Weird green squares on screen

I have been having a graphics issue with my 15" MBP many months after having bought it. Upon closing my laptop and letting it sleep for hours while I sleep, I always find it having these weird large square boxes all over the screen and sometimes it freezes my screen entirely.

My first instinct was to assume it was a software related problem.
Reasons for assuming this:
The error is usally remedied by restarting my computer.
Sleeping in safe mode gives me no error.
When the screen freezes, the on-screen mouse pointer is still responsive.
The distorted, colored squares can remain in place and are not a result of dead pixels on the laptop screen. (Note the picture here: When the screen shot is placed infront of the squares, it covers them up http://i.imgur.com/ydsRY4s.jpg)
I have done PRAM resets and it usually fixes the problem for sometime. However, I have come to conclude that it is simply the restarting of the computer that fixes this problem. It can sometimes go away for weeks or months at a time and then re-inflame. Unfortunately, I have misplaced my OS boot disk so I am unable to currently try install my OS on a different partition to see if it is solely software related.
I have also read of a user who had a similar problem and they said they had to get their graphics card replaced. However, when they received the new graphics card it magically had the same problem. This would be highly coincidental (although not impossible), which makes me lean more to it being a software related problem.
Has anyone else experienced a problem like this?

Open up a 2nd account to see if the issue appears there.

Recently there have been a few green squares appearing on my screen at random times. Today more than usual appeared, my computer froze and they would not go away even after restarting three times. I only manged to get rid of them after reinstalling Leopard.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

  • Rented movies have floating green square spots all over screen

We have a new Sony KDL-52W4100 connected to our v1 Apple TV via HDMI at 1080p. Cable images std and HD look great, DVD and Blueray look great, all functions of Apple TV (photos, intro, menus) look great. Rented TV shows and movies have large floating green squares all over screen. Has anyone else experienced this?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
This sounds like the file is either corrupt or there is an issue with output from the tv. Firstly, I wasn't aware that tv v 1 software supported 1080p, I suspect you are either running v 2 software or you don't have 1080p as an output resolution.
I doubt all your rented movies have become corrupt so I'd be looking at your HDMI connection as the source of your problem, have you tried another cable, is it seated properly. You should also be aware that 1080p requirers a category 2 HDMI cable (although in many cases category 1 does suffice)

  • Little green square in left-top corner of my screen when watching some DVDs

Hi, since I bought my T61 7 months ago I experience little green square in the left-top corner of the screen when watching the movies from DVDs, I tried to clean DVDs, they were not scratched and they were originals from Blockbuster. This happens only to some DVDs, and sometimes when I try to run them again, the green square doesn't show up, and movie is running good. But in most cases, DVD won't run good at all. My T61 model is 7658CTO, 1GB ram, GMA graphic card, 14.1 widescreen. PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS ISSUE, I very appreciate your time and effort.

Thank you for your help, but the same problem occurs even if I use Windows Media Player or the one supplied by lenovo. Does anybody else has the same problem, I really want to solve the problem so I can use any player, anyway thank you for your help, it is for sure one of the solutions, I appreciate that

  • MSI GTX580 Twin Frozr II OC Edition; Battlefield 3 green squares artifact crash.

    Greetings respected moderators!
I came to your forum because I seek your help. Allow me to explain my problem. Today when I've played Battlefield 3 after a while my game crashed - it froze in place. The screen displayed small green square artifacts all over the screen. I had to force shut down the game with task manager in order to resume using my computer. I've restarted my game and continued playing it until it happened two more times in a short amount of time. Then I've decided to look into it.
This is what my screen looked liked, although this image is not mine. I'm only using it as a reference.
The most interesting thing is that I've only had this happen to me(exactly the same type of crash) once or twice in the past when I still had the old drivers. Back then I was using High video settings in my game. About a week or so ago I formatted my computer and installed the latest NVIDIA drivers - 310.90. This time I was using the lowest video settings in my game. Yet the game crashed more than it did with the higher settings. This puzzles me...
I did some research on the internet and what I've found out is that this type of crash is very commonly associated with GTX 580. Users with the same problems posted on many forums and the replies they got were all sorts of possible reasons why this crash occurs. One of them is being overheating. I've tested that and ran my game the fourth time after my third crash, and the temperatures of the GPU didn't go over 70°C. Then I've also did a stress test with MSI Kombustor and the temperature stayed under 70°C. So I believe I can exclude overheating.
The next very common thing that users wrote was that the GTX 580's core voltage was set too low by factory default, causing this type of crash with DirectX 11 games while playing them. By manually increasing the voltage it seemed that it was the most common fix for the problem. According to MSI Afterburner my core voltage is 1025 and people on the forums suggested raising it to 1100, therefore fixing their crashing.
Third thing that I've read was that this is caused by the latest 310.90 drivers. Some users with the problems reverted to the old drivers and the crashing stopped, while it didn't fix it for others.
Now my questions is: Why did my game start crashing all of a suddenly, in such way on lowest video settings and so frequently, when I could play it for months on end with higher settings without a single crash?
I do not want to overclock my GPU and unfortunately I do not remember which were the NVIDIA drivers I was using before I formatted my computer.
I thank you in advance, wise moderators of this forum and hope that you will be able to help me.
    Have a wonderful day!

    Good day to you Svet!
Like I've wrote before, the only changes I did to my computer were the updates that came with Live Update 5. I only installed driver updates through that. I did it regularly ever since I've got my computer 7 months ago. Back in those 7 months the crash only happened once or twice.
Then a week ago I formatted my computer completely, reinstalled Windows 7 and also applied all of the available updates that came with Live Update 5. I've also downloaded the latest NVIDIA GPU drivers. The game worked flawlessly for the whole week until it started crashing yesterday.
Also I had no idea that the overheating could start at under 70°C, especially because I have two extra fans installed, one in the front and one in the back of my case so that there is regular flow of cold air, which enters in the front and exits at the back.

  • Premiere 7: a lot of clips contain green squared 'structures'

I use Premiere 7. When making my video films I have on many places 'green squared structures' on the screen. They do not occure when previewing my clips directly from my camera on the tv-screen. But they are also presented on the burned dvd's!
    See 2 screenshots.
    thanks for advice

I do not understand why you are ending up with files named MOV116.mod.mpg in Premiere Elements in your process of renaming the file to MOV116.mpg beforehand.
Let us put that aside for a moment and look to the DV AVI conversion. I think that you will get your best results using the MPEG Streamclip for the conversion as described in that same Steve Grisetti FAQ where you found the Windows Movie Maker suggestion. Also check out the bottom of the following thread here
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/485471?tstart=0
and my further details on settings for MPEG Streamclip, especially the part about checking “Deinterlace”.
I did not realize that Windows Movie Maker supported files with the .mod file extension. But, from my experience, MPEG Streamclip gives the best results for those .mod files.
As for your results with Windows Movie Maker which gives Microsoft DV AVI type 1 (Premiere Elements uses Microsoft DV AVI type 2). Almost always there is no problem because of this. But if there is one, you could change the Microsoft DV AVI type 1 to Microsoft DV AVI type 2 using the free program DVDate
    http://paul.glagla.free.fr/dvdate_en.htm
But, what happens to the horizontal lines of the “DV AVI” from Windows Movie Maker if you right click the video on the Timeline, select Field Options, and then select “Always Deinterlace” or one of the other options there?
Let us review the steps that you used in obtaining your DV AVI from Windows Movie Maker:
    1. File Menu/Import into Collections/browse to your .mod file/select/click Import (verify that you brought in a file with a file extension of .mod here, not something else)
    2. Tools Menu/Options/Advanced Tab/select PAL 4:3
    3. Drag the imported file to Timeline
    4. File Menu/Save Movie File/My computer/Next//Save Location & Name/Next
    5. Movie Settings. There you should have a dot next to Other Settings and show DV-AVI (PAL)
That should proceed to put your DV AVI on your hard drive save location that you designed.
    6. You would bring that DV AVI into Premiere Elements with its Get Media/Files & Folders.
I will be watching for your progress.

  • How to make the adapter to have a green square at the monitor?

At my adapter monitor, the adapters have different symbols in front them:
a green square, a grey diamond or  a red mine.
Could you tell how to turn all of them into a green square?
    Thanks and points guaranteed.

    hi,
In adapter monitoring u get list of all the adapters which are installed on ur XI server.
It has various coloured icons which gives status of that particular adapter like
green: gives all the messages came to adapter are processed successfully
gray: indicates that adapter is not active
red: indicates that processing of atleast one message is errorneous.
If ur adapter is with gray color u need to go to Visual Admin from there u need to start that adapter with a service of that particular adapter.
If adapter status is red then there should be atleast one error in communication channels respective to that particular adapter.
At that time u need to go to that communication channel, check what is the error and then correct it in ID reactivate it and then resend message.
eg: If u r using RFC adapter in one CC and in adapter monitoring u r getting red flag for RFC adapter then check that CC check error eg JCO connection or Cannot login user authentication means there is error in ur username and password for that R3 system whcih u provided in ur CC.Then change these parameters in CC and reactivate and resend message.
    Then check ur adapter.
    Thanks.

Open your QuickTime control panel (either via the Control panels, or by going "Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences" in the Quicktime Player). In the Advanced tab, uncheck Enable Direct3D video acceleration:
... and click OK. Quit and restart the QuickTime Player prior to checking to see if the settings change has had any effect.

  • Compression errors: HDV to HDV/DV (green square dots)

    - Compression errors: HDV to HDV or HDV to DV (green square dots) -
I'm having compression errors when trying to export HDV Projects using
    - FCP Export Quicktime movie
    - FCP Using QT Conversion
    - Compressor
For example today I tried to export 1,5 hour HDV Project (edit version) to master HDV clip. I used FCP Export QT Movie and the new master clip has 19 compression errors. Most of them were during first 30 minutes.
    See the picture from: http://www.aavekammari.com/comperr.html
Errors are mostly green dots lines, but they can also be other coloured dots or just small squares.
I have tried to remove extra RAMs, using only Apple's original RAMs, tested RAMs with couple of softwares. I read somewhere else that the RAM could be the issue.
Does anyone else having this kind of problem?
Final Cut Studio with all latest updates (FCP 5.1.2) / Quicktime 7.1.3
    G5 dp2.5/2.5GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    http://www.aavekammari.com/comperr.html
It seems that errors can appear even when rendering in FCP (second picture in the link above).
    I did some research.
    - when I tried to export QT file: In 1,5 hour project all errors were during first 50 minutes.
    - when I forced FCP to render all clips (CC added): All errors were again during first 50 minutes!
So I found that all media files in first 50 minutes are in the same internal HD (not same where the FCP is). And the rest of them are in external firewire HD. Could this be reason, but why, anyone?

  • IPhone, displays green/blue stripey screen and locks.

I have an original iPhone that has suddenly started to malfunction.
The phone seems fine but when it goes into standby mode it becomes unstable. If I receive a phone call, text or try to wake the phone it locks displaying a green/blue stripy screen.
This screen will stay on until/unless you reset the phone. After the boot sequence the phone has then lost it's setting such as date time etc. The big issue being that if the phone malfunctions in your pocket you do not know until the phone/screen is so hot it is almost burning your skin. This as you may expect is a massive drain on the battery life.
Is this a common problem and is there a way to fix the phone?

Sounds like a hardware problem, but have you tried a Restore? Else, since the Original iPhone was never officially available in Norway, you must have a hacked/jailbroken phone - Apple will not service it. If a Restore doesn't help, you'll need to buy a new phone.

Opened up the PB from sleep yesterday and was greeted with a blue, then red, then green, then white screen. Fan started up but no chimes. No icons or other symbols on screen. Tried to restart and force shutdown with no improvement. Each time I restarted, the same blue, red, green, white cycle.
Had no apps open when PB put to sleep prior to this problem.
    Help!

I just got a g4 15 in from ebay, worked fine yeasterday and today. This evening it went red, green, blue then white. I read the posts and thought great bad logic board. I squeezed the display at the edges (I had a 5300 cs that did a simlar thing) and the screen came back on. Anyone else have any luck with this?

  • Once in awhile a little green square pops up in top right corner!!! what is it

once in a while a little green square pops up in top right corner!!! it not my battery icon well at least it dont have the outline. anybody know what it is?

That is the orientation lock indicator. It means that you phone will not go into landscape mode when tilted on it's side.
To turn orientation lock off double tap the home button, to access the multitasking menu, then swipe your finger to the right over the multitasking bar at the bottom and touch the big button on the left with the padlock.
