Weird mac non-start up issue

My Mac Pro crashed in After Effects yesterday. SInce then it will start up in WIndows7 under Boot Camp but won't run properly in OSX. I've swapped out the hard drive for another system drive but I get the Grey Screen of Death, that also happens when I try to boot from the System DVD. I've removed all PCI cards and external devices. Even with no hard disks in at all and just booting from DVD gets the hang screen. I tried PRAM and removed the battery but no joy.
Holding Alt at start up gives me four options.
1 Current system
2 Old System
3 Install DVD
4 Windows Boot Camp
They're all on separate internal drives.
1 Current system lets me login and gets as far as displaying the desktop then either jumps back to the login screen again or crashes to a blue screen and the spinning wheel
2 Old System gives me the Grey screen of death at the apple logo
3 Install DVD gives me the Grey screen of death at the apple logo.
4 Windows boots fine
What's confusing is the that as Windows boots fine it can't be a hardware thing. But if it's a mac system software thing then surely the DVD should boot OK? And how come both system disks don't work suddenly and in different ways?

Your OS (I can't find OS minimim requirement) may not boot from DVD or any system that doesn't have drivers, and it may be it requires 10.6.5.
Did you ever boot before with this card and DVD or try with less than 10.6.4?
Still, you have another graphic card either installed or handy, so you can boot w/o the Q4000 installed.
The last SL DVD was only 10.6.3, only $25 @ Amazon if need be.
You / I never boot Disk Warrior from CD, doesn't have drivers, slow, would be an older OS build, etc. which should be v. 4.2+ also.
A couple people commented on Quadro 4000 performance in this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12758519&
CS5 5.03
Do you have ATI 5770 or 4870 alongside?
Does it work with just the Quadro?

  • Help! Mac Mini Start up issues

Help! I've had my Mac Mini since about November 2005. I've never had an issue with it, until now. I realize that there are other topics with this same issue, and I've looked through them, but I'm not sure if my problem is the same.
All of a sudden, I can't seem to get it to start up correctly. After hitting the power button, the screen will display a folder with an alternating finder icon and question mark. I checked the manual that came with the Mini itself, and followed the suggestion of holding down the option key at start up. When I do that, the screen only shows a back button and a forward, no hard disk icon to select, so I get stuck at that screen.
I was able to start up the computer by following the second suggestion in the manual of holding down the Command, Option, P and R keys until it makes the start up noise twice. After that, I replaced the keyboard/mouse from wireless to USB and the computer started up just fine for a day or two, and now it's back to requiring me to hold the Command, Option, P and R keys when starting up. I also tried to avert the problem by selecting the start up disk in the system preferences, and that didn't help either.
    I have two questions:
    1. Could this be due to a keyboard issue? The one I was using was a wireless Microsoft one (only thing I could find locally) and after reverting to the old keyboard off of my old iMac, the problem seemed to be solved, but has since returned (the keyboard off of the old iMac isn't reliable either).
    2. Is there anyway to fix this without losing everything on my hard drive?
(note: this is running with a G4 processor, not the intel based one).
    Thank you

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The alternating finder and question mark during attempted startup is an indicator that the system can't find the MacOS install on the hard drive, or that the hard drive is failing. The fact that when you started up with the Option key down you did not see the internal drive as a startup option also points to that issue.

No, this isn't a keyboard issue. Keyboards that are faulty or not entirely compatible will simply prevent you from changing the way the system boots, or from properly using the system once it's running. Swapping to the old keyboard is likely only associated with this problem because you also reset the parameter RAM at the same time.
    2. Is there anyway to fix this without losing everything on my hard drive?
The problem is that if the hard drive is failing, your data may well be already corrupt, but a good first place to start is to find your original install disk - the one that came with the system - and insert that. Then reboot the system, and hold the C key down to try and get it to boot to the install disk. If that doesn't work, try holding the Option key down again to get to that same boot loader screen you had before, (with the install disk still inserted). That should give you the option to select the install disk and get the system started up from that.
If the boot loader screen still shows no available drive even with the correct install disk in the drive, then chances are that the hard drive has failed, though it may be the optical drive/hard drive stack has come disconnected.
If you can boot to the install disk, open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and see if the internal drive is shown. If it is, select it and then click 'Repair Disk'. That will try and identify any errors and if any are found, will attempt to repair them. If you get errors that it can't fix (typically it will report 'error on exit') then the drive has probably become corrupted and you'll either need a good utility such as Alsoft's Disk Warrior to try and fix it, or perform an Erase and Install to reformat the drive and install MacOS from scratch. This latter option will wipe your data of course, so should not be done unless you don't mind loosing your data, or have tried everything else and have no alternative!

  • Narrow down start up issue need experienced/knowledgeble Mac Expert

    Hi,
I have spoken with two level 2 mac specialists and both have concluded that I am having a 3rd party software issue with my Mac Pro 3.0. The issue is it takes 5 minutes for my Mac to boot up from start up/restart. Here is my question; in OS9 to narrow down an issue I could simply drag an Extension on to the desktop and restart to see if the issue continued. Since this issue that I am having is a 3rd party conflict in start up is there a way to remove or 'disable' 3rd party software so basically the system thinks it's not there so I can narrow this issue down to who is the problem child? I really don't want to trash all my 3rd party software to figure this out.
I have recently done a Archive and Install from the install CD 10.5 and the start up was fine. Then when I update to 10.5.4 or 10.5.5 the long start up issue is back. So I am concluding that something is not 10.5+ compatible.
Look forward to someone knowing the answer to my question.
    Thanks.

Hi Francine thanks for your input. If I'm not mistaken the Shift key is 'Safe Mode' and that is great but I need to either remove one 3rd party software package at a time or be able to add one at a time until I find the ugly step child. And I don't think Safe Mode will allow that.
I did try the Verbose mode which was pretty cool to see however once it kicks on the video card and goes to the blue screen that is the transition screen after the Apple and before the desktop I lose the verbose read out and at the blue screen is where it hangs for 4 minutes. So unfortunately that didn't work. I really need to know if I can take out a key 'Component' from a specific folder that will not allow a 3rd party to register and then if it's not it simply place it back in the folder and that software is back in business. I am amazed that with today's technology first, that the computer doesn't tell you what the issue is and second that no one has come up with a way to trouble shoot when things do go as planned. Sigh. Any other recommendations? Anyone....Bueller....Bueller?

What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.

    HI,
when i try to start up my SAP (ABAP+JAVA) system, server processes fail to start. Below is the trace file.
Though it says missing file jvmx.jar, not sure if this is the reason for the start up issue.

  • MAJOR Start-up Issues:  Can my imac be saved?

    Hello all-
I sure hope someone can help me. I am really worried about the state of my imac. It is only ONE YEAR old and has always been maintained with the latest updates.
Quick background: A few weeks ago, while in screensaver mode, I returned to my mac to find a white screen with a folder and a question mark. I had never seen this before! It was frozen. I had to force shut down by holding the button on back. Since that time, the same thing has sporadically happened when the computer was in screensaver mode. In the last few days the problem has worsened with start up issues. Yesterday, when i started up the computer I kept getting just a blank white screen and what sounded like "a slow revving" of the disc several times and then nothing. After continually trying to restart (including in Safe Mode) eventually I got the apple logo and it started. When that happened, I immediately backed up everything for fear my hard drive is dying and then began to troubleshoot.
What I've tried: After looking through the threads I have tried a number of suggestions.
    - I repaired the Disk using First Aid (it says all was Okay)
    - I repaired permissions
    - I disconnected all cords & reset the SMC
    - I booted from the disc & ran the Extended Apple Hardware Test (it said all appears Okay)
After doing these things last night, the computer started up several times just fine so I shut it down for the night.... which brings me to this morning!
Start up was MUCH worse than yesterday. Same slow revving sound, white screen and nothing (at least 10 times) - even when trying Safe Mode. Then it worsened to a black screen and no sound at all - as if nothing was happening. I thought it was dead! I unplugged the power cord for 15 seconds and tried again - this changed it back to the white screen and a sound of more revving power. After about 3 tries, I got the apple logo and the spinning wheel for about 2 minutes - then it started!
This is where I am now. I am afraid to turn it off and not sure what else to try. I thought after all I did last night, the problem was fixed. Why does the hardware test and repair disc say all is fine? And why after doing those things last night did it start up numerous times? (and speedy too!) But then this morning I'm back where i started.... ? How can I troubleshoot this problem further?
I would really like to try everything before resorting to taking it in. Money is tight right now.
    GREATLY appreciate any advice!
    Thanks a lot,
    Karen

Warning!! ** (See bottom of post)
New Development: From Disk Utility, I chose to run "verify disk" again. (Somewhere I had read that sometimes, it needs to be run a few times before it will find a problem with the disk).
Sure enough! This time I got errors and it suggested I repair the disk!
Errors in verify mode were in RED as follows:
    Invalid index key
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
I then restarted with the system disc, opened First Aid and chose Repair.
The following showed up in RED during the repair process:
    Invalid index key
    Incorrect number of thread records
    Invalid directory item count
volume bit map needs minor repair
    Invalid free block count
    volume header needs minor repair
And finally in GREEN (after 10 min):
    HD Repaired Successfully
** After doing this, and trying to restart, i get the white screen and the spinning wheel indefinitely. (even when i try Safe Mode) It appears I can no longer boot my HD. I wanted to share the errors above incase it brings anyone to any further insight, but I'm not so sure it helped my situation.
    Suggestions?

  • Had CS4 on Power PC Mac (Non Intel) Now have new iMac and trying to install CS6 but won't accept serial number

Had CS4 on Power PC Mac (Non Intel) along with prior Photoshop versions. Now I have new iMac and trying to install CS6 but it won't accept my original serial number (Starts with PSW401, etc.).

I know what you are saying. I had purchased the CS5.5 upgrade, and a week later got the CS6 upgrade. I did this back in 2012. I had a old Mac Power PC which does not allow you to install CS5.5 or CS6 because it was not an intel processor. So even though I had the upgrades I never installed them. I waited until my old MAC died which it did this past weekend. And now that I have a new iMac I tried to install the new software. All of my past upgrades referenced my original Photoshop that was still resident on my old Mac. But since the install no longer has that reference because of the new computer, it will not accept any of my past serial numbers that it needs for the install.

  • Power Mac G4 Start Up Help Needed

    Hello All-
Our good old G4 Quicksilver is having some start up issues.  Although we have multiple newer Macs for daily use, this tower still houses some older photos/music and is a great computer that we hope to keep running.  It has a new hard drive and has been running well until yesterday.
On power up, two different things have been noted:  sometimes a loud audible siren, followed by flashing power button, then black screen, then gray screen followed by the usual pleasant audible tone, then flashing file with face and question mark.  Or, other times, boot up sounds normal after power on (ie, single pleasant tone), but still the gray screen with face/question mark folder.
After searching the support site, I've tried a few things as follows but to no avail:
    1.  unlplugged all USB peripherals (ie, speakers), and only left the apple keyboard/mouse - tried startup with no different results
    2.  tried to boot into Safe Mode unsuccessfully using Apple techinical procedure
    3.  booted from original Mac OS X Install Disc (10.1), and successfully accessed/run Disk Utility --> First Aid --> able to see and select the existing HD --> Verified the HD (did not have option to run disc Repair, as no listing of problems appeared, just "HD verified").  No changes, though, after trying to restart after this.
What should I do next?  I have my original Apple store purchased OS X Tiger CDs if I need to eventually do an archive and reinstall.  It seems like the computer just needs to be re-told which OS (9 vs. 10) to boot from.
Thanks for any concise help that can be offered!
    Mark

Niel - I just tried Restart with Option key held down to no avail.  Gray screen with blinking question mark folder.
When I did this maneuver, the install disc was still in the drive.  I tried to eject it the way I got it in there in the first place: Control--Option--O--F at start up accessing Open Firmware and "eject cd" command (all which I had to do to remove a music CD to insert the OS X install CD earlier), but now I cannot seem to access Open Firmware - just the gray screen with question folder.
After either your suggested step or my attempt to go to OF, if I leave the gray screen with folder alone, that icon will change to the old Mac SE icon followed by an automatic boot to the Installer disc start screen.
    What do you think?

  • Dequeing from AQ in a non-start activity

    Hi everybody,
    I have the following pattern:
    Process 1:
    <process>
    <enqueue AQ CorrelationID = '1'/>
    </process>
    Process 2:
    <process>
    <receive start activity/>
    <dequeue AQ CorrelationID = '1'/> <!-- plus internal BPEL CorrelationSet -->
    </process>
The idea behind is that I must dequeue from my AQ in a non-start process activity.
So I tried to setup the AQ adapter with a CorrelationID = 'dynamic' (unused) in the AQ adapter wizard and then to modify the CorrelationID dynamically, at runtime, using the AQ header.
As my activity is not a start activity I have setup also an internal BPEL CorrelationSet based on the AQ payload.
Unfortunately my BPEL process is not consuming any message from the queue.
Is there any way to get this working? How may I dequeue from an AQ in an non-start activity?
I'm using the AQ Adapter from BPEL 10.1.2.0.2. Is there any change in BPEL 10.1.3.1.0 concerning this issue?
    Regards,
    amo

Yes you can use your web start application console. To enter data which is required for your application it is better idea to use java application which runs in console mode althou you may try to run console of windows and then read data from its input stream.

I have an iPhone 6.  For the first two weeks my bluetooth worked fine but then started having issues.  Now, although it shows that it is connected to Bluetooth, I can't hear any of the calls.  The radio continues to play.  Please help!

    Hello there, Srushevics.
It sounds like you may be having issues with the connectivity of your iPhone with the Bluetooth in your vehicle. The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps for troubleshooting that Bluetooth connectivity with your iOS device:
If you can’t use a Bluetooth accessory or car kit
To resolve the issue, you'll need to first sign in to iCloud and review your devices:
Sign in to iCloud on your iOS devices and Macs with OS X Yosemite (available this fall).
On one of your devices, tap Settings > Bluetooth and look under My Devices. You'll see all devices that are connected to Bluetooth, but make sure that you see your Apple devices that are signed in to iCloud and are using iOS 8 or OS X Yosemite.
Sign out of your iCloud account from any devices that you don't want to use. To sign out of iCloud on an iOS device, tap Settings > iCloud > Sign Out.
Then, remove any inactive devices from iCloud:
    Sign in to iCloud.com.
    Select Find My iPhone.
Select any devices that aren't active anymore.
Wait for Find My iPhone to stop trying to find the inactive device.
You should see the option to remove this device from your account. Select it to remove the device.
After following the steps above, restart the device with the issue. Then try to use it with your Bluetooth accessory.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Hi i am having a big trouble. MY mac wont start past the gray screen. I tried starting on safe boot, single user user mode , recovery mode. Everything it gets stuck on the gray screen i even tried reinstalling it , same thing what should i do?

MY mac wont start past the gray screen. I tried starting on safe boot, single user user mode , recovery mode. Everything it gets stuck on the gray screen i even tried reinstalling it , same thing what should i do? it lets me reinstall sometimes Sometimes....  it is weird.

    orshikhfromsc,
boot from the Mac OS X Install DVD that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro (by holding down the C key as it starts up). When the desktop appears, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and erase your internal disk. After it’s been erased, reformat it. After it’s been reformatted, exit Disk Utility and reïnstall the version of Mac OS X from that DVD onto your internal disk. After that version of Mac OS X has been reïnstalled, boot from your internal disk and run Software Update to get it up-to-date within that version; that should allow you to redownload and reïnstall Mavericks, if  desired. If Mavericks is reïnstalled, run Software Update again to get it up to date.
If you no longer have the two grey installation DVDs, you can purchase a replacement set from either Apple or iFixit.

  • I am having start up issues after installing lion

after installing lion on my mac mini it is having major start up issues, sometimes it will not start up at all. Is anyone having the same issues?

After I used MIgration Assistant on my new Mac Mini, Lion would have kernel panics shortly after startup every time. I am pretty sure it was some virus software or network filterting software that ran background tasks that was causing the problem.
Can you startup in single user mode or safe mode?

  • H61M-P20 G3 motherboard 99 code shown right-below, non start

    Hi, I bought yesterday a MSI H61M-P20 G3 mainboard, with Kingston KHX1600C9D3B1/4G - Memory and i3 Intel BX80637I33220 - Core I3-3220 processor. PS2 Keyboard and Mouse.
I have installed Window 7 32 bits, and sometimes when I turn it ON or restarting it, system doesn't starts it shows a black screen with a 99 code below at right side of the screen.
Its very strange because it doesn't happens always, also I have tried with the attached elements (keyboard and mouse). I don't know if it has relation or not with this 99 code, but when I disconnect the PS2 keyboard I have restarted and turned OFF many times and 99 code doesn't appears and system starts correctly, I will try today with an USB keyboard.
Could be the keyboard the reason of this 99 code with system non starting issue?
I wanna be sure if the mainboard have a failure to return it as a defectous part.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Why Won't My I Mac G5 Start Up?

I'm having an intermittent problem starting my I Mac G5. I press the start up button and no go. I try and try, unplug the cable, purchased a new cable, done everything I can think of and nothing works. Then suddenly it will start. I thought it might be the cable because once when I jiggled it the computer started up. I decided that I'll take it to the shop when it won't start anymore at all because I fear that if I take it in when it's intermittent they might not find the problem.
Does anyone know what other reasons could cause this sort of start up issue?
The machine in question is several years old and it's a G5 I Mac, 1.6 GHz PowerPC G5, not the Model listed below which is a newer machine and thankfully starts up just fine.

For me, it turned out to be a bad power supply. $60+ plus $38 labor at the local Apple store. If it's the switch, good for you. My Mac was running forever. I shut it down and moved it to another room in the house. When I went to start it, it wouldn't respond to my button press. Took to to the Apple store and had a Genius look at it. He tried resetting something by holding down the power button for a long while. That didn't work. Ended up leaving it for a power supply replacement. I wasn't going to pay for more than that...
