Weird messages when I repair permissions...

I've repaired permissions using a number of utilities including Onyx, Cocktail and DiskWarrior (runtime). All of them take about two hours to repair permissions and then I get a string of messages saying "ACS found, but was not expecting System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Public"
Or, "ACS found, but was not expecting System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Pictures"
Or, "ACS found, but was not expecting System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Music"
Or, "ACS found, but was not expecting System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Movies"
Or, "ACS found, but was not expecting System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Library/Voices"
Or, "ACS found, but was not expecting System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Library/Sounds"
Does anyone have any clue what these mean? They don't seem to be permission files per se, and the program does finish repairing permissions, but I fear that they are affecting the stability of my machine.
Any help is appreciated

Michael,
Same delay each time....
Permissions repair on my system takes about 30 minutes.
Do you have a problem with your system?
I have used:
Cocktail
Onyx
And Booted into the original Leopard disk and used Disk Utility
If not, your post leads me to believe that you are over-maintaining, and over concerned.

  • How come I always get the same results when I repair permissions?

When I repair permissions I get the following messages, even if I do it again immediately afterwards:
    +Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x .+
    +Repaired "usr/share/derby".+
+Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.+

The message about the ARDAgent is the result of an Apple update to Apple Remote Desktop from awhile ago. If you ran the update, you will get the notice. The "derby" message says that instead of a folder in the /usr/share directory there is now a symbolic link. Since derby is a java gizmo for the Apache web server, and there is a new Java update from Apple (which I haven't run yet, as it requires a restart), it is quite possible that the update makes that change. As Barney noted, Apple has not been good at making changes in the permissions database when they send out updates. The result is that we begin to see these little notes. Initially the database was in complete accord with what the installation had, and there were no warnings at all in Snow Leopard. After the ARD update the SUID warning began, and it is likely the Java update just added another one.
However, the tendency of people to just automatically ignore all warnings all the time, a legacy of the horrible performance of Apple in updating the database in Leopard (where one would get dozens of these things), is I think unfortunate. There can be real errors, some of which could indicate something bad, such as a compromised computer. One really needs to stop and think about which files are showing a warning, and what the warning means, and whether it is the case that all Snow Leopard installations that are fully updated are showing the particular warnings in question.

  • HT2963 When I repair permissions, get one reading that can't be repaired.  "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired."  What does this mean?

When I repair permissions in disk untilities, I get one result that cannot be repaired:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I recently had a new hard drive installed by Apple, after mine failed.  The permissions seem to get out of whack quite often, and I get the message above.
Can you please tell me what may be going on?

  • Slightly worring warning when I repair permissions in disk utility.

    Hi there.
Apologies if this appears like I'm posting in multiple sections. I've already put this in the MacBook forum, then realised it might be more relavent here.
    When I repair permissions, I'm getting the following error message;
*Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.*
Is this something I should be concerned about? I'm not noticing any funny behaviour, but I'd be happier if I wasn't getting this warning.

I believe this is a standard benign error. Search around a little, probably using the this year or last year option in the search page. You'll probably find a link to the KB article that says specifically that this is ok.

  • Weird messages when syncing

Hi, I got my ipod last christmas and this is the first time I've experienced a problem with it. Whenever I try and sync my ipod, a few songs will sync and then it will stop, and a message saying "The iPod "My iPod" canot be synced. The required disc cannot be found". I've updated the newest version, and when I try and restore it, another weird message comes up saying something like "an unknown error occurred" I've read through the user manuals and I've tried a few different things but nothing seems to work. Can anyone help?

  • Weird message when updating my ipod.

I'm getting the following message when I try to update my ipod.
"The ipod "xxxxxxx" cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found.
I did uninstalled and reinstalled itunes. I installed the ipod updater. I restored my ipod and I'm still getting the same message.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

    well done sp1nnaker!
(toonz taught me that trick. yay toonz!)
the photo cache is created automatically. usually it's no problem at all, except on the rare occasions when it gets damaged. then you can get this error, or occasionally this one:
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod
so unless you run into a corruption issue again, you shouldn't be caused much grief by it.

  • Getting a weird message when updating apps

I am getting the following message when I am try to update my wife's iPhone 4 (ATT) apps from the phone itself:
"This discounter price is only available to customers who own a previous version of this item. T purchase this item at full price, click Buy."
    Any ideas?

You'll get that message if you have a different iTunes account synced to your phone from the one used to originally purchase these apps. On your phone: Settings>Store...what Apple ID is shown? Now, go to your iTunes library, right-click on one of the apps involved, what account does it show was used to originally obtain that app? Do the accounts match?

  • Error "ACL found but not expected on..." when doing repair permissions.

I am getting an error on Disk Utility, Repair permissions.   I was having some problems with permissions and sought and received help through forum regarding changing my userid password through Lion Repair (Control R, etc.)  After finishing that ordeal, rebooting, etc.   everything seems fine and works well, perhaps slightly slow.   I decided to go into Disk Utility again and I repeatedly get the following errors...
"ACL found but not expected on “usr/sbin/system_profiler”
    Repaired “usr/sbin/system_profiler”
ACL found but not expected on “usr/sbin/systemsetup”
    Repaired “usr/sbin/systemsetup”
ACL found but not expected on “usr/sbin/traceroute”
    Repaired “usr/sbin/traceroute”
After about a 20-25 minute repair process, I clear the report ,exit disk utility, reboot the computer and I still get the same report.  Disk verify shows the hard drive to be functioning well.   What is the source of these errors and is there a solution.
    Thanks,

    I had those too.
I used ACLr8 just now. Didn't know if it would work for Lion or not. Ran Disk Utility again and it didn't show any problems at all... after having several of the ACL's... which bugged me, even though they are not supposed to mean anything. :-)

  • Why don't I see the log when I repair permissions with Disk Utility

I'm having issues with Safari hanging or bogging down to a snail's pace lately. I have tried several times to repair permissions with Disk Utility. It runs for several minutes, but shows nothing in the log even though the box is checked to show details. I've never seen this before. I don't know if Disk Utility is doing it's job or not....
    Any thoughts?

If the progress bar goes to the end, then you don't have any permissions needing repair. The fact that Safari is slowing down has nothing really to do with permissions.

  • Weird message in Disk Repair - talks about 2 disks & I only have 1

    Hi All-
When verifying my disk and permissions I kept getting errors that it couldn't be done and I needed to repair my disk. I finally broke down and slapped in the Mac OS X install disk (panther) and restarted, went into Disk Utility and tried to repair the disk.
When complete, I got a message like this:
    Volume "Scrumptious" was repaired
    Repair Attempted on 2 Volumes
    1 HFS volume was repaired
1 disk could not be repaired
Scrumptious is my Hard Drive's name, btw. So the odd thing is that I only have one disk. Of course the CDRom was in there, too, so I suppose it could have been referring to this, but that seems odd. I'd think Apple smart enough to make a CDRom that would know it was a CDRom and not try to fix itself.
Anyone want to offer any interpretations for me? Clearly the hard drive was not repaired since the permission repair still doesn't work, so is my only resort to fly to the nearest Apple Store and sign up at the Genius Bar?
    With gratitude,
    Matthew

Since you've installed Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), according to your profile, you should use the Tiger install disk to attempt a repair on your drive.

  • Freezing at startup - weird message when starting up in verbose mode

My macbook pro, only about 2 months old, freezes a lot while its starting up. i have to keep turning it off and on for it to work. It gets stuck at the grey screen with the apple and the loading icon.
I decided to start up in verbose mode and maybe i can see what the problem is. So i did just that and i got this error message:
SATA WARNING: completing a zero block transfer.
it keeps repeating that message and scrolling down the screen forever.
I have no idea what that could be.

Most likely a problem with the disk and/or some corruption of the directory. Be sure to back up your own data if you haven't done so already. Then boot from your install disk and go to the menu bar and select Disk Utility and then Repair Disk. If it reports a problem and fixes it, run it again until everything comes up clean. If it reports a problem it can't fix you could invest in DiskWarrior, or, if you have AppleCare I believe you got a free copy of TechTool, you could try running that.

  • Getting this weird message when connecting to itunes w/my 5th G Ipod Video

Hi was wondering if anyone has encountered this. I just purchased this ned 5G Ipod video connected to my itunes 7.0.1 and worked fine. While I am downloading video podcasts I got this error saying that Itunes has detected and ipod in recovery mode and that I have to restore before I can use Itunes. I did and it reset and I still get the same error message. I tried the 5RS and they do not seem to work either. Any ideas?

Already did at least 5 times.I also folowed the video link you sent me (thank you) and noticed that instructions are different for windows OS!! For windows I am actually instructed to keep the ipod connected until it shows up on itunes. This is when I get the same error I got prior to restoring (ipod in recovery mode). When I press ok it says do not disconnect on the Ipod display.
BTW I cannot see my ipod in my computer either.
