Weird "Mac Help" Issue

I have 2 comps always running (when I'm awake anyway); a G5 and a G4 networked with a router. Both are running 10.4.11.
When accessing "Mac Help" on the G5, the boot drive for the G4 mounts through the network and "Help" is accessed through the G4! This ONLY happens when trying to access "Help" for OEM apps like the Finder, Safari, QuickTime, etc.
So to prevent that, today I put the G4 to sleep to see what happens.
Then when accessing Help a window opens saying <AFP Connection Status - Looking up "Eric Nelson's G4">. I then have to hit Cancel and I get the Beachball for a minute before (in this
case) iTunes "Help" is accessed on the G5 as it should. I hoped that would "train" it to use the Help on the G5 but nope! 3rd party apps like CS3, VLC, Freeway Pro, etc, etc, all use local (on the G5) "Help". Also, if I access "Help" on the G4, everything is fine.
I deleted com.apple.help.plist on the G5 and it didn't fix this. I repaired permissions, and ran Applejack. Turning off AppleTalk and Personal File sharing did not prevent this from happening.
I did not migrate or clone the G4 to the G5 or copy OEM appz like Safari or itunes from the G4 to the G5.
I see no System pref for Application Sharing like I used to. (maybe that was OS 9?)
Any ideas on what is going on and how to fix this?
Thanks
Eric

I'm not using Internet Sharing or Web Sharing.
I have only Personal file Sharing and Printer Sharing turned on.
On the G4 Finder, from the pulldown menu "Go"->Network the G5 is listed, Library, and Servers. Under Servers is the G4.
On the G5 it's the opposite.
Hope that helps anyone who might have an idea!

  • WRT600N weird MAC Address issue

I've had the Linksys WRT600N for several months. One day the internet connection stopped working, after I power cycled it, I called support and they had me change the router to clone MAC address after that it worked. If I took off the cloned MAC the internet wouldnt work. So I got curious after that and I restored the router the settings file I had backed up previously. I tried my internet connection and everything worked. No clone MAC address, however, after about a month it stopped again. The issue was making sure clone mac address was on. My question is why does that keep happening there shouldnt be a reason that it would need my computers mac if my isp doesnt need me to do thaa. (ISP = Optimium) Has anyone had this problem or know what the cause is?

You have to tell what you did exactly if it did not work.
Generally: many ISPs (most cable ISPs) only grant you a single public IP address, i.e. a single device connected to their service. Most do this by storing the MAC address of the device connected to the modem. If you connect a different device with a different MAC address into the modem they won't accept it. You won't get an IP address. You don't have internet. Only the device with the MAC address stored (or a modified MAC address set to the stored MAC address) will have internet.
Some ISPs reset the stored MAC address if you call them. With a few ISPs this is the only option.
Most ISPs reset the MAC address after a few hours of inactivity or in fixed intervals.
Some ISPs recognize if you reset the modem and reset the MAC address then.
After it is reset you can connect a different device and it will get the IP address.
Now, if your internet at some point does not work and for a test you connect the computer directly to the modem and you get internet then, at that moment you already have locked in MAC address of the computer and you have to use the MAC address clone on the router.
Thus, if you need the MAC address clone or not depends on what you did when exactly after how much time of inactivity when the internet did not work anymore.

When I try to use Mac Help or any other help menu, the help window opens up but it is empty.  How do I resolve this issue?

Try moving these files to the Trash one at a time and test (but don't empty yet.)
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.LSSharedFileList.pl ist
If doing this doesn't help, then navigate to this location and delete the cache (but not the enclosing folder.)

  • Mac System Issue pop up window has disabled Safari.  Please help?

I clicked on a video on FaceBook & ended up with a pop up that says I have a serious Mac system issue & I need to call this phone number immediately.
I can't do anything at all with Safari now.  Has anyone had this issue?  Know how to get rid of it?  I

Force quit Safari and relaunch it with the Shift key held down. If that doesn’t work, disconnect the computer from the Internet and try again.

  • Having Mac Help Opening Issues

I read your posts on how to solve this. For awhile it helped. Then it happened again and did as instructed and it hasn't come back all the way. I can open the Mac Help in certain Applications like Appleworks,Quicken, and a couple others but all else is blank. Any ideas. I am on a G4 Ibook OS 10.4.

    Hi Beth,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Is this what you did in the past to correct it?
Go to Users/Your_Name/Library/Preferences and delete the following files:
    com.apple.help.plist
    com.apple.helpui.plist
    com.apple.helpviewer.plist
Next go to Users/Your_Name/Library/Caches and delete the folder:
    com.apple.helpui
This is what corrects the problem in 10.3, Panther. I had thought the problem had been corrected in a later version of 10.4. Have you updated to the latest version of 10.4?

  • Help with Mac Help Viewer

Hello to whoever is looking at this posting. This may be somewhat out of the norm, but for some odd reason, if I ever try to use the Help function in finder, nothing displays. I just get a blank screen with the "ask a question column", but it acts like it is trying to load continuously. I have to force quit to exit.
Does anyone know why this would be or if there is a specific software update to rectify this problem. This machine is still under 1 year basic warrenty, would it make sense to contact support for this? I have no other software conflicts which is the weird thing. Im using Mac OSX Version 10.3.9.
Thank you for any help with this help issue!
    Andrew

Help Viewer crashes or shows blank....
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?[email protected]@.6897a2ae http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/helpviewer.html
This is a common bug in Panther. The solution to this problem is simple though:
    • (~ means your home directory)
Go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete the following files.....
    com.apple.help.plist
com.apple.helpui.plist (you may or may not have this one).
    com.apple.helpviewer.plist
Next go to ~/Library/Caches and delete the folder......
    com.apple.helpui
Log out and log in. If the problem is gone, empty the trash. If not, put everything back.
or you can open MacHelp directly from .....
    /Library/Documentation/Help and it works fine.

  • Mac Help failed again

The Mac Help system on my computer fails often. Before, I have been told to drag help cache files to trash and shut down and restart. The help cache files appear to be gone. If I ask for help I get a blank screen. Do others have this problem? why is this so vulnerable. Help should be one of the most reliable parts of an Operating System .

    Hi, brooktrout.
See my "Troubleshooting Help Viewer" FAQ for comprehensive advice on fixing issues with Help Viewer, including the issue you mention.
As FYI, you should update to a more recent version of Mac OS X than 10.4.5 — the version shown in your profile. The version of Help Viewer in later releases seems to have solved some long-standing problems.
    Good luck!

the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. (when putting ipod into mac) help,. now have no music on my ipod. how do i sort this out?

    - Verify the file and disk formats on your camcorder and on your friend computer whether they support what you want to do. Also, if you are using a specific application to do the task, you may need to verify an application whether it supports the file format (e.g. MPEG4, Apple Intermediate Codec).
    - Verify the device cable type whether Mac OS X 10.4.x supports.
    - Verify the device compatibility with Mac OS X 10.4.x.
    - Check an available firmware or driver for the camcorder that has developed after Mac OS X 10.4.4.
    - Try diagnosing and repairing local hard disk and camcorder's drive directory.
    - Verify disks permissions issue.
    - Verify whether the disk is TOO warm or cold to read.
    - If every troubleshooting does not solve the issue, consider to reformat the camcorder drive.

  • Mac Help and Freezing

Hello, I had some trouble with Mac Help yesterday - as in it's gone! - and I've tried the troubleshooting tips, but still no Mac Help. I don't know if probable cause is constant freezing over the last two days? Today is better (hence I can type), but I guess it is only a matter of time. The computer only freezes when plugged in and hooked up to internet, no problems when on battery (don't have Airport at home). Need Mac Help for help - but it isn't there and system keeps freezing in safari and discussions. Please, please some info?!?!?

The fact it is only freezing when you are plugged in
and hooked up to the internet says something about
how you are hooked up to the internet may be at
issue. What method of internet connection do you
have? Is it a standard telephone line, an ethernet
    or USB modem?
Also have you backed up your data? Some
troubleshooting steps may require risky operations to
the hard disk, so we want to make sure you are backed
    up first before we proceed.
Hi, and thanks for the reply. I haven't been able to respond, because - of course - every time I do the Mac freezes halfway through my message.
I have a modem and broadband at home, although I have recently purchased an Airport Card, which I haven't used yet. The problem is that I am going abroad for three months on Saturday (which is why I bought the card to access the school's WiFi where I'm going), and I doubt I'll be able to do much before then.
I only really have iTunes on it that I might not be able to get back. Although I have iPod rip which I have used. My guarantee from where I bought my iBook doesn't run out until October - so in theory I can go to them when I return.
The freezing only occurs when I'm attached to the modem (though not neccesarily online), and seems to be better when it only runs off the battery. It is very confusing. It also seems to freeze more often when I type - it's not so bad when I'm just browsing.
I'm writing this on a friend's computer to get all the info out there. I will check the responses but don't know if/when I will be able to type again as it's such a lottery...But I really would appreciate any help you can offer - and any advice about backing up my information.
    Many thanks,
    Zachary

  • Mac help menu

My new macbook's mac help menu doesnt respond at all. I am told it has to do with OS X issues. I have been using Macs since the LC 475 and been through a Performa, PowerPC, IMac, G5 ( at work), an I book G3, an I book G4, and now a macbook. It's always worked, but now...
Also, I am only a user and compeletely non-tech a step by step idiot's guide will be of great use...
p.s - and when i called the small reseller in our small town, he guffaws and says - why do you need help? you have been a user for so long.

Thank you for the reply. I have been using the local reseller as the call centre, and they dont take this seriously enough.
Perhaps i should call apple themselves - an expensive propisition from India, so i might just do the reboot when i have some time free..i anyway need to import stuff from the older mac
one more question ) and i dont know if i am breaking convention but i am a newcomer, so forgive me
also, are there any intelligent, user friendly no nerdish on getting icaht video to work -
I reconfgured my netgear router in a text chat mode with my brother in the us. He is able to video chat with another cousin in bangalore with the same router, but mine just wouldnt do it. we changed the port cconfgiurations suggested on the discussuions list and all that....
Now my cousin says i have to reboot twice from the and there are ni links on the web. does it mean taking the netgear router off the wall?
Or will it get better if stick ethernet cable directy. any help would be gratefully received

  • Mac Help "Support Articles" won't load

After searching for a topic in Mac Help, the resulting page has two sections: "Help Topics" and "Support Articles".
When I try to access one of the Support Articles, I get this error message:
The requested resource (/kb//apps/helpviewer/index) is not available
It appears that the folder "helpviewer" containing the file "index" is unavailable. After diligent searching I can't find a folder called "helpviewer" on my computer.
Test: Disconnect the computer from the internet and open a Help topic. "Help Topics" are listed, but there are no "Support Articles". This indicates that the Support Articles are on a server somewhere, and that I can download the article list but not individual articles. It appears that either the index file is inaccessible on the server or it is failing to be downloaded to my computer.
Is the fault on my computer or on the server? And what can be done about it?

I don't think that it's either your computer's or the server's fault. This happens sometimes when the support article has been updated, deleted, or re-issued and the older (referenced) version is no longer available. I just tried it and it worked with the article I asked for, but...
I've had this happen a couple of times; when that happens, I'd suggest going to the actual Apple support site and do a search there.
Edit: The "kb" refers to k nowledge b ase articles.

  • Mac Help problem

    Hello,
Since my upgrade from Tiger.3 to Tiger.4, my Mac Help doesn't perform anymore. On advise from other Mac users, I've already tried deselecting the "Include Product Support searches", but still, when I write a query, I get no feedback.
Does anyone have an idea of what it could be, and what I could do to fix it?

  • Mac Help

Whenever I try to go to Mac Help in the Finder a black window comes up, and stays for a few seconds and simply disappears. The only way I can get to the mac help is by putting some word in the search window above Mac Help.
However I would prefer to be able to go to the Mac Help window directly with the options given there.
    It simply wont stay on.

Try deleting the folder com.apple.helpui, it's here:
    Your Home folder > Library > Caches > com.apple.helpui
If that doesnt work, it seems like this site has been helping a lot of people with this issue:

Saw your comments on this in the post about the 1.9 bios for neo2platty ....
I can confirm that My MAC address issue was caused by the bios that you sited in your comments....all F's were written to My nvidia lan too...
only solution from what I have read is too rma it...'bummer'
just thought You would like to know....  Your not alone

I had the same problem yesterday and after many hours searching the web I ended up with this post that made me really desperate... But I didn't give up and while trying a new bios flash because of random crashes when in the bios, I noticed the obvious: you can change the MAC address when flashing
use the last version of the dos flasher with the parameters /nvmac:xxxxxxxxxxxx/wb after the name of the bios file; it's explained if you ask the help with the /help parameter. You can find the mac address on a stick on the parallel port.
