Weird Noises from Macbook Pro

Some Weird noises from my MacBook Pro mid to late 2014

Maybe you could describe what kind of "weird" noises you are hearing? Everybody's perception of weird is not the same, and something that you may think is weird may have a logical explanation. But we can't even begin to diagnose it without a little more to go on....

  • Weird sound from MacBook Pro 2011

I have a weird sound that occasionally occurs from my Late 2011 13" MacBook Pro. The sound comes from the left side of the base, towards the hinge. The timing is random, usually when sitting by itself idle with the lid open. It has occured when the charging cable is both connected and disconnected. Performing a restart does not cause it to stop, it will continue thru the restart. Shutting down completely does shut it up, but it'll likely appear shortly after booting up. Closing the lid of the MBP will shut up the sound, and if left closed for a couple hours, the sound doesn't appear for awhile.
The sound itself is pretty loud, and can easily drown out my TV when it kicks in. I don't think it's the fan, as I've heard the fan on full tilt and it's still quiet, unlike this noise I am referring to. Plus, the fan is located in the center against the hinge, not on the left where the noise is coming from. I tried resetting the SMC and NVRAM, no luck. I did record the sound with my cell phone, here is a video of it:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgutF9bZilI
If anyone has an idea of what is causing this sound, please help. Thank you.

Does the sound, or it's basis, interfere with operation of the MBP in any way?  When the lid is closed it is in sleep mode so one would expect the sound to stop then.
Best thing might be a visit to the Apple store genius bar to have the techs test it.

  • Noise from MacBook Pro Retina 13 late 2013

    Hi,
I wonder if noise from my MacBook Pro Retina 13 late 2013 is normal. I can hear it only in quiet room (first time I heard it in the middle of the night).  It’s very quiet noise. I don't know what to compare this noise. For me it’s sounds like clicking the spring. I can hear it when scrolling the webpage by trackpad, start mission control by gesture (or F3 key), changing the full screen apps by gesture or when minimize Safari or other apps. I think it depends on the graphic system work. It’s a little lauder when I use 1680x1050 scaled resolution than use 'best for display' resolution. I think the noise occurs when graphic system do some operation. Is it possible?
Today I was in Authorized Service Provider but technician heard nothing. There I can't hear this noise too, because this noise is very quiet and there is not total silence. Diagnostic tools show that everything is ok. But I still hear it in total quiet room. I tried to record this noise by iPhone but it can't do that.
Can you do me a favor and check this on your MacBook? Sit in totally quiet room, please. Set the scaled resolution 1680x1050 then bring ear closer to the keyboard and scroll a webpage (which have a lot of graphics) by gesture on the trackpad, start mission control or open notification center. Can you hear then any noise? Please listen carefully, because this is very quiet noise.
I’ll be very gratefully for your help. I wonder if only my MacBook making this noises or all MacBook Retina late 2013 making this.
    Regards,
    Mateusz

    Hi Mateusz,
I have the same issue on my new MBP retina 13 late 2013. It's not disturbing because I can hear it in only very quiet room and only if the content of the screen is changing (like scrolling web pages). It reminds me the sound of old 3'5'' hard discs. I first thought it's a hdd, but then realised my mac has only SSD.
I think it's a noise from the voltage regulators. This is normal for very high speed high-voltage signals.
But any way, MBP 13 late 2013 is the best laptop I ever saw
It's just silent and cool like an ipad. I wonder if it has a rotating cooler at all.
    Jon Bo
Thank you Jon Bo for your response. I agree with you. This noise is something like electronic noise, and it is related to the graphics card.
The rMBP 13 late 2013 works without any noise other then situations I’ve described above. The noise is so quiet that I can't hear it when e.g. external HDD working in the same room.

  • Odd "Pong" Noise from MacBook Pro

My new MacBook Pro makes a very strange "pong" noise extremely sporadically. The sound seems to be coming from just next to the trackpad on the right-hand side of the machine. By way of description, I would say it sounds like a tennis ball being hit. It's very faint, and not that big of a problem. I'm just curious as to what is causing it and if it can be fixed.
Searching the 'net. I only found one other reference to the sound http://forums.appleinsider.com/archive/index.php/t-69355.html . Anyone have any ideas?

My fix worked. It's funny--there are a lot of complaints about this noise across the net and a lot of people saying the MacBook is the noisiest computer around because of this pong. But I never would have heard the noise on my old Toshiba. It's because the MacBook Pro is nearly silent that I could hear this faint table tennis game going on under the hood.

  • Strange noise from MacBook Pro 15"

Out of nowhere, my MacBook Pro 15" started making a strange sound. It lasted for about 30 seconds and came back a few times (I haven't noticed a clear interval.) If it makes any difference, it's a mid-2009 model, 2.53 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 250 GB Hitachi HDD. Any thoughts on what it could be? It sounds similar to an old-style modem. I shot a short video and posted it to YouTube; hopefully, the sound comes through relatively clearly. I shot this on a phone, so it may not. Please see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HidXN9n5d7c

I have the same issue with macbook pro mid 2009.
It sounds like the old modem connection sound but I have no modem on this machine. A couple of things, I was connected by ethernet and surfing with Safari and the laptop was extremely hot especially around the ethernet port. Also, the sound wasn't coming through the speakers (no difference when muted), it seemed to be coming from under the keyboard.
It started with a sound like a modem trying to connect and then went into a high pitched tone that wouldn't go away until I shut down the computer.
Now this morning the sound has disappeared ( the computer is cool) but it was very strange, anyone have any idea what it could have been?

  • Breathing noises from MacBook Pro

Is it normal that there is sometimes coming noises from the mac? it´s just sometimes and it sounds like a vibrating breathing, it´s in the upper left corner of the mac..:(

Yes, maybe like a wheeze, but also more like someone is snoring very vague. I don´t know if I can explain it better. It´s more gone today, nearly gone. If it´s not the electrisity, maybe it´s only that my battery was empty so my mac had to work harder?? I haven´t heard the sound before and my battery has been empty a many times. Maybe I should take it to the apple store so they can look at it? My apple protection guarantee goes out in september and if there´s something wrong it would be time to take it there now. 2 years ago my whole electrisity cabel burned off the plastic around it and the whole battery got deformed. They had to change the whole battery. It was in the summer and that summer was so hot. Quite a shock to a nearly new mac, it was 1 year old at that time

how to transfer data from macbook pro to an external hard drive, im using (WD 1TB 3.0) ???. I cannot copy anything from my mac to it not a single file.

ok - since you'll be sharing it with a PC - connect it to your windows pc - then format from there - instead of NTFS format - choose exFAT.
or, you can read the link below on how to do it in dos mode.
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/how-can-i-forma t-external-drive-in-exfat-not-in/0f6bf19a-19d6-4470-ae05-53ddf26bb476?msgId=1860 eae3-3488-4eea-8326-f87b89d9851b
once you've formatted it - you can now use it in both your macbook and windows computer.

  • How do i transfer my data from macbook pro to iMac?

i just bought a iMac.  How do i transfer my itunes library, photos, files via bluetooth from macbook pro to my iMac?  Much thanks for your help!

I believe that when you boot your computer for the first time and you are following the onscreen instructions you are prompted whether you want to transfer data from an old mac or PC. If you click 'transfer from an old mac' and follow the onscreen instructions, this may work.
If you have already skipped this step you could use iCloud to transfer data. If you make sure that everything you want to transfer is synced in iCloud, this may also work.

  • Transfer video from macbook pro to iPhone iOS 8

how to transfer video from macbook pro to iphone 5S IOS 8, anyone?

    Hi hjmdsalleh,
You typically use iTunes to sync your content to your iPhone.
iOS: Syncing your data with iTunes
If you are having problems syncing some videos, they may not be in the correct format.
iTunes: Videos may be unable to sync to iPhone, iPad, or iPod
    Take care,

  • How to sync contacts and calendar from macbook pro to ipad 2?

How do I sync contacts and calendar from macbook pro to ipad2?

I have the same problem and have not been able to get contacts transferred from my MacBook Pro to my iPad 2.  I have checked "sync contacts", when it does the sync it says it is syncing contacts, but the address book on the iPad remains empty.  I tried checking the box under "advanced" that says to replace the contacts information on the iPad, sync again, same result—an empty address book on the iPad.  Any suggestions?

  • Syncing bokmarks in safari from MacBook Pro to iPad

How do I sync bookmarks from MacBook Pro to iPad in Safari? Thanks

You can sync bookmarks between your Mac and iPad using iCloud.
Instructions here >  Apple - iCloud - Learn how to set up iCloud on all your devices.
You get 5GB's of storage space for free.
Mac OS X minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion v10.7.5
If you are not sure which OS X is installed, click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
    The version is noted there.
ICloud has other great features aside from just syncing bookmarks ..
Apple - iCloud - Find My iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

  • How to sync photos from MacBook Pro to iPad 3?

How to sync photos from MacBook Pro to iPad 3 without it automatically deleting previously synced photos, or replacing them with new ones?

How can I create albums in the Photos app on the iPad
Photos that were taken with the iPad (or any photos in the camera roll) can be deleted right on the iPad. Tap the trash can icon in the top right corner if you are viewing the pho,to in full screen, or if you are viewing as thumbnails - tap the arrow in the upper right corner - tap the photos that you want to delete and then tap - Delete.
Photos that were synced from your computer using iTunes can only be deleted by de-selecting them from the folder from where they were synced -  and then re-syncing.
