Weird image on desktop

So I've got an external Lacie drive. When I plugged it in this evening instead of showing up as a drive on the desktop, it shows up as a avi image. I went into disk utility and the dirve is mounted. I looked at it in the HD and it has the pretty little disk image there. All the files are there.
It just shows up as an avi icon, as of tonight.
How do I fix this? It disturbs my mac-zen mode.
ETA: Fixed it. Amazing things happen when I hit restart.

Nearly, Jon;
Hold control and scroll backwards, or ⌥⌘8 to turn zoom off.
I think Jon is confusing it with colour reversal - ⌃⌥⌘8.
Both can also be turned off in System Preferences > Universal Access > seeing tab.
I use both facilities daily.

  • Having major issues with Adobe Media Encoder (AME) - exporting with weird image flickering/colour anomalies, crashing regularly, freezing during encode...!

    Hi Guys
I am having some real issues with Adobe Media Encoder (AME) at the moment.  It appears that I am unable to encode an h.264 for Vimeo from a Premiere Pro Project file at the moment without at least some weird image issues that are not supposed to be there.  These include weird flickering, colour changes, artefacts etc.  This is if I am lucky...often I am unable to get the process to complete as the application either crashes and tells me there has been a problem or it simply freezes and I have to force quit the application and often restart my machine.
The problem seems to not to just be with h.264 for the web encodes but also with BluRay h.264 as well. As yet I haven't seen if there is a problem with MPEG-2 for DVD so I will check this out too!
Does anyone else see this happening or does anyone know what might be the problem?
I thought the Premiere Pro project might have been corrupt so tried a different project but the same issues were happening here too.
Any help would be really gratefully received.
    Cheers
EDIT - I have just found this online which is exactly the problem I am having! Thanks a bloody bunch Apple! 10.9.3 causing headaches for Mac Pro users | MacIssues

Agreed, I now have a project to GET OUT, and AME crashes consistently 1/3 into the render. It appears to halt all processing after (real time) 00:02:30
Am seriously considering uninstalling CC as I am beginning to find other issues in some apps, and going back to CS6/MC just so I can get work out. Durn it Adobe this is AWFUL!!
Alright, let's try to be constructive instead of throwing rocks... but the frustration level is high, and I have material on deadline. Let's get with this, guys...
    What OS Win7, 64-bit
What version of AME/PPro (Please be specific by getting the full version number in the About Adobe Media Encoder screen) 8.2.0.54 Ppro: 8.2.0 (65)
When is it crashing (Again, the more detail here about where it was in the encoding process the better) roughly 1/3 into the sequence, always on exactly the same frame - tried replacing the clip with something different to see if it was a timeline error, and NO EFFECT.
What is your source (PPro project or media file (what kind?)) PPro
If the source if a PPro project, does it work when exporting directly from PPro? NO
What format are you exporting to? H.264, QT, WM, tried everything my client can play.
Do other formats work? MPEG2, QuickTime, etc? NO
Have you tried with GPU rendering on? How about turning it off by switching to Software-only mode? Mine doesn't have any choice, it's software-only.
Have you tried disabling Native Sequence Loading? (AME Preferences: General > Enable Native Sequence Loading) No effect
Other things I tried: uninstalling/reinstalling AME, setting cache to a fast local disk.

  • FsCacheddata?? Why are there weird images in here?

I was looking through the fsCacheddata folder on my Mac, and saw soo many weird images from, let's say, explicit websites. I have gone on them before, but did not look at half of the stuff that was on there. Why is it stored in the folder? I'm a little freaked out... other people use my computer. Does that mean they're looking at that stuff, or it just got linked to the site and stored on my computer?
Thanks! Sorry I don't know how this stuff works. :/

Does that mean they're looking at that stuff
Yes. If you don't want them to do that, don't let them use your computer.

  • Weird image in System preferences

    Hi,
I have a weird image in the System Preferences. It is actually an image of a switch on top of the Startup Disk icon. How do I remove the weird image? I have tried to restart my Mac and update the software but that does not help. Please help.

I have had this pop up from time to time. It turns out to be a corrupted sys pref or cache file.
It is easy enough to fix. Close your system preferences and delete these two files -
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
This cleared it up for me and should do the same for you.

  • Funky Weird image on 23" Cinema Display; where can I find a service manual?

    Hi all,
I bought a 23" Cinema HD Display 'as is' on eBay; the seller had reported that its power light was flashing several times. I found the support article pertaining to this. Unfortunately I had no way to test it at home because it did not come with the power brick, so I did the next best thing. I took it to my local Apple Store and one of the employees hooked it up with one of their demo machines to see what would happen. It powered on, all right, but displayed this funky weird image where it was mostly black with a striped green edge and this very thin jagged strip that looked like the outline of a mountain going from left to right across the screen.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on here--bad inverter board, or what? Also, is there a service manual out there I could download for this display? I have experience working on a wide variety of Macs, from the SE/30 and Classic on up to the newer Powermacs--replacing motherboards, hard drives, floppy drives, video cards, etc., etc., but have never worked on an LCD display or ANY monitor for that matter....
    Many thanks for your help!
    Sally

    Hi-
Here is how to take it apart.
That's about as far as I can get you. Would look for the obvious loose connection, burnt component on board, burnt trace, etc.

  • Weird symbols on desktop

Over the last little while, Ive noticed these weird litle symbols showing up on my desktop (mostly red, sometimes blue). See image. Anyone know what it is, whats causing it? They almost look liiek chinese characters?

I can see them pretty well... looks as if you've a screen or graphics card glitch of some sort. You would need to take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP to have the techs run diagnostic tests on the machine to find the root cause (might be something as simple as a loose connector).

  • Icons for images on desktop do not update when edited in Preview

I didn't know what topic to put this in but I guess I consider this a Finder issue.
Here's the problem: In both Leopard and Tiger, when I edit something in Preview and save it the little icon preview image on my desktop (you know, above the file name) does not change, even after I restart. I know the world isn't going to end because of it but it has gotten to the point where I'll edit things in Photoshop instead of Preview just to get the stupid icon to be accurate, otherwise I don't know if I've worked on a picture already or not. It would save me from a lot of time wasted booting up Photoshop just to crop an image.
I also noticed that the Spotlight comments (when I use "get info" on the file) still describe the picture in its larger format before cropping. It just doesn't seem to update itself. The image I am looking at as an example is a PNG right now but I'm sure it has happened with jpegs as well. (generally I'll just go into Photoshop in the end and save from there to update the icon out of frustration)
Can this be fixed? It would certainly make me enjoy using Preview a little more.
I thought this would go away with a Leopard upgrade but it doesn't seem to.

Is there a way to remove or replace the preview image manually, then?
select the files with custom icons and enter commandoptioni.
in the resulting info window select the little icon in the top left corner and press delete.

  • Dragging images to desktop unpredictable.

    MacPro 3.1 (early 2008)
    (3) NEC Monitors - all ATI Video Cards.
Last week i made the jump from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion via Clean Install. Other than having to give up a few apps that do not have an upgrade path, everything has been doing remarkably well so far (much less painful than expected).
One anoying thing I have noticed is that when I drag an image from any application to the desktop, I cannot predict where the icon will show up (i.e. could be on any of my three screens anywhere)? In the past any time I dragged say an attachment from MAIL or say an Image from a Safari Google serach to the desktop, the icon would always appear right under where I released the mouse button. Now I can drag it to the middle of screen 2 and it may pop up in the lower right corner of screen 3 - you just never know? Even sucessive drags of images back-to-back scatters them across all my monitors.
Am I the only one experiencing this?
    Any ideas?

Do you get a real PNG file or a JPG file that has a .png file extension?

  • Images on desktop not showing thumbnail preview.  Suggestions?

When I save images to my desktop, the image doesn't have a preview thumbnail image.  This just started about two weeks ago.  I'm running OS X 10.9.1 on my MBA I have not loaded any new software.  It doesn't matter if it's a png file or a jpg file.  The interesting thing is that after a reboot, the thumbnail image is there.  But...  When I add a new image to the desktop I get this image again until the next reboot.
Here are a few at once
Any suggestions on how I might correct this?  Thank you in advance.  Jeff

    Hello Jeff,
It sounds like you are saving imgaes to your desktop but the thumbnails arent being generated automatically. Restarting seems to fix the issue for files since the last restart, but the issue persists with new messages. I had a few thoughts for things for you to try. First perform a Safe Boot and then retest it and see if that helps:
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), follow these steps.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key.
The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
After the logo appears, you should see a progress bar during startup. This indicates that your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without holding any keys during startup.
If the issue persists, next I would try verifying the disk and repairing any errors found, if any.

  • Using screensaver images as desktop background

how can I find the images from the screensavers that came with the mbp? I would like to use them as my desktop background.

To be clear, on a Mac, a "screen saver" is the moving images (or static) that display on a screen after a few minutes of inactivity, if so setup to do that.
A "desktop picture" is the non-moving image you setup for the background of your screen. In the PC world, it's called a "wallpaper" and some mistakenly call it a "screen saver"-- I know, because a lot of PC users I know call it such.
So two answers to your question:
    1) If you are trying to find the desktop picture to change your background, go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES > DESKTOP & SCREEN SAVER and then choose the DESKTOP PICTURE tab and select away. You can even drag and drop a photo/image to the box on the screen to set it as your Desktop Picture.
    2) If you want to use an image from a screen saver on the Mac, you can, while the screen saver is active, take a screenshot of the screen saver by pressing the following key commands: SHIFT + COMMAND + 3. The image will appear on your desktop to which you can then drag and drop it to the box in the Desktop Picture tab in the previous instruction.
Note that you can even create a folder of collected images and select that folder in the System Preferences pane of Desktop & Screen Saver and all the images will be available to choose.
    Now...
If your question was "How can I make my screen saver as my desktop picture background?" this would be your answer:

  • Drag and save images onto desktop

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed that when they drag an image from the internet to save onto the desktop, it will automatically save it in grid and you're not able to save it away from the other icons which usually line up from the right-hand side? Before a recent re-install at the end of Oct '09, I was able to save the images anywhere on the desktop in order to find them more easily than having them bunched in with the already organized icons. My folder settings for desktop do not have snap to grid or keep arranged checked.

Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks' for Leopard.

  • Can't copy images to desktop ("Item busy")

I'm trying to copy photos from an album in iPhoto 5 to the desktop, but I can't because I get the following error message:
The selected items cannot all be put in the same location because at least one of them named "DSC00003.JPG" is busy
I'm able to copy entire albums on to the desktop, so it looks like some sort of album corruption.
I've double-clicked the mentioned locked image (DSC00003.JPG) which looks fine.
But still thinking that this image might be the culprit I mark off everything except that image in the album, then drag the contents to the desktop's folder. Same error message, but with "DSC00002.JPG" being busy this time.
    Any solutions?
And more importantly, what has caused this problem in the first place?
It's worth mentioning that I've tried all the troubleshooting tricks that I know of:
    -logged out, then in again
    -restarted the computer
-turned the computer off, then powered it up again
-checked and repaired file-permissions (using "Disk utility" as well as "Applejack")
None of this has fixed my problem.
    Powerbook G4 (1.67GHz, Superdrive)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I am not sure, but I am thinking some of the photos
in the album have the same file name so you get that
    error message.
I did some further investigation, and I believe you're right because I found a few files with the same names, but it appears that there are two naming schemes in iPhoto:
    1) If you click on the "i" (information) icon at the bottom left of the iPhoto window there's information about the photo, among them is "Title". This seems to be changeable
    2) Even though I changed the name of the duplicates (using the method above) I could find, I looked closely and found out that I had given a few photos unique, descriptive names (as opposed to something like "img_00023.jpg"), but I still get that complaint.
So, is there a way I can change the actual filename? I know I'm not supposed to dig into iPhoto's files from the Finder, so I'm not going to mess around with that, but hope I can fix it from within iPhoto itself.

  • Time Machine placing multiple disk images on Desktop

    Hi,
I have recently set-up a 2TB Time Capsule for one of my clients.
Each time Time Machine does an hourly backup - it places a Disk Image icon on the desktop called e.g.'Backup of Anya' - which is basically the sparse disk image mounting from the Time Capsule on the Desktop temporarily whilst TM backs up to it - the problem however is the disk image does not auto-unmount when completed ...
An hour later it will mount another Disk Image backup on the desktop - and so on and so on and so on ...
by the end of the day there are close to 10 unmounted Time Machine backup disks on the desktop - and subsequently in each machines 'Devices' panel in the Finder - all across the network ...
Does anyone know why or how this is happening?
It's my understanding the the image should automatically unmount when TM has completed its hourly backup.
    I'm stumped ...
