Weird icon on my applications bar

I have this weird icon on my applications bar at the bottom of my computer screen. It sits in the background and I can't highlight it. It looks like the letter M inside a circle or maybe two adjacent arrows pointing up. Underneath the circle is a yellow arrow pointing downward. What does this mean?

Hi Nomvuyo, and Welcome to "Discussions"!
"...my applications bar at the bottom of my computer screen..."
I'm guessing that you mean the Dock.
Are you sure that the icon is in the Dock, and not behind it?
From the Blue Apple menu, select Dock > Turn Hiding On. Or use Command + Option + D keys.
If the icon is now visible, it was behind the Dock, and you can now move it.
If it is really in the Dock, you should be able to eliminate it by navigating to
HD > Users > Your Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.dock.plist : Move this file to the Trash.
Restart the computer.
You will now have a Default Dock, and will have to put back any extra icons that you may have placed there.
Good Luck!

  • Problem with icons in the application bar (Photoshop CS4)

    My computer's OS is WinXP Pro SP3.
    I just now noticed a problem with all icons in the application bar in PS CS4 (v. 11.0.1).
    When I bring mouse over icons (except for zoom level icon), all icons turn into blank (white) boxes.
    For "Arrange Documents" bar, when I click on its blank icon, the top two columns are empty but show the the rest of three columns.
    Please advise me how to fix this problem.  I hope to avoid uninstalling -reinstallinlg.  Thanks.

    ATI no longer supports your card so I don't think you will see any updated drivers from them to correct your problem. You might want to look into investing in a newer card.

  • Missing icons in application bar Bridge CS4

    I couldn't find an answer to this in documentation or forums; hopefully this is not redundant.
    Using CS4, both on a G5 machine with Leopard and a MacIntel machine with Snow Leopard.
    Frequently when I use bridge (I always have it open), the whole section of icons in the Application bar on the right (Sort by filename, new folder, trash can, etc) are gone.  Everything else is the same.  It isn't switched to compact mode.  I have to reset the workspace to get them back.
    Am I hitting some weird short-cut inadvertently or doing something else to make this happen?
    thanks

    It is an unsolved mystery that happens every now and then, sometimes not for
    months, sometimes every week.
    To cure go to the menu window and put a checkmark before the Pathbar, that
    should bring them back

    How do I delete icons of old applications in the menu bar? I've tried holding down all three keys, control, option and command as well as every combination of them in twos and three and then clicking on the menu bar icon I want to remove and I only get the option to use the software, not to delete it.

    Hold command and drag them off the Menu Bar, drag them at least a couple of inches. (or 50mm)

  • Why has my safari icon disappeared from the applications bar after the recent software update?

    Everything was working perfectly until I uploaded the most recent software update. When I restarted my laptop I found that the Safari icon had disappeared from my applications bar.  If I go to my 'recent places' and click on Safari it then reappears but only until I close the laptop down as the next time I start it up, it's nowhere to be seen.  Can anyone help?

    by applications bar you mean "dock"? After you click on recent places and start safari it will reappear in the dock and at this point you will want to control + click (right click) on the SAFARI icon and hover to options, make sure that "KEEP IN DOCK" has a check mark next to it. If it does not, click that option. Now it will keep the Safari Icon in your dock.

  • Menu bar shows icon instead of application name

    For an unknown reason, my menu bar now shows an icon for the application in the open window instead of the name of the application.  For instance, when I switch to the Finder, the smiley face is in the menu bar next to the Apple menu.  How can I return to have the application name shown?

  • Application Bar only shows Bridge icon?

    Hey gang,
    I run CS4 Design Premium. It just occurred to me that the Application Bar doesn't show icons for any other suite application except Bridge. Shouldn't it also show the icons for Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat? InCopy anyone? Is that customizable in some secret way?
    Seems that those would be desirable on something called an "Application Bar", no?

    I frequently am seized with the desire to go directly to Photoshop and Illustrator straight out of InDesign. If there is a button to blast off to Bridge (a software I don't leave running all the time, on account of its RAM appetite), why wouldn't there also be an icon to zip me over to Photoshop and Illustrator? Seems that the *Application Bar* should have something to do with accessing applications, no?

  • How can I remove an application icon from the loc. bar and prevent it from auto loading?

    I don't know the "lingo" of how-to's with Firefox; but I subscribed to www.catalogchoice.org. Somehow, the icon appears to the right of my print icon in the location bar and automatically pops-up when I go to any website. I can't find how to remove it from the toolbar and remove it from Firefox. I cancelled my subscription with them but continue to have this annoyance.

  • How to replace the icon in the title bar and minimized window

    I am not sure if this is a Swing question. But since nobody answered it in the Java Programming forum, let me place it here:
    I would like to set my own icon in the title bar and in the minimized window of my java application, replacing the java coffee cup icon.
    I am using:
    frame.setIconImage(new ImageIcon("image.gif").getImage())
    as was suggested previously in the Java Programming forum at:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=31&threadID=5212059
    This does create the icon in both places. However, it only works when I run the program from JBuilder 2006. It doesn't work if I run the program from the .jar or the .exe file.
    How can I make it work for my .jar and .exe file?
    Please help! Thanks!

    It doesn't work if I run the program from the .jar...working example for a .jar
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    class Testing
      public void buildGUI()
        JFrame f = new JFrame();
        Image img;
        try
          java.net.URL url = new java.net.URL(getClass().getResource("Save.gif"), "Save.gif");//correct capitalization required
          if (url != null)
            img = javax.imageio.ImageIO.read(url);
            f.setIconImage(img);
        catch(Exception e){}//do nothing - default will display
        f.setSize(200,200);
        f.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
        f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
        f.setVisible(true);
      public static void main(String[] args)
        SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable(){
          public void run(){
            new Testing().buildGUI();
    }

  • Firefox Icon Replaced by Application icon after crash & repair, where can I get a copy compatible with Mac OSX 10.2.4?

    Recoveryng from a disk crash and Firefox icon in the genie bar vanished after running MAC Disk Utility and now has the "Application" (the A formed by a pen, pencil & ruler) icon instead. Will not launch. Need a version that will run Mac OS X 10.2.4. Is there page on this site to get a compatible version or some wherelse I can get one? Have very some old .dmg copies of earlier version 2.0.0.7 but can not find more recent copies or the one I was running befor the crash. I know , I know I need to update my old G4 but for economic reasons ( I do not have the $$) I can not do so now.

    The last release to work on the old OSX 10.'''2'''.x was the old EOL Firefox 2.0.0.20
    ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/2.0.0.20/mac/en-US/Firefox%202.0.0.20.dmg
    Firefox 3.0, 3.5, 3.6 required Mac OS X 10.4 and later. Then for Firefox 4.0 and newer one needs '''Intel''' hardware and OSX 10.5+.

  • Blank icon appearing in applications folder

    Hi,
    I recently installed Skype and Miro Video Player on my iMac. Whilst installing, it asked me to click and drag the icon into the applications folder, which I did, and I heard the notification sound as if it was a success.
    However, when I opened the applications folder on the dock bar thing at the bottom of my screen, the new programme was there without the icon. Just a no entry circle.
    If I click that icon, the programme opens properly and the correct icon even appears in the dock bar at the bottom, but still the application folder has no icon!
    Its not a major problem, but is very frustrating!! I don't want to install any more programmes until its sorted.
    Can anyone help???
    Thanks
    Phil

    Try these; one may work.
    1) Do a Get Info on the program in the Applications folder. Is the icon shown in the upper right of the Get Info window the correct one?
    If it is the correct one, then click on it to select it and then press Command-C (Copy) followed by Command-V (Paste). If that fixed the icon on the application, you're done.
    If it is not the correct one, then click it to select it, then open the Edit menu - if the item Clear is available (not grayed out) select it. If that fixed the icon on the application, you're done.
    2) The icon shown on the Dock is an alias. Since it shows the correct icon, try making an alias to the program that's resident in the Applications folder.
    If that alias displays the correct icon, copy its icon and then paste it onto the original program using the Get Info windows for each.
