Weird Search Behavior in iCal

I have noticed in the past 1 month or so that if I use the search box in iCal to search for particular events, sometimes it brings up completely incorrect results. So if I type in "dad birthday" it might bring up something like "picnic at the park". Quitting iCal and then restarting it fixes this problem, but then the problem comes back after a little while of using iCal. Does anyone have any advice on what might be wrong or how to fix it?

a lot of people are suggesting rebuilding the spotlight indexes - this can be done globally for the whole hard drive or just for iCal.
In System Preferences, Spotlight, uncheck then Events & To Do items category and then recheck it for an iCal only reindex, or drag your hard drive to the Privacy list and then remove it to re-index the entire hard drive...

  • Weird search behavior

On a specific compiled HTML help project, when you search for a term, it returns two identical entries - one working and one resulting in page not found. Any ideas how to resolve? I've tried to replace the xpj file from RoboSource and recompile but that did not fix the issue.

    Hi, ndhelp,
Here are a couple of other threads in which this issue is discussed:

    So, the proposed solutions are:
Make a backup of your project. Then rename the .cpd file and reenter your project.
Try creating a new single source layout.
Check the hyperlinks in your topics for any that inadvertently point to target topics that are above the root folder of the help project.

  • Can't search events in ical older than 1 yr on iPhone 4 since upgrading to OS7

This is a serious flaw. I found myself at Mayo clinic relying on searching my iPhone ical to look up past medical events. But I had upgraded to iOS 7 just B4 going & found SEARCH mode on iCal didn't find any event older than 1 year. Called Apple for help and was told this change came in with the new OS!!! And I asked how I could revert to iOS 6 --- not possible!! iCal on my Mac Air & iCloud show ALL my events. But the search mode on iCal on my phone doesn't show everything iCal saves - only the most recent events. Anybody have a workaround this problem??

If what I said helped, you can click on helped. If what I said answered your question, you can click on that. It is up to you, since all I'm here for is to try and help. I'm a user just like you.
Might I suggest something that I do, since I am an AARP member as well, I have created an Adobe document with this information, since I have had several surgeries in the past and then uploaded that into iBooks so I have that on the phone. I can update it as necessary and it keeps me from having to do a lot of searching.

  • Can't search event in iCal Leopard

After upgraded to Leopard, the search function in iCal doesn't work. When typing a event title in the search field, the search pan appears with empty contents. Does anybody get the same result?

Yup, I'm having the same problems over here.
Entering the exact word in a timed event title that's right in front of me leads to a search results panel without that event listed. At all.
    Seriously, this is not good.
It's bad enough they took away the info drawer, but stuff not coming up correctly when searching just compounds the crapiness of it all

  • Search results in iCal using Mountain Lion

Why did Apple move the search results in iCal from the bottom to the side?  I cannot move it or expand the results.  Now, therefore, I cannot read, or see in an organized way, the results.  Please advise if you have any solutions.

  • JList keystroke default search behavior - Part 2...

So, i have a JList with some entries. The default search behavior only works if i first click in the JList. I want it to work by default after the window is created. This is a JList sitting inside a JScrollPane.
Basically, when the JList comes up I want it to have focus and perform a search the first time i hit a key on the keyboard without having to click in the Component.
    thanks!

So you want the JList to have focus when the window brings up.
Have you had a look at the Java tutorial section on [Swing's focus management|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/misc/focus.html] ?
You can request the focus on the JList in a ComponentListener, added on the JList.

  • IPhone 6 Plus weird screen behavior

I recently started noticing some erratic touch behavior on my screen, it's as if I have a possessed phone such as taps that I did not make, or swipes (up/down/left/right) as well. The spotlight randomly swipes down, or the notification center (it seems like a consistent swipe down behavior but at different locations). I couldn't swipe left yesterday to unlock my phone, and sometimes hangs and only locking/unlocking can fix the unresponsiveness.
Moreover, random tappings affect games and apps such as whatsapp, where it goes to the previous page due to a top left page tap, and then again on the edit button, then starts randomly scrolling up and down and tapping random parts of the screen.
This is quite frustrating, I tried formatting and starting the phone as a new one and only installed Whatsapp, but the problem persisted, albeit at fewer occurrences.
Now I noticed the problem again even though I'm on iOS 8.1, with only apps, music, and photos synced back from iTunes. What is happening ? How can I get this fixed ?
    Summary
    Issue :
Erratic touch behavior which cannot be produced on demand
Rare screen unresponsiveness following the weird touch behavior
    What I've tried :
Reset and start phone as New
    Reset all Settings
    Hard Reset
Currently using a sketching app to see how the screen taps randomly (for proof as well).

    Hello zazu90,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To troubleshoot this issue where your touchscreen is behaving erradically on your iPhone, please follow the steps below.
    Restart your device
Hold the On/Off button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the On/Off button to turn it back on.
If you can't restart your device, reset it by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for a least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Clean the screen with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
Avoid using the device while wearing gloves, with wet hands, or immediately after applying hand lotion.
If you have a protective case, or if you are using a plastic sheet or film on the display, try removing them and testing the device without it.
If the steps above don't resolve your issue, please schedule a service appointment with an Apple Retail Store for evaluation. If an Apple Retail store is not an option, contact Apple to find out your best service option or see the Service FAQ for your product.

I am running Version 5.0.2 (1571) of iCal.  When I use the search function and try to click on a returned item to open it what gets opened is whatever is selected in the Reminders.  Is this a known bug?  Is there a solution?  Please let me know.  Thanks.

It was also discussed without resolution in the Using Leopard forum. I will try filing a bug report.

  • Address Book quirky search behavior in Snow Leopard vs. reg. Leopard?

Address Book in 10.5.8 Leopard always allowed quick location of an entry by typing the first few characters of the last name. Gets me the precise name or close to it. AB in Snow L. doesn't do the same. In SL when typing same first 3-4 characters, AB finds a matching first name. Not what I want! Did Apple change that feature, or do I have a problem? I have several machines, some w. 10.5.8, a new one with 10.6.3. Addition of new Snow Leopard also messes up MobileMe sync of Contacts between the different computers (always resetting data on the MBP 10.6.3) The courtesy of your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
I'm having exactly the same problem.
The search now works on the last name only if it is displayed before the first name, which was not the behavior before Snow Leopard.
Thank you for your help ...

  • Search function in ical.

Doesn't give same results on same calendar on MacBook Air & Imac with same Lion & Ical version on both computers.
The two calendars are both synced through same Icloud Account.
Searching options selected are the same on both computers to.
Searching on MacBook Air is retrieving events that  Imac does'nt find although they do exist on the two machines.
    Anyone having an idea ?
    Thanks.
    Jean.

I finally found the solution :
All the events Ical search option couldn't retrieve,
were EVENTS ENTERED IN ICAL BEFORE UPGRADING FROM SNOW LEOPARD
    TO LION OS.
I Erased my calendar from the Imac, and reloaded it from a backup I made on my Macbook Air,
where I had not the same problem bacause it was running native Lion OS.
I think I could as well have reloaded it from Icloud.
    Hoping this may help someone.
    Jean.

  • Weird keyboard behavior in MacBook Pro 13'

Hi guys, I have a MacBook Pro that's starting to show a strange keyboard behavior.
The problem is that the keys: e r t y u i o (curiously all belong to the same row) sometimes get unresponsive.
It's very annoying of course and it happened about 4 months after upgraded to Lion.
The geneal perfomance of the laptop was deteriorated and I've read that a clean install of Lion might help so I've did it thinking that it will also fix any OS weirdness about the keys too.
The machine works way better after the clean Lion install but the problem of those same keys persist.
What I did next was to reset the PRAM thinking it might be interference from some weird state there. But after the reset the problem persisted.
Curiously, I've figured out that when, for example the i key gets unresponsive, if I press AND hold the e key then the i key works totally fine (think of typing an "I" but using e instead of shift).
If, when pressing the unresponsive keys, I use different angles or quantity of force in the pressure of the keys or cornes of the key the behavior stays the same. The only thing that seems to affect is holding the e key down before pressing it. Every time it gets weird I do it and it kind of get normal for a while.
Also, sometimes, keeping some seconds the unresponsive key ends up getting responsive again (but not always).
This mac has about two years now and it's very well preserved.
Do this happen to anyone? ideas?
Is there some other thing than PRAM I could reset to see if it gets normal again?

You are making me dig into nightmare-ish memories here.
    Ok, I'll share.
    This is how turned out:
Needed to send my MBP to another town with an Apple authorized service provider and asked to change the keyboard for a new one.
It was ~20 days waiting until they got the new keyboard part from Apple and about ~3 more to get it fixed and ~2 more to get it again in town.
I received it very well packaged and all was fine after that but the whole thing was very expensive, ~40% of the price I paid for the whole MPB in the first place plus all that time without being able to use it.

  • Weird Battery Behavior in 7.1.1

Has anyone else noticed weird behavior after upgrading to 7.1.1 - on my 5s its not that the battery is draining quickly - in fact its showin 5 hours 40 minutes usage with 75% remaining - which i find hard to believe
whats weird is standby time equals the usage time but i have turnd off and aback on the iPhone - I even did a hard reset - i have a monitor program which is showing the cpu as mostly idling at 90% or more ( although the monitor probably doesnt know about the M7 chip - it probably doesnt even know about the A7 chip too)
The battery percentage is not going down quickly - it seems to be thr same rate as with 7.1 but i dont believe these numbers
Im going to let the battery drain completely and do a battery calibration - that some times helps after IOS upgrades
But i was wondering if anyone else was seeing this and had any suggestions

    Grant Hiesterman wrote:
Out of curiousity, how were the issues fixed/resolved other the past?  With IOS updates? Other?
The problem has always been an errant app that got stuck in a loop. It can happen any time, but is more likely to happen right after an update. My hypothesis is that the update process suspends running apps, and sometimes after the update they "lose their place" and spin their wheels trying to find it. (It's easier to say it that way then to talk about race conditions.) What will frequently fix it is to run the battery all the way down until the phone shuts off. This terminates all processes, even those that cannot be killed from the Quick Launch screen.
You can also try to find the app; if it's email turning off any Push email accounts, rebooting, and turning them back on will frequently fix it. If it's a 3rd party app killing all apps in the Quick Launch will frequently fix it.
Sometimes just turning off the phone for a few minutes will fix it.
Restoring the phone as new will usually fix it, but restoring from backup may not, because the app state may be preserved in the backup.
It really just a matter of trying things like these one at a time. One of them will work.
Do you or Trevor have a CPU monitoring app you believe is a quality application?
I've tried several, and haven't found any that I like. I like Trevor's answer.

  • Search results in iCal give wrong dates

    Hi there,
I have a very odd problem with iCal: whenever I search my calendearr all the results have a date in January 2007. When I click one of the results, it does go back to the right date in the calendar. The problem reoccurs when I use TimeLog 4: all the appointments from iCal show up in Timelog , but are given some date in january 2007. Because of this, Timelog is absolutely useless. I tried exporting and importing all my calendars in iCal but to no avail. Anybody here with the same problem? Anybody here with a solution?
    Thanks!

  • Search function in iCal doesn't work

Can't search in iCal. Notice other posts, but where's the fix?

    Brentbin,
Notice other posts, but where's the fix?
    What have you tried?
Have you tried to...quit iCal, open System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy, and add your Macintosh HD to the list?
Wait a couple of minutes, and then remove your Macintosh HD from the Privacy list. You should notice (after a short delay) that Spotlight is reindexing your HD. After Spotlight completes the index, open iCal and see if your search works.
