Weird icon appearing in my dock

Have posted this in the classic forum but not got an answer so am bringing it here.
Something called"HP Inkjet Engine" has suddenly started appearing in my dock at start up of Classic. It is a printer icon with a round white circle and an "I" on it. I can't find startup items to get rid of it, can someone please remind me?
Some info:
It is not in systemprefs/accounts/me/startup items.
The only way I get rid of it is to do a force quit of it.
There seems to be something funny going on with Quark. The only time I launch classic is for quark. Today I just tried to launch classic on it's own and once it had launched it automatically started up quark too and tried to open a document I Iast opened a few months ago, and it quite often does this.
So, how can I get rid of this pesky apparition in my dock?
Thanks!

Kathykate,
Have you tried looking @ HD/9 System Folder/Startup Items. Not sure this is what is making the HP Injet Engine open upon Classic startup but worth a look if you have not already.
I don't use any OS 9 startup items when Classic opens so I'm not sure this is where they would be but worth a look......
Best,
littleshoulders [:-)

That's a sprite file. It's downloaded once for a page and then CSS is used to pick a part of that image. The full display of that image is usually caused by a timeout when downloading the CSS file. If you refresh the page, does it display correctly?
Does the page have any custom JavaScript or custom CSS?

  • Weird Icon Appearing Have Boot

    Hey everyone,
I've been having a weird icon appear on my desktop every time I boot up my computer.
    Here's the icon:
    http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa200/realmvenompics/Picture1-5.png
Not sure where it came from or what it means. I've searched online to see if anyone else has had this problem, but haven't seen anything. I'm not sure if it could be some kind of virus?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks!

Thanks for the help everyone. Taken care of.
Apparently I considered doing Boot Camp and made a hard disk for it, but stopped in the middle and decided not to.
Also just realized I butchered my title to the thread.

When updating my spreadsheets (iWork '08) the umbrella icon appears in the dock, and the software backs up what I've entered. I don't recall setting this up.
    Anyone know what's going on?

Thanks, but I do know what the software is for as I occasionally use it to back up stuff onto my iDisk, but I don't understand why I'm getting backups of stuff like spreadsheets when I haven't set the system up for it.
The only back up I do have set up is for my iPhoto album to back up to my Lacie external hard drive...that's all.

  • A new icon appeared on my dock that replaced the "fox around the globe" icon? Is this some kind of spyware or virus?

I have a Macbook Pro and today I noticed the familiar "fox around the globe" icon was gone from my dock and in it's place was something that looks like a protracting compass, like the letter "A" on a sheet of paper . When I clicked on it, "Firefox" opened? Is that some kind of spyware or virus?

Try the solution from this thread:
    * [[/questions/883573]]
    * Delete the Firefox icon from the dock.
    * Create a new icon by dragging the Firefox application to the dock.

  • Hard drive icon appears as folder icon in dock

When I drag the hard drive icon for any of my hard drives (Mac Pro) to the dock, a folder icon rather than hard drive icon appears in the dock. It functions properly, accessing the full drive, but is harder to distinguish from the other folders in the dock.
Why does this happen? Is there any way to get the hard drive icon to appear in the dock?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
    Why does this happen?
Directories (like the Hard drive) show up as folders when added to the dock.
Is there any way to get the hard drive icon to appear in the dock?
You bet. Make an alias to the Hard Drive (you can put it inside the hard drive itself if you like). Then drag the alias to the dock. It will show up as the drive.
    Hope the helps.

  • Dock.app icon appears in dock!?

Well, I tried customizing my dock with a 3rd party app, but after applying the changes, I noticed that a new icon appeared in my dock - the icon for Dock.app. When I try quitting the app, it has a similar effect to the terminal command "killall Dock" - the dock quits, relaunches, and the icon is still there.

Since then I've tried numerous things:
    1) Deleting the com.apple.dock.plist files.
    2) Uninstalling and restoring the settings in the third party app.
    3) "killall Dock" numerous times.
I've Googled this matter, but obviously, it has been to no avail.
So, my question, of course, is: HOW THE **** DO I GET THE ******* THING OUT OF THERE!
I have done a Time Machine backup, and am contemplating a reinstall, but does time machine keep system preferences as well?
Thank you for your help in advance!

Try this: defaults write /Path_To/Dock.app/Contents/Info LSUIElement 1

  • OSX Mountain Lion: Running app icons do not appear in the dock

It's almost 2-3 days that I have found when I run an application in OS X Mountain Lion, the application icon does not appear in the dock. In other words, the icons in the dock remain unchanged and no other running application icon appear in the dock. Does anyone else have the same issue?
I appreciate your time to answer my question.

Since you're having issues in multiple accounts I suggest you repair the HD and re-install the OS. ML makes the process pretty painless.
Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
    Restore from TM backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X
    Get help online
    Disk Utility
First choose DIsk Utility and run Repair Disk. If you find errors run it until all errors are fixed or it reports "Disk cannot be repaired".
Then, choose Reinstall OS X. This will be an install in place and won't affect any of your own data.

  • Stopping printer icon from appearing in the dock

    Hi,
We have a problem where our students (network homes, managed by WGM) are clicking on the printer icon in the dock once they have sent a job to print, and are pressing the 'Stop Jobs' icon, thus holding up the queue for other students to print.
Is there a way to stop the icon appearing in the dock?
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

    Are you using
    a dedicated print server ?
a print server as part of the server OS ?
or simple printer sharing, maybe Apple Printer Sharing, or Bonjour, or CUPS or another ?
Simple Printer Sharing, or a network printer without dedicated print server software is always going to allow users to stop printing, even if it holds up others.
Even with dedicated print server, you may want to allow users to stop prints - holding up the printer - if they need to change paper, ie. pre-printed stationery, acetate or different paper weights instead of blank 80g/sq m paper.
But a dedicated print server may allow you to restrict job access to only deleting the print job.

  • 2 icons appear at dock when opening FireFox

When I open FirFox version 4.01b, 2 icons appears on my dock! When i close one of them, a message of flash crashing appear, then it reopening the icon by itself again.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == After installing FireFox directly

That usually means that Windows notices that the program isn't responding.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • How do I stop Java processes from appearing on the dock?

I have a Java application that has a fairly extensive build process using ant. It builds fine on OSX, but constantly annoys me. There are a large number of unit tests that run using JUnit, and each test starts in a new Java process. The problem is that when each process starts (and there are about 100 during the course of the build), a new Java icon appears on the dock and stays until the process finishes. First of all, that slows down the build (since it has to do all that graphics work to keep changing the appearance of the dock). Secondly, every time a new process starts, it takes away the keyboard focus from whatever I'm currently working on. I either have to click in the window I want again, or else wait for the process to finish.
On Windows, this is handled with an alternative version of the JVM called "javaw.exe" that does not get a foreground window. However, I see no "javaw" in the Java directory on OSX. Is there some option to start Java with that will stop this dock updating? Note that there are times when I want the dock to be updated (when I'm running a "normal" Java app).

Even when the Guest Account / Access is disabled, the login option / and lock screen, still have a guest login.
This is because in Preferences/ Security & Privacy/General the bottom item is turned on.

  • Have just purchased Face Time and it now appears on the dock but I'm unable to open it.  Error message tells me there is an internal Face Time error. error.

Have just purchased Fac Time.  it is downloaded and the icon appears on the dock.  When I try to open it i get the message  "An internal Face Time error has ocurred".  Any suggrstions for a novice.

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

  • HT203421 I have recently purchased some apps from the app store and after downloading them, the icon that appears in the dock changes to a different icon. It is now the same icon appearing on all newly downloaded apps.  Does anyone know what is happening

I have recently purchased some apps from the app store and after downloading them, the icon that appears in the dock changes to a different icon. It is now the same icon appearing on all newly downloaded apps.  Does anyone know what is happening here? Even updating an older game app resulted in the original game icon changing to the new identical icon that all new apps are appearing with.  This new icon is like a page with a ruler, pencil and paintbrush. Any tips on how to stop this or how to revert to the icon as it appears on the app store would be appreciated.

    2. For about 10 seconds
    3. Until you see the Apple logo (very important)
    4. Ignore the red slider

  • My itunes icon is not appearing in my dock

My itunes icon is no longer appearing in my dock and when I plug my iTouch in the only thing that comes up is iPhoto.  What should I do?  I am on 10.5.8.  I know I know.  It is way past time for an upgrade..... Any help would be greatly appreciated......

Maybe your iTunes is on "off" in the parental controls. If you turn it off, it won't show in your dock.
