Weird naming inconsistency with imported library

I have managed my mp3's on the PC with iTunes for years and migrated them to my MBP. I never had iTunes manage the files as I also have other PC tools to play the files, so folder and naming stucture were important.
Can anyone explain what 'rule' is used by iTunes to name the file/folder structure and where it gets the info from?
I noticed inconsistencies:
- artist name chosen for folder is not the same as in the IDtag but also not random
- sometimes files are named according to track and sometimes the file isn't renamed at all (but track info is available in IDtag).
I would like to understand the rules that are used by iTunes in naming and storing/finding info.
Can anyone please help?

Here are two excellent resources for anyone who wants to use both Aperture and iPhoto or migrate from iPhoto to Aperture:
Apple Video:

Interview with Aperture product manager Joe Schorr:

I highly recommend both - you will learn a lot from each.
In fact, the O'Reilly website has many good articles and podcasts:
http://digitalmedia.oreilly.com/aperture/
*+Does Aperture bring over the original and modified files, or only one or the other?+*
from what i recall it brings in everything originals and edited versions, but keyword tags them as iPhoto Original and Edited or similar ...
*+Also, Aperture doesn't update things in iPhoto correct, so if you move to Aperture you should basically delete your iPhoto library?*+
correct, but with previews you can browse your aperture library in iPhoto if necessary ...
*+One other annoyance, it seems weird the way it lists your iPhoto library separately in Aperture. Then as I commit to Aperture my new imports won't be in the iPhoto tab?+*
not sure, when i first imported mine into aperture it create a separate project for each "roll" from iPhoto - each roll was an separate import session it seemed ...
i had to manually move stuff around after i finally found the way i wanted to organize my library ...
here is another great resource for aperture related articles:

  • Help with importing library and how to authorize music to play

    Recently I had to reformat my hard drive. As a result I am trying to transfer my itunes library back to the computer from the backup device. There doesn't seem to be a simple way to do this. I found an article online that suggested I could import the full library in one shot by putting it on the desktop and selecting it. This didn't work. So,
    1. what is the fastest and most efficient way to tranfer back my songs
    2. I find that some of the songs I have transferred already are "protected." So, I am getting a prompt to authorize the computer so the music will play. I have already authorized this computer again so when I do go through the motions w/the pop up box it tells me I have already done this. However, it will still not play the songs. So, how do I make it stop that mess and play my songs? I really don't think I should have to repurchase them.
    Thanks

  • IPad music library inconsistent with iTunes Library

    I recently sync my iPad mini 3 with my iTunes library, I noticed the music is not consistent with my iTunes library
    I checked by Artist, and for example, when I checked Aerosmith, in my ipad the "Pump" album is not displaying under artist, is showing as unknown artist, and in my itunes library is correct.
    the ipad mini 3 has 128 GB so it has enough storage for all my music and the setup is to sync the entire library, I only have 50+ GB of music
    Anybody experiencing the same issue?

    I had a similar issue. Not sure about what caused the problem, but I think it was something related to folder localizations. When I upgraded to iTunes 9, I changed OS X language from English to my native. Then I noticed almost half of my library was filled with broken links . I checked out iTunes Library.xml file and found that some of the folder names were in English in that file and the real location was my native language localized folder. I'm not sure had NTFS-3g something to do with that bug (my library was on NTFS-3g partition). I got rid off it recently because it caused more problems than solved them.

  • Inconsistency with import workflow

    Hello gentlemen and ladies, as well as Apple Community friends,
    For past consecutive, straight days of trying to import AVCHD (.mts native files) from Canon VIXIA HF S21 HD CMOS camcorder, believe me, I have try all possible solution to import through connected camcorder to Final Cut Pro X.
    As of last night, what I had discovered is stubborn spinning of waiting and waiting to import, nothing happens. It seems that it see Canon directory files, but nothing to import for minutes, hours. What's holding it back?
    I have imported native directories from Canon camcorder within Mac Finder exactly what is stored on camcorder built-in flash card, and two flash cards. It kinda of can see the card reader or files on hard drive, but it still spins, and spins. What the heck is going on?
    As of last night, I am amazed to discover that consumer-version, iMovie, can read and import no problem. I don't understand why pro app such as Final Cut Pro X cannot, while iMovie can.
    It seems to me that I can import iMovie files into Final Cut Pro X. But the problem I have is duplication of files, and file explodes like crazy. And double time of waiting to import into iMovie, and then into Final Cut Pro X. It seems that iMovie convert mts file as QuickTime movie format (AIC). Not Apple ProRes.
    As some of you know, I have no problem importing AVCHD files in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5. Why can't do the same with Final Cut Pro X? I just don't understand.
    I really like Final Cut Pro X. But I don't see any truly seamless 'workflow'. I see no piece of an evidence of such smooth straight import files into Final Cut Pro X the way I want it to be - into Apple ProRes format.
    My hands are up in the air and a little frustrated. I have posted for some help in the past few days. Some people has claimed that they have same kind of camcorder as I have and experienced no problem. I am trying to understand how? I just don't get it?
    What a shame that Apple do not put suffice information in Final Cut Pro X Help.
    I might go to Apple store here in greater Toronto area near my residence as there are a couple of Apple stores around near my residence. But I would prefer to resolve this through Apple Community discussion... as Apple store is always packed with tons of people browsing all over the place. Not only that, but communication challenge due to the fact I am Deaf.
    Please give me a crystal clear steps for me to reproduce. Please be sure that you have the same camcorder as I have. Canon VIXIA HF S21, that is.
    Thank you for all you help. Any help and assistance would be deeply appreciated.
    Have an amazing, most beautiful day (it is gorgeous and pleasant) summer day here in Canada!
    TIA, Brian

    Hello Tom,
    Just wanted to follow up and thought that I'd want to report back. I am glad to find a reasonable solution to deal with this stubborn, annoying import workflow problem. I am glad that I went to Apple retail store earlier today. Actually, the first guy at the Genius Bar at the store admitted that it was beyond his expert, but he has managed to get someone somewhere in the store on staff who happened to know a lot about Final Cut Pro X. Again, he also admitted that Final Cut Pro X issues are new to them.
    They witnessed that my issue not able to get this camcorder not playing nicely with Final Cut Pro X. And it seems that Final Cut Pro X can see the SDHD cards inside camcorder. We believe that Final Cut Pro X app do not see or understand anything inside that built-in memory card inside the camcorder, which is a 64-GB flash memory fixed inside the camcorder.
    I realize that most of my footages remain inside that built-in flash memory, and plan to transfer these clips from built-in memory into two SDHD flash cards. From now on, I would think I want to shoot clips and have it recorded straight to those two SDHD extreme pro.
    What we have found that Final Cut Pro X finally imports media files from SDHD card. Although, I didn't bring my express card reader with me - forgot to bring it with me to Apple store earlier.
    Therefore, I recommend that it is wise to connect camcorder to computer, then turn camcorder on. Once the cards shown on Desktop. Then open Final Cut Pro X. If connected camcorder to computer using USB connection, I don't highly recommend it - it is a pain and slow process. If you have quite few footages, go for it. But if you have large and/or many footages, go for express card reader or use FireWire connection if camcorder has this feature. Otherwise use express card reader, the better. Fastest one, the best.
    And, I decided to sign up for One-to-One programme offered through Apple retail store so that I get both of my hands dirty under the hood of Final Cut Pro X along with Motion and Compressor. It would be easier for me, especially myself being Deaf, having difficulties in securing sign language interpreters for such workshop or training. It is hard to get talented interpreter to do technical interpreting especially with video editing or photo editing. So I decide to go for one-to-one, in-person basis with trainer from Apple retail store. Best of all, it is good for a year. Not bad for the good price, I guess.
    Well, I am glad that I got this stubborn annoying issue resolved. So I can move this forward. I would expect that I probably will have some questions from time to time if needed to.
    I told Apple team at Apple store earlier that Final Cut Pro X help material is really lousy and not well thought details. Lot of info left out. They told me it is still new and assured me that Apple corporate level will get this resolved. I hope so, sooner the better.
    Enuf blah for now.
    BTW, I am able to import footages (mts/avchd files) into Final Cut Pro X with no problem from card reader using express card reader... BAM, here it goes. Fast! I see that, by opening Quicktime info on one of those optimized file done by Final Cut Pro X, I like what I see... H.264 codec. And this is 1080i HD this time. I didn't see that before. Today is my first time seeing 1080i.
    I have quick question.. what is difference between 1080i and 1080p? What is good thing about 1080i? The trainer guy at Apple store said it is really high quality - 1080i. Is this true? I want to hear both side of perspective, the better informed for myself and others who have similar question as I do.
    Well, better stop for now...
    Tom... and few others, thank you for your patience, and lots of efforts helping me out for past few days. I look forward to contribute myself to the Final Cut Pro X community. But first, I gotta to get both of my hands dirty under the hood of Final Cut Pro X... Play with it... Rough it up and see what it can do.
    Thanks for all that you guys do!
    Bonne nuit!

  • How do I sync my imported CDs with iTunes Library to get them everywhere like purchased items?

    Good day!
    I've got iPhone 4S. And I have some licensed CDs which I've imported to my PC's iTunes Library. I've synced my iPhone with that library. But I want to get these CDs on every computer where iTunes installed. So I want to have one global Library that contains both my purchased through iTunes music and my CDs. I do not want to pay twice for one album. Is it possible?

    The content is only where the user puts it.
    If you desire to have the content on multiple computers, put it there.  Use a flash drive, external hard drive, or copy the files over the network.

  • After upgrading to Maverick mailboxes have disappeared. Even after checking library, rebuild etc. they are gone. With important data. Is there any hope?

    Maverick - lost all my mailboxes (Apple Mail) with important datat. Followed advice on help menu to reindex, rebuild; called Apple Chat. No help.
    Losing important data is a HUGE problem.
    Also, Maverick no longer has the many folders I once had in my Home scree. These folders included other important information
    carefully arranged. Are the files somewhere else? In what order? What a mess!

    I woke up this morning with the same problem (all was fine last night).  Only way to get all my mailbox folders back was to use Time Machine while in Mail, choosing the backup file from previous night and selecting EACH MAILBOX to restore (23 for me).  All appears okay so far today (except some of my accessories in the menu bar are gone).
    I sure hope an update comes SOON.  In anticipation of Mavericks and the new MAIL I switched from Outlook 2011 3 weeks ago transfering 17,000+ files and would hate to back

  • Import Library Error two functions with same name on different namespaces

    Im trying impor a library developed by me. In this library have two functions ShowMenu. First function be inside into a class and its declared as
    void __fastcall TTrayicon:howMenu(). The second function has declared as extern "C" __declspec(dllexport) ShowMenu(int x, int y).
    When i use de assistant to import this library i select the library and its header file. But in the next step the assistant show to me the first function.
    Anyone explain what's happen?

    I'm not sure what kind of answer you're looking for. LabVIEW's Import Library wizard does not always properly handle accessing functions in standard C++ DLLs. See this for more info.

  • Using iphoto with iphoto library on external hard drive

    My Imac is running snow leopard with ilife '11. I have imported way too many photos into Iphoto which is really slowing it down. I'd like to put all of my photos on an external hard drive and use that as my iphoto library--which should be possible, as I gather from reading various other related posts. Another reason to put it on an external drive is so that I can use my new macbook air to edit/organize while on the go.
    1. How do I set up my Iphoto library on an external hard drive?
    2. How do I make sure that all future photos go to the library on that external hard drive?
    3. How do I run Iphoto with the library on an external hard drive?
    THANK YOU for your help!

    Hello. I just transferred my iPhoto library to a Western Digital My Book for Mac external hard drive. Do you know if I needed to format this drive even though it says it's for Mac. I did not format it and there were not any instructions with the drive that said I needed to do it. The transfer seems to have worked ok but my backups from Time Machine onto Time Capsule are inconsistent. I already posed a question regarding this problem but I noticed this message regarding formating the external disk and I wonder if that is causing the problem. Thanks.

  • Using JavaCompiler together with a Library

    Currently I am developing a tool in which Java Source Files are created based on a XSD file with help of a tool named Castor.
    After the generation of the files the files need to be compiled in order to be used by the program. This used to be done with a Library named XMLBean, however I do not wish to use this library anymore.
    As a alternative I ended up using the Java compiler that comes with the JDK in the tools.jar file. This resulted in a problem, which made me search for a other solution. This way I ended up working with the javax.tools.JavaCompiler. However compilation still failed due to the same problem.
    So what is this problem?
    Initially I tested my code generation logic and compile logic in a normal application. The Java code got generated fine using castor, the compilation using both methods I described also went fine.
    The problem occurs when I attempt to use the same logic in a web application I am developing to run on Tomcat. The Code generation goes fine (since the castor library is included in the project) however the compilation goes wrong and results in the following error:
    "package org.exolab.castor.xml does not exist"
    In other words, the compiler does not understand one of the imports of the source file (refering to a namespace in Castor, a library that was used to generate the file, and is included in the web project).
    Does anyone know why compilation fails in a web application but goes well in a normal application? Does anyone know how this problem can be solved, or does anyone know better component for compilation?
    Thanks a lot.
    This is the code I currently use for compilation:
    public void compileJavaSource(String[] sourceFilePaths)
              System.out.println("Begin Compiling of Source Files");
              JavaCompiler compiler = ToolProvider.getSystemJavaCompiler(); // Line 1.
              DiagnosticCollector<JavaFileObject> diagnosticsCollector = new DiagnosticCollector<JavaFileObject>();
              StandardJavaFileManager fileManager  = compiler.getStandardFileManager(diagnosticsCollector, null, null); // Line 3.
              Iterable<? extends JavaFileObject> fileObjects = fileManager.getJavaFileObjectsFromStrings(Arrays.asList(sourceFilePaths)); // Line 5
              CompilationTask task = compiler.getTask(null, fileManager, diagnosticsCollector, null, null, fileObjects); // Line 6
              Boolean result = task.call(); // Line 7
              List<Diagnostic<? extends JavaFileObject>> diagnostics = diagnosticsCollector.getDiagnostics();
              for(int i=0; i < diagnostics.size(); i++){
                   Diagnostic<? extends JavaFileObject> d = diagnostics.get(i);
                   System.out.println(d.getMessage(null));
              if(result == true) {
                   System.out.println("Compilation has succeeded");
              else {
                   System.out.println("Compilation fails.");
              System.out.println("Done Compiling of Source Files");
         } Initially I used this:
    com.sun.tools.javac.Main.compile(sourceFilePaths);

    Cross posted. (Sorry about that)
    To avoid people spending time looking for an answer, here is the solution I found myself:
    First off all, for ANT to work, 2 libraries have to be imported in the web project.
    The libraries are: ant.jar and ant-launcher.jar
    Next to that, the library's Xerces (xercesImpl.jar) and xml-apis.jar (also included in ANT). There Library's are also needed to get Castor to work.
    To compile the code of my generated Java Classes I use the following ANT Build file code:
    <project default="build" basedir=".">
         <path id="classpath">
            <fileset dir="WEB-INF/lib" includes="**/*.jar"/>
        </path>
         <target name="build">
            <javac srcdir="src" destdir="WEB-INF/classes" debug="true" includes="**/*.java" classpathref="classpath"/>
         </target>
    </project>The file basically reads every .java file from my "src" folder. Which is the folder I choose to put my generated class files, and compiles them to the WEB-INF/classes folder. This is the folder were Tomcat stores all its classes.
    What went wrong with the compilation I attempted in the opening post, is that javac could not find the Castor Library, even after I added it in my classpath environment variable. Fortunately, with ANT I can define a classpath for the application, which is the WEB-INF/lib folder. This is the folder where Tomcat stores its Library's. Hence, javac can find the Castor Library from then on.
    Finally I call the ant task using the following Java Code:
    public void compileJavaSource(String buildFilePath)
              System.out.println("Start Compilation");
              File buildFile = new File(buildFilePath);
              Project p = new Project();
              p.setUserProperty("ant.file", buildFilePath);
              p.init();
              ProjectHelper helper = ProjectHelper.getProjectHelper();
              p.addReference("ant.projectHelper", helper);
              helper.parse(p, buildFile);
              p.executeTarget(p.getDefaultTarget());
              System.out.println("Compilation Finished");
         }This took care of the problem pretty nicely.

  • IPhone & iPad sync with new library

    Okay, so I just received a brand new MacBook Pro. Sweet. I hooked my phone up to sync it. I got a message saying your phone is synced with another library, can't be synced with more than one library, etc. So I emailed iTunes, explained my situation, they said you can manually sync it from the iphone page in iTunes. I clicked the little check box, but the same message come up. I emailed them back, they said it was weird, and try apple discussions. So here is the problem. I have all my music on my new MacBook Pro, but my apps never transferred over from my old computer to my new one. If I delete all the content on my iPhone, then I lose all my apps. Same thing goes for my iPad. What can I do?

    You don't have to move everything from the old computer, just the files inside the iTunes folder (iTunes Library or iTunes Music Library and the .xml version, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Music, Mobile Applications, ipod Games, etc...)
    If you didn't use Migration Assistant to move your data from the old computer to the new one, you may have to right click on each of the files and folder and choose "Get Info" and change the permissions to "Everyone" can "Read and Write" before you copy them to the new computer.
    If 100% of your music and movie files and apps are already on the iPod, and you can't copy everything from the old Mac to new one, then you could try this:
    (1) In the new Mac make sure you are logged into the iTunes store and the computer is "Authorized" under the menu "Store > Authorize This Computer"
    (2) Use "File > Transfer Purchases from iPod" to get you purchased content,
    (3) You may need to find a free app online called "Senuti" to transfer non-purchased music like rips from CD's, but I don't know if this will import non-purchased movies. (Senuti is iTunes spelled backwards)
    (4) Then use "File > Library > Import Playlists and only import just the old "iTunes Library.xml file from the old computer into the new one. (if you want all your old playlists)
    In my case I would need a 900Gb - 1Tb iPod to fit my entire library on one device, but it sounds like your library was small.

  • PC died and in turn my main iTunes library. iPhone was synced to it. Now when I try to connect to another library it tells me the phone must be wiped clean before I can manage music with new library. Any way around that? Don't want to lose music.

    My PC died and in turn so did my main iTunes library.  My iPhone was synced to the library that is gone.  Now when I try to connect to another library, it tells me the phone must be wiped clean before I can manage music with new library.  Any way around that?  I don't want to lose the music that is on my phone.  I am looking for a way to tell the phone to "forget" the old library and let me start working with a new library.

    It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
    Use your backup copy of your computer to put everything on the new one.
    It sounds like you have failed to do this, which is not good at all.
    You will have to transfer your itunes purchases from your iphone.  Authorize your computer for your itunes account
    About iTunes Store authorization and deauthorization
    Open itunes, plug in iphone, do NOT sync, click File>Transfer Purchases
    When you do sync you will lose your pics ( photo library - synced from your old computer), your itunes content ( music, apps, videos,etc) , your contacts and your calendars.  So do NOT sync yet.  This is why a backup copy is so important.
    Enter one unique contact and calendar entry on your computer.
    When you first sync, you should get the option to merger the data.  Choose it.
    If you want your pics, then you will need to e-mail them to yourself before you sync.  They will not be of the original quality as they are reduced when synced to iphone.
    When all is as goos as it can be, then backup your computer, and always maintain the backup.

    It makes sense not to import non-packaged class.
    My other problem is with JDBC ODBC.I have a Dell system with Windows XP.

  • Imported Library - NoClassDefFoundError

    Imported Library - NoClassDefFoundError
    Hi
    I created a shared library and imported it in my application using orion-application.xml
    <imported-shared-libraries>
    <import-shared-library name="amc.common" max-version="1.0"></import-shared-library>
    </imported-shared-libraries>
    When I run the application I get NoClassDefFoundError when accessing a class in the Shared library.
    I Know the Jar is Ok as the application works fine when I build the .jar into WEB-INF/lib
    When I check ClassLoader using system Mbean, I can see that the shared library is imported by my Web Application. So why it is failing to find the class ?
    What else need to be done in the application to load the classes that are in the shared library ?
    Aimey

    Hi,
    there is nothing specific that needs to be done on an application side. However, my best advise is to ask this question on the OC4J forum as I am not an expert in share libraries and known issues with it

  • Aperture with referenced library on a terastation

    I was experiencing a problem similar (or identical) to the one discussed in this post (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6695612&tstart=0) and made some head-way on debugging it. Since I have a few more data points, I'm creating a thread with a more specific description of the problem.
    To quickly review: I was attempting to import photos from a camera or card reader and place the photos onto a volume hosted by a terastation. I would select 1 or more photos for import, push the button, and Aperture would quickly respond "0 Images have been imported" with no error/failure message.
    - In the aforementioned configuration, I had the Library "package" on my local drive and was simply trying to save the pictures to the terastation.
    - I started over (whacked the pictures folder, whacked the prefs.plist, whacked the library) and created a new library package on the local drive.
    - When I selected a local drive as the destination for the pictures (though not IN the library itself) the import worked ok.
    - Tried moving the library package over to the terastation and it said something to the effect of "could not copy all files because one or more files uses an unsupported character in the filename".
    - I could move the folder containing the pictures to the terastation after import.
    - If I create a library package on the terastation, it does not complain.
    - So, with the library on the TS, I tried importing again with the destination for the pictures being a local drive.
    - This time I got an error message saying "Import From Capture Card Completed with Errors" and it listed the files that failed (though it did not elaborate on the error).
    So if either the library AND/OR the destination for the pictures is the terastation, the import will fail. Though I see no "good" reason for a failure in the case where the library is local and the pictures are on the TS.
    Is there a way to enable logging so I can get a better idea for the failure mechanism?
    Any known solutions/work-arounds to this problem?

    Most of the description was a list of trouble-shooting steps I've gone through. The fundamental thing that I'm trying to do is keep the library on my local computer and the pictures on the terastation.
    In the import dialog, I set "Store Files" to a path on the TS, copy and move are grayed (but copy is selected), subfolders is set to "Image year/month/day", I click "Import <n> Images" and it says "0 images have been imported"
    None of the picture filenames are unusual. I'm not sure why its failing because none of the errors are verbose
    FWIW, I believe the terastation uses XFS as the underlying format.
