Weird iSight + Quad problem...

I just got my brand new Quad and connected my old iSight to it. I connected it to the firewire port in the back of the G5. It was really laggy and the image shifted from dark to lighter, dark to lighter. So i disconnected it, and plugged it in to the firewire port in the front - works perfectly!!
Hmm.. i thought, maybe it's something with the firewire port? I tried connecting my 3rd gen. 40GB iPod (firewire), to the back firewire port and tried to transfer some files. Files transfer at normal speeds, both read/write. That's kinda weird, isn't?
So is it the iSight that's the problem?
Jakob
P.S. External harddrives work fine on both ports (front/back).
Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)
iMac G5 20" rev a.   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

That is odd. I recently got an iSight Update sent to my iSight. Perhaps a quick check to see if your is up to date may help.
It is very odd that you should experience the problem on one FW port but not the other.

  • Isight camera problems

I recently opened up Skype and my iSight camera displayed my picture with a strange IR or thermal type of image of me. I have gone through some basic trouble shooting steps such as opening other programs to see if the behavior exist, and also checking the system profiler. The system profiler shows that the iSight camera is recognized and the image behavior does exists in other programs. I have no idea why this has happened since my iSight camera was working perfectly the other day. Since there could be several different issues causing my iSight camera to malfunction, I am a little hesitant in trying to replace the iSight cable since I am not sure if I have exhausted all trouble shooting ideas. My specific model is the A1260 early 2008. Thank you for any help that you guys can provide.

    (1) If you are using the latest version of Skype, and if restarting your Mac does not correct the problem, you should first try to eliminate possible add-on software interference as Ralph suggested.
If you have never installed or used iGlasses, perhaps you have tried either
      http://b-l-a-c-k-o-p.com/skype-video-effects-mac.html
        - or -
      http://allocinit.com/index.php?title=CamTwist
Both of them claim to be able to add effects to Skype. Perhaps one is causing your problem.
    (2) If you can eliminate third party software add-ons, consider any of the following you have not tried:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
    (3) Be sure to test more than one user account. I also suggest that you try to get the Apple apps that use iSight working first. By troubleshooting with the Apple apps, you eliminate third-party unknowns as a possible cause.
    (4) Perhaps you can find Skype Help that will give you other ideas:

    Welcome to Discussions, Kartina H.
    (1) Do both of your iMac's speakers play when you disconnect your headphones?
    (2) Try unplugging and reconnecting the headphones. Also, gently wiggle the wire at both ends while you are listening to see if the connection may be bad.
    (3) Test with another pair of headphones to see if this particular set is the problem.
    (4) If you are testing iChat's recording capability, you may be experiencing this:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27443
(If so, perhaps your headphones are wired backward to give sound out of left only?)
Test recording another app like QuickTime or iMovie and see if its playback behaves the same.

  • Some playlists don't show up - weird iPod syncing problems

Apologies if this question has been answered elsewhere - couldn't find the answer when I was searching the boards last night. Don't know if this is an iTunes problem or an issue with the touch...
Last night, I plugged my iPod touch (1G) into my MacPro to add some new music. This is when things got weird!
First, I noticed that my iPod's name had mysteriously changed since the last time I synced it. It used to be called "Christine's iPod" and now it has reverted to the default "iPod touch."
Next, when I went to add some different playlists to the iPod, I noticed that one of the playlists I wanted to add didn't show up in the Music tab, so I couldn't "tick" it for inclusion on the iPod. This isn't a new playlist, and I have successfully synced it with this iPod in the past. I tried renaming the playlist and making a new playlist with the same songs, and neither of these playlists showed up either. BTW, I definitely don't have too many playlists - I probably have 100-150 playlists total.
Anyway, I restored my iPod and starting from scratch - and the playlist still didn't appear to be available to sync. I ended up adding the playlist by "manually managing" my music, but this isn't an ideal solution. I'd like to be able to sync the playlist!!
Don't know if it's relevant, but my bf also has an iPod touch that he syncs to the same iTunes account. We have separate computer logins, and our iTunes Library is on a shared disk on our MacPro (to prevent needlessly wasting HD space due to song replication) and occasionally we both get messages saying we don't own or don't have permission to access the Library when opening iTunes. To solve this, we alter the permissions on the disk and apply to enclosed items. Maybe this happens after updating iTunes or adding new songs? Not certain what triggers it.
Thanks in advance - this is really bugging me!

This isn't foolproof but there are usually two things that contribute to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod, both due to information either in or missing from the Get Info>Info tab against the song in iTunes. 1) the song has no album name associated with it or 2) the song is marked as part of a compilation.
If tracks are missing an Album name (as mentioned above) in the Info tab, this information needs to be filled in. The no album one is a bit quirky as the songs will appear under certain circumstances but the simplest remedy is just add None or Miscellaneous in place of a title. See this link for more detail: I don't see some of my songs when browsing by artist on my iPod
Also if the tracks are ticked in the Get Info>Info tab as part of a compilation, they will not appear under Artist on the iPod. Highlight a song in iTunes that you know is not appearing correctly on your iPod. Right click on it and choose Get Info and click the Info tab (alternatively choose Get Info from the File menu), if "Part of a Compilation" is marked untick it and afterwards update your iPod, you should find it now appears as normal. Compilations are stored in a separate folder in iTunes so the songs don't appear inside the normal Artist>Album folder which may be why this happens.

  • Weird event display problem in week view

Hi. I'm getting a weird display problem in week view. First time this has ever happened.
Some events appear to be missing, but when i double click on where I know the event is supposed to be, a new event is created (as excepted), and the missing events suddenly appear. When i move forward or back by a week, and then return to the week in question, the missing events are gone again. But, I can see the missing events in day view or month view.
    Any ideas?

    Dean,
Next, try reinstalling the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo).
    If that is unsuccessful:
    1. Use iCal>Export...>for each one of your individual calendars.
    2. Delete all but one of your calendars.
    3. Create a calendar and name it "Test."
    4. Delete the calendar which remained after step #2.
    5. Quit iCal.
    6. Remove the iCal plist, and drag the iCal plist file to your Desktop.
    7. Log out/in or restart.
    8. Restart iCal and use iCal>File>Import...for each one of the calendars that you exported in step #1.
    9. Delete the "Test" calendar, and any "Home/Work" calendar which was automatically created when you opened iCal in step #8.
    ;~)

  • Weird Internet Explorer problem!

Something really stranged has happened to my computer within the past couple of hours. I use IE 5 (yeah, I know...I am hopelessly out of date, but it has all my bookmarks and preferences and I like the way it functions much better than any other browser I've tried...). A little while ago I was doing some surfing and I guess something I did--some page I visited?--caused my Command key to be tied in to Subscriptions. I don't understand how this could be, but it's true. If I want to do something like copy + paste, or something else I might normally use the Command key for, I can't do it. Instead, my pushing the Command key causes a window to pop up asking if I wish to subscribe to the site in question. (Actually, at first, whenever I pushed Command, my subscriptions were updated, so I went in and deleted all my subscriptions, but that didn't take care of the underlying problem.)
I am not particularly computer literate. For instance, I can't even tell you what the bar across the top of my screen is called (the one that starts on the left with the Apple logo, followed by File, Edit, View, Go, etc.). But I can tell you that that bar, when I'm in IE, is fouled up. After "Go," there is a bunch of garbled stuff that reads, approximately (I can't type all the symbols), "p[symbols]>Favorites[symbol]AddPagetoFavoritesD[checkmark]OrganizeFavorites[bu nch of other symbols ending in a black apple]Update Su." Then the bar continues with Tools, Window, and Help. When I click on that bar and the dropdown menu appears, it is some weird, mangled, unusable version of my bookmarks. However, if I use the Favorites tab on the left side of the window, my bookmarks are there and usable.
I've poked all around in Help and Preferences and, not surprisingly, cannot find any way to undo this. (I'd be amazed if I actually found something telling me what to do if my Command key brings up my subscription window!) It's really unfortunate because, as I said, I like IE and this is making it pretty hard for me to use it, since I can't do anything involving the Command key.
Have any of you ever encountered this? It is about the weirdest thing my computer has ever done!
imac   Mac OS 9.2.x   IE 5

Hmmmm. Are you getting problems with disappearing
words in the menu in IE alone? How about other
programs or when you open your HD - any strangeness
with the titles in the windows?
It seems only to be in IE. By the way, I also have a Mozilla browser on my computer, which I installed because so many sites were simply not working with IE anymore. Mozilla is working fine. If I liked Mozilla as well as IE, I'd just use that, but it has numerous differences (mostly about commands and things like not being able to click and hold on an image or page to open it in a new window) and 9 times out of 10 I prefer the IE way of doing things (though that could mostly be habit).
IIRC, Microsoft is set to remove Internet Explorer
for Mac from it's website VERY soon..
Yeah, I think in April. It's too bad--IE for Mac has become the unwanted stepchild browser.Yahoo doesn't work with it (at least, not the version I have), and I frequently get alerts when I go to sites that tell me my experience won't be optimal since I'm using IE. But I really like it! I use Safari at work (I have OS X there) and, like Mozilla, it has various differences that bug me, plus it just looks strange--somehow less "live" than IE--as if I am looking at a PDF of a web page rather than the actual page.
In a pinch, there's also iCab which is a wonderful
browser that is still being developed for OS 9.
    http://icab.de
Thanks for the tip. But with an unusual browser like that, don't you get the same warnings all over the net about how this or that site doesn't support your browser?

  • ISight Cam - - Problem and question (and an OS X Question)

I just recieved my Certified Reconditioned iMac G5 (17" 1.9 GHz). I am having one problem with my iSight camera that I noticed only on the third day of using it.
When I open an app like Photobooth, the picture from the camera is nice and colorful and bright, but if you watch it, it will grow darker and slightly blue-tinted. Is this an issue, from power or hardware???
Also, I would like to know if I could record videos without having to buy Quicktime Pro.
also, my mac came with OS 10.4.2, how do I upgrade it to 10.4.6?

The changing of the picture from the camera is most likely just the camera auto-adjusting to try and get the best possible image from the current light conditions. Most digital camera types have automatic modes that try to do things like that, and often they don't seem to be doing a very good job of it. Software intelligence isn't always the smartest thing in the world ...
As for upgrading 10.0.4.6, just run software update. You'll find it among the system preferences. (And you can always use Spotlight to search for it. Spotlight's smarter than the iSight fortunately

  • ISight - sound problem

I started using iSight today. After some adjustments (AIM), I successfully (A&V) communicated with a PC user. Later in the day, we linked up again and this time the V (video) was fine, however the A (audio) became a problem i.e., he could hear me - I could not hear him. Anyone have any ideas about who has what problem? Thanks.

You're welcome. Glad things are now working for you. And thank you for your feedback. It is helpful to all of us who read your post.
If you continue to have less than satisfactory video chats, you can try testing to see where the problem lies.   Both parties to any problem chat should test with more than one other user to determine which end of the connection is causing your symptoms. If you do not have enough available buddies for testing, you can find more Buddy Names for iChat Test here.
It is not unusual for the video you get from you AIM for Windows PC buddy to be of lower quality than from most of your Mac iChat AV Buddies. That may be due, at least in part, to limitations of the AIM for Windows output or your buddy's PC system or internet connection.
You can try to improve overall video chat performance on your Mac by updating to 10.4.4 and considering any other suggestions relevant to your system from Help for iChat AV 3 Problems.
If you want even more quality video after applying the suggestions from the "Help for iChat AV 3 Problems" link above, Check your Broadband Speed. Increasing your broadband speed will probably be the easiest way YOU can improve your video quality, although it does so at increased cost.
Other improvements to your PC buddy's video will need to come from your AIM for Windows PC buddy's end of the connection.
I have AOL Instant Messenger 4.7 ... I assume that I do not have to have Instant Messenger running to communicate with iSight. You do not really need AIM 4.7 at all. I suggest you uninstall AIM 4.7 according to the AIM instructions.
As explained in the AIM section of Common PC Chat Applications and iChat, AIM 4.7 is a TEXT ONLY app. You can use iChat AV to do text with AIM users, so AIM is not really required.
If you decide to keep AIM 4.7 on your Mac, do not launch it or have it running when you launch iChat AV or while you run iChat AV. As explained in the "Help for iChat AV 3 Problems" link above, you should launch iChat AV by itself, and while you are using iChat AV, you should only add other apps if they are really necessary.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • Isight quality problem with10.5.3 drivers and iMovie08/ichat, Works in XP?

    Hello,
We have 125 new imacs with isight cameras built in. We intended to use several of them for our sign language program to record sign language and ichat using sign language. This was tested on a macbook with built in isight and the quality was good enough for our instructors to use. When attempting to record with the isight in iMovie8 or use ichat there is a pronounced delay of several seconds and the quality is not as good as the test done with the macbook. Using the same isight camera in a virtual Windows XP computer, on VMWare's fusion, the camera works much better without the noticeable delay or blurriness in MS Movie Maker. How come we are getting such crummy results from the native 10.5.3 drivers or iMovie08 and ichat?

    Alberto,
In addition to the recommendations others offer here, you can consider any untried suggestions from
]Help for iChat AV 3 Problems and
    ]Mac Video Chat with PCs
that are applicable to your system.
Moreover, the fact that you can use the same Mac and ISP connection to successfully video when using iChat AV 2.1 makes me wonder about your installed iChat AV 3.0.1 or your 10.4.2. Did you update usign the 10.4.2 Combo Updater as recommended in How I Update My Mac OS X?
Your comment on NetBarrier may be significant. I will leave it to Ralph to address that and the configuration issues you are already working.

  • ISight facing problem

    Hi guys,
Would like to seek help from people around here as i have just install windows xp on my new macbook but after installing all bootcamp drivers my iSight wasnt detected by windows xp sp3. i have tried all ways to uninstall the driver and reinstalling again it doesnt help. therefore i seek help from here if anyone could give me any advise on how to get that built in iSight to work with windows xp sp3?

Same problem here. Before I was using Bootcamp with a MacBook - the iSight camera worked great. But with my brand new MacBook Pro with Bootcamp and XP SP3, the installer on the MacOSX install disk fails to install the driver for the iSight camera....
Is the difference SP3 vs SP2? Please, Apple, can you do something to fix this?? I've just spent several hours de-installing, re-installing, looking for drivers on the web etc etc.

  • IMac G5 17" iSight display problem

Hi - I have an iMac G5 17" iSight. Specs are 1.5 Ghz G5, 2.5 GB RAM, 150 GB Hard Drive and SuperDrive. The Hard Drive is wiped clean, I boot it with an external FW drive running 10.5.7.
Here are the issues: As soon as the machine boots, the LCD shows 3 permanent vertical lines on the screen. This is as soon as it displays anything, from the initial Apple logo all the way until shutdown. While it is on and booted up to the desktop, it runs fine, except sometimes it will randomly refresh the screen or change resolutions. These are the only issues.
While I am quite sure it is one of three things (inverter, video cable or LCD), I still took the typical troubleshooting approach and tried any quick fixes I could. These included-
    1. Boot off of known good OS
    2. PRAM Reset
    3. SMU Reset
    4. Reseat RAM
All of these had no effect. From there I tried two more things-
    1. External display via mini VGA
    2. Ran Apple Hardware Test
    3. Ran LCD tester
The external display worked perfectly, which tells me that it isn't the GPU/logic board. I ran AHT and the logic board passed both quick and extended tests. During the extended test I got an error for the ATA bus/drive, but I haven't looked up the error code yet. Everything passed in the quick test. I used the LCD tester, which puts solid colors on the screen (Red, Green, Blue, White, Black). The 3 lines run across the whole screen vertically, and cannot be seen on a solid white screen. On the solid black screen they show up yellow and purple.
Here is a screen shot showing the three vertical lines-
    http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/thisismymind/untitled.jpg
I was wondering if there is an easy way to diagnose this just by looking at it. I was figuring replacing the inverter and/or the video ribbon cable first before replacing the LCD... but if anyone here can diagnose it easily than that may save some time.
    Thanks in advance!

  • External iSight camera problem solved!

    Hi all,
Hope this will help some of you.
My iSight camera works fine with G5 PPC but on my new Intel Mac Pro - nothing, not seen in System Profiler or Skype - I don't use iChat . I tried everything suggested here to no avail, until while looking on Amazon for something else I found a company selling 9 Pin to 6 Pin FW leads, who stated that often FW800/400 adaptors with FW400 leads do no work. They quote "Ours are guaranteed to work". I bought one plugged it in and success iSight now seen in both System Profiler and Skype.
It is supplied by Neet and its description is "Firewire 800 to 400 cable -(2M)- 9 Pin to 6 Pin - IEEE1394b(for Mac & PC) 2M FLX Pro lead. Cost £7.95 + £2.75 special P&P.
Many thanks to all on these forums for so much help

    You're welcome, John.
Cheers for your solution for using your old external (Firewire) iSight with a new Mac.
I have gathered my personal experience and the successes of others who post here. To your recent success story, I add the options I know for ways to connect your FW400 external iSight to a FW800 Mac port:
    • This Firewire 400-800 cable can work: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TP320LL/A
      (I use this one.)
    • Some report that this low-priced alternative cable works:
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189097"
    • To use your FW400 6pin-6pin cable, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter like one of these:

  • Weird bzr upgrade problem

Whenever I run pacman -Syu or pacman -Syyu, even after running pacman -Scc, it always upgrades bzr to version "bzr-1.3-1.1", it does it every time, has been doing it for about a week and I have no clue why, I tried changing the mirror, but it makes no difference, it just keeps upgrading bzr, even if I've already upgraded it many times.
It's not too annoying, but I would like to know if there's something in my config that is making it behave weird (I have testing enabled, so it might be that, although it says it installs the package from extra?)

It's a problem with the repo. Hopefully, it'll be fixed soon.

  • VERY weird OVM networking problem

First, this may have nothing to do with OVM, but the problem I'm seeing is happening on all FIVE of my VM servers. I can't even guess what's going on. Maybe you have seen this and solved it, or maybe you can suggest what I can do to debug this.
    Here are the details:
I have a 3-node cluster, built from brand new IBM x3650 M4 servers. I have a 2-node cluster, built from old retired IBM xSeries servers that used to be VMWare ESX servers. My office is on another subnet from the data center network that contains all 5 servers. I see the following symptoms occasionally and randomly (I see it at least once a day, and can make it happen multiple times a day if I keep trying):
    1. When I SSH to one of these boxes, sometimes the session will freeze. At other times, the session will work perfectly, but after exiting the SSH session, any subsequent attempt to ping or connect via TCP from my desktop to that server will absolutely fail. That is, ping, traceroute, and ssh (and presumably, everything) failes.
    2. If I don't try to communicate with that server for several minutes (maybe 5 to 10 minutes, I'm not sure), and then try to ping or SSH to the box, it works again!
    3. However, if after, say, exiting SSH, and finding that I can't ping the server, if I keep pinging (from Windows, I say "ping -t -w 5000 vmserver") the pings will fail FOREVER. I have left it pinging for 24 hours, and it would never answer a ping. But then if I stop the pinging, wait ten minutes, and ping again, it works. I swear.
    4. During the time that I am unable to ping one of VM servers from my desktop, if I try to ping that same server from another desktop machine in my office, connected to the SAME little 4-port switch, it works perfectly.
    5. This is ever more weird: During the time that my desktop 1 cannot ping server1, say, I can go go desktop 2 (right beside desktop 1), open an SSH session to server1, and from there, I can ping desktop1. I swear.
Why would I think this is an Oracle VM problem, you ask? Well, I wouldn't, except that I have other servers in that data center, that run ESX, and AIX, and Windows, and I've tried like hell to make one of them exhibit one of these symptoms, and I cannot do it.
If you have any ideas about what the heck is going on, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Doesn't sound like a VM problem to me. Sounds like you either have a spanning tree loop or you've got a lot of packet collisions causing issues.
I don't know how much you know about networking but a spanning tree loop is when you have multiple paths connected to the same physical network without using load balancing or multipathing. You can have multiple connections between physical networks but it must be configured properly or you'll have one link come up and the other go into blocking mode. you'll never know which one it might be. That is.... if the links have the same cost. Thus you get a "loop". If the ports are "floping". You'll have times when its up and times when its down. Your network admin should be able to see if the spanning tree is constantly be rewritten. That is a sure sign you have a network loop.
You said you have a 4 port switch? If that switch is set on a port that's set to do "portfast" then the switching fabric will never learn what's behind that switch. You just can't plug a switch into a network and expect it to work. Again, I don't know what you know about networking so don't take it the wrong way.
Packet collisons happen when you have a link between equipment where one side negotiates to a different speed than another. Say one side is 100 half duplex while the other end is 1000G Full duplex. You get massive amounts of collision and it will only get worse the more traffic you try to pass. Again. You mentioned a 4 port switch. You should never assume that switches will ever negotiate at the same speed on each end of the connection. Cisco has historically recommended that inter switch links be hard code to avoid 'negotiation" issues. Its not a big a difference in 1 gb siwtchiing and 10 gb switch but if you have a 100 mb 4 port switch hooked into a 1gb link..... that might be your problem. Just some thoughts.
IF you really were having a VM issues. The cluster heartbeat would be causing the VM servers to constantly reboot. So I don't think its on you servers. Probabily between you and the servers.

  • Weird tty console problem if I leave X (e g I press ctrl+alt+F1)

    Hello,
I have a weird problem with my console.  When I leave Xorg, by pressing ctrl+alt+F1 for example to get to a console, the console is a horrible mess.  It is a working console, but it looks so terrible you cannot recognize a single character.  Little multi-colored squares are all around the screen and some are blinking representing the cursor.  The conosle however, still works as I can blindly type things like top and press enter and watch the squares dance as top runs.
Anyone heard of this problem before?
Thanks and sorry for posting so much in the forums,
    e^1

Yeah I believe it is a bug with the nvidia driver for that card.(Maybe others?)
I switched to the nv driver and the problem hasn't come back.
