Weird incident with DVD drive

Weird thing happened last night... was taking out a DVD from the drive and a small thin donut shapped rubbery/cloth-like thing (best I can describe it) came out with it... any ideas what that could be and if that's going to affect operation of my computer? I've been able to write a DVD since it happened, but have also had a couple fail during writing.
Thanks.
PowerBook 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Sounds like some part of the DVD drive is falling to pieces. Either that or a copy-protected ring fell off a copy-protected disk. Hopefully it is the latter. I'd take it to a service center to be sure.

  • BSOD on X300 with DVD drive

    All,
I have a X300, XP SP3, SATA AHCI, latest BIOS and drivers.  When the removable DVD drive is not present, the machine runs fine.  But if the DVD drive is inserted, with or without a disk, the machine consistently BSODs within 10 minutes.  Error code 1000007e/c0000005...
If I change SATA to compatibility mode with DVD drive plugged in, the machine BSODs while "Found new hardware".
    Any ideas?

  • Problems with dvd-drive

    Hi.
I have a Lite-on cd/dvd-drive, which writes and reads discs. About a week ago i tried to burn a dvd, and noticed that my drive is not detected by Brasero. I tried other programs, and same thing with them (gnomebaker detected my drive, but it did not manage to burn).
Then I tried to read some dvds, but i noticed that my drive doesn't read cds or dvds anymore. I don't know if this problem has been since i changed to arch, because i don't use my drive so much.
    Dmesg says next:
    sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 48x/48x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
    Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
    sr 1:0:1:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
So I believe that my drive is detected by the system, but some drivers or configs are failing. I tried to change my fstab and added myself to optical- and storage-groups, but no difference. What else I can do to find and solve the problem?
I Also found out, that i can't use usb mass storage devices. According to dmesg, usb storages are detected, but i can't see them anywhere.

    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks
ps. How can i change ide-scsi to ide-cd for my dvd/cd-drive?

I have only one drive, which both reads and writes. The drive is not dead, since i can boot from LiveCd.
Edit: Apparently I can't use LiveCds no more, or boot from any cds. So I think my drive is busted

  • Trying to install iwork '09 from dvd on new imac with no dvd drive.....iwork is brand new (bought off ebay) in unopened box....I have at my disposal an older imac with dvd drive and a 16GB thumb drive...what is best way to load iwork on the new imac?

bought my mom a new imac this xmas...didn't realize it has no dvd drive....just picked up a new unopened version of iwork '09 for her to use off of ebay....need to get it loaded on the new dvddriveless imac......I have an imac at my house with a drive and a thumb drive i could bring over to her house if I could somehow burn an image of the iwork dvd on the thumb drive...is this possible?  is there a better solution other than buying an external dvd drive?

First use Disk Utilty to make a disk image of the iWork disc on your iMac. Then there are two easy ways to install on your mothers new iMac. One is to copy to your USB thumb drive, visit your mother and install from the thumb drive. The other is to use a free upload and download service like www.wetransfer.com. Upload the .dmg disk image via www.wetransfer.com, then your mother downloads and installs. After installation you'll need to update iWork for Mountain Lion compatibility.

  • Problem with DVD drive, please help

Hi people, please read the whole story and give me some advice.
Last Friday, took the train from Stoke on trent to Birmingham to get to Apple at the bullring as the DVD drive is not recognising DVDs. Everytime I put a dvd in, the blank dvd message comes up! They told me they can replace the drive, but it will take a few days unless I pay for Apple pro care, as I needed it done quick, I paid, I roamed around the shops waiting for the phone call that it is ready. After an hour, got a call saying that the NEW DRIVE they have in stock is faulty, so I came back, they told me that they will call me when they get another one in stock. Went back home after having wasted a day in birmingham.
Monday, got a message on my voicemail, the drive is in stock, pop in and we'll replace it. As I was working all week, I thought I'd give them a ring to arrange for the repair on Saturday where they can fit me. I tried to call all week, THE BULLRING STORE DOES NOT ANSWER THEIR PHONES!
So, I popped in today, they said that they cannot do it today as they were busy. I asked to see the store manager and explained to her the situation and how annoying it is not to be able to get in touch with the store. She told me she'll get it done before closing time.Luckily by 2 pm it was ready, picked up , hopped back on the train to stoke. Got home tried a DVD, it works, then suddenly STOPS WORKING.
The Macbook now doesn't recognise the drive at all, and I've got a DVD stuck in it.
I have wasted another day in birmingham + train fares + Apple pro crae (79.99). I am very frustrated, I am now having second thoughts on the quality of apple products. If the matsui drives are crap, why don't they get another manufacturer to make it for them.
I would appreciate your help on what should my next move be, I cannot keep loosing my time like this, I paid good money for this kit and I need it to work.

Have a read of this article. You definantely should be able to get a full refund (whether they will do that is a different matter).
If you don't ask (firmly) then you don't get. A 12 month warranty is there for a reason so use it. I can't believe they've actually charged you for work already within the 12 month period. I have also being trying ot look for an article about claiming unfair travel to and from a shop for repairs but I cannie find it.....
Would you consider asking for a replacment laptop. From what I have read on the forums, if you call apple they will be more likely to help out, maybe give them a try and avoid Birmingham all together.
ps, i'm from Stoke too -Small world eh?

  • Kernel 2.6.27: Problems with DVD drive/nVidia MCP51

I have sent the following message to linux-ide, but so far it has not been answered. Perhaps someone on this forum has some insights.
After upgrading from 2.6.26.5 to 2.6.27.4, my DVD drive started having problems during boot time. Here is the relevant part from dmesg:
ata2: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)

    [continue ad inifitum....]
The drive is reported as "HL-DT-ST DVD+/-RW GSA-T11N, A103", connected to an nVidia MCP51 controller. Googling around, I found similar complaints in the past for other nVidia controllers using the sata_nv driver (though I couldn't find anything about the MCP51). I tried compiling the version of sata_nv that comes with 2.6.26.5, but that did not solve my problems.
I can provide further details if necessary.

This might/might not help.  After upgrading to 2.6.27, both my wireless card and nvidia drivers failed.  I ran "depmod" as root in the console and now everything runs.  Might want to give that a try.

  • New 27" iMac; Glitch with DVD drive

Just got my new refurbished 27" iMac yesterday(my first mac computer ever) and after starting up and playing around few things, I tried to play DVD and it would not accept any DVDs including the setup dvd that came with iMac.
After talking with tech support they asked me to powered down and take out the power plug for few second and restarting the mac solved the issue with DVD.
Not sure how did powering down and restarting helped with DVD in this case. Should I be worried about this DVD drive?
    Thanks,
    Jeegar.

I guess at least it is now working - I have just bought one myself and just been shipped. First refurb Mac i have ever bought so fingers crossed...

  • Problems with DVD drive showing up in BIOS

Hello everyone. I am just after getting my MSI 915P Combo mainboard. The problem is i have one DVD-RW drive which i used to load on the windows XP pro onto the computer.  When i restarted the computer a message came up checking for new devices and that was fine it found the NEC ND-3540A DVD drive and said that it was a none raid device. So i went to the bios and turned off the raid settings.  I then restarted again and checked the bios it didn't pick up the DVD drive and neither did windows XP. I have the DVD drive set to secondary master as i have a sata hard drive configured. Hopefully someone has some ideas

You need to connect your DVD on the blue one as the VIA RAID chip doesn't support CD-ROM or DVD and only HDD. If currently there is a HDD connected to IDE1 and set it as Master, you can set the DVD as slave, of course, it would be better to put the DVD to IDE1 as Master and put your PATA HDD to IDE2 or 3. If so, you need to install the VIA RAID driver when installing OS to the PATA HDD. During the installation, you should be able to see the message "Press F6 if you need to install third party SCSI or RAID driver", then prmptly press F6 to load driver. Before this, you need to copy the VIA RAID driver to a floppy disk.

  • Help with dvd drive - region code error

Hi, I really need to change the drive region code on my Ibook G4 (OS X 10.4.10) back to Region 2. I'm allowed to change it one last time.
But the trouble is, when I try and change it and click 'set drive region' it just comes up with an error message -70001, 'There was a problem changing the drive region code.'
I've reset the PMU and PRAM/NVRAM but it still does it.
Can anybody help me at all? It's driving me mad, I was banking on being able to change it back to my Region one last time...

Insert a DVD which is set to play in only one region; if you try using up your last change with a DVD that can play in some but not all regions, that error message will appear. Many DVDs which are set to play in region 2 will also play in region 4.

  • Weird Problem with Firewire Drive on 17" MBP

I have an external firewire drive that worked great on my 15" MBP and with any other computer I have never had any problems. The problem occurs when I plug the drive into my 17" MBP with the magsafe connected, it just wont mount, but as soon as I unplug the magsafe the drive mounts. Really weird. Anyone have a similar problem? I am going to the Apple Store and see if I can duplicate the problem.

I'd backup your files if you can. If the drive is failing then the advise you've gotten is good advise. You can try software recovery if you are unable to use the drive:
    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
If the above is not possible then sending the drive to a data recovery service may be your only option, and they are very expensive.

  • Weird problem with NTFS drive

I went on and compiled my own kernel, it's not the first time i do it, but what happened to me yesterday was so unusual.
i put the kernel compilation at night, i went to sleep, the morning i had the package ready, no errors what so ever, then i went and restarted the computer, now after the kernel loads i get an error when it tries to auto mount that ntfs drive, well i thought i made a mistake in the kernel, but no, the reason it got an error was it could not find the UUID.
well, i went and tried using blkid on it, nothing was returned.
then tried to mount the partition manually, it said it contains an error and i need to run chkdsk.
i tried using the ntfsfix, nothing helped, still complains to run chkdsk.
well, tried to log in into windows from grub (nothing was changed there and it worked as before), i got it does not recognize that system file. although fdisk -l shows NTFS!
I went far and created a bootable rescue cd with some tools (windows based), it recognized the drive, but not as NTFS, just as an unformatted drive, and it have 100% freespace, this is so weird, i really don't care of the files that were there, it was just an winxp installation with outlook (and the emails are kept on the server) but what i really care is that it could be that ntfs-3g unmounted the partition some how in a wrong way causing the partition to fail? (sounds weird to me..)
i also ran chkdsk but the chkdsk could not check that partition as it said it can't access it, unknown file systems.
Lucky nothing worthy to me was deleted because i had nothing in there, but i still feel something bad happened to there, it's must have been ntfs-3g because i didn't use anything else on that partition and also i didn't use the partition at ALL (no copy/del , etc..) since the computer was up.
I tried many ways saving the partition, but no luck, everything i tried complained about wrong fs system (including windows tools).
Well, more space to archlinux now

If you have a two devices banged out, deleted them and restart.  It should auto detect the devices and load the driver.    I had a problem like this.  That worked for me.
What kind of hard drive is it.

I am currently having problems burning files onto my dvd rw disc. Everytime i try to burn files onto my dvd disc then verify it, it comes up with the I/O error, uncorrectable error  message. Is there a way to fix this? Help greatly appreciated.

  • [MSI E350IS-E45] Problem with DVD drive

    Hello my friends.
I just bought this little board to make a HTPC for my daddy and Im getting a hard time with it.
I installed everything fine and installed windows 7, via USB flashdrive and when i rebooted I tried to put the CD with drivers to finish installation, but whenever i put any cd inside this drive the computer boots.
If I start the computer with CD inside the drive, it will just hang with a 98 error code down and just wont start the windows.
The computer have the following parts:
    - Spire PowerCube 300w (http://www.spirecoolers.com/main/product_detail.asp?ProdID=826)
    - MSI E350IS-E45
    - 2x2gb OCZ SIGNATURE DDR3 1333MHZ, configured as 1066mhz.
    - 1x OCZ AGILITY 60GB SSD
I tried change the sata cable from one place to another. This psu is very good and have enough power to this setup, this psu was tested with a core i3 system (wich by the way consumes way more power than this HUDSON guy).
Please, dont lie to me... Im on this busines for almos 2 decades and I know that there is something very odd happening here, I just downloaded a new bios version and will try to do a bios update later when i get home to see if this problem is solved.
    Thanx in advance!

First of all, I would redo the cooler paste.
It's my experience that the installed thermal-pads are no good.
I have the E350IA-E45 myself and I removed the pads and the temperature dropped significantly.
I informed MSI about this and they are currently retesting the cooling solution, removing the pads for grease can lower temps as much as 10C!! (or more)...
As for the PSU, my system with 4! 1TB harddisks and full load hardly uses more then 55W tops, that PSU should not be a problem.
However, do consider the drive can be faileing, OR the drive is bootable and crashes before Windows can start.
I have noticed that our Forum-flasher crashes too with exactly the same symptom.
Anyway, what do you mean the computer boots if you put a CD in? Is that after or before Windows is loaded?
Because before it can mean the CD is bootable, if it's after Windows is loaded it probably means the drive is bad.
In any case, do check the thermal pad under the cooler, see in the BIOS how hot the CPU is.
