are the toughest problems to deal with, and must do a Restore in order to fix it. However, when your iPod is showing this icon, it is probably too late for your computer to recognize the iPod.
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    8. Try to do an Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a format with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer). You may need to plug and unplug your iPod with the computer for several attempts, and switching around Format and Restore, and hope out of sudden, it will get recognized.
    9. Diagnostic mode solution – which I copied from a thread of a post from thinktwice
“Then I cam across this special Diganostics Mode that you can get to by resetting and then while the Apple is showing pressing the Select and backwards keys simultaneously. It bring up and weird Diagnostic utility witha a abunch of tests. Here is what I did
    - I tried the 5in1 test and got and error on Firewire.
    - I did the HDD R/W and surprisingly it passed.
    - I went on to the HDD scan. This supposedly tkaes acouple of minute so I waited. I think 4-5 dots appeared then nothing. The iPod started to get hot. THe disk was spinning away. After a while the battery got very low. THis test chews up the battery. So I escaped out by resetting and went to connect it to a power source.
My USB was dangling out of my computer and I was too lazy to get the Firewire AC adapter thing going so I connected expecting the whole lockup thing with iTunes. Surprise. IT was recognized immediately and has been working like a champ. So go figure.
Details on Diag mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
10.Let me ask you a question, if an iPod with no iPod software with it. When your connect it with a computer, what would happen?
Yeah, the computer will treat it as a fresh external hard disk, which will get force mounted, the computer will ask you to format the iPod. It does not really matter the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted iPod software on the iPod, after that the computer will recognize it.
Once it has been completed, eject your iPod, open the iPod updater and interestingly, you will able to do the Restore this time.
Base on the above, that's why I suggest Windows users who experience trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac machine or vice versa. PC computer will not recognize a Mac formatted iPod, but it will get mounted in an attempt to format your iPod.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.

  • Serious Problems with anything IPOD related

I've recently had trouble with my IPOD. I connect it to the computer and see the charging splash screen for a few seconds and then it stops. My computer doesent detect it at all (like it used to) and my IPOD wont even turn on. I read some troubleshooting on here and went ahead and uninstalled everything. I uninstalled quicktime, IPOD, IPOD updater, and ITUNES. I then downloaded both ITUNES and IPOD updated and in each instance I get this very very weird command line parameter:
    Command line parameters:
    /L language ID
/S Hide intialization dialog. For silent mode use: /S /v/qn.
    /V parameters to MsiExec.exe
    /UA<url to InstMsiA.exe>
    /UW<url to InstMsiW.exe>
    /UM<url to msi package>
After I receive that message I click "Ok" and absolutely nothing happens. It never did this before, I never had problems with my ipod or itunes before, nothing. I have no idea what the catalyst for all of this is. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    BUMP!!
Now when I plug my IPOD in it actually has a splash screen. It shows a folder icon with an exclamation point. I imagine it shows that because I uninstalled ALL IPOD related software. The problem is, I STILL cant install any IPOD material, I get the same error code I posted earlier over and over again.

  • Using the calendar option with the iPod

Hey I don't know if this question was asked, but I seem to have this weird problem with my iPod... When I look at my calendars, every event is an hour late... In my outlook everything is fine, it's just on the iPod. I'm on windows XP and I have Outlook 2002, which means I'm still on iTunes 6.0.5.20 (the new one only worked with Outlook 2003). I'm sure the problem must be very simple, but I can't seem to find it!

... i'll warn you in advance that i'm no expert on using contacts and calendars. but is the ipod still set to daylight savings time? (or not set, whichever applies in your case?)
to check, in your Main Menu go "Settings > Date & Time > Set Time Zone". does the current setting have a DST next to it?

  • Something is definately wrong with my iPod.

Ok, so my iPod gets the "sad face" support screen. I think no problem, ill just restore it. When I try to get it into disk mode to be able to restore it, I see a picture flash really quickly that shows a battery with an exclamation mark. Does anyone know why I see that? I also am having trouble getting into disk mode for some reason.
Also, another thing that is weird with my iPod is that I plugged in my ipod to the power, and it got hot quickly.

It can't have no power, because I have it plugged in to the charger while doing all this.
Also, my charger should be working fine because I never had that problem untill today when I got the "sad face" screen.

  • Synching To Do in iCAL with my iPod touch

I enter To Do items in iCAL. They seem to appear automatically in a folder called To Do under Reminders in Mail.
However, I have not found a way to get the To Do items to appear on my iPod.
If this cannot be done by simply synching either iCal or Mail with my iPod, is there any app which can be recommended that will allow me to enter To Do items on the mac and have them appear on the iPod?

If ou turned on Settings > iCloud > Find My before it was lost, login to our iCloud account, click Find My Phone and see if it shows up.
To show Find My must have been turned on, it must be powered p, and it must be connected to the Internet.  Without all of those you will not be able to find it.

  • Can No Longer Connect Wirelessly to ITunes With My IPod Touch

While I can connect to the Internet with my IPod Touch through my router, I cannot seem to connect to ITunes wirelessly. My device only shows when I have it connected through the cable directly. The Apple help site hasn't been much good, as they suggested to completely uninstall ITunes (I followed their instructions implicitly) and re-install. Same problem. Not sure if this has anything to do with the new OS....but it's suspicious.

My computer that I have ITunes on is hard wired into the router, which makes sense since it's on my computer desk But as I said, wireless works fine so It's logically not the IPod, it's not the router, so it has to be either the new OS or ITunes.

Funny thing is, my desktop is hard wired too, but for grins and giggles I put iTunes on one of my laptops, and used the laptop to reset my iPod to factory settings.  Wireless synch still didn't work....
What really aggravates me is when you go to the KB to find out how to troubleshoot an issue, the articles are pretty much blank.  Click here, set that, but no real explanation of how stuff works or what can cause it to break....
One thing I have noticed is the KB article says that after you tell iTunes to use Wireless Synch if you don not eject the deivce, it will stay connected when you unplug it...  I never saw that behavior....
