Weird holes in text

I keep getting a weird hole in my text as if there's something the text box with a text wrap when there isn't (just the images on the side). Tried different text, same weird hole. I've managed to get rid of it by clicking 'ignore text wrap' but in this case I need the images on the side to wrap the text. Also it doesn't happen to the text on the left side (and it was duplicated over from the left hand spread in the first place!?!).
I've attached screen shots (both in preview and grid view) so any ideas anyone, let me know. It seems like a glitch to me. Weird!

There could be an object with a text wrap underneath your text block. Something like this where I have a white frame with a text wrap on the master page:
Try selecting the text frame and check Ignore Text Wrap. If it goes away then you know you have an object under the text frame:

Why are there weird boxes around text in the Apple apps I use in mavericks?

After I updated to Mavericks I noticed these weird grey boxes that appear around the text in some of the Apple-made apps I use lime Pages, Reminders, etc. Also, in a finder window, whenever some of my tabs are open, the tab's colour is different from that of the header of the window. I checked other people macs which has mavericks but none of them had the same problem. Here are a few images of my problems:

Weird inexplicable Flash text behavior. Help!

I've been searching high and low for an answer to this and
this is the first time I've posted to a flash forum as I've got
nowhere so far.
I've been building a few sites in flash that rely heavily on
loading plain text files into the swf file (for the purpose of
quick and easy text updating) using the commonly used LoadVars
script (see end of post for an example script).
And normally this works absolutely fine - but then sometimes
something weird starts happening after I've re-edited a text file
and uploaded it.
Here is example text content using 'news' as my load variable
in a text file.

Testing. Testing.
123.
Testing.
It works!
Normally this should appear like this in the flash movie when
using the script that you can see below:

Right?
Yes! And it indeed does.
Except, why is it that at some stage after I've edited and
re-saved/uploaded the text file lets say for example to:

...do I then get this?

Extra blank lines suddenly appear in between the lines of
text - as if invisible BR tags are suddenly added.
There is no difference in the nature of the text file - just
a bit of text editing. If i go back to the original text - i still
get the extra blank lines - unless I upload a copy of the original
(untarnished) text file. This inexplicable behavior is not
predictable - it might be many times that I've edited and uploaded
a text file before I then start seeing this - and I've used
different three or four different text editors - as well as online
browser based text editors such as that found in net2ftp.com.
In addition to this - I only see this behavior in a browser
when viewing the site online, but when viewing the site offline
locally, these extra blank lines never appear!
What's going on?!
Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

after a line, some place a linebreak, and some place both.
Additionally it would seem that some that place one or the
other don't recognize the other one and so if the file has those it
adds the one it would rather see.
And of course Flash recognizes both a \r and a \n (return and
newline) as a "newline."
I don't really know what to tell you for fixing it. First I
would recommend that you use a text editor that saves a UTF-8
format. Flash seems to have less problems with that format than the
others. You can look through and remove extra \r and \n characters
after loading the vars. And in the end I stopped using LoadVars for
this type of thing and instead went to XML and using a CDATA tag.

Weird auto bold text bug

I am having a bizarre issue with either indesign or reader. I'm working on a catalog, and I have it set up exactly the way I want in indesign. When I transfer it into a pdf it still looks correct, however when I print from the pdf it bolds part of the text that shouldn't be bold, in a font that doesn't have bold options. The weirder even, on some pages it bolds the bottom half of a line of text and not the top half.
This issue only started today, and it seems ok when I print direct from indesign.
I've also tested it on 3 different printers with the same results.
Any ideas what may be the issue?

You are right.... I was freaking out here thinking I may need to redo large portions. Thank you so much.
Any idea what causes this? Seems like either a design flaw or a bug, as a 100% transparent layer shouldn't change the look of things behind it. It's especially weird that it's making text more bald instead of obstructing it.

Weird shortening of texts in multiple applications - 3 week upgrade

I wanted to post a bug report, but I have absolutely no idea what package is responsible for shortening of texts/labels...
In chromium and avant-window-navigator texts and/or labels are shortened by "..." in illogical places.

In the screenshot you can see bookmarks being shortened "Reader" to "Rea..." and KOS to "..." or You to "..." and down in avant the same thing is happening... I didn't know there was a package which determines the shortening of labels across applications, but it is the only explanation I could think of...
I suspect this affect other applications which I don't use regularly...

Yup, it might be a radeon driver problem. I did a fresh installation on my laptop, which has a intel integrated graphics card, there is no such problem there.
About the second problem, it turns out that we have to choose languages in Region/Languages settings explicitly as Gnome 3.6 introduces this new feature, otherwise the Character Encoding system of Gnome would be unspecified and cause those problems.

Weird, system-wide text misalignment

I've got this issue that shows symptoms in a couple of places. First, it affects Dashboard. A prime example of this is the large numeral denoting the current date in the calendar widget. So today it's a large "7". The number itself has shifted upwards inside the widget, so instead of being split in half by the line, it's split at the bottom of the number.
Secondly, it affects iPhoto. In Events view, the name of each event has shifted upwards as well, so the top half of the words are on top of the event thumbnail itself.
I'm sure it is visible other places as well, but these two are the ones I notice all the time.
FWIW, new accounts do not show this problem. I logged in with the Guest account and the dashboard calendar widget looked normal as did iPhoto, so this is a user-specific issue.
Can anybody help me figure out what the root cause of this issue is?

Turns out the myriad variations of Helvetica Neue I had installed were confusing the system. It is annoying, however, that now I have fewer variations of Helvetica Neue to use (these are extreme variations, like Black Condensed Oblique, and Extra Black Extended Oblique), but instead of deleting them, I just disabled them so if I have the urge I can use them later if I want.

Weird White text at the bottom and in the search bar of iTunes

So my iTunes (ver.10) somehow has a weird white colored text at the bottom where it tells you what your song count, days, and gigabytes in your library are? And the text is a super light gray in the search box in the upper right hand corner...what the heck? Does anyone know how to change this?

Either the iPhone has crashed in some way to cause it to corrupt badly enough to need restoring to work (either hardware issue or software corruption) or it has been connected while holding down the Home button.
Try resetting the handset (Hold Home & Power together for 15secs until Apple appears) and if it still goes back to recovery mode it means there's a major software issue or a hardware fault

ID CS3 Transparency weirdness with text/special effects

Okay, I was putting together a brochure for my job today and noticed this oddity. I placed a text box w/text over a stock photo and printed it out - everything was fine. Then I added a drop shadow to the text and all of a sudden the photo became rather desaturated.
Just in case this was some sort of weirdness with that particular document, I created a new document, placed several photos on a page, and then created a text box and applied a drop shadow. All the photos on the page again noticeably lost saturation, and here's the weird part, the text box didn't even touch any of the photos. It only appears to affect items on the same page - items on other pages are unaffected.
It seems whenever you have an object or text frame on a page with transparency or a special effect like a drop shadow, all the photos on the page lose about 20% saturation.
Am I missing something that I can compensate for, or is this a bug/feature?

I'm using shadows and transparency overlays in my InDesign CS3 application. When I output that file to a press resolution pdf file, it appears fine. However, when the digital printer runs the project, the transparency disappears and i get white boxes in the place of transparent boxes.
The print provider is a non-offset source and is using some other RIP to process the file. Is the transparency feature posing a problem in the offset invironment?

Very weird internet problem :I

Hi everyone, I am calling for all the experts because I have spent my last two days resolving this problem without any success.
I moved to a new location Saturday where I set up my Airport Extreme to provide a wifi network. The extreme is connected to the ISP's modem in Bridge mode. ISP modem address is 192.168.1.254. My Macbook gets usually the 192.168.1.4 IP address, DHCP is the 192.168.1.254. I have in this network my MacBook and the wife's Vista on a desktop PC. MacBook is up-to-date with 10.5.8. (Or, better to say, that was the starting system version)
What I experience is, that some of the websites are working in my MacBook (meaning they are loading in), while some not. That means white page, no content at all, loading goes forever. For example youtube does not come in. Adobe does not come in. Apple.com works. I couldn't find any pattern why a site can't load.
Safari and Firefox makes the same, so it is probably not a Safari bug.
The machine with Vista (on the same network) works with every webpage (using Firefox). I didn't had this problem on the old location.
I did the followings:
- I took my MacBook back to the old location, where the old network I used for years still works. Same problem. Never had this before. Then a got back to the new location.
- I connected the MacBook via cable to the Extreme (Aiport in MacBook disabled), same problem.
- I created a new user, nothing.
- I created a new network location, nothing.
- Reset Safari, nothing
- Tested browser capablities in various sites. I had some which were not loading at all, but the ones that worked gave back a good result, meaning every plug-in worked.
- Reset modem, reset Airport Extreme, nothing
- Changed wifi channel (from 6 to 4), nothing. I live in a village, no wifi pollution anyway.
- Deleted Safari and System cache, nothing
- Verified Disk permissions, some problems were found, repaired them, nothing.
- With the help of apple support I deleted some System configuration files which were automatically generated by new start, nothing
- I did a complete archive and install
- I tried out everything without an update (that means 10.5 and Safari 3.0.4), almost the same.I had some pages which were working after 2-3 min waiting, but with youtube for example I get some weird, almost only text content with small pictures and no video. After 2-3 min wait of course. And a message, that java is old. Hit the link, went to Adobe, slowly loading but I couldn't download the .dmg, Safari says network error, server could not be found.
- The I did an update (through Software Update, bandwith was O.K). System 10.5.8, newest Safari, the same problem that I had before archive and install. Youtube won't load at all.
- Then I did a complete new install with erase. Nothing, problem stays!
So, now I am sitting in front of a brand new installed MacBook with 10.5 (no updates yet after installation) and I really don't know what to do now. The problem seems to be not software related. The problem seems to be not network related (Vista works on the same network). Can this be a hardware problem? I really can't imagine it...

I did talked to the ISP and got the access codes to the ISP router. It's a WLAN broadband router, by operating mode I see the following option checked:
Wireless ISP: In this mode, all ethernet ports are bridged together and the wireless client will connect to ISP access point. The NAT is enabled and PCs in ethernet ports share the same IP to ISP through wireless LAN. You must set the wireless to client mode first and connect to the ISP AP in Site-Survey page. The connection type can be setup in WAN page by using PPPOE, DHCP client, PPTP client or static IP.
So, would it mean, that if I connect my Extreme in bridge mode, than I do not have double NAT and that is the correct way of connection?
To clarify the situation, I have a microwave antenna and that is connected to the ISP router. Then a LAN port of the ISP router is connected to the WAN port of the Extreme. (I did try to connect it to a LAN port of the Extreme, everything was the same).

Can't see text entered on second page

My wife is trying to write a school paper on her iPad in Pages. The first page works fine. When the doc gets long enough that it goes on to the second page, it gets weird sometimes. Text entered via the on-screen keyboard does not display. The cursor moves, but the text isn't there.
It will display when she rotates the iPad. Then the keyboard and the data redraw and it's fine.
Any suggestions?

I just got Pages yesterday and had the vanishing text and typing over text thing happening. I thought it might have been the pictures files I added to the document were big files and it was slowing it down but today I worked on the same document and did not have the problem. The difference is that I was listening to iTunes on the iPad while working in Pages. But I also had removed a couple of objects and was only working on a one page Pages doc for today.
For me it might have been playing music and working in Pages at the same time was a conflict for the iPad.
I'm fairly new to the iPad and very new to Pages.

Responding to group texts?

my mom sometimes sends me an image of something and it shows up as going to some number (sometimes i don't know who this is since they are not in my contacts) and "3 others.
then when i respond i get some email from someone asking me some question because - well, - ah, because responding to the group text went to everyone in the group?!
can anyone tell me what is going on here or if i can send the text to the SENDER in some way? part of the problem is that when i get the text it does not show up as coming from my MOM and instead shows up as coming from the group somehow.
i mean, i can't quite figure out what is happening but i know i get a text from someone that is like "huh? it is snowing in alabama" and then i also get a reply from my mom in chicago...

I guess this is a "Group MMS"?
so - i see here that the text today (the image) just shows up as a new "Messages" and that it is the only message showing under this number. the message is listed with a little mac group icon and then a number +1 (XXX) XXX-XXX, and then a tiny little bit of text that is the first two letters of my moms last name.
and then i click on it and "To;" it shows the number (it is my cousing in california i guess) and then it says 2 more. and i see the image and then - well now i see a really tiny little bit of text over the image that shows my moms full name.
when i reply, i get a response from my cousin in california whose cell number is apparently not in my contacts and i also get a reply from my mom and both come up as separate threads. with my cousins number coming up with a long list of texts that i have had with her in the past due to this same deal and then my moms response comes up under /her/ list of texts.
but the group text shows as being a group but coming from my cousins number.
not sure how to answer your question but i guess you are asking if me and my mom are logging into apple with the same id? she is actually not even on a mac so her texts are not coming from a iphone in any case.
any ideas? it is really bizarre and sort of weird. maybe group texts are just not formatted or displayed well so i am not getting the important information up from in group Messages?

Can I tell from looking at the text usage on my acct if texts are being sent to a blocked number?

I blocked a number on a phone on my plan a couple of days ago, and was wondering if there's a way to tell from looking at the text usage, where it lists the numbers that are being texted, if you can see when the blocked number being texted? I saw that some weird numbers were being texted that started in alot of zeros like "000000###" and a couple times where there was messages received by these weird numbers.

Texts that begin with 00000 with additional numbers are known as short codes. For example messages I receive from Meijer have a code of 0000634537
Look here, Short Codes for example of some. The leading Zeros are removed.

Have I Been Compromised? iYogi Scam!

I did a very stupid thing. In multitasking many issues I needed to talk to Belkin support. I googled them and without paying attention I clicked on the topmost (paid ad) link. Not paying attention I got typical bangalore? tech support. All I wanted was the question How do I log into a router password & ip address answered. The tech was their usually over polite self and said he would fix the issue.
He said he would fix it remotely by logging into my system. Normally I would have said no way but I wasn't thinking. He downloaded a little app onto my system and was able to mess with my system. He needed a password for my router so I gave him one of my many lttle used ones. He kept putting me on hold while he "checked something" I was very careful to watch the screen though. He wanted to restart but I was in the middle of a download from adobe so I told him no. At the end of about 5 minutes he started with a sales pitch of $459 and then took a drop to $169 for a service contract. When I refused and asked him who this company was he said iYogi and tried to convince me they were Belkin authorized TSupport. When I refused to buy, he immediately forced my computer to reboot and then hung up. Upon restarting I noticed that Safari was trying to communicate/log in to something so I basically pulled the ethernet plug. I immediately changed all of my passwords regardless but I feel I may have something aboard my Macbook Pro
1 weeek later my Facebook page is acting weird, loading as text only. When I ran disk repair it gave a time of 1 hour 19 minutes but the bar never moved. Kept seeing Java repairs and some other stuff but when I finally checked permissions had been completed. Decided to run again. This time it said 1 hour 12 minutes but again the progress bar did not change. I did copy some of the Disk repair issues. Can anyone tell from this if it looks like I'm infected?
Suggestions/Solutions welcomed.

My recent experience involved stumbling across iyogi when i was in a panick after my computer played up. Thought iyogi was with Apple as that's how it presented in their ad. I allowed them into my computer. All seemed fine at first. They downloaded Mackeeper which showed the bad shape my computer was in. Then came the fee options (1, 2 or 3 yr) ranging from $330 up to nearly $600. I agreed to take the one year and when it was time to pay, they provided a screen for putting in your details. I said to the guy I did not feel comfortable about providing my details on that form and asked if they had P-Pal. He questioned why I would want to use P-Pal and I told him it is the safest way to do transactions as that's what the ads say on TV. He argued that P-Pal is not safe. I still would not agree to putting me details on the form so he put me through to someone on the phone instead and I gave them my Amex card details. Then they said it wouldn't process as the lines went down and asked if I had another credit card. I got a really bad feeling and told them I did not feel comfortable about giving any further credit card information. They convinced me it was safe and said it would be totally secure if I entered using the keypad of my phone instead of just giving them the number. They said the payment went through and the guy said he was just going to do some tests on my computer. I noticed that they put my on hold and did not talk to me while testing which I thought was strange as whenever Apple has helped me remotely they are always communicating with you while their doing things, telling you what they are doing step by step. He was in there for a long time. A screen came up that seemed to have historical data on it. He then finally came back to me and said he was just going to put me through to another guy who was going to fix the problem. By this stage I had been on the phone for nearly one hour. He put me through to the other guy and the first thing this guy said to me was "what's your mother's maiden name?" Right then I knew this was definately dodgy. I asked him what he needed the name for and he said it was for security purposes,. I argued how it could be when i've never given them my mother's name for any reason since being on the phone. When he said that, I told him I no longer wished to go ahead with the service and that I wanted my card refunded. He tried placating me, saying it's ok, there's nothing to worry about and telling me to calm down. The more he talked the more panicked I became. I demanded he reverse the transaction on my credit card. I demanded he get out of my computer and I told him I sensed the company is dodgy and that I was concerned that they have stolen my personal information. He kept pressing me to continue, until I screamed at him that I will be calling my bank straight away to cancel all of my credit cards and to change all of my banking details AND that I was going to contact the Australian Federal Police to report their company. He finally put me through to someone he said would reverse the transaction. It was a woman and she too asked me for my mother's maiden name "for security purposes." I just screamed at this woman. Told her my mother's maiden name is not relevant to anything and that I wanted my credit card refunded. Unbelievable she kept going on and on and on trying to press me to continue with the service and transaction. It was not until she heard me talking to someone on my other phone (talking to my bank) and she asked who I was talking to, I told her it is my bank and now the bank person on the phone will be witness to the fact that you are refusing to reverse the transaction on a service I decided I didn't want. With the bank hearing everything I told this woman I would be cancelling all banking details and changing everything and reporting their company to the police....... It was ONLY then that she agreed to reverse the transaction.
My computer is 5.5 years old. I have decided to purchase a new one because I simply could never feel safe using that computer again.

My iMac G5 will not run Hardware Test. Please help!!

I need to run a hardware test for two reason:
1. ethernet stopped working [airport does work]
2. if the computer falls asleep it won't wake up
So, I want to find out if it's a hardware or software issue. Problem is, when i try to boot up the Hardware Test nothing happens. The computer starts up normally as if I didn't have the disk in at all.
I am following the instructions in the Hardware test "Read Me" file...put the OS X install disk in & restart holding down the "D" button. The startup screen flashes 2 different colors of grey and then just boots up normally. If I try holding "option" when I restart I get to a screen with the hard drive & the disk as choices to boot, but if I choose the disk I get a really weird screen of text talking about kernel panic & a bunch of stuff I don't know about on top of the grey crash screen telling me to restart.
So after this long-winded question does anyone have any idea what I should do? THANKS!!

Try using Disk Utility:
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
