Weird note display in piano roll

All they notes in the piano roll display have suddenly acquired blocks of colour and a keyboard has appeared on the right hand side with enormous keys. The blocks of colour seem far apart, not at all like the notes that were there before this weird thing happened. I've undone a dozen times but it seems this isn't something I can undo. I can find nowhere to change this and I can find no mention of it in Logic HELP. Can somebody set me straight please?

Yes, sereen, you're right on the money. I was zoomed in until I could see the atoms that made up the notes. The display was so bizarre - each note was contained in a green box with a yellowish edge. Having never seen anything like it I panicked. Thanks for your help.

  • Oh no! Note selection in Piano Roll also selects cc data?

Just discovered this in the 10.0.05 update: If you select a note in the Piano Roll edit window Logic will also select any cc data the occurs during that note (or notes). I have never seen this behavior before, and I can find no way to turn it off !!!
Anyone know how to disable this?

    Tried that. No joy...
However, your suggestion does work in 10.0.04. Somehow they made it so that option is always on in 10.0.05.
If this is confirmed it points to the fact that Logic would do well to have a beta test team of actual users instead of just in house testing...  Can anyone confirm this behavior?

  • Fixed note length in piano roll

Hello ,is there any way to draw notes with a fixed length in the piano roll rather than using the last edited note's length?
In other words,i want the default note length not to automatically change every time i draw/edit a new note (with a different length).
Im quite sure this cannot be done, but i thought i should ask to confirm...
I also feel i want to say my opinion on that, you dont have to read it or answer back to it:
I find this way of editing very confusing and counter creative ,it sure adds extra thinking proccess. While you are drawing notes it
constantly keeps your mind away from your melody line since in every step, you have to stop some milliseconds and think
"which side should i drag to resize now given the new facts left or right?"....
And extra (unnecessary) thinking always acts against creativity.
I think it seems very logical the way i said that and that objectively, irrelevant to any personal preferences, this way of editing
,even if i doesnt annoy everyone ,it is indeed counter creative.
Especcially if one really does a lot of editing rather than recording.
I wish there was an option for that in the preferences, maybe something very simple like a checkbox "Automaticaly define default note" to uncheck.
Im sure it would be only a few hours of programming for the developers to do something like that, but it would be such a saver for people
who edit a lot or for people coming from other DAWS, or for anyone that simply cant get used to it because they feel it anti-intuitive / unatural...
There...i shared my thoughts, at least i feel a better know...!
(However if you read my opinion i d like to hear what other people (that do a lot of editing) feel )

You can use the transform tool but it's "after the fact". Simply rubberband a group of notes to be changed and use the Transform tool under the piano roll's "function" menu. Choose "Fixed Note Length" then set the parameter box to the value you need.
There's also this workaround:  Find a note of the correct length already in the sequence or create temporary notes of the correct length. I'm assuming by "draw" you mean using the pencil tool. Move the pencil over the *center of note with the length you need, left mouse click and hold for a second, until the pencil turns into a hand, you will now have the length set for drawing new notes. The pencil tool is still selected so you don't have any additional selections to make.
Yes, it's a hassle, but once you get used to it you will find it's faster than what you've been doing.
*slight correction: when moving the pencil tool over the *center of a note, it will change into the pointer arrow, left click and hold and it will change into the hand, move the pointer away and it goes back to the pencil.

  • Separate midi drum channels not showing in piano roll, only kick

hey ya'll!  I separated my midi drum notes on to separate mudi tracks. But now only the kick track shows up in the piano roll window.
I am using AD and need to be able to edit the drum midi tracks. I use the piano roll window for this. Can someone help me?
    Jon

You can select multiple regions in the arrange window and they will all show up in the piano roll. If you color each drum region a different color and select "region colors" in the piano roll view menu you can easily tell which regions are whoch.

  • How to enable note names in piano roll in Logic Pro X?

    Hello,
I am trying to understand how to enable the note names in the piano roll editor, according to some posts it should works creating a mapped instrument, I follow up each step but for me this solution does not work.
Basically I have created a software instrument with Drum Kit and I would like to see the names of each component of the drum when I am editing(for example snare, kick, toms HH etc), currently I only can see values as C4, C3, C2 etc
I appreciate your help, thanks in advanced.

Well it is a shame because the "Piano Roll" is a good and quickly tool for edit drums and midi software. I have used Cubase, ProTools, Reaper and they have notes names options available, I do not understand why Apple did not think in that option as well.
By the way today I have practiced with "Step Editor" option, it is interesting option but it is not better than edit with "Piano Roll".
I hope that Apple think in this little option but great tool for the next release.
    Thanks Ericksimon.
PD: If anyone have another idea to edit drums quickly with Logic Pro X I appreciate the recommendation.

  • How can I edit note events in Piano Roll?

Hi, I am still using 9.1.8 and in the Piano Roll the rectangles representing note events have a line inside the rectangle and I was hoping to use the event list to get that line to extend the audible length of some long notes.
But changing the length values in the event list seems to lengthen the note not the audible portion which I think is represemted by the line inside the rectangle. Is that true?
Is there a way to get the audible sound to keep playing until the end of the visible note event?

Thanks you both ErikSimon and Pancenter. The velocity can be lengthened ,Erik, by what you describe but to the line in the Piano Roll when adjusted in the event list will only lengthen the note. Sorry, hoor you are right but velocity isn't the problem-sustain length is.
Pancenter hit the nail on the head. The sample libraries are put together appently by developers who have some strange ideas about what orchestral intruments can do in the right hands. I have played Baroque Bassoon here in Europe for 20 years and have sat next to classical flute players who can easily hold a note for the length I need. And it is no problem for them to hit it exactly in tune, but we played in tune=meantone, not everything out of tune=Equal Temperament.
Somehow the false assupmtion that all classically trained musicians are incapale of hittng and sustaining a note in tune at the exact moment needed has becom an accepted belief. This is NOT true, the sound of E.W.Q.L. products is the Romantic 101 mantovani string culture which owes more to hollywood films than to reality.
I now see that all I have to do is replace the whole note with two half notes, the second one muted ,and it should play as I want.
Again thank you both for your brave an wise help.

  • Will Not Display by Film Roll

I can't figure this out: When I am on the "library" selection, I used
to see a display of all the film rolls, listed separately. Now all I get is a scroll of photos with no indication of what film roll they are on.
How do I set the view so I can view the photos grouped by film rolls?

    Hi Bill,
Actually the same thing happened to me under different circumstances.
I was dragging a group of five images to a keyword in the keyword panel.
I dropped them on the keyword and in front of my eyes the library images were shifting. (I have my view set to rolls). When I was done being shocked I discovered all my images were in one roll. This was not acceptable to me as I really like my dated roll organization.
I had recently done a backup so I dragged out the messed up library and dragged my backup into the Pictures folder.
I no longer use that keyword panel for keywords. I use the "get info" pop over window to keyword my images.
I really don't know what your iPhoto Library looks like in the Finder. If you can navigate there and tell me if your images are still in their dated folders, I can tell you what to do from there.
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.
If your images are still in their dated rolls in the Finder, then you can get those rolls back, but will lose Albums, keywords, slideshow...basically everything , but you will get your roll organization back.
You would follow the instructions on Page 2 for the "add to the library" method.

  • Paste notes in Piano Roll changes Region size

    Hi,
When I copy/paste a note in the piano roll, using cmd+C, cmd+V, it also changes the Region size. Which is not convenient at all.
When I do it with alt+mouse, it works perfectly fine. But I work mainly with keyboard commands.
Also, sometimes it even creates a new region on its own.
    I am on LogicPro X 10.0.1, OS X 10.8.4, iMac 2.5 Ghz, 16 Gb RAM.
I saw similar questions already, but no answer yet.
    Thank you by advance

You shouldn't have an issue...doing what you are doing.. and I cannot recreate it here..
But an alternative would be to simply copy the Region itself in the Arrange window....
Hold Down the Option key and drag region using mouse or trackpad....

  • Chaning pitch in piano roll like in Gragaband and Akai MPC

The other day I was fiddling around with Garaband on my buddies new Macbook and I found a cool feature which I thought the MPC was the only that has it.
If you select a MIDI note in the piano roll in GB, you can change the pitch of that note and it tunes the sample it triggers (the mIDI note remains at the original place, however). How do I do this in Logic?? This is an excellent thing if you fi are programming a snare roll or if you trigger different samples in 1 sampler and can't change pitch other than automating the sampler's tuning parameter.
I hope I make sense? This is hard to explain in a foreign language.

sorry, but just wanna cover this...say if im programming a drum beat in the piano roll. i dont like to use mouse or trackpad at all.
i would record a pattern with caps lock on-screen keyboard, i tend to copy and paste certain notes via mouse drag to select and copy and drag to copy too. but i guess i can select multipe notes with modifiers..?...and copy and paste too, by moving the song position line via the transport display figure...right....
(theres no avoiding mouse/trackpad is there?)
then moving and shifting notes is ok...
any other cool shortcuts for building a drum pattern in piano roll editor, for someone who doesnt wanna use mouse or trackpad?

  • Catch video frame in piano roll

I use Logic X to score for TV and Film and a big part of my workflow used to be dragging notes in the piano roll editor to match the picture.
The dragged note used to scroll the video and catch the frame in previous versions, this seems to have disappeared in LPX.
Is there something I haven't checked to enable this?
    Thank you,
    Simon.

(first attempt:) I can't confirm this. Resizing always as expected.
I also noted that even in your video it is inconsistent. @ 0.42 this odd glitch does not happen.
I just tried it again and "success": I deleted my recorded midi notes and pencilled in one instead, and I can now replicate your bug. It only happens if I try to lengthen the note by moving the left side. All resizing the via grabbing the right side, or shortening via the left side  work normally.
my MO: Open a New project, create 1 Software Instrument track (no need to load an actual instrument), pencil in 1 region (two bars long), go to the Piano Roll for that region, open MIDI draw and pencil in some Expression events (MIDI CC 11), then pencil in 1 note and try resizing and moving it.
Another weird bug, this, though luckily it can be worked around easily.
I tried to make this note exactly 3/4 by dragging the left side:
This is the result (it moved with a catterpillarlike motion, like in the vid)

  • White flash, spinning wheel of death, Mountain Lion, MBP retina, simple piano roll edit then crash WHY ?

I have a brand new Macbook pro Retina OSX Mountain Lion pre installed, Logic Pro 9 studio. I'm running in 32 bit mode, Logic is crashing constantly and all I'm doing is copying a note on the piano roll to another beat. That's all it takes to crash. I will add to this post other functions that cause the crash as time goes on trying to work on a song. Anyone else experiencing this behavior ?

Did some research on the forums, I tried running  Logic 9 in 64bit mode and so far that seems to do the trick. I should mention that I was using 1 instance of BFD drums and quite a few waves plugins. I think the BFD was hogging the memory perhaps.

  • Why do the piano roll and event editor act differently?

In Logic Studio 9, this wasn't the case, but there are numerous examples now where editing MIDI in the event view acts right, and editing the same MIDI content in the piano roll acts wrong.  It's extremely frustrating!  Personally, I think who ever modified the behavior of the Piano Roll in Logic 10 should be fired on the spot.  I'd downgrade to 9 in a heartbeat if it was still available in the App Store.
Two examples off the top of my head:
    - Selecting a MIDI note in the event viewer selects ONLY the note and not all the MIDI objects that fall within the time span of that note. This is not the case in the piano roll as it assumes that when you select a note, you want *more* than just the note you're clicking on. This is a stupid assumption and is new in 10.
    - Dragging midi notes in the piano roll randomly deletes all non-note events and changes the action from "move" to "copy" where the only workaround when the piano roll gets stuck in this state is to do the same action in the event viewer.
Please rollback changes made to the piano roll in 10 back to what 9 was as I've wasted countless hours of my life trying to work around these flubs!

Try making a blank project with no settings at all and just add a bass from whatever plugin. Make sure there are no plugins at all on the track (not just muted but removed). Then try again.
I believe palying on the pianoroll with the mouse plays at 127 velocity but I ain´t sure. How about the output? Does it clip/go red? Then it will disort.

  • Enter triplet values in piano roll... and volume question

How can I get the piano roll grid view to temporarily change to subdivisions of 3 per per beat (instead of 4) in a 4/4 piece so I can align triplets?
Also, how do I change the volume of a single note in the piano roll editor?
    TIA

    1. In the transport bar, where you see the time signature (default 4/4), just below that is the beat subdivision. You can click on it and drag up or down to change the value. A value of 12 will subdivide a beat into thirds.
    2. You can't really change the volume of a note, per se, since volume is a MIDI parameter that doesn't apply to single notes, but rather as continuous data. You can, however, change the velocity of notes, which will affect the volume of the note if the note's velocity is programmed for volume change. To do this, choose the Velocity tool (escape, then 9) and click the note and drag up or down.

  • Transposing in Piano Roll with the Function

I have a tune that's 2 midi tracks (green), piano and sax.
I just want to transpose them without having to do it manually ,( selecting all the nots and nudging them up). I don't like doing that with a thousand notes.
Don't you just hate it when all your creative juice gets frazzeled because you can't do something that is incredibly easy with Garage Band but you can't figure it out with Logic?
I have spent at least a couple hours with the manual online and the book so as not to be scolded with RTFM.
This is Logic 8 . I can't find the manual for it online and maybe it matters ??
I think it can be done GB style from the Piano Roll> functions>Transform>transposition.
But for the life of me I can't find how to do it anywhere and it's not obvious from the dialog box

You can { I assume you mean CAN} just select the midi regions in the arrange window and then adjust the transposition to whatever you want using the transpose setting in the inspector? It takes like 0.2 of a second, I just timed myself.
I dont think this is correct - I never use the transpose setting in the inspector because it transposes the Score. I just tried your suggestion by going +2 and indeed an Eb part goes up to F... but this is the effect where Logic's Score Editor plays back the part in concert but shows a transposed part for printing ( as in transposing instruments - also the notes in the Piano Roll dont transpose)
@Bobsax try this ( I know you hate nudging the notes but once familiar with these steps it will not interrupt your creative flow):
1 - Open Key Commands. Type in: '*Transpose Event +1*' and '*Transpose Event -1*' and find out what the key commands are or program them ( I use simple the + and - signs on the numeric pad)
2 - Go back to the Arrange window and select both regions
3 - Open the Piano Roll on a separate screen set and zoom out so that you can check all the notes are highlighted - usually Screenset 6 by default. ( Dont do it in the Arrange as there is not usually enough space)
4 - With both regions selected, press + key (or minus if you are transposing down). Count carefully as many Semi Tones or Half Steps up or down you want to go. You will hear the midi notes sound as they go up or down
5 - If you make a mistake there is always UNDO or REVERT to SAVED
This operation takes me less then 5 seconds
