Weird iPhoto 09 Behavior on new i7

All,
I have been plugging away on my new i7 and I started having some problems with iPhoto. I tried to reinstall it with the bundled software disc but still getting them. What happens is I have been trying to go through my Photos section and delete bad photos. At first everything was OK but now when I delete a photo it does not go away until I open trash and there it is, then I empty trash and go back to photos section to find an outline where the photo used to be. So I delete that then go back to the trash which has the outline there now, then I have to delete that????????? Then sometimes it just freezes, will not empty trash and I have to force quit. I even did a clean install of 10.6.2 and still the same. I ran disc utility repaired permissions etc!!! I am running the latest version 8.1.1
Thanks for any help!!!
Rob

While you're rebuilding select the last three options as well.

i am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier photo please help me to recover my photos

    Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • How can I access my old iphoto libary on my newer laptop? I have a new iphoto folder on my laptop so I don't want to lose my current photos. I just want to add more.

How can I access my old iphoto libary on my newer laptop?
I have a new iphoto folder on my laptop so I don't want to lose my current photos. I just want to add more.

    Do the following:
rename the old library to something other that iPhoto Library.
copy the library to the Pictures folder on your new laptop.
launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select the old library to open it and convert it to the newer version.
Note:  if the older version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on it before opening with iPhoto on your new laptop.
If you want to merge the two libraries into one library and keep the edited versions, keywords, titles, etc. you'll need to use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to do the merging.

  • Can i import "all images" into iphoto to create a new library?

somehow about 4000 photos out of 10000 disappeared when I moved to the newest iphoto and attached my external hard drive with the old iphoto library to it and switched between libraries using alt to open it.  i was unable to get iphoto to see the missing 4000 even though they were in all images.
i went to all images on the new mac and dragged it into iphoto and created a new library.
it seemed to work but then a few hours later when i looked at my photos they are all just faces!!!!!!!! and in all images the photos are all just faces too.
    what on earth is this?

i am trying to understand why so many of my photos in the library seem to be just faces
Because you imported the face thumbnails into iPhoto as noted several times
    As My first post explained
All images is just that - a list of all images on your computer - all photos (two or three versions of each in iPhoto), the faces thumbnails, and probably icons and other images that have nothing to do with iPhoto
No bug - simply user error
Yes you can create a new library from the photos in the masters folder
But first try to rebuild the database again - if that does not work this time download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and use it's rebuild command and see how it does - that will create a totally new liberary leaving your existing one untouched so you can go back to it if needed

  • IPhoto library moved to new external HD- now doesn't show up in iPhoto

Hello- Yesterday I successfully added a Maxtor One Touch II external hard drive to my system, and partitioned it for a bootable backup and extra storage. I did backup the entire computer at that time.
Today I moved my iPhoto library (my first step in making some room on my internal hard drive) to the extra storage partition on the external. Everything went fine, I was able to work with my photos and made cd backups of about 2/3 of the library. Since all looked well, I did start trashing images and data from the old iphoto library in the Pictures file from the years that I had backed up on cd.
After a computer restart, I opened iPhoto to a vast grey emptiness. It is obviously not finding the new library on the external HD, but it is not giving me the dialog box to give it directions. The new library folder shows up on the external- how do I direct iPhoto to the new location? It does not appear that iPhoto has created a new empty library in my Pictures folder, the only thing there is the old (now incomplete) library.
    Thanks!

Looks like I'm back in business!
Yesterday, I'd tried renaming and changing the location of my old library folder with no results. In my panic, I totally missed the instructions to hold down the option key to get the dialog box and never tried that.
However, when I tried it this morning- still nothing! I found the new library on the external HD and clicked on it, but still no pictures. So moved the old library again, and I shut everything down (again) and restarted- and now it's working fine. I quit iPhoto and opened it several more times to make sure it was still working and it is.
Thanks for taking the time to respond!

When I use find file http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30073/find-file (which does tend to find files that "Finder" can't), it's not coming up with any other itunes library files that have been modified in the past week, which I know it would have been - unfortunately, I don't have a very recent backup of the hard drive.  It would be a few months old so it wouldn't have the complete library on it....any ideas?  I'm wondering if restarting the computer might help but have been afraid to do so in case it would make it harder to recover anything...I was looking at this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4211589?start=0&tstart=0 in the hopes that it might have a helpful suggestion but it's definitely a different scenario.

iPhoto - When I add new photos to iPhoto from my iMac they do not appear in the "Photos" library. They do appear in Last Import.  Any thoughts?

If you are seeing your photos in "Last Import", the photos are somewhere in your library. Perhaps the dates are wrong, and you do not see the photos arranged by date, where you expect them to be.
Select one of the photos on "Last Import", then ctrl-click it and select "Show in Event".  That will take you to the event in event view.

  • It Takes DAYS to Move an iPhoto Library to a New Computer Over Firewire?

I'm using Firewire disk mode to move my 150GB iPhoto library to a new computer.
It does the first 575 MB super-duper fast, and then slows to a crawl, eventually claiming it needs over a day to copy.
Same happened when I tried direct ethernet cable.
What's going on, and is there any good way to move a large iPhoto library?
Right now I'm running a terminal and doing a cp -r to see if that is faster.
    -D

How much free space do you have on the destination computer?  If it's not a whole lot more that the 150GB of the library that could be why it's slow.  It may not have enough contingous free space to store the library so it has to fragment it for storing.  Being a new Mac that shouldn't be a problem however.
Target Disk mode should be fast as it uses Firewire.

  • How do I save an IPhoto library onto a new hard drive while it's open? It is a miracle I got it open, and it has refused to be copied the usual way (by dragging its icon to destination drive).  i want to save those photos!

How do I save an IPhoto library onto a new hard drive while library is open? It is a miracle I got it open, and it has refused to be copied the usual way (by dragging its icon to destination drive).  i want to save those photos!

My external Lacie Hard drive that contains the IPhoto library is a "locked volume."  Wow, now it is suddenly letting me copy it. I dragged the library's icon to the new destination (a 3T hard drive) and it is working so far.
I have also had problems copying my IMovie events from this drive, whose data I'm trying to save.  It reaches a certain video and stops.  I will delete that video and try again.

  • Copied Iphoto 9 library to new Imac... question on faces...

    Hi,
I have an old macbook with Iphoto 9 loaded.  Faces never worked right on the Macbook and after a while, I just gave up.
I bought a new Imac yesterday and spent a while trying to figure out how to get my Iphoto library over to the new machine.
First, I used migration assistant and tried to migrate files from my time machine. It"migrated" the user that is defined on my macbook and the associated folders I specified in migration assistant (music, movies, pictures). I thought it would just populate Itunes, Imovie and Iphoto, but it actually just copied user "Mike" (my name is the user on my macbook) and the files, and then I couldn't even get at them (had some message saying they were locked or I didn't have permission or something to that effect)!  I thought it would automatically populate Itunes, Imovie and Iphoto with all my stuff from the time machine... but nope.
So, I deleted the user "Mike" from my Imac since it was unaccessible anyway.
Second, I decided to open Iphoto 11 from the new Imac and use the "import photos" command from there.  I navigated to the image folder on my Time Machine and imported that way.  I got closer this time... but it imported 32,000 images when all I have is ~6000!  Tons of duplicates and triplicates were loaded!  Doh.  Round 2 was a bust.
Third, I decided to delete the Iphoto library on the new Imac (since it now contained 32,000 images) and instead, straight up copy the Iphoto library from Time Machine and paste it into the approrpriate directory (this was midnight, so a little fuzzy, but think it was just in user>pictures... can't remember if there was an "Itunes" folder or not.)  Regardless, the Iphoto library seems to have copied over OK!  When I opened Iphoto this morning, it gave me a messahe about upgrading my Iphoto Library, but once that was done, all 6000 pictures were there, with all the events, etc.  So everything seems just fine.
    So really, 2 questions:
    1) Was this the right way to have done it all along or did I screw something up now that I will pay for later?  And if so, how should I fix it?
    2) I want to wipe out my "Faces" and start from scratch.  The "Faces" that are there now are left over attempts to get the Faces in my Iphoto 9 working (basically, it didn't work at all and the only phots in the folders are ones I manually put in there), and just want Iphoto 11 to do its thing without any legacy '09 attempts.  How do I wipe out what is in the Faces Corkboard and let Iphoto 11 go to work with identifying faces from scratch?
Sorry for the long post, but figure some background would be helpful!

The correct way to move  Library is to copy it to the new machine and just open it. You got it right at the end.
Just erase the Faces. Select a Face and go command-delete

  • IPhoto won't import new photos from Photo Stream.

    Hello,
iPhoto won't import new taken pictures from Photo Stream. When I disable and then re-enable Photo Stream, all pictures will be imported to iPhoto. But when I take some more pictures, these won't appear in Photo Stream (until disabling/enabling Photo Stream in iPhoto).
    Anyone with similar experience?

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
