Weird lock up in FCP

I'm running FCP 6.0.5 on a Mac Pro dual quad and I've been running into this weird lock up situation. When reconnecting media in any project most of the time everything goes ok. Right click on media>reconnect>search>open>connect. Every now and then the "Reconnect Files" and "Reconnect" dialog boxes will switch places so that "Reconnect Files" is on top and "Reconnect" is behind it. I can click on the "Reconnect" box and it will come back to the front, but from that point on the "Reconnect" box is completely locked up. I can still drag it around the screen but mouse clicks have no affect on anything. The "Reconnect Files" box seems to be ok because I can still skip files and directories and when I click the cancel button it highlights blue, but doesn't do anything (I imagine because the "Reconnect" dialog box is still open?). "Connect" is grayed out because I was never able to select a file from the "Reconnect" dialog box.
The only clue I have as to why this is happening is that it only seems to happen if I switch to another program while FCP is searching for the file to reconnect. Then when I come back to FCP, regardless of where I click on the screen, the two boxes switch position and my only choice is to force quit. It doesn't happen all of the time and I haven't been able to reproduce it 100% of the time so there must be some other variable here. Anyone ever heard of this or have any ideas besides "stay in FCP while it's searching"? It often searches across 5 NAS devices which makes it unreasonable to sit around and wait for that.

I have the EXACT same problem. Have not found a solution
I have tried relaunching Finder, hiding FCP, putting the comp to sleep, pressing esc 5,000 times. apple-Q, apple-w, loading a different project, and various other clicks, dances and gestures.
I get to lose about 15min of work this time, along with my entire project setup. Just lovely.
Just to be clear on the symptom. The reconnect dialog windows swap priority. The fcp-reconnect (gray) window is waiting for the finder-reconnect window to select a file (the finder-reconnect window should have focus), but the gray fcp-reconnect window has the focus instead.
As a result, you can't click on the finder-reconnect window (BEEP< BEEP< BEEP when you click on it). You are now in a catch 22. You can't select a file, and the fcp-reconnect window won't operate until you do, and it has the focus.
EDIT: Oh, i had switched to iTunes and back when this occurred.

Weird video display in FCP but normal in QT

Okay, this is getting really tiresome now. Final Cut Studio has become weird on an Intel Core Duo iMac. When the symptoms first appeared FCP would not launch at all. It would quit on startup with a window to send a report to Apple. On that occasion I trashed and reinstalled the entire FC Studio.
Following this the application opened so I assumed everything was OK. But then I went to import some AVCHD clips and FCP displayed the video with some weird looking semi-negative, metallic crappy special effects look. So ... I replaced the OS and reinstalled FCP Studio. Everything worked OK.
Now, a day later, I go to import some more AVCHD clips and we are back to the weird video. Yet the same file opens normally in QuickTime. There are two screenshots of the same frame to illustrate this. One from FCP and one from QuickTime.

Has anyone seen this before or have any ideas because I am not going to devote another ten hours to reinstalling the poxy thing?

Camera files are imported with Log & Transfer from SD cards with the AVCHD camera, P2 cards from the Panasonic HPX, from archived files of the complete card contents or imported from existing Capture Scratch files.
The point is that the MacBook Pro behaves normally and the iMac used to. I have no idea why the same version of FCP on the iMac has suddenly become strange. Even stranger is that after reinstalling both system and FCP it all worked correctly and shortly afterwards the same weird stuff started again.
Also, as mentioned, the Capture Scratch QT.mov file that FCP creates following a Log & Transfer reads normally with QuickTime - and iMovie - on the iMac.

Ease-in ease-out weirdness in motion tab FCP

I've been doing a lot of animating stills in FCP by keyframing SCALE and CENTRE in the MOTION TAB of the VIEWER. I discovered the EASE-IN and EASE-OUT options by control-clicking the end key frames, but when I play back the animated clip, it does these weird lateral curve motions despite my only animating the still in a straight line. How do you ease-in a still and ease-out without this weird motion action occurring? Anyone sorted that? Do I have to use *After Effects* or Motion, or can it be done well in FCP ?

Try moving the image with Anchor Point instead. Some time ago, Tom Wolsky posted the following reply to a thread that is long-gone:
+Let's say you're zooming into a picture. You're starting say a scale of 20% centered on the screen and you going to scale up to 100%, and as you zoom in (scale) you want to move to the upper right corner of the image. Scaling takes place around the anchor point. The anchor point is normally the center of the image. As you move toward the upper right you're actually scaling around a point that's moving farther and farther away from where you're going. This causes overshoot, especially if the scale and center values are eased. (Scaling is not exponential anyway so this exacerbates the problem.) If you animate the anchor point to move opposite the center point, the scaling will continue to happen around the anchor point, which is now moving with you toward where you're going. It'll give you a bit better motion, but you still have to give yourself a little wiggle room.+
+Let me give you some numbers. I'm starting with an image that's 3600x2670. At it's start the image is centered and scaled to 24%. I can't go all the way to 20% because I'll get overshoot on the start when I put on easing because scale is logarithmic, while center is arithmetic. At the end of the motion the image is scaled to 100. It's center is now -1335, 932. (Again because of overshoot I can't go much closer to the edge.) Easing is set for center and scale, and as I'm sure you've seen you get the image sliding off the screen even with leaving the slack that I did. Now add the anchor point animation. Set the start keyframe at 0,0 the same as the center point. Set the end keyframe to 1335, -932, the opposite of the center keyframe and you'll get a motion that stays in the screen. If you could set easing for the anchor point it would be even smoother, but that's not practical in the FCP interface. You get a little snaking effect at the end. All in all pretty inadequate for good motion control.+
+I tried it Motion as well. The first problem is the application can't handle the image at full resolution. It could do the movement with scale animation and a motion path behavior. It was kind of adequate, but easing on the scaling was pretty poor and didn't achieve good results.+
+A major issue in both applications is the the scaling starts quickly and gets slower and slower. This is because of the lack of exponential scaling, and until this is addressed neither application will be more than barely adequate at best when it comes to large scale motion control. Basically neither of them are acceptable for professional work on large format, large scale images. I won't even go into how totally inadequate FCP is for easing stop and go motion.+

Weird Locking Scenario .....

Today I ran into a wierd situation, the application started getting hang int DEv env. I found
that one developer's session on blocked by himself. Actually We are using connection pooling
in our application and when the dev try to launch one specific screen then it happens. And
the weird thing is I can't kill the blocking session because its active BUT I can't even see
the SQL which it is working on or any kind of lock. Here is some of my work:

I have killed the blocking session (1521) but still its not releasing the locks. There is no SQL
in V$SQLAREA related to the SQL_ID of blocking session (1n1s3p836t1xx). There is an active transaction
related to the blocking session:

I cant see anything inside this transaction because then COMMAND column is 0 in v$session for this session and

I think this has something to do with connectio pooling, but I cant trace it because App create
and destroy the connection on fly AND dont ask me to set some CLIENT_IDENTIFIED in app, its
not possible now.

Is this a unix environment? You give no relevant info. If it is a unix environment and if you are connecting dedicated then determine the blocking sessions (killed session) OS process id. Then on the box, do a kill -9 <pid> PMON, in a couple of minutes, will go in and clean this process up and release the lock and the blocked session will continue.
If not the above environment, please state your environment.
In addition, what form of connection pooling are you using? I have seen some poor custom connection pooling implementations in my day that when transactions didn't finish right away the app would get the connection again and start processing another trans until they piled up.
Bottom line, we need to know about the environment as well, not just the situation.

Text in Hebrew has gone really weird in Motion and FCP - please help!

Hi,
I have been working in a project for a long time, and produced hundreds of simple titles in Motion in Hebrew. The font I have used throughout is Arial Rounded MT Bold.
In the latest title I added one text object and made it Italic. Since then, all my Hebrew text in this title and now any previous title I open appears really weird (the vowles are disjoined from the consonants). I have turned off the Italics option on all the titles but it still does the same thing.
This occurs even in a brand new title, where I paste the Hebrew directly into a new text object.
I am desperate for someone to help me, as I have a tight deadline on this one. All previous titles I open appear the same, even though they were fine in the past. I have tried deleting the preference file.
I am using Motion 4 (FCS 3) on a iMac bought last year, quad core intel.

The font doesn't match what I was using before. I have no idea what it was using previously, but at least I can proceed from here. My previous projects have all been output to movie files so even if the motion files are now messed up, it's not the end of the world!

Weird Locked Files/Permissions/Dock/Etc

I have some sort of odd locked file/permissions problem (I think).
About a year ago, I seem to have done something to my permissions or locked files that I can't seem to fix. I have a variety of disparate symptoms, including applications that won't work or can't be installed/deleted because support or preference files are locked or can't be changed, a need to repeatedly reauthenticate with a password just to move files from one folder to the next, an inability to turn off file sync for mobile me, dock item changes that go away whenever I reboot, locked files that continually reopen in Preview, having to manually delete and reinstall apps like Preview apparently because of locked preference files, printers that won't work because of locked files until I delete all and reinstall, software that won't run properly or fails to launch at all on double click, etc.
It is almost like a ghost in the machine problem because the problems are relatively varied.
I've tried disk utility etc to repair permissions and none of the repairs work (I keep getting the same errors, copied below). I've tried a complete reinstall of the OS, repair permissions from the OS X restore disk, etc. and nothing seems to help.
This is happening on a Mac Pro 1,1 (3.0 GHz), running 10.7.4 with all updates through today and with a Radeon 4870 card, and 9 GB of properly matched ram. Everything else works pretty well and I have no similar problems on my wife's 2011 iMac, my MacBookAir i5, etc.
I'm thinking that there is some sort of locked file or permissions problem that is not getting fixed correctly and that there might be some trick to fixing it.

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Back up all data now. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to its present state
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:

Next, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the Recovery screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

Weird Audio Problem in FCP

Latest version of FCP.
I received a mp3 voice over from my voice talent and when I it in my sequence I would hear two distinct "pops" in the audio at two parts of the voice over. Every time I played the audio I would hear the pop at the same place.
I opened up the same file in Sound Booth because I wanted to see if I could visually see the pop and maybe remove but on the first playback I heard no pop at all. I then opened the same mp3 in Soundtrack Pro and I did not hear any pops at all there either.
Same mp3 file - in FCP pops and in Sound Booth or Soundtrack Pro none.
Any ideas as to what could be the cause / explanation?

Do NOT use MP3 files in FCP. Convert the MP3 to match your FCP Sequence settings. Typically that would be AIFF format at 48khz, 16 bit.

Just the other day, I started to download a MMORPG game (Lord of the Rings Online), but stopped it halfway through, and then uninstalled it as I no longer wanted to go through with it. Since then, the laptop (running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit) has prevented me
from doing certain things that makes me believe it is some kind of registry error.
I cannot download anything from the internet now as it tells me that I have insufficient permission (which is crap since I am the administrator), and when I try to put certain things into the recycle bin, it tells me I don't have the right permission. Also,
I can no longer access several programs, including ProFantasy's Campaign Cartographer (which says, The item referred to by this shortcut cannot be accessed. You may not have the appropriate permissions), and the short cut for Neverwinter Online. When I open
a folder I haven't opened since then on the desktop, it says, You currently do not have permission to access this folder. Click Continue to permanently get access to this folder. Then when I click Continue, it shows the browser window fill up with green, as
if it's changing something, and I think it's in the security settings.
I tried having GeekSquad remote into my computer, but again, I cannot download anything from the internet, even in Safe Mode With Networking, as it says I have insufficient permission, so I can't download the applet needed for GeekSquad to get access. I
ran MalwareBytes Anti-Root Kit, which found and destroyed the remains for the crapware weDownload Manager, and Kaspersky found and removed some malware labeled, not-a-virus:HEUR.AdWare.Win32.Yotoon.heur.
I can't even begin to guess what the frell happened, and why the UAC seems to have locked me out of certain things, or how to change it back. A system restore is out of the question, and it's been too long since I backed up the harddrive (about two or three
months), so I can't restore previous settings, I think without losing stuff I've already worked on.
Nor am I computer savvy enough to figure it out on my own. Please help me, Obi Wan Microsoft! You're my only hope!

Could you turn off UAC? Try it to check the result.
1. Open User Account Control Settings by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type uac, and then click Change User Account Control settings.
2.To turn off UAC, move the slider to the Never notify position, and then click OK. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. You will need to restart your
computer for UAC to be turned off.

Weird Locked Files issue

Hi I have a strange problem with locked files on OS X. Somehow I have ended up with 2 files on my desktop which I just can't get rid of.
They have a filesize of zero KB so I guess they are not proper files (they have the icon & name of two mp3s I have)
When I try and delete them I get a message saying they are in use by a program. I have tried rebooting, closing all running programs, still same issue.
If I do "get info" I can see that the file is locked, but then option to untick it is greyed out even after I unlock the padlock in the lower right corner.
I then looked on google for suggestions and tried deleting them with the terminal (using 'rm') and I get the message "Override for <filename>?" I say yes and then it says "Operation not permitted". I also tried this in single user mode and it said "Read only file system" and also didn't work.
I'm at a bit of a loss, does anyone have any ideas how I can get rid of those two files?

P.s.: Don't follow the part where he creates the file. Just follow the part where he deletes the file and make sure you replace the file name he specified with the file name that you saw on those files.

FCP settings lock

Hi All,
Is there a way to lock settings on FCP? For example is I want to only have it just do DV NTSC? I don't want others changing it to PAL, HDV, or HDTV.

Setting up separate User Accounts would be the best way, as Michael has already suggested. But if you really want to keep everything the same from one session or project to the next, locate the main Final Cut Pro preference file, right-click on it and select "Get Info" and click the LOCKED checkbox. Preferences changes from then on will default back to whatever state they were in when you locked the file on each and every launch of FCP.

Child process dies, nfs locks not released, webserver hangs...

I have Sun One 6.1 sp 11 on a solaris 10 ldom.
The server is configured to write logs access and error to /logs which is an NFS mount to a separate solaris 10 box. The logging to an NFS mount is a business requirement.
Sun JWS is configured to have two httpd processes and the watchdog to restart them if one should fail.
Every now and then, about once a day (it varies), one of the child processes will die with messages like this in the error log: (1949 is the wdog pid)

At this point the webserver will not respond. The processes (2*httpd, 1*wdog) are running but do not respond. The access log shows a weird lock with output from pfiles:

But what I'm really curious about is why the process is dying in the first place. Anyone seen "status 37" before, or know where I can look it up? I couln't google up any reference on what it might mean...

In this situation, the SIGLOST signal is posted to the process. The default action for the SIGLOST signal is to terminate the process.
For you to recover from this state, you must restart any applications that had files open at the time of the failure. Note that the following can occur.
- Some processes that did not reopen the file could receive I/O errors.
- Other processes that did reopen the file, or performed the open operation after the recovery failure, are able to access the file without any problems.
Thus, some processes can access a particular file while other processes cannot.

OD Accounts keep locking

Hello
We have 10.4.8 Server setup with Open Directory and XSan 1.4 for home directories, but have some strange problems with user accounts locking at random intervals, we thought this was down to user error but seems more then that, we have to enable the account again then reset the password for users to be able to log in again.
We have a policy in OD of 4 attempts to enter the correct password or accounts become locked. Our client macs are setup with 10.4.8 and latest security updates.
Its more of a problem when night classes are held as we are not available to reset passwords and staff have no way of resetting them for students as we cannot lock workgroup manager down to just let them enable accounts and change passwords.

Hello everyone,
We have a weird locked account issue in our domain. The user accounts keeps on locking daily, sometimes even a few times a day and sometimes it works for a week or two. The user does not even have to log on for the account to lock, it sometimes locks just by starting their (Win 7 x32) laptop.
We have done a trace on the locking and it does come from their laptop and not any other source, however the logs provide no real clues as of why it locks.
Any ideas? They have no saved credentials of any kind, and I find it weird that it locks even before they log on.

JWS weird Authentication deadlock on HttpUrlConnection with response 401

Right after writing it all down (offline), I found the *bug here* just before posting.
I'll post it anyway as it was, 'cause it costed me time and this won't be wasted if it comes usefull for someone else.
The only pending questions are: does anybody know a workaround for the bug? And why does this only happen when having a dedicated thread and not running in EventDispatcher?
Do you think posting in Swing forum may be usefull to get a solution with connection running in EventDispatcher and another thread listening for button pressure?

Everything goes fine until request successeds, I have problems when server returns 401, first test ends correctly: I throw an exception telling me 'login failed, wrong username or password, check credentials' and this gets written in my result area.
But something gets locked in the Authentication infrastructure, than on, if I test again with wrong credentials it freezes waiting, If I test with right credential everything is fine ('cause it doesn't ask for Auth).
I've got my own Authenticator because on my SSO server I must return null (jws doesn't manage correctly SSO auth), but I wanna keep asking for proxy credentials, I though it could be it and went back to default one (and to null one), nothing changed (except annoying, not working, authentication mask).
Everything works fine if I use a single thread solution, but this means everything gets done in EventDispatcher and can't be stopped, I don't want it like this.
I've notice this other thing: if I call notifyAll at the and of done() method it goes fine on standard JRE, but I get IllegalMonitorState in JWS.
There's just one instance running, anyhow the connection code itself is multithread tested (I've run thousands at same time to test server-load).
Connection goes like this (everything in HTTPS):
- ask for homepage: it is under SSO, so i get a MOVED and destination url contains an SSO token
- read destination url and go there adding username and password (I'm using GET, final version will use POST for security reasons): i get a MOVED to login success page and go there to 'activate' SSO session and get my cookie OR (wrong credentials) I get 401, that is my problem. I can even get MOVED to other url (having account locked or other SSO error), this has no impact on my problem, just reporting to assure you problem is just as described.
Obviously homepage request goes always fine, you just get stack on second part when getting 401 for second time, 'cause first one left a resource locked.
Any suggestions?

I got it! It works for most cases (it works for mine for sure, doesn't work if you're talking with many servers, I suppose), may be refined (for multi-thread, multi-server, etc..). After getting response code 401 (in the connection code I did not post) I just call:

I have some Sony EX1 footage here in which 20 out of 500 QT files FCP will play the audio out of sync by either 14 or 19 frames (picture lags) - when shooting no changes were made to settings which were as follows:
1080/25P HQ 16-bit 48Khz
weird thing #1: only FCP will exhibit the out of sync problem, QT or even quickview in the OS X finder will play them back fine ...
weird thing #2: once I export the footage without re-syncing it it will then play fine again in QT/finder and will sync fine in FCP - yay! - no... it will beach ball and/or lag/crash FCP/QT/finder once I attempt any sort of movement/scrubbing in any of the timelines
attempting to work with the original un-synced footage and unlinking the audio (and correctly syncing it) as a workaround has failed as whenever I put on any video effect/transition or whatever the effected part will sync correctly and my smarty pants re-sync therefore makes it out of sync again ! arrrrgh!
Basically, anytime I effect or export it the sync issue goes away, but I am left with crashy/corrupted files ...
Any suggestions ?

This is not correct but it's easy to arrive at that conclusion. The two clips aree not the same length by your definition: *the audio falls behind by the time it gets to the end*
Mark the place where the audio ends, mark the place where the video ends. They are different and that difference is a simple matter of subtracting one timecode location form the other. This means the audio was shot at a different sampling rate than that with which it was captured. I do not know anything about the DSR400 camera or your deck, my Sonys are different, but you should be able to ascertain the sampling rate of the audio by checking the data display. If, indeed, it's 48k, you have sent the audio to a separate folder than the video and your disk cannot keep up. But that sync difference is not absolute so it's going to be different each time you play it back.
