Weird problem inherited from old Mac?

Hello,
I've just invested in a new iMac (2.7ghz, intel core i5,4GB, DDR3 on OS 10.6.8) because I was getting really fed up of inexplicable problems with my old iMac (a pre Intel chip machine).
The main problem is that the old machine would regularly fail to connect to the internet, or would hang. Typically I would try to open a web page, it would simply hang for minutes going nowhere. Sometimesthe machine would get to the web page on the second or third refresh. Other times it would need Safari to be force quit or closed down.
This was happening in Safari and across three separate user accounts on the machine. It ran like this for months. As other apps started to get a bit clunky, I thought it was simply because the machine was creaking, old ... and full.
Therefore the decision to buy the new machine, connect with a USB cable, transfer all the files over - and look forward to lightning fast computing.
However, the following problems continue to manifest (these may be totally unrelated to each other, but I throw them all in, in case anyone recognised a pattern):
* Safari (and now Google Chrome) regularly hang when connecting to the internet. The machine is connected wirelessly - and at times it is hanging I have been able to test the wireless connection using both an iPad and a Windows 7 laptop, so know the Wireless connection is fine.
* The wireless mouse regularly disconnects itself from the Mac (I've changed the batteries - it makes no difference).
* Working in iPhotos to use the 'Faces' and 'Places' function (as well as tagging and titling images) sees the iPhoto app regularly freeze.
Here I have couple of questions to the community:
A - Might I have transferred a problem (virus? OS corruption? Other issue) to the new machine from the old, along with all the files?
B - Is there some sort of programme I can run on Mac to  ID possible problems/conflicts
Cheers for any help/advice anyone can offer.
Scott

Hi
For the unreliable internet connectivity is it feasible to try connecting using an ethernet cable, rather than connecting via wifi - just to start the trouble-shooting process.
If not, and you have to use wifi, have you tried changing the wifi channel? What wifi encryption are you using - if WEP change it to WPA
For the bluetooth mouse try making it a 'favourite': System Preferences>Bluetooth and select your mouse on the left. Below it is a cog, click on that and select 'show more options' click again and select 'make favourite'.
For the iPhoto problem, sorry can't help other than to ask how much RAM do you have, too little and it'll impact on performance.
Have you run Disk Utility and verified the disk and also repaired permissions.
You could also try running Onyx which does a variety of system housekeeping checks - make sure you download the correct version for your OS:

  • MY system folder, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac) How do I remove them

I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard 10.5.8. I had a problem with my my operating system (my fault, I moved a file I shoudnt have) couldnt boot up but was able to boot up from a backup. I managed to repair my original system except now all the system folders, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac).  For the most part the dupes are an exact copy, but not always.  I want to remove them to free up space and cant imagine duplicate folders in the /system/library are not hindering my computer. But I dont know where to start and am afraid of doing irreparable damage. Any ideas

how to move photoshop from old mac book air to new mac book pro retina display (no disc drive)?

It can be possible to use the Migration Assistant, but you must take into account that any recent Photoshop requires activation with a server account, like Apple iTunes does for purchases. To avoid potential problems, you want to make sure that you deactivate any software (like iTunes or Photoshop) that you have installed from any company that requires activation, and then reactivate them after you migrate. Otherwise it is possible that any software you activated might stop working if it notices that the underlying hardware has changed.
Also, you only get 2 activations of Photoshop and 5 of iTunes, so you don't want to lose any because you forgot to deactivate before getting rid of the old Mac.
Migration Assitant is not perfect, so the most reliable way to migrate is to deactivate Photoshop before migrating and then run a clean installation of it after migration using your original media and serial number.

you may be lucky, but you should expect problems if you do that.
you should properly install your adobe software using the adobe installation files.

  • How can I get music from old mac to new mac?

How can I get music from old mac to new mac please?
Can't seem to make Migration Assistant work. Doesn't ask about or transfer files.

I just migrated into a new MBP from an old one.
It did not bring the music over.  Apple's instructions are to use the Home Sharing feature of iTunes.
Open iTunes on your old Mac.  Select Home Sharing under the Advanced menu.  Sign in.  Do the same on your new computer.  Then when the library appears under Home Sharing on the left-hand panel on your new computer's iTunes, you can select all and Add To Library.
    That's what Apple says, anyway.

Hello, I have transferred my Acrobat XI Pro from old MAC to the new one. After the transfer can not open any PDF file. Any idea how to solve this?

    Hey ilyaz20360341,
Could you please specify how exactly did you transfer Acrobat from one MAC to other.
You might need to deactivate the software from your old machine and then activate it on the new one with the same serial number (for Acrobat license) or Adobe credentials (for Acrobat subscription).
If you have done the same way, then let me know if you are able to open Acrobat itself.
Do you get any specific error message while opening a PDF?
    Hope to get your response.
    Regards,
    Anubha

Call Apple and make a appointment.
You have 3 months of care and up to 3 years with paid AppleCare, let them handle it and bring everything in.
    Good Luck

  • New directory after Migration (/var (from old Mac)

I just set up a new Macbook Pro, and used the Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my old system. Everything went fine and looks good. However, I'm seeing a top level directory on the new HD:
    /var (from old Mac)
I assume it's a copy of the /var directory from the old MBP. My question is - can I safely remove it? It's taking up almost 4gb of space (sure on a 500gb hd that's not much, but if I don't need it...)

    A A P L wrote:
My (hidden) /var is 4+GB and that's normal.
it depends on how big your swap files get and on whether or not you are using safe sleep which tends to create large sleep image files. so for a laptop 4GB /var might be normal. on my mac pro it's around 600MB as I almost never run out of RAM to need swap files and and I don't use safe sleep. another reason it might get too big if you have a runaway log and /var/log grows too much. there is nothing else in /var that should take a lot of space.
But I agree, I would not delete it in case it's just "visible"
OP: IN the Finder, hit Command-Shift-G.
    Type: /private
Get info on the var folder there.
Is it the same as the visible one?
Or, you can Control-click on the Title-bar of the var folder window. The path with show in the drop-down. What does it show?

  • Just moved CS4 Web from old mac to new using time machine. Apps won't launch. Help?

Just moved CS4 Web from old mac to new using time machine. I get an error when I try to launch a program on the new computer (150:30). After contacting live chat about the issue and providing all serial numbers etc. I was directed to a download. The download was a .dmg file that my computer did not recognize. It was suggested that I ask the experts on the forum how to resolve the issue. I have all the discs and serial numbers but the new macbook pro doesn't take discs (I guess they think all apps are downloadable now). Any ideas?

Hmm... I don't know why they sent you here... CS4 is not part of the Cloud
I have some download links for earlier versions of Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements, but not CS4 Web
My best idea is to take a LARGE USB memory stick to a friend with a DVD drive and copy your DVD over to the USB memory stick
Or, ask in the forum for your program(s) to find out if anyone has CS4 download links
If you start at the Forums Index https://forums.adobe.com/welcome
You will be able to select a forum for the specific Adobe product(s) you use
Click the "down arrow" symbol on the right (where it says All communities) to open the drop down list and scroll

I did the transfer two times, same thing. first time I used the WiFi
and second time from my back up disk with USB connection, using Migration Assistant.
Second time also said that Paul'Mac already exist, Paul'Mac 2 created.

It will be using too much space on hard drive if Ileave it therre.

  • What is /var/root/Library (from old Mac) ??

After upgrading to Snow Leopard (10.6.2) I noticed in /var/root/ a folder called Library (from old Mac). I am assuming this is from the upgrade as there is a new Library folder with the update date. Can I delete this folder? Anyone know what it is for?

I also have this "var (from old Mac)" folder on the root level of my new iMac. It is not an alias, and it's full of other folders that are also not aliases. My MacBook does not have this folder. What can I do to either safely remove it or put it where it belongs?
I also have three other mysterious items in my root folder:
    * a folder just named with a tilde (~)
    * a document named "acrobat8pro-en_US
    * a document named "devicecentral1"
    * an application named "SF Universal Launcher" which weighs in at zero k.
    Any clues or remedies? Thanks!

  • Migration Assistant (from old mac)

    Hello all,
I just migrated my old data to my new Macbook Pro (from a Macbook) and I have noticed in the Macintosh HD there are some additional folders. Kind of duplicates. These folders are:
    Developer (from old mac)
    opt (from old mac)
    home (from old mac)
    backup (from old mac)
I know these are from the migration I did. But I am not sure how my current system uses them. Some are in fact empty (except the Developer and opt) But my question is can I delete these without causes any issues? Or is it best to just leave them alone.
    Any suggestions, thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
As long as they are marked from old Mac you can safely delete them.
The best time to migrate is when you first boot your new Mac, if you migrate at a later date you can get duplication, or even a new Home folder.
