Weird problem moving clips to timeline!

I'm using Premiere Pro CS6.0.3 in Win 7 64bit. Almost every time I start a new project, after I've imported my clips to the Project window, as soon as I move the first single clip to the timeline, ALL the clips jump to the timeline in random order, as if they were one big single clip!! Weird! If I Undo it, and then try again to move a single clip to the timeline, then it works okay...usually. Sometimes not, and the only way to correct it is to dump the clips and re-import them, or restart Premiere.
I figure this must be something I've overlooked in one of the setups, but I can't for the life of me figure out what. If I can get a single clip onto the timeline, then the rest of the session works just fine. Also, this doesn't seem to effect saved projects. Just happens when starting a brand new project.   Any ideas? Thanks!

When they get imported into a Bin they are all "selected" (Highlighted) in case one wants to do some other group action with them (eg Modify).
CTRL- A will deselect them (ie unhighlight them) allowing one to use them individually.
Clicking off them = click somewhere else apart from the Highlighted files.
Got it?

  • Weird Issue moving clips to timeline

Recently I've encountered a problem with Premiere Pro CS6 that I can't seem to fix nor find a solution for online.
I import a picture to my project and in the preview screen everything looks fine.  However, when I move it to my timeline, it has become zoomed way in and becomes pixelated.  This came out of nowhere and I can't seem to figure out what happened.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

  • Problem Moving Clips in the Timeline

When I edited previously, I was able to drag one clip close to another, and it would automatically go directly next to that clip in the timeline. Also, when using the razor tool, bringing the razor close to the playhead would cause the cut to be made exactly where the playhead was in the timeline. This suddenly stopped happening--now when placing one clip next to another, it does not automatically stop where the next clip begins, and I have to be very careful so that they don't overlap in the timeline. The razor tool is likewise not drawn to the playhead.
I'm sure that I must have inadvertently hit a button that caused this, but cannot figure out what I did. I've looked around trying to find out how to fix the problem, but I haven't been able to find anything. I'm sure the answer is probably quite obvious, so I appreciate the understanding, and I would be very grateful for any help.

    Welcome to the forum!
Sounds like you have inadvertently turn Snapping off. The n key toggles it off and on. There should also be a button near the upper right of the Timeline window for it.

  • Problem dragging clips to timeline...

I am pretty new to this so there is probably an answer right under my nose. Anyway, when I import .jpg's over to my clip viewer they show up but when I click to drag to timeline they gray out and won't move to timeline. I have been working on this project for a couple of days and did not have this issue prior to this morning. Help?
    Thanks much,
    Chris

Finally fixed same problem today. Here is what I found in Making a Movie in iMovie by Jeff Carlson. It worked for me.
Open disk utility which is located in the utilities folder within application folder. Choose your start up disk and clik to repair permissions and do that for all disks if you have more than one and restart your computer.
It solved my problem. Good luck!

  • Moving clips in timeline

This is probably really simple but I can't figure it out.
I have a clip on V1 and want to move it up to V2. I don;t want to slip the clip. Shift dragging it doesn't constrain it. How can I do it please?

NOt locked or turned off. The clip moves up there it just also slips in time. Perhaps this is a trash preferences thing then?

  • How do i move a clip on timeline a frame at a time

    Hi
    I have cs6.
I am having problems moving clips slightly on the timeline, ie frame by frame, when i try to move I dont get the fine control, it jumps a second.
How do I get fine control?
Also, with cs5.5 I could zoom in/out of the timeline, using the 'mountains' to drazg right left etc. I dont have this on CS6 ?? any ideas
    Many thanks
    Chris Anderson

If your mouse is over the zoom/scroller bar (in the timeline or below any of the monitors):
it will zoom in and out just by rolling the wheel
SHIFT + wheel makes it zoom faster
ALT + wheel makes it pan
ALT + SHIFT + wheel = pan faster

  • I am moving clips to the timeline and they arrive zoomed in.  how can I stop this?

need some help.  I'm moving clips to the timeline and they arrive zoomed in.  I don't want this effect.  How can I stop it?

To expand a little on John's questions and link, every clip and every sequence has its own frame dimensions (and pixel aspect ratio & frame rate). By default, Premiere preserves the dimensions (or "resolution") of a clip when you add it to a sequence. That means that if a clip's resolution is greater than that of the sequence, it will appear to be zoomed in on the frame. Conversely, if the clip is lower res than the sequence, it will appear shrunk, with black borders.
If all of your content is the same resolution (which is the ideal case), then you should use a sequence that matches. The easiest way to do so is the "New Item" method that John refers to--dragging a clip to the Project Panel's New Item button--or, in later releases of PPro CC, dragging it into an empty Timeline panel. If you're working with content of mixed resolution, then you have to pick your poison and scale smaller clips up or larger clips down. The latter option is generally preferred because the former--scaling clips up--often results in unacceptable pixelation.

  • Weird problem and I need your help!

    Hello,
I'll keep this short and hopefully someone will be able to give me a simple answer to this problem - it's been driving me nuts for days!
Here's the situation, as concise as I can be:
    - import clips from my video camera to iMovie, no problem
    - sort clips, edit them, throw them into the timeline, no problem
    - add transitions, effects, titles, no problem
    - export to Quicktime so I can watch it on my computer and share it on my computer network - no problem, the movie looks great
    Here's the problem!
    - I now want to burn the Quicktime movie, as is, on to a DVD
    - I put the movie into Toast, tell it to do what it does
    - Toast burns great
    - When I watch the DVD, there's a constant weird flickering, especially when the camera is moving. It's not anything extra, it's like a kind of strobe effect on the whole thing. It looks almost like it's having trouble keeping up with the picture. I wish I could show you but it only happens with a DVD player... and I've tried it on several TVs and DVD players.
I've burned AVI files with Toast the exact same way and have no problems.
What am I doing wrong? I don't want to use iDVD because I don't want any menus and titles and all that - just the movie. It looks great on my computer but as soon as I watch it on a TV, it looks like ... well, it flickers. I've tried burning with different settings and resolutions, but it always comes out the same.
I hope this makes sense to someone. Help?
    tubaindy
ps. In case you are wondering, I need it on DVD to mail to some relatives overseas who are afraid of new things - but they are able to put a DVD in the tray, which is all I want... they put in the DVD, it plays a movie. That's all.

    1. Start up Terminal by using Spotlight or starting it from Applications -> Utilities
    2. Type: killall OpaqueMenuBar (case sensitive spelling)
Nothing should come up as a result. If it says "no processes belong to you were found" check the spelling or skip to the next step
    3. Go to your applications folder (commandshiftA in Finder) and drag the OpaqueMenuBar app to the trash
    4. Go into the System Preferences -> Desktop, change the wallpaper to something else and then back again.
    Uninstallation should be complete.

  • Problems pasting clips into another imovie

I am trying to paste a clip from one imovie project to another. I copy the clip from project A, open project B, and hit the paste command. I get the importing files box and the preparing message, but it takes forever and I am just trying to import a 6 second clip. If I force quit imovie, when I reopen it, it has placed a 9.24 GB file in the trash of the project B, called clip01_1. This is not what I copied or tried to paste. Why does it do this? What needs to be done to correct this situation? I have tried pasting with no clips in the timeline, several clips in the timeline, one clip in the timeline. I have successfully moved clips in the past, but I can't do it now!

    Thanks. Your description helps.
I converted and imported dozens of analog video tapes
into iMovie. They contain various events in a
disorganized manner, as I would leave the same tape
in and just keep recording different events, until it
was full. My goal was to open each imported "tape"
in iMovie, edit and sort out the clips, name them,
and place them in various folders on my desktop.
If the suggestions made in a moment don't work, please answer these questions to make sure I "get it"...
    1. Each imported analog tape arrived in one very long clip, right? And you want to split up that clip into several smaller clips, and keep just some of those clips?
    ---Keep and name accordingly, yes.
    2. Will you have gazillions of small clips in the project, or just a few? (If there are many, many clips you need some sort of automatic method for handling the clips. If there are only a few, a manual method will work.)
--Many clips. I will put this in caps just to emphasize my goal. It will be a common theme throughout. I JUST WANT TO SAVE INDIVIDUAL CLIPS TO A FOLDER ON MY DESKTOP.
    3. Are all the tapes in one iMovie project or did you import each tape to its own project?
--Each tape is in its own project. and there are numerous clips of my dog (as an example) spread over all the tapes. This is why I JUST WANT TO SAVE INDIVIDUAL CLIPS TO A FOLDER ON MY DESKTOP.
    4. Do you have QuickTime Pro? If not, are you willing to buy it? ($30 from Apple.)
---I would rather not add yet another layer of convoluted nonsense and expense to this situation, if I can help it. What will QTP do that QT 7.03 can't?
    5. Is it crucial that you end up with one file for each clip, or is a collection of topic-related clips sharing the same iMovie project sufficient?
---1 file for each clip is necessary. As an example, on 1 analog imported tape, I may have video of my dog, video of a friends BBQ and a fishing trip. Within each "theme" (BBQ, fishing trip etc..) , I may want to split up the video of my dog into various clips and name them accordingly. Such as "dog chasing ball", "dog swimming". The friends BBQ might have clips such as "friend puking", "friend stepping in puke", "friend putting cheese on burger" etc... On my Desktop I would have folders called "Dog", "BBQ", "Fishing" etc.. As I go through each project, I would extract and name all clips and either "share, export, massage, excise, resect, snip, cut, paste, incise, remove, chop, crop, trim etc..." or whatever magic word it takes to get that F^&%ing clip, AS NAMED, into a folder on the desktop that I choose. This, I was silly enough to think, could be done with a simple "Save As"/Desktop/<Folder> command. So, after wasting my money on iLife '05 which is supposed to "simplify my digital life", I now need to find some way to engage in a frustrating game of software masturbation, and possibly, additional cost, to accomplish this otherwise simple and benign task. How might I proceed?
Basically my destop folder structure should end up looking like this.
    DOG STUFF FOLDER
    dog running clip
    swimming
    dog chasing ball clip
    playing with frisbee
    in car
    playing guitar
    VACATIONS FOLDER
    FISHING
    big fish
    small fish
    stupid fish
    MEXICO
    drinking tequila
    drinking more tequila
    falling down
    getting up
    ....and so forth
Now, all I would have to do is import DOG STUFF FOLDER clips into a project called DOG PROJECT. Then, go to VACATIONS FOLDER and import FISHING and MEXICO into their own, or the same, iMovie projects, depending on space. Etc...
Here's the big problem: unlike digital video, analog video may not have a timecode. Without a timecode, iMovie can't separate it into clips when you import it to a project. As important here, you can't define the clips, export the project to the camera, then re-import it without losing the clip separations.
--Not my goal anyway to re-import anything to tape. I don't mind large 40 minute clips, as long as I can break them up as I see fit. And.. SAVE INDIVIDUAL CLIPS TO A FOLDER ON MY DESKTOP.
If it's okay to lose your clip separations, then that's an easy solution. Split the large clip into smaller ones, discard the clips you don't want to keep, export to the camera, then re-import to a new project. Discard the old project. The new project will contain only the video you want to keep.
---I could do the same with a VHS deck and my camcorder. So, what do I need iMovie for? Again, not my goal. I just want to SAVE INDIVIDUAL CLIPS TO A FOLDER ON MY DESKTOP.
Instead of exporting to the camera you could export to a Full Quality DV QuickTime movie that you either store on the hard disk or import to a new imovie project.
--This doesn't work well if I want to first parse all my clips from all my tapes that contain my dog in them and then import them all into a new project all at once. Or am I missing something?
There is a way to convert each (split) clip into its own Media file. When you apply a special effect to any clip iMovie creates a new file containing just the special-effected clip. If doesn't matter what the effect is. So, try this: Select a clip, activate the Effects tab, configure a Sharpen filter with the minimum sharpening, then Apply. Double-click on the sharpened clip and note it now has its own file. When you Copy and Paste that clip THAT's what gets copied, not its original source file.
---Ok..but I don't want effects on the clip. I just want to SAVE INDIVIDUAL CLIPS, AS IS, TO A FOLDER ON MY DESKTOP
You can apply a special effect to all the clips in the whole project at the same time. Drag all the original clips to the Clips pane. Option-drag each back to the timeline, which copies it (without duplicating its source file.) Split the timeline clip as you like. Discard the parts you don't want to keep. The timeline now contains all the clips you want to keep.
Select All the clips and apply the minimum Sharpen filter to all together. Wait. Rendering will take a while. Save. Now Copy and Paste the clips to whichever projects you want. A single file will arrive with each Pasted clip. Or you can drag them to Finder folders.
--Precisely.. This is another form of wasted time, effort and software masturbation that I was describing. I do not want to sit for hours while my clips render, just to accomplish something else that had nothing to do with applying effects to the clips in the first place. Once I have all the raw clips in a project, I plan on giving them to a professional video person to make a video. That's why, ALL I WANT TO DO IS SAVE INDIVIDUAL CLIPS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE FOLDERS ON THE DESKTOP.
Karl, I do appreciate your help and my tone has nothing to do with you. I'm just hoping you might be able to help me. I'm just steaming out of my ears that I gave up the PC world to use Macs precisely for the very reason of getting away from all this crap of doing a million stupid things to accomplish a goal. It's like scratching my right ear with my left foot. If I wanted to do that, I would stick with a PC!! At least, this way, I can be just as frustrated for a lot cheaper.
(Be sure to pretest this method to make sure the video you create with the special effect is okay. If a DVD is your goal, burn a DVD of the special-effected clips. You want to make sure the special effect doesn't change the appearance of the clip.)

  • Random frame at end of every clip in timeline.

Hello, I'm running Premiere Pro CS6 and having a serious problem. I'll try to explain it as basic as I can as it's kind of complicated. Say I bring in a clip of just red solid color and cut that clip into 5 separate clips. And then I bring in a clip of just green solid color into the time line. If I then play it, for some reason the very last single frame of all the red clips will be the green clip. So playing it would look like red clip > single frame of green > red clip > single frame of green ect. It also mysteriously pops up even where there are no clips as seen in the attached photo. I cut an entire video with out having this problem then went back to make changes and it popped up once. Now the second video I just began cutting it has been rampant since the beginning. It is there so much I am unable to cut. The single frame seems to embed itself into the other clips and even if the original clip is shortened or lengthened it stays at the end. I have tried deleting render area, moving clips, restarting ect. Any help would be great, thanks.
BTW It's MTS footage from a Sony FS100 on a 2012 MBP with Premiere CS6.0
As you can see there are no clips where the play head is at, yet this single frame still shows up. It also shows up at the end of each of the clips when played in the timeline.

Yes I did, and it still is. In fact I scrapped the entire project, started a new one and 3 clips in it's doing it again. Really All I'm left with is reinstalling the software which I did not want to do. In the mean time I've even upgraded from 4gb's of RAM to 16. I'd cut in FCP 7, but that program can't cut the MTS with out transcoding like CS6 can so I may be stuck with glitchy playback when is more than insufferable while trying to cut.

  • IMovie '11 on 10.6.8 greys out contents of library, so I cannot drag and drop clips to timeline.

This has happened on multiple occasions. I don't know why Apple can't figure out how to create a reliable program. I have been using iMovie for several months now, updated to '11 in April, on OSX 10.6.8, and usually it works fine, but occasionally, out of the blue, all of the clips in my library will be greyed out. I cannot edit them in timeline unless I go to each clip individually and open up the separate editing window, I cannot drag and drop the clips to timeline, I have to manually copy and paste, and I cannot see any of the clips unless I roll over them with my mouse. My free trial of Final Cut Pro just expired and I have a couple of videos that are almost finished and this is extremely frustrating. I have seen others with similar experiences and I'm wondering if there is anything at all I can do about it. Thank you.
P.S. I did try restarting the program about 5 times and restarted my computer. Nothing gives.

Of course, I might have found a fix right after posting this. In case someone else comes along with the same issue...
I closed my MBP cover, and re-opened (this solved a menu bar issue I was also having). I re-opened iMovie, and deleted the project I had started that couldn't be continued. I started a new project, and things seemed to work just fine. So I'm not sure what it was that caused the problem, but so far it seems to be working now. Good luck!

  • Can't see clip preview in clip or timeline view

This may be a simple problem, but I am brand new to this. I am making a movie out of photos, and the process seems simple. I drag a photo from my iphoto library (from the photos pane) into the clip view (or timeline). The image is imported and the movie looks correct when played, but in the clip (or timeline) view below all imported clips are just black. So I can't really easily edit the clips because I have no idea which one is which (besides looking at the filename!). The images I am importing are jpegs and like I said it has no problem playing the movie correctly I just see what I am working with in the clip view. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the forum!
The image is imported and the movie looks correct when played, but in the
clip (or timeline) view below all imported clips are just black.
    Very strange.
To make sure we understand what you see... The imported image plays okay on the timeline after it's imported, but its thumbnail in the timeline is black. Instead of the thumbnail showing the imported image, the thumbnail is black. Correct?
Does the imported clip play black too?
The only thing I can think of that makes a clip play black is when the Ken Burns Effect is set to pan above/below the image or left/right of the image. Then, instead of importing the image, Ken Burns imports the black border along one side of the image.
To unset the pan so Ken Burns is centered over the image, do this:
    1. Click on any image in the iPhoto library.
    2. Turn ON the Ken Burns checkbox.
    3. Click in the "Start" half of the Start/End thingy.
    4. Drag the zoom slider (the slider with the small/large face profile) a bit to the right, then all the way to the left.
    5. Click on the "End" half of the thingy and repeat #4.
Now the import is centered. If the pan was causing the problem, that should fix it.

  • Weird problems with Leopard on iMac G5

I've started having some weird problems—I think they may have started after running iDefrag, please no discussions about whether to defrag or not, but I'd done it before since upgrading to Leopard and nothing like this ever happened—sometimes while looking at a picture in Preview I'll click outside the frame onto the desktop, but it won't switch to the Finder, no matter how many times I click, also sometimes the computer will go to sleep *while I'm using it* (i.e. moving the mouse); I have set to put the display to sleep after five minutes of inactivity, and the computer never (I donate my CPU cycles).
Also sometimes when I click on the Firefox icon in the Dock it appears as well in another section (so I have two FF icons at once)--I've been having some problems with FF and I think it's a bad profile but would this be related?
All this started within the past week or so, but there wasn't a clear-cut before-and-after with the defragging (I did run OWC Media Scanner for the very first time, but it didn't find any errors, so presumably it didn't change anything), so I'm a little stumped. I ran Disk Utility and DiskWarrior, but the former didn't find anything and the latter only found a custom flag icon error.

  • Drag & drop audio clip from timeline to project window ?

i no longer can drag a clip from timeline to the project window & then breakout the clip to mono by selecting clip - audio options- breakout to mono - now when i drop an audio clip from timeline into the project window it does not show up anywhere in the project window - did an update get rid of this function ? it was much better than having to go back to the unedited original source & start from scratch ...

thanx for your time Jim - i understand that would be the preferred method but that was a quick fix until recently i have noticed that i can no longer do it by just grabbing the edited clip & drop it in project window so that i can modify just that portion of the original files properties - it still functions that way on a friends machine - was just kinda weird that i can't get it to work that way any more …
