Weird rattling sound

I have a weird rattling sound coming from my G4. Could it be a loose hard drive or fan?
Thanks

Look most closely at the little fan that draws air over the heatsink. It rattles before finally dying in my experience.

  • Harsh rattling sound coming from fan.

Normally, when I use an application that requires a lot of CPU power or when I'm watching a YouTube video, the internal fan speeds up to 6000+ RPM but it started sounding weird the past week. Right when I "wake up" my MacBook from sleep, I here a faint rattling sound coming from where the fan should be but it disipates after a few minutes. When I view a video though, the rattling becomes a bit louder combined with the normal sound of the fan. Also, I noticed when I picked up my macbook when its fan was going fast and tilted it to its sides, the rattling sound corresponds with the movement of the computer (louder each time I tilted it left to right).
Could the fan be broken/loose? I sprayed some air into the keyboard to get rid of dust but nothing changed. I recently ran out of my Applecare warranty last September. Thanks in advance!

    Hey
Sorry to say but you could be looking at a hardware problem. That being said there are still things you can  try.
Try this artile: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 for an SMC reset.
If that does not work make sure all of your software is up to date. If it is, you may have a hardware problem.
Run the Apple hardware test that came on the disc with the computer to see if it comes up with anything... Although sometimes it doesn't even if there is a problem.

  • Msi 5870 1gb reference design rattling sound

    Hello everyone,
I just joined MSI forum to get some help.
I have MSI 5870 1GB reference design and I had this card about a year now.
Few days ago I started to receive rattling noise coming from my 5870.
When I play intensive graphic games, I get this rattling sound once in a while. I found out that I am getting a rattling noise when I start or stop intense graphic use.
I started MSI kombuster and I get little rattling noise at the beginning and I also get rattling sound when I stop. I keep repeating to use msi kombuster to start and stop to get rattling noise.
I hold the side of the card (not the fan) with my one finger and rattling sound was gone. Rattling will come back again, but whenever I touch the card, rattling sound will be gone.
I am just worried if my fan is dying or if this is something else. I don't want to touch the fan while running. Please advice.
    Thanks in advance.

Take a cardboard tube, like from a paper towel roll, and make sure the sound is coming from the vid card.  I know you said that if you touch the card the rattling stops, but let's make sure it really is coming from the card.  Next, with the power off, pull the video card and blow it out with compressed air.  Re-seat the card firmly and re-connect the power cables.  Turn on the machine.  Does it still rattle?
Thanks for you reply. Now I have to wait for rattling sounds to come back lol. I have rattling sounds 2 or 3 times a day, so I probably have to play some games and wait for those rattling sounds again. If I get a rattling sound again, I'll use paper towel rolll to make sure it's the card.
I don't have any problem with my card though. Performance is awesome and never having any problems playing games. Maybe I am just very sensitive.
I'll update you guys later tonight.

  • Rattling sound when using Shake to Shuffle

When I shake my ipod to shuffle songs there's a rattling sound which sounds like somethings loose inside my ipod is this normal?

No. Have you ever dropped the iPod Nano? You can always have it checked out at an Apple Store if worried.

  • Iphone 4 rattling sound near camera

whenever I put the phone on a surface (when the unit is in horizontal position and not on hand), I hear a rattling sound. Also when I shake it, I hear a rattling sound near the camera. What could it be? Should I take it on the store? Or is it just normal?

Yes this is sort of normal.
All Iphone 4S have this issue. It's the shutter/ focus ring of the camera.
    Test it yourself:
Go to camera mode, tap on the phone to reproduce the sound and focus the camera while tapping it.
You will notice the sound changing/ getting less.
There is a difference between Iphones 4S. One has it louder than the other. If it is too loud or too disturbing, contact your Apple center.

  • Weird ticking sound when adjusting the volume...

    Hi all
When adjusting the volume using the F3 F4, my new ibook 12" g4 makes a weird ticking sound before it catches up an adjusts the volume with the normal "blop" sound. Is this normal? Batteri is on "normal."
    Thanks
    Erlend

I have this same problem with my new 1.33Ghz iBook G4. I've had the logic board replaced twice and the top assembly with the speakers replaced twice also. It still makes the ticking noise and it's quite specific to reproduce so none of the Apple tech have spent the time to reproduce it. I think this problem is more wide spread than Apple realizes.
Here are the factors that HAVE to exist for this problem to be reproduced:
    1. The computer must be have the AC adapter unplugged and running off of the battery.
    2. Un-click "Play feedback when volume is changed" in System Preferences under "Sound" (While this is not exclusive to having the "ticking audio" problem occur, it is easier to notice with this box unchecked)
    3. 10.4.2 or 10.4.3 (even happens on a fresh install)
    4. Push the F4 and F5 keys to change the volume for at least 10-20 seconds and the "ticking sound" will occur. (the lagging after the tick is most annoying.)
Launching iTunes and playing audio will temporarily make this problem subside. Once this problem occurs with "Play feedback when volume is changed" unchecked, it will continue until audio is played or the sound preference panel is accessed. Often the sound balance will be 100% to the left after this problem has started occuring. (Checking the Sound preference panel shows this)
Has anyone had this problem fixed permanently? Apple seems to be unaware of this problem. 10.4.4 could fix it. Unfortunately we are not even sure if this is a hardware problem or a software issue. I will post with details of what happens when I bring my machine in to the Apple store for the 4th or 5th time.

  • Lumia 1020 rattle sounds

    Hello!
Is it normal for the camera module on a Nokia Lumia 1020 to make a rattle sound when shaken lightly, like there would be a bead loose inside, when the phone is completely turned off?
I know it is normal for the OIS to make such sounds, but does this apply for the situation when the phone is powered down?
    Thank you.

  • Weird Mail sound

Does anyone else's email alert sound have a weird hiss sound after it plays -- BING, then a quick sisss
    Very odd.

On my MacBook Pro 13.3 Retina I hear a kind of white noise in the following cases:
    1) Just after plugging-in my headphones and it lasts about 1 min.
    2) Once a system sound (notification of smth else) has palyed. It lasts some 10-15 sec. and ends with a click sound.
I know that people are able to hear deferent frequences depending on their age: younger people can hear frequences that are inaudible to older ones. Thay would be nice that Apple finally fix it, as it's frustrating to work with headphones on.

  • Weird clicking sound every few seconds.

When i open the powerbook from being asleep, it starts up and everything is fine... every few seconds i hear a weird click sound, i'm guessing its the HD, and somthing is wrong with the moving parts. I have not dropped or damaged the powerbook in anyway. I first heard the noise when opening the top after being away few for an hour.
Has anyone else had a problem like this?

With hard drives it's not a matter of if it will fail, it's when. Since they are made of moving parts generally when you begin to hear clicking noises, it's a sign to backup your stuff and then worry about running some diagnostics. If you have applecare you should run techtool and it should tell you with a small margin or error if it's good. Now just because it says that the drive is still good can also not mean that it isn't in the process of going bad. So, keep a good backup of all your stuff on an external drive. I use superduper to do a full backup of my system once a week on a external firewire drive that's bootable if i need it. It will do a "smart update" of your data when you backup after the first time saving you a lot of time.
If you don't have applecare, try and find a friend that does or take your computer to your local apple authorized service center. They will have access to the gsx (global service exchange) website which has specific diagnostic bootable cd's for each model of computer. They should be able to tell you if it's bad or not. If you find a friend that has applecare, just use his techtool cd. Just Boot from the cd and run the diagnostics, don't install the app on your mac as that would be illegal.
    Hope this helps

IF you only hear vibrate, then turn the switch up to ringer using the side control.  You probably have it on silent or vibrate.
If you're using a case remove the case and make the swtich.

Is this thing a piece of junk?  My MacBook Air is running fine.  I've literally only charged the MacBook Pro battery a handful of times -- it's brand new.

At these prices don't screw around.  Just call applecare to arrange an appointment at the nearest apple store.
Alternatively post in the Macbook Pro forum.  This is the Mac Pro forum.

  • Weird rattling noise iphone 5

Does anyone else have a problem with their brand new iphone 5 making a small but annoying rattling sound when lightly shaken?

Hi! I got the iPhone 5 yesterday, 32G black, it also has a slight rattle inside. I noticed it within an hour of receiving it. I took the phone to one of our local Apple Store's, a tech opened the phone and said it was the vibration motor. He returned the phone to me and said it needs to be be fixed, but since the 5 is new Apple hasn't released a fix yet. He also ran a full diagnostic test, the phone is functioning properly, but the rattle is annoying. I submitted an online case with Apple Express Lane, suggest others do the same, the more cases they get the faster it will be resolved.

  • Weird Bubble Sound Happens Randomly

every once in a whiel, randomly, my iphone will make a weird bubble sound. it's not the sound that it makes when you send a text message, it's some other sound.
but it happens randomly. i can't figure out what's triggering it. and nothing happens when it makes this sound. the screen doesn't turn back on, i get no notification, no text, no email, no messages from anything, nothing from any of my apps
i have no idea what this random sound is. does anyone have any idea what this is or what it means?

The developers know about it. The last post in the thread above points to the following:
Here is the response from Life360, we found the culprit.
    Charles K., May 04 01:30 pm (CDT):
    Hello,
Thank you for your feedback. This noise happens when an error message populates in the application. We have passed your feedback onto the developers to see if they would like to change the noise or remove it completely. Thank you for using Life360.
    Charles
Apparently there is no notification bubble since the noise is associated with something that is not supposed to happen. It's a bug.
    Mystery solved.
