Weird iTunes/iPod/Podcast interaction

I've noticed something weird a few times now, when a podcast gets posted, but there's a serious problem and it gets re-posted.
I have seen reposts on the "Coverville" Podcast, but it has never had this issue, (and the repost always has "Repost" at the start of the description.)
but on "This Week in Media" episode 118 got posted, with some serious audio issues, and it appears to have gotten reposted, and there are now two identical entries under the podcast. iTunes seems to understand that those are two separate entries and audio files, but my iPod Classic 80GB does not.
wheras iTunes shows one of the two entries as new, the iPod showed both copies of show 118 as new, and both of them play the older, (non-fixed) version. there are even two speaker icons for the two entries on the menu as it plays.
Is there any way to resolve this issue? or am I going to have to wait for new firmware?

I've just looked on the iTunes Store and there is now only episode 118 of "The Week In Media", so presumably the Podcast's producers have removed the faulty file.
It's the Podcast's producer who provides the Podcast as a file - complete with its faults. The faulty file will be replaced, by the producer, when they realise there is a problem. It would be their (the producer's) responsibility to remove the faulty file. And therein lies the problem. If they do not remove the faulty file, iTunes and your iPod have to cope as best as they can with what appears to be two copies of the same file, with the same name!
Imagine twin people, both with the same name! No wonder the iPod plays both!
The resolution lies with the Podcast's producers. As with all Podcasts, they are completely independent of iTunes and Apple. All iTunes does is look for new episodes of the programmes you tell it to look for and then go and fetch them from where ever the producer stores them. They are not in the iTunes Store.
Write to the producer of the podcast to let them know of your experience. Of course, they may not care!
Actually, having proofread my reply, it occurs to me that what may be happening is that your iTunes is downloading the faulty file as soon as it's available, and then downloading the second, correct version when that becomes available, because it simply sees a new Podcast, not a replacement. The answer still lies with the producer. Perhaps they do not realise what is happening. Once again, write to them and let them know. Quote me if you wish.
I personally think it's unlikely that Apple will devote resources to fix someone else's errors. I wouldn't if it was my business.

This began when my WiFi sync stopped working.  As far as I can recall, it was coincident with loading IOS-8.  For what it's worth, my WiFi sync with my original iPad (IOS-5.1.1) has been flawless.
I tried a reboot but it didn't help so I did a Restore.  That solved the problem and, as far as I can determine, the iPod is working properly in all respects.  However, it created a problem with iTunes...
After the Restore, the app displays on the iTunes screens show perhaps a third or a half of my apps grayed out.  See screen shot below.  You'll notice that the issue affects both Apple apps and non-Apple apps.  This did NOT happen before the Restore.  All apps look properly and work properly on the iPad (at least the half dozen that I tried).
Note that this problem does NOT appear with the 5.1.1 iPad.
I rebooted the iPod several times and nothing changed.  I tried a sync several times and nothing changed.  I did another Restore and it appeared to solve the problem - all apps displayed properly on iTunes.  Unfortunately, when I shut down iTunes and opened it up again the problem returned.  This happens with both with a WiFi connection and a cable connection.
I tried a third Restore (yes, I'm a glutton for punishment).  Same result.  Problem temporarily resolved but returned after iTunes shut down and re-open.
I trashed the Preferences plist file and allowed iTunes to create a new one.  No change.  I repaired Permissions.  No change.
I tried to trash the iTunes application so that I could reload a brandy new version but a message appeared stating iTunes can not be modified or deleted because it’s required by the IOS.
    Any clues?

  • Weird iTunes and podcast problem

I'm having a weird issue with one of the weekly podcasts I'm subscribed to. It's encoded in 320kbps AAC, when the episode downloads I then convert it to 192 kbps. After the conversion, for whatever reason it puts the episode in my music section instead of podcasts. I do this with other podcasts, and I can always go in and change the media type back to podcast and it shows up back in the correct section. This particular show will not allow me to change the media type without turning off itunes match. After doing so, I change the type, it shows up in podcasts, turn itunes match back on, then a few minutes later it removes my type and puts it back in music?? Any ideas? As I mentioned, I do this with other shows without any problems

  • Bad iTunes/iPod podcast sync

I've noticed iTunes 7 handles podcasts particularly poorly. I've got it set to copy the last 3 episodes of a selection of podcasts to my 2G iPod. Some of them don't appear in the "podcasts" icon under the iPod in iTunes, nor do they appear in the "podcasts" playlist when using the iPod itself. They also don't show up as "Music" when viewed through iTunes, although they can be found by album or artist when using the iPod itself. Among the annoying side-effects are the fact that these "lost" podcasts are re-copied every time I sync the iPod, and there appears to be no straightforward way to delete them.
I dropped two episodes of a podcast that I don't subscribe to (ie, I just picked up two ad hoc episodes from the iTunes store) and they were treated the same way - they're on the iPod, but not on its "podcasts" playlist, and totally invisible to iTunes.

I figured out part of the problem - I had the sync set to copy "last 3 unplayed episodes", rather than "last 3 episodes".
Still, I see no way to get ad hoc episodes of podcasts (ie, from series I don't subscribe to) from the iTMS and into an iPod.

  • IPod Podcasts tab empty after consolidating iTunes 7 music library

I followed these instructions to move my iTunes 7 library to a different hard drive. All seemed fine.
Except that when I connected each of my 2 iPods the first time after moving the library, each one complained that no podcasts could be synced because all of the podcasts that had been enabled for syncing were now missing; and then the podcasts that had been on the iPods were deleted.
And sure enough, the "podcast" tab in each iPod's preferences (where one can select which podcasts to sync to a given iPod) shows no available podcasts.
Weirdly (and fortunately), the Podcast source in the source list is fine. All of my subscribed podcasts are displayed, and each episode is still playable (and the music files are intact, in the new location). Additionally, chosing to sync "all" podcasts on the podcast tab would seem to work, because I'm told there's not enough space to move all the podcasts, and asked if I want to turn off podcast syncing for the iPod.
But there are no podcast subscriptions visible in tbat list, so I can't select any to sync. It seems to be all or nothing.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I was able to fix this problem, just by chance. I manually updated a podcast in the podcast source list, and discovered a little later that the podcast I'd updated was again visible in the iPod's podcast tab.
I went through all of my subscribed podcast entries in the source list and updated them (right+click -> "Update Podcast") and now they're all visible again in the iPod podcast tab.
    Hope this helps someone else.

    Hello, bisco,
This forum is for questions from people who administer iTunes U sites. You'll be most likely to get help with this issue if you ask in the iTunes or iPod forums.

  • IPod Podcast List in iTunes Doesn't Show all Podcasts

    iTunes 11.1.1
    4th gen iPod Shuffle
I just refreshed all podcasts in iTunes.
Hooked up Shuffle to sync, went to Podcast tab & many podcasts that show up via iTunes Podcast section are not there...
I've never noticed this happen before.
    HELP!!
    Thanks

I don't know the cause of the problem you describe.  You may want to report it as a "bug" to Apple using the Feedback web page for iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
Also, since this is a problem related to iTunes (the app), and not directly related to using a shuffle, you may get additional replies by posting the question here (in the iTunes for Mac forum category)
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/itunes/itunes_for_mac
I can offer a possible "work-around."  On the shuffle's Podcasts "tab" in iTunes, at the bottom of the screen, there is a list called Include Episodes from Playlists.  On this list, you can select playlists in your iTunes library that have podcast episodes.
In your iTunes library, create a new playlist.  You can call it something line "iPod Podcasts," or whatever you want.  Add podcast episodes you want on the shuffle to this playlist.
NOTE:  Click the plus sign at the bottom of the sidebar to create a new playlist.  If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
On this playlist, you can add a mix of episodes from multiple podcasts, and put the episodes in any desired playlist order (by dragging them around on the list or sorting by a column heading).
Back on the shuffle's Podcasts tab, select (checkmark) this playlist under Include Episodes from Playlists.  Click Apply to sync the selection, as well as the playlist itself, to the shuffle.
On the shuffle, you should be able to play the episodes from the separate podcast playlists (using VoiceOver to switch), or from the "iPod Podcasts" playlist.  To play podcasts from a (regular) playlist on a shuffle, you must set the shuffle's power switch to the play-in-order (middle) position.  The episodes play in playlist order.
If that works, I can provide additional info on using Smart Playlists to "automate" the process.  It may actually be more convenient than using the iPod's Podcasts tab to manage podcasts on the shuffle.

I own an iPod Classic.  In iTunes, some podcast videos cant be played on teh iPod, so I set it to convert the video to the right format for the iPod.  It used to work perfectly, but now for some reason, it doesnt convert properly!  When I play the video, it is just a white screen, but the sound can be heard.  Can anyone help??????

Your source video file is probably muxed.
Neither QT Pro or iTunes has the ability to successfully encode a muxed video file with audio. You'll end up with video and no audio.
See: iPod plays video but not audio of some exported files.
You'll need to use some other third-party software to do the conversion. There's a handful of software available. Just search the forums and you'll find many titles mentioned.
    Try MPEG Streamclip.

  • Older and manually-added podcasts not in iTunes 7 Podcasts

I recently upgraded to iTunes 7. For some of the older podcasts and ones that I have downloaded manually, they don't appear under the Podcasts icon in either the iTunes:Library:Podcasts or iTunes:Devices:<my iPod>:Podcasts.
All these new and old podcasts have the Podcast genre label.
However, if I create a Podcasts Smart Playlist with the genre is Podcast, I can see them all. However, I notice that in the Browser, the newer podcasts show up in the Artist mind-window as "Podcasts", while the older ones have their actual Artist listed.
What is going on here? It's really inconsistent, and I miss some of my podcasts going through the Podcast label on the top level of the iPod.
    iPod 20GB, 4G   Windows XP

I use the "Recently Added" smart playlist to find my "hidden" manually-sync'd podcasts. Let's me play them but I can't delete the darn things EVER! I'm afraid to try the suggestion about only syncing checked items cuz every time I change the syncing settings, everything gets deleted off my ipod.
Thank goodness I have the 60G so at least I have room -- for now -- for the old undeletable ipods. If I had a nano, I'd be really mad!
Has anyone figured out how to delete?

  • Sync with only one iTune/iPod account and have EVERYTHING EARSED

I've up dated to 7.11 and when I plug my iPod 40G photo in, I get message that you can only have one iTune/iPod per computer account...trouble is that THIS IS THE COMPUTER I started my iPod with!! Now it wants to sync and earse all my songs but better yet 8,000 songs are missing in the library!!
I also have 3 other iPods and none will be allowed in the library!
    HELP!!!!

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Once you are safely connected if you can't reinstate your library from your computer then there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 so it requires a little adaptation, also it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

  • Our podcast shows black thumbnails on iPod Podcasts screen

Our podcast shows black thumbnails on iPod Podcasts screen, im not talking about the channels logo here, that works fine.
It's when you have subscribed to the feed and the podcasts are downloaded to your Apple mobile device and you view your podcasts on screen, down the left it has little video thumbnails of the episodes.
In my case apart from one episode they all show a black video thumbnail and I want to show our logo or ideally a frame from that episode say 5 seconds in would do.
    Thanks for any help.
    Podcast URL: http://www.beddysblog.com/podcast/supercarspin/supercarspin.xml

I don't know exactly how the iPod works in this context: in iTunes, when subscribing, the image you see for each episode is either the first chapter image of an 'enhanced' podcast or an image which has been embedded in the file. I don't know what it does with movie files - possibly the first frame. You could subscribe in iTunes on your PC and see what shows there.
In any event, you should be able to embed an image of your choice in each file (you would then need to re-upload it). The method is described here:
