Weird HDD Read & Write Speed

Been running some tests on my relatively old editing machine as i try to squeeze the most out of it before i upgrade within the next few months. I was quite suprised to see these speeds for the G-Raid:
Raid0 2x750GB WD Green NTFS:       W158.4     R159.6
Single 2TB WD Green NTFS:              W77.6       R78.0
G-Raid 2x1TB Esata ExFAT:               W56.8       R134.9
Any ideas? System is as follows:
Q9550 @2.83ghz
Asus P5q PRO
8GB ddr2
250gb seagate 5400 system drive
Asus 670GTX 2GB
I appreciate that the WD Green's are crap, the system was built well before i was into editing, i'll be steering clear of them when i get around to my new build.
I'm trying to edit 4k scarlet footage and things just aren't going very well for me, understandably. I have been using the g-raid as the media drive so far and the raid 0 as the cache drive, will i see any performance increase swapping them over?

Regarding the R-RAID, your #'s are way low. You can try:
- format to NTFS
- update motherboard drivers and firmware
- make sure windows caching is turned on for your eSATA drive letter and that buffer flushing is turned off
I will assume that you have CS5, 5.5, or CS6 since you are trying to edit 4k Scarlet!
No matter what you do with your drives, your Q9550 processor, which was introduced in early 2008, is pretty lame compared with newer CPUs.
Make sure your playback window is way dubbed (i.e. 1/8 res) down and "render all" before you try to work on your timeline if you really need to nurse your old system along with Scarlet.

G710 hard drive read/write speed

Hello,
I have a brand new Ideapad G710 with 1TB Serial ATA 2, 5400rpm with advertised speed of 3 Gb/s (= 384MB/s).
I am running Windows 7 ultimate x64 with SP1.
When I test hard drive read/write speed (I used CrystalDiskMark) I get results of about 100MB/s, which is 3-4 times slower than it should be.
I am not running any resource heavy applications (Resource monitor reports Disk I/O to be 0 most of the time in idle state). I have 3 partitions, each with 16-32GB paging file size and all are >90% empty. All partitions have been defragmented before testing.
Is this normal? Are there any lenovo drivers or utilities than I might be missing or that can slow/speed this?

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
The results that you got while running CrystalDiskMark is normal. The SATA 2 (3Gb/s) that you mentioned is actually the SATA interface support, not the actual read/write performance.
If you have a Seagate HDD (eg. ST10000LM024), check these specs
From the above specs, the unit has a cache that has a read/write max speed of 145 MB/s but there are environmental factors and power requirements to get this speed (eg. read/write speed on AC power is differente from battery power).
AFAIK, if this is the specs that is design for this drive, there's no way to speed it up.
If you're planning to upgrade in the future though, you can get an SSD for faster read/write.

Are my read/write speeds up to snuff? MacPro Octo 2.26

What are typical and good read/write speeds I can expect on my MacPro Octo 2.26 10GB Ram.
According to iStat, on a simple copy, I get about 65-70 MB/s read from a WD 640 caviar black internal bay, and 65-70 MB/s write to a WD 640 caviar black internal bay. Are there any apple docs that explain what we can expect, how to enhance? You can skip RAID talk, this is just basic stock computer and best operating procedures I'm speaking of. Thanks!
The OS is on a WD 74 Raptor drive.

Drives keep evolving.
It depends on what you copy, and what matters, or, where if any place is there a bottleneck?
Newer 10K VR drives maybe, boot drive is important.
SSDs definitely boost system.
Isolating I/O between drives (system, scratch, media, etc) really helps so all the work and I/O is spread out.
Newer 1TB and above drives with 500GB platters and higher density, too.
Best differs from video editing, to mild editing of files, to very heavy work in CS4.
Also, keeping your drives to 50% free space, or what I do for some drives is short-stroke so I really only use one outer partition to work with and use the rest for junk and inactive archive/backup and storage.
iStat - never used it and definitely not for benchmarking drives.

Thunderbolt drive Read/Write speeds have significantly dropped

I got a new Western Digital Thunderbolt VelociRaptor drive. When I did speed tests on it using "BlackmagicDesign" Speed Test software initially (when empty) the drive was giving me read and write speeds of 350 MB/s. Now however I have 90% of the drive occupied with data and the read/write speeds have dropped significantly to 230 MB/s. Any ideas as to why and how I could improve this?

Apple's AirPort base stations aren't known for fast file serving, but for most purposed they're fast enough.

Hard drive read write speeds are too slow

I was having an issue with 17inch macbook pro. was getting 4.0mb/s read write speed tops. and smart status failure.
So i replaced the drive. The new drive is a 7200 RPM 500GB WD drive. I'm getting 12.0mb/s on top speed. Computer feels a little quicker but still slow overall.
I ran this test on a fresh install of snow leopard.
Is it just me or do those read/write speeds on the new drive still seem slow?
2007 17inch macbook pro with 2gigs of ram.

How can i measure sequential read/write speeds?

I suggest you leave it like that then. Benchmarkings are all synthetic ones. The real life performance is what we need. There are many benchmark enhancement techniques other SSD players in the market improvise on their product so that it's sell off like anything. At the end of the day, it all depends on what you're getting out of your SSD .

Read/Write speeds with Airport Extreme and USB Hard Drives

Anybody know how fast the read/write speeds are with a USB hard drive and the Airport Extreme Base Station?
My Setup
I have a 17 MBP (2010) and a 13 MBP (2011) - no SSD's
MBP generally connect via 802.11n 5Ghz with a very strong signal
Gigabit connection on a Windows Desktop
I have a variety of external drives (7200, 5400, Drobo) at varying capacity (320GB, 2TB, 5.6TB)
Goals
Backup: Time machine
Backup: File copies of pictures and home videos (greater than 1GB files)
Backup: Crashplan
File sharing: Aperture libraries--not sure if that is possible or practical. That is something that I need to research further...but on the off chance people have experience with it.

Toshiba SSD vs Samsung SSD and inconsistent read/write speeds

I've heard that some of the 2011 Airs are shipping with Toshiba SSDs where others have the Samsung SSDs. Apparently the Toshiba ones are considerably slower and are more likely to be in the 13" models where the Samsung SSDs are more likely to be in the 11" models. I was curious if anyone out there has an 11" model with the 256GB option, and if so, which SSD did you get in yours? I have the Toshiba drive in my 13" MBA with the 128GB SSD. A co-worker has the same model machine with a Samsung drive.
As Apple doesn't promise a minimum SSD read/write speed I don't really see any justification for them to offer an exchange on a unit unless it's defective (which this would not be considered defective in their eyes). Thus my recommendation for the return. The other problem is there's no discernible markings on the outside of the box that indicate which drive is in the machine, plus Apple doesn't let you "try before you buy."
Even given the slower Toshiba speeds, I'd be really curious to see someone max out the capabilities of either drive.

Required read write speeds

i'm currently in the process of building a NAS and have been previously working with a firewire hard drive box..
my question is simple (at least i think so).....what are speeds that are typically seen when editing with firewire boxes....i was using a 800 firewire box and i know real world situations you don't get 800 mb/s....
i edit HD footage (captured AIC 1080i @ 60fps) and this new NAS box that i'm building says it can achieve anywhere between 22-45mb/s read/write speeds
will this be fast enough?

Macbook pro 2011 HD read/write speed

My 2 and half year old macbook pro seemed little slow so i did read/write speed test and it shows about 45MB/sec read/write speed. It is normal for a old 5400rpm hard disk. I have mountain lion.

Yes, that's probably about normal for an older, slow drive.

Macbook Pro 1.1 how to improve read/write speed

I am looking to improve the read/write performance of a 2006 2.16 Intel Core Duo Macbook Pro with 2gb RAM (the max), that I use on a specific job in a specific workflow.
In the workflow there are three retouchers using three different MBPs and transferring files via Ethernet network to a fourth MBP (the one in question) which is used as a dropbox, if you like.
So the MBP in question has no applications running. Files are saved to it and opened from it and saved back to it.
How can I improve read/write speed on this MBP under these conditions?
Would installing an SSD be the answer? Or is it really a processor issue and there's nothing to be done? I figure RAM doesn't really come into it, but in any case 2GB is the max this model can accept.

I haven't got the logs. I had to reinstall everything in order to get it to start up (Couldn't find ACPI?)
And I'm only asking because it seems like my laptop HD is running slow. Is it normally about 5mbps for a 5400rpm HDD?

Loss of read/write speeds fusion drive

hey guys!
little confused, when i first unboxed my iMac i was getting Write speed of 320.0 MB/s and a truly amazing Read speed of 715.0 MB/s a mate popped round this morning and i thought i would show off and show him the speeds, i ran the same benchmark and i got Write speed of 310.0 MB/s and a Read speed of 519.0 MB/s
i ran the test a few times and even rebooted the system...
where has the speed gone lol, i mean... im not complaining... its still stupidly fast, just wondering where it could of gone

Just a guess here but when you unboxed your iMac everything was on just the SSD. Now some of your data has also been put on the SSD and your speed test feels the effects of core services moving things back to the HDD. Just a guess.

Increase Read/Write Speed of Macbook Pro?

Recently I've decided to purchase a BlackMagic Design Thunderbolt to use with my Late 2011 MacBook Pro in order to capture video game footage. I have test recorded and found that there is a lot of dropped frames and playback is nearly impossible.
I have run a disk speed test and it shows that my MacBook Pro is lacking the required read and write speeds that require me to capture my footage at the desired framerate.
How do I go about increasing those speeds? I know that I should replace the Solid-State Drive (SSD) but where do I start in terms of purchasing one?

I still think you should upgrade your HD and RAM as you have been advised.
However, you confirmed my suspicion that you are using Uncompressed video setup, and that's the primary cause of your issues. Uncompressed is unnecessarily huge and would not be used in a consumer setting such as PS3 or even an HDTV.
Before I recommend QT ProRes, however, what is the exact connection you are making ... are you going from your PS3 to your HDTV and then from there to your BlackMagic? Or directly from your PS3 to Blackmagic? What AV out are you using on the PS3? Is your PS3 a PAL version?
You mentioned it's a PAL HDTV and you are using 720p60. That doesn't make sense. 720p60 would be NTSC, not PAL. Mismatching PAL & NTSC video can cause all sorts of headaches; there's a big difference between the frame rates. This may be the cause of your apparently dropped frames. If this is truly PAL then then 720p50 or 1080i50 would be appropriate settings.
