Weird Screen Burn (?) on iMac 24inch

I know there are dozens of threads about screen burn and uneven displays but I think my iMac has conjured up a new problem.
Recently i've noticed a number of 'rays' beaming down from the top of the display. I can't imagine how this would be screen burn as nothing fits the pattern burned. There are also a few 'blobs' around the screen that are noticeably darker.
Have tried cleaning the screen and have turned it off for 2days to rest it. Both to no avail.
It's getting very distracting/irritating and, I believe, progressively worse ;
Its a 24inch white imac 2.16 and is under a year old.

I would like to add my name to list of screen problems as well. just in the last few weeks my iMac 24" screen (white) has had the same problems with 'rays' beaming down from the top of the display. There are also a few 'blobs' around the screen that are noticeably darker. Exactly as 'Deci' has pictured in his first post. and I am afraid it is going to get worse.
so far this forum hasn't been any help, it is the white iMac so the screen cannot be removed to be cleaned (if it is in fact dirt), and it can't be cleaned on the front because the 'rays' are behind the screen.
It is one of the original iMac's and I have had a for almost two years with no problems until this recently started happening, and it's very distracting/frustrating as I am a graphic designer and use my iMac for work.
any solution to this from anyone, (Apple?!) on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
Help someone!! Deci if you ever find a solution please let me know, thanks!!

  • Weird screen pattern freezes iMac, can't boot from HD or DVD

I woke up today to find the screen of my iMac black with a sparse pattern of bright pixels on it. I wasn't able to power down holding the Power buton so I unplugged it and left it for a bit before plugging back in. I was then able reboot without any problems. Then a few hours latter a weird pattern appeared across my screen, kind of rolling, animated in spots as seen here:
I powered down, started it up and the screen had this pattern on it:
It froze during startup at the point shown in the photo with the Apple logo. I powered down, unplugged, plugged back in and then tried booting up from my Snow Leopard install disc. It also froze on the logo screen. Another attempt brought up the "You need to restart your computer…" message in different languages shown here:
I figured it was having a kernel panic so I did some searching around and followed instructions on The X Lab - Resolving Kernel Panics page and Apple's Kernel Panic Troubleshooting page. I unplugged everything but my mouse (wireless keyboard) and tried booting into Safe Mode. The screen still had the same pattern but it froze again during startup, the grey progress bar having disappeared.
I can't boot from my hard drive or from a DVD and the pattern is always on screen when I turn the iMac back on. I can't run Apple Hardware Test. I'm stuck but I'm wondering if anyone knows what the cause might be or has any suggestions on how to fix it or even get it to boot up somehow.
I have TechTool Pro and a large flash drive. I'm going to try creating a bootable USB drive with Snow Leopard on it from this backup computer and try to get TechTool Pro on it as well. I'll report back but I'd really appreciate any feedback on this problem.

Some things to report. First, the night before any of this happened, I noticed the fan was running when there wasn't really any reason for it. The computer was idle, no major tasks running. I'm wondering if perhaps the videocard overheated and is causing problems. Perhaps the temperature sensors are screwed up?
Today I got a USB keyboard hooked up and reset the PRAM. Still unable to boot but the pattern on the screen did change from the mess of b&w squigglies above to vertical bars as shown here:
Trying to boot normally or in Safe Mode both result in the spinning wheel freezing and halting startup.
I found powering down then gets weird. It's like it tries to turn on again but can't after a second. Or sometimes it will and the mouse lights up, I can hear the optical drive but the screen stays dark. At that point I need to unplug and try again.
I tried booting from Snow Leopard install DVD during one of these weird cycles and could hear it trying to access the optical drive but I don't believe it even got to the chime stage.
I attempted booting from the install DVD again after unplugging. No luck there but instead of a frozen spinning wheel, it brings up the "You need to restart message…". Other methods don't do this.
Still at a loss to find a reason for this but it appears to be a hardware problem, no doubt the video card based on the screen issues. Does any of this shed any light on what the problem is or (even better) how to fix it?

I re-read my discription of the screen and it is worded very accurately, as I close my eye's and imagine the words I see this weird screen as described. When this first occured I tried booting from cd (holding c key down) 5+ minutes and nothing (x5). I pulled the battery a week ago to clear cache, also disconnected power sup. from mother board, hoping for a magical self healing effect from complete discharge of residual currents in board or cache. I'm going to try bring life back to it today. and try the Imac boot commands just for fun (?). I may have lacked the patience needed when doing CUDA, programmers resets, so I will approach with a more zen like mind set this time. • IMac issues: Overheating, Software Crashing, Screen Burn

    To whomever is helpful,
My 24" iMac, early 2008 model has been experiencing problems that have gotten progressively worse over the past three months. The iMac began to heat up more than usual, and it's gotten hotter progressively over that course. The iMac is almost unusable after thirty minutes unless the screen brightness is turned down as low as possible. Software crashes, everything from advanced programs such as the Adobe suite, and the Chrome web browser which is not supposed to tax the memory very much, if at all. I have 4 gigs of RAM installed, and I believe the issue is heat related. As a sidenote, if the iMac gets hot enough, there is screen burn when moving application windows, and they disappear only after 10 minutes in sleep mode.
In my mind, all of this is abnormal, and earlier today I tok my iMac to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store, and the Genius didn't spend five minutes diagnosing my problems likely because there was a long line of people waiting. All he told me was to go home and run Activity Monitor and Disk Utility to see if there's a problem, and also to reinstall the operating system and the applications that crash. I've tried that, and as expected it didn't do anything, and I'm wondering if anyone has insight that could be of use, and if maybe I should send my iMac to AppleCare for them to look at it. Any help would be greatly appreciated appreciated.
    Regards,
    -Chad

Chad, very sorry to hear of your problems.
If your Mac is still under warranty (sounds like it might be) I'd suggest the following.
Call Apple, and politely request they send a warranty tech to your location to address the issue.
Ask that the tech come prepared to replace your Mac if they are unable to fix it.
Although I am not an expert, this doesn't sound like a problem you could have caused. If you didn't break it, you shouldn't have to be involved in fixing it. You paid good money for a product, and you deserve to have it.
Again, I'm assuming you're still under warranty.
If you decide to try this, I hope you'll report how it works out for you, so we can learn from your experience. Thanks, and good luck!

I have a mid 2007 imac 24 inch. Recently i noticed that there was some kind of screen burn in. It is not the regular screen burn in since it disapears slightly when i turn it of for about an hour. Does anyone else has the same problem and does anyone know a solution.
    thanks

  • Screen burn on my new imac?

I've read that LCD monitors can't get screen burn, but I sure see some faint images of where icons are/were on my desktop. I'm not happy about this. I just purchased this intel imac in November. I do have apple care but not pleased about losing the computer for a week or more. Is there anything to try?

  • IMAC 24Inch with NVidia 256 MB graphics card CRASHED NO SCREEN STARTUP HELP

HI there, wondering if anyone has had their nvidia GT graphics card crash then the screen go black?
I got home tonight, my ali imac 24inch, looks like its off, I turn it on, everything boots up but no
screen. Ive shared the screen through my macbook and look at the system info and it says under graphics displays "No information found" What does this mean? Has my graphics card destroyed itself?
    It better not have! HELP!!!

Actually you may find that you have more success with an AMD\ATI Radeon video card.
I have experienced that with some motherboards, specifically Pegatron motherboards.
The problem is that you are delving into the DIY gaming PC realm and  trying to do it with a prebuilt desktop PC.
Upgrading a prebuilt PC does not always result in a success story. Don't even consider trying to install cutting edge gaming memory modules. That will be a definite disappointment for you.
You may get lucky with an AMD Radeon HD video card.
But...You might just run into the same frustrating scenario you are facing today. I wish I had better news to give you.

  • IMac screen burn

I was 3D rendering something since Friday and I got to my iMac (one of the new ones - yes, the ones that keep freezing) and I was surprised the machine hadn't gone to sleep, but the animation had rendered and all was fine until I noticed that I've now got screen burn where the bright white wireframe lines of the 3D model have now created slight ghosting of the screen where they've been.
I wasn't aware that flat screens could get screen burn... will they fade or am I stuck with them now?
    Andy

Having come back to the machine after a few hours, the effects definitely seem to have faded. I'll try leaving the "flurry" screensaver on when I leave the office tonight and see if that helps (much the same as the iTunes visualiser).
    Thanks for your suggestion,
    Andy

  • Early 2008 iMac screen burn

I have an early 2008 24" iMac which has been our faithful family computer.  It started slowing down quite a bit so we bought a new one for home.  I then replaced the existing HD with an OWC SSD.  It helped immensely, like having a new computer.
Brought it to the office, upgraded OS to Yosemite, running Parallels and Windows 8.  Suddenly I have screen burn.  Never had this problem before upgrades.  I've only had it at the office for the past 1 week.
Now I have to admit, I don't think she's gone into sleep mode at night so I need to check the settings.  But I can't believe this happened so quickly.  Is there anything I can do to fix the problem or is my screen irreparably damaged?  By the way, I tried Jscreenfix without success.
    Thanks in advance
    John

It's actually not screen burn, so you don't need to worry about that. Please read Apple's advice on the subject:

  • IMac 24" Screen Burn-in When Using iDVD

I had a 1.5 hr long video that burned using iDVD. I found that if I use iDVD the screensaver will NEVER turn on. So, when the iDVD finished I found that a bit of screen burn-in is stuck on my screen.
Seeing that this is an LCD I thought it was true that LCD's couldn't have burn-in like CRT's could but I'm guessing I'm mistaken on that.
Does anyone know how I can fix the burn-in and also how to get the screensaver to work with iDVD so it doesn't happen again?
    - Joshua

Bringing this up from the almost dead....
...to setup a Hot Corner to sleep the display go to: System Preference > Expose & Spaces > Expose and in the Active Screen Corners section setup any corner you would like to sleep the display. Then any time you leave with a job running, just park the mouse pointer in that corner and sleep the display until you return.
That's fine and dandy for most things, but does not address the issue brought up by the initial poster. When running iDVD the screen will not blank nor will the screen saver start. If you have a hot corner to blank the screen and you move your mouse to the hot corner the screen will stay blanked for maybe 10 seconds before it unblanks. This is true using the iDVD that came with iLife '08. I haven't tried any others.
It seems that iDVD overrides the users sleep/blanking preference. That makes sense if you are watching something. It makes no sense during the 3+ hours it takes me to render a DVD disk image (I'm not burning a disk at this time).

  • New iMac 27 experiencing screen burn

I noticed when using Adobe CS6 Creative Suite that I am having "screen burn" where I can clearly see whatever I was working on still visible after I close the file or switch to a new one. The default on CS6 seemed to switch to a "gray" work area instead of the "white" work area that i have been so use to - if this switch did not occur I probably would not of noticed it to much. But now that I see it, it's hard to not see it all the time.
My fear is that this is going to get worse, and I have heard of this issue occuring. Anybody have experience with this? Should I be concerned of this being a continuing and damaging issue in the long run?

You have 90 days of AppleCare, why haven't  you called AppleCare and posted your concern?

  • Screen Burn-In Of Folder Names

I've had troubles with my 24-inch iMac 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (Early 2008) display pretty much from the day I got it in January of 2009. I've had weird anomalies on the glass in the top left corner that spread out into the middle which I posted about quite some time back (it's like a "heat rash" of some sort). Today, I noticed that the whole right side of the screen from the very edge to about 2 inches inward all the way down from top to bottom has some sort of anomaly which is most prominent against a medium gray background - almost like heat again (or maybe it's dust under the glass).
But the biggest problem I noticed happened today - an actual screen burn-in which I have never had before on any previous Mac. I've always had my energy saver set to sleep the screen after 5 minutes of inactivity. I have a series of folders that run vertically on the right hand side of my desktop and I can see the burn-in of the folder names now against almost any color of background except white. So the question is - is there a way to get rid of this?
I read this article but I'm a little confused about it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2807?viewlocale=en_US
Apple says to use an all-white jpeg file as a screen saver but wouldn't it be just the same if you opened the jpeg file on the desktop in Picture Viewer and set it to full screen? How long do you have to leave the white background on for? Does anyone have any tips on how to get rid of this burn-in, or as Apple calls it, "persistence"?
Thanks for any tips or advice you can help me out with,
    Gerard

Thanks for your reply David. In my other posting which Apple "kindly" deleted, I tried to explain this situation in a bit more detail. I received a very polite e-mail from Apple saying that it wasn't a cool message and was deleted. No problem. I understand that this is a forum for people helping people but I do believe that it is my right as a consumer to express my disappointment with a product that has been unacceptable - regardless of where my opinion is posted.
Regarding our Plasma/LCD tv problem - this was not a matter of the store issuing us a replacement television - it all had to be cleared by LG first (note that LG Canada is a large outfit here in our country - even though they are a Korean manufacturer). The store we purchased the product from was on the phone to LG while we were in the store giving them the document numbers that we were given by the technician who came out to do the on-site service call. It was LG who told the store to let us decide what we wanted to do which I thought was pretty darned good of them. I was actually prepared to walk out of the store with another LG and I even said to them - much to my amazement - "so you mean we don't have to get another LG?" to which they replied "no - it's up to you". Why didn't we get another LG, then? Because of the experience with the first tv and also, because of the research I did on the Internet about their panels failing. But let's just say that even if it were the store that were to have made the final decision, what difference would that have been then, between that store and the *Apple Store* where I purchased my iMac from? Can you see my point? I asked Apple for a replacement iMac and they flat out refused. I don't want a bunch of parts replaced after only 6 months - especially with an AppleCare Protection Plan which I thought would give us some sort of advantage.
It's too bad that Apple is nowhere near the size of the other "conglomerates" and I guess - in all honesty - this is what is pushing me to the limit in this situation which has been so incredibly frustrating for us. For 17 years, I've dealt with the marginalization issue of Macs - for every one Mac shop, there's 20 PC shops. Walk into a store and for every one Mac software title you might find on a shelf if you're lucky, there's 20 or 30 PC titles. So after becoming so frustrated this time around with an Apple product which has been totally unsatisfactory for the price we paid for it (we paid WAY more than the you-know-what's), I can't help but feel it's time to move on. There's tons of new software that I need right now. Do I re-invest all over again in Mac software? No. Not this time. I've really got my mind made up that it's time to "move on" after this experience.
There are just too many issues to go into here that this iMac has presented for us (I guess you can look through some of my older postings if you like). The screen is the biggest issue and there is not a single software-related issue happening on this iMac that anyone has been able to find anywhere to cause any of this. The temperatures of the iMac are running way too hot (even Apple agreed that they were too hot). It has never been repaired. It is only 6 months old. My last iMac was a 17-inch 2GHz Power PC Ambient Light Sensor model which is still ticking away down at my Mom's place (she "inherited it" and I miss it because it was an absolute gem of a computer).
To add insult to injury - not that I'm looking for sympathy or trying to give anyone a sob story - in 2006, I became very ill and was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor. In 2008, it began pressing against my optic nerve and my vision took a dive. Thus, the need for a larger screen. A screen which is now full of problems.
Anyway, thanks again for your reply. I've always been a loyal Mac user - always loved Apple but at this point in my life, I think it's time for me to visit the other side . I've had "one too many" this time.

  • My LCD screen burned out. I have it connected to a tv now, but can't get the menu bar or the function bars to show up. Please help!

My LCD Screen burned out, but the computer still works. I currently have it connected to an HDTV via, Mini DVI to VGA, VGA to VGA on the tv. Problem is, I can't get the function bar (maybe not the right term) or the bar at the bottom with all my programs on it. I get my screen saver and have managed to drag (by sheer luck since I can't see anything on my iMac screen) some of my pics I had on my desktop over, but nothing else. Please help!

  • How to fill the whole screen of my iMac with the photos included in an iDVD project. (iDVD v. 7.1.2)

How to fill the whole screen of my iMac with the photos I included in an iDVD project. (iDVD v. 7.1.2). I mean, during playing the burned dvd.
When I do "Enter Full Screen", the slide show fills the screen but the photo itself remains in the middle with a wide black border filling the rest.
    Any cure for this ?

    Hi
In iDVD Preferences - Turn off - TV-Safe area - and the Photos will fill the full area with just letterboxing or pillars as max.
Then "Save as a DiskImage" and test this and see if this plays better - before burning DVDs that's not as You want them.
