Weird lines behind icons in Finder

My father has a G5 tower running Leopard. Lately, it's been showing odd horizontal lines behind the icons on the desktop and the dock.
See screen capture here: http://homepage.mac.com/rmansfield/assets/misc/badscreen1.png
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Hi there
I am having the same problem with the strange lines that you asked the mac discussion about back in May. I was searching there for some help. Did you resolve this problem? If so, do you mind sharing how?
Thanks,
Natalie

i just moved my safari off the bottom line of icons on my mac. where do I find now, or how do i get it back?

Simply go back into your applications folder and find the icon for Safari. Click and drag the icon back into the menu bar. You can choose where to place it by moving it to the perfered place in the menu bar and unclick to set.

  • Corrupt file type icons in finder

    Hi there,
I discovered a problem with small icons in Finder and it's driving me insane that I can't figure out how it happened and how to remedy it. Hope anyone here can help!
    The symptoms:
The problem concerns .mkv and .srt files. In the list or column view in Finder, these file types have exec icons instead of the regular VLC icons. However, when I change to icon or cover flow view, the correct VLC icons are shown. Also in quick look the correct icons are shown. So, the problem only seems to concern small icons, but not large ones.
I tried to change the icon via Command+I. The preview icons are correct, only in the tool bar the incorrect small exec is shown. However, when I drag-drop the small exec icon from the bar to the large item, also small exec icon in Finder changes to the correct VLC icons. But only for this particular file and for all files of that type. Also when I download a new .srt or .mkv file the small icons are again exec images. SOO weird!
What scares me a little is that I did a another clean install of Yosemite after I discovered this. And nothing changed! What is happening here? I hope someone can help!
    Potential cause:
The problem wasn't there after I updated to Yosemite. I did a clean install and everything was fine. However, at one point I ran the OS X version of Gmaptool  (a .img merge app for Garmin navigation maps). The app is only a command line and the file also has an exec icon. After I ran this command line, the problem occurred. Does anyone know how this could have happened?
Thanks for your help! It's driving me insane!

Perhaps it's a good idea to upload a few screenshots
As you can see in the first three pictures, only small icons show the exec icon. Large ones are the correct VLC icons. The last two show the Info windows. In the first one, you can see the small exec icon in the tool bar. It changed after I dropped this exec icon on the icon field (see second Info picture). However, this only changed the small icon for this particular file, not for all .srt files.
Is there some weird preference causing this? I also found a few system files now have exec icon (see picture below). I think that wasn't the case before. How can I change it? Can I reset the small icons somehow? Would it help to securely erase the hard drive? I have nothing on the drive anyways, so that would be an easy option for me.
    Thanks!

  • Strange display problems: lines, missing icons, pieces of windows that stay on screen...

My white 24" iMac has recently started having problems with the display. Because I'm able to capture it with Grab and due to the nature of the problem, it doens't appear to be hardware related. But, not sure. See the screen cap I took below as an example of one of the problems I'm seeing.
I'll try to describe a few other display anomalies I'm having:
Moving a window leaves the background that it was on intact all around the edge of the window, where the drop shadow would be.
The Dock, which is set to be hidden until my cursor moves into that area, will appear sometimes with some of the icons missing, but, the shadows for those icons are visible on the Dock. Or, there are weird lines and patterns around each icon.
While using Safari and a few other apps, I'll frequently get colored lines and patterns that suddenly appear across the screen, and then disappear when my cursor moves over that part of the screen.
When I click on the minimize button, the window uses the Genie effect to move into the Dock, but, often leaves a bit of the window on the screen. It will sometimes clear when I drag another window over the area, or the window I'm dragging will start looking like it does in the screen cap below.
My graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. I updated the firmware to ROM Revision 3467, but, it didn't seem to make any difference. The only think I can recall doing before this problem happened is I installed the iTunes 10.4.1 update. I'm running OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
This iMac is about 4.5 years old, so, it's not covered by warranty anymore which means I can't take it to an Apple Store for troubleshooting. I'm hoping someone knows how I can fix this. It just started doing this a week ago. Thanks!
    Tom

    Hi Michelefree,
My iMac does not have a separate video card, so, I was not able to replace it as suggested above. Apparently with the Intel iMacs, or at least the one I have, the video "card" is actually a few chips on the logic board. I was told the only way to fix this is to replace the entire logic board, which is too costly (no longer within warranty).
I did a bit of research and discovered that the problem seems to be related to how hot the computer gets. I noticed this, too. When I started using my iMac first thing in the day, no problems. As the day progressed and the computer heated up, I'd start having all these video problems.
I found a utility called smcFanControl which allows you to speed up the mininim fan speeds inside the computer, which helps keep it cooler. Since I installed this, I've had very few video problems. So, it appears to have "solved" my problem for now.
I wish there was a better solution than this band-aid fix, but, it's a lot cheaper than having the logic board replaced or buying a new iMac, the only choices I was given by Apple. Hope it works for you, too!

  • Document icon in Finder window differs from Get Info icon

I've been noticing unexpected document icons in Finder windows for quite some time.
This is especially true for PDF files. Since the early days of Mac OS X, I've configured my Macs to open PDF files in Adobe Reader, and I'm accustomed to seeing an Adobe PDF document icon on each PDF file. For some time, I've been seeing different PDF icons, e.g., a document with fuzzy text lines and a black ring binding on the left edge.
I thought this might be a custom icon. But when I do a Get Info on the PDF file, the conventional Adobe PDF icon appears in the Get Info window.
Is this different between the Finder icon and the Get Info icon a bug or a feature?
    -- Ward

It's a feature. Any window that has the View Options set to "Show Icon Preview" will do that. It actually is rather handy in a folder that is set to icon view, with nice BIG icons, you can often see the first page (which is what is displayed) clearly enough to recognize exactly what the file is. In List view it isn't at all helpful, nor is it helpful in those cases where you have icon view set, but the icons are quite small (as is the case on my Desktop, and, I suspect, on most people's Desktops). A pdf that has multiple pages will additionally show the "binder" along the left edge. The Finder is drawing these custom icons on the fly from the contents of the file. The only way to defeat it is to turn of the Show Icon Preview for the folder(s) where you don't want an essentially useless and often counter-productive icon. Do that from the Finder's View menu item, Show View Options. Oh, and every folder has different options for each view. So you can turn it off for List view, but have it turned on for icon view, where it might actually be useful.

  • Dark blue bar on folder icons in Finder?

This is probably just a trivia question, but what's the significance of the dark blue bars on some folder icons in Finder? I just copied some folders into my MySQL database and noticed that almost evey folder I copied has a dark blue bar across it.

    Sorry for the late response.
I just checked a folder that was full of such icons, but they all look normal now. But then I checked another folder and found an icon with something I forgot to mention - a little X on top. Here's a screen shot...

There are also icons that are faded. The appear to represent folders that weren't finished copying.

  • ITunes has weird lines all over the screen, then crashes.

Installed iTunes 8.0.1 and it's got the same configuration troubles. It happened when I installed iTunes 8 but I just did the whole regedit solution and changed permissions. Have tried doing that for 8.0.1 and I can change all the permissions the right way but it still does not fix the problem. Have also tried finding and replacing the iTunes.exe in Program Files but either I'm blind or it's just not there because I can't find it anywhere. The only way I can get into iTunes is by plugging my iPod in, it opens iTunes without prompting a restart of the computer. However, this lasts between 10-15 minutes before the interface just changes, it gets lines where the columns are and all the album artwork in the Genius sidebar is replaced with 'Cannot Find' symbols. At this point iTunes crashes and I have to close it and plug my iPod in again to get it to come back up. What in the blue **** is going on?

    Bump!
I'm also seeing some weird lines across the screen before itunes crashes. It happens after an hour or so of using itunes. I'm using Vista with iTunes v8.0.2.20. Any suggestions? Could it be the size of the library (~65,000)?

  • On my email page, I've lost the 3-line menu icon in upper right -- how can I get it back?

I inadvertently lost the little 3-line menu icon in the upper right corner of my email page. What can I do to get it back? I've tried pressing Alt and also Ctrl+Alt, as some instructions suggest, and nothing happens.

You probably have disabled the Mail Toolbar. Press F10 and choose View -> Toolbars and check Mail Toolbar.

  • Image icons in Finder

When I copy a lot of images into a folder, the icons in Finder aren't always created correctly. Can anyone tell me why or how to update them once they have been created?
    Here is a sample:

I tried several copies of hundreds of images both to a new folder on my desktop and to a new folder on the RAID. In all instances the icons were created correctly. I removed the com.apple.finder.plist and rebooted. The icons were then all recreated correctly. It looks like I'll have to reorder all the folders as the files are all jumbled up by name and such in the Finder window when viewing in icon mode, but I can deal with that.
I use Bibble to convert my RAW camera images into JPG images. Since Bibble makes use of multiple processors and threads to convert the images, I'm wondering if Finder is trying to create the thumbnails before each of the Bibble threads has completed. Next time I'll try running Bibble WITHOUT the finder window open, so that finder will have complete images to create thumbnails from when I open up the folder.
    Anyway, thanks for the tip.

  • Network icon in Finder not functional

    I have an Intel Mac Mini Core 2 Duo w/OS X 1.4.10.
My Network icon shows up in Finder just fine. BUT, below that it only shows three folders
    Applications
    Library
    Users
I can't see or browse my network at all. I can click on Go --> Connect To Server and manually do it, but I would rather have the option to see all the machines on my network. I have tried removing and re-adding the Network icon in Finder | Preferences. I have done a killall -HUP Finder.
I tried deleting all of those folders. Now my Network is empty, at least according to the OS X point of view.
On the flip side, I know Samba is working because I can browse the Mac from all my PC's.
Does any of you Mac guru's know what's going on? I know *nix and I know Windows. Mac's are fairly new to me...
    Thanks

username/password - I inherited this machine so yes, I am pretty sure I might have done that. Would it be easier to create another user and that way the preferences would be "fresh"?
Hey, great idea for a test!
I saw in that other Network folder problem thread about deleting a file called com.apple.systempreferences (or something very similar). Would that help?
The partial list of filesfolders I've seen cause problems are...
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    /Users/nnnnLibrary/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/SystemConfiguration/
I haven't been using it very long so configuring settings over again isn't a big issue.
If User settings aren't the problem... doesn't look like it to me so far, then an Archive and Install from your Install CD/DVD might be the trick.
P.S. Should I have to recreate the Network folder after reboot? applejack didn't recreate it if it was supposed to...
No, Applejack doesn't create anything... the OS should re-create that Network stuff once it reboots and finds none... maybe you have to toggle/do some Network stuff afterwards... not sure... still a bit blown away that what I did to fix the problem in several instances like yours... came up empty on your end!

  • Weird Lines during Playback??

I just got a 2.4 MBP with 4 gigs of Ram, and Final Cut Studio 2 Full Version. I shot some footage for a class project with my DVX-100a on the 30p recording setting. I captured the footage and started going through it and noticed these weird lines, I want to call them scan lines but I dont know if that is the proper term. The lines are transparent but distort the video where they are. I tried a test to see if they would still be there when I exported a Quicktime Movie, and oddly enough they weren't there...
Is it becuase one of my settings is off? This is very annoying, any help is greatly appreciated and THANK YOU in advance!

I've always disliked tapes as a moving part that could break, and understand there are advantages in terms of the codec used when storing data on a flash or hd based medium.< </div>
if they're so hard to describe, and you're sitting in front of them, how do you think we're going to figure out what they are?

  • Inconsistent and incorrect file icons in finder window list view

I have been seeing incorrect file icons in finder windows noteably for PDF files the last couple of weeks on my office MacMini running 10.5.8. Some just look messed up. Some switched and looked like Evernote files, but they open correctly in the default application - Preview.
Get info would show the same incorrect icon, but correctly show Preview as the default application.
Just now I tried clicking on CoverFlow view and when I went back to List view, the icons looked correct again.
What type of system maintenance if any is needed to correct this issue? Note, these files continue to display correctly on my home iMac where these files are synced.
    AndrewML

    Thanks for the reply Baltwo.
I followed your directions. After the restart the PDF icons were all displayed correctly.
However, some .doc file icons were blank. Selected one, got info, set it to open with MSWord and then clicked "apply to all." Most, but not all now display the Word logo. Some remain blank, although get info reveals they are set to open with Word. Will another restart fix this or is there another suggestion?
I will be away from this computer till Monday.

  • T60p 2613-H9U No Screen on boot Just weird lines...

    Hey guys,
I'm REALLY stumped. I installed a new screen purchesed off eBay almost a year ago. The screen works but for some reason it will not show any of the boot logos or anything until I hit windows login. It shows the "THINKPAD" screen right away and then just weird lines or blank.
The real problem is now my computer is fubar and I need to reformat but in order to do this I need pre-boot support. I tried installing windows on the drive attached another computer and then swapping but when I plug it into the thinkpad it just keeps boot "cycling" or boots over and over before loading windows.
I have also tried plugging in an external monitor with no luck. Same problems.
Any advice or help on how I can fix this screen and reformat would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Scott

Can you explain a bit more? The GPU is the gfx accelerator, there is no separate 2D/3D graphics card like in the old days.

  • How can i get coloured icons in finder sidebar?

Is there a way to get coloured icons in finder sidebar?
The greyscale icons are not really userfriendly ...
    Thx,
    Chriz

Finder, like the rest of Lion, has been visited by the color vampire
Apple says that its goal with the Lion user interface was to highlight content by de-emphasizing the surrounding user interface elements. You can see this most clearly in sidebar and toolbar icons, which are now monochromatic in most of the important bundled applications. But this has the unfortunate side effect of making interface elements less distinguishable from each other, especially at the small sizes typical in sidebars. I'm not sure the "increased emphasis on content" is enough to balance out the loss, especially in applications like the Finder.

  • Desktop, One line of icons frozen, and a window frozen on the side, top bar shadows of icons frozen.

So on my desktop, one line of icons is frozen, although the same icons are also on my desktop and actually working. Also the edge of a window is frozen. Lastly, on the right of the top bar, the little icons like battery, wifi, etc. are frozen as shadows underneath all the working icons... Basically everything is working right, just "copies" of the others are frozen...

Check in System Preferences>Universal Access and see if Zoom is on. If you have toddlers or cats this can accidentally turned on by hitting a group of keys that include Option + Command + 8.
To prevent this being accidentally activated in the future go to System Preferences>Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcuts>Universal Access and uncheck all the boxes.
