Weird semi-loss of AirPort Express and Extreme

I have an odd symptom where, when I launch iTunes, my AirPort Express is sometimes listed is not available from my Power Mac G% (running 10.4.8).
When I launch AirPort Admin Utility, NONE OF MY AIRPORTS (either Extreme or Express) are listed. Rescanning or selecting Other does not solve this.
What is odd is (1) The AirPort menu still shows me connected to my AirPort network and indeed I still have Web access etc. and (2) If I launch AirPort Admin Utility from my MacBook Pro, it shows all the AirPorts correctly (so the problem seems limited to my G5 rather than the AirPort devices).
If I restart my Power Mac G5, the problem goes away and all works well again- for a day or so - and then it returns.
What can I do to permanently eliminate this annoying symptom?

1.) Since the Airport Express is extending the Extreme Network, will my whole network now be single radio only network, since the Express only has one radio?
Although, your AirPort Express is 802.11n, it is not simultaneous dual-band. That means it can either extend the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz radio but not both at the same time. So the AEBSn will still be broadcasting on both the 5 GHz (for 802.11a/n) and on 2.4 GHz (for 802.11b/g/n).
2.) What if both an 802.11g and 802.11n device connect to the Express' radio instead of the Extreme's for some reason, will this make both devices operate at 2.4GHz?
Yes.
3.) What if an 802.11g device connects to the Airport Express' radio. Since this is now 2.4GHz, will it only now communicate with the Airport Extreme at 2.4GHz?
Assuming that you configured the AXn to extend the AEBSn's 2.4 GHz radio, it will only be able to communicate back to the AEBSn on its 2.4 GHz radio.

  • Problems with Airport Express and Extreme

I have tried to set up Airport Express and Extreme.  Both proceeded normally in the Air Port Utility until the final stages.  Then it said it couldn't find the devices. When I tried again (many times), I couldn't even start the process, even though it did that the first time for both.  I'm stumped.

To set up the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) as a bridge, either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then, using the AirPort Utility, make these settings:
AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection tab
    Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update to apply the new settings
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    Network Name: <existing AEBSn's wireless network>
Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup >Music
    Enable AirPlay (checked)
iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    Verify Password: (optional)
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX

  • Any software differences between new airport express and extreme?

I was wondering if there are any features or configuration differences between the two, such as configuring VPN passthrough.
The only difference I can see is using the USB for hard drive use.
Also, do you think the performance will be similar.  I know the time capsule actually rated slower than the extreme even though they use similar hardware.

  • Questions about AirPort Express and Extreme!

I have BT Infinty and the hub is situated in the living room. What I want to do is extend the wi fi to my room which is around 10 metres away.
Are you able to connect the AirPort Express to the network and then create a network for the AirPort Express for my MacBook Pro to connect to?
I have two options and questions
    1. Buy a AirPort Extreme and replace my BT hub with that. Then use an AirPort Express to extend the wi fi. But when you extend the wi fi does it mean that when I search for a wireless hotspot from my Mac I connect the the AirPort Express? Or is there a way of making the AirPort express to have a different name?
    2. Use my Bt hub and buy a AirPort Express and connect it to my Infinty Connection. BUT is there a way of making a hotspot for the AirPort Express for example
my Infinity connection is named Bt-Infinty2356
I use the AirPort express to connect it and extend the wifi
THEN is it possible to make a hotspot named "AirPort-Express-Muppet" for me to connect from my Mac?
    Thanks

I have no experience with the "BT Infinity Modem" and "BT HomeHub", but I assume that they are two separate units?
If yes: connect the modem direct to the Extreme by ethernet cable.
If it is a "combined" unit: connect the Extreme by ethernet cable to one of the ethernet slots on the hub.
In both cases set the Extreme to "Create a wireless network".
Use a Airport Express to "extend a Wireless Network", and extend the Extreme.
Do not expect the Airport Express to extend the BT hub wireless network, because it will not work.
In both cases you have two wireless networks: one from the Hub and one from the Extreme.
Off the record: I have the same situation in France with the "Livebox" (Orange) that is connected to a Netgear WiFi router: two network: the Livebox is just that, the Netgear is "relayed" through Netgear Routers (Switches) to five areas in the "house". The same in Switzerland, but there I used Extreme and Express units instead of the netgear units.
The Hiome Hub should work fine connected to the modem by cable, and the other network also by connected to the cable. Do not mix the different brands: trouble.

  • Using Airport Express and Extreme Together

I have the old Airport Express and have just bought the latest Extreme. I'm sure Extreme will work fine with my iMac but am not so sure it will work with my G4 Powerbook as it does not have the recommended software requirements. Is there anyway I can setup a network using both the old Express and the new Extreme?

    Welcome to the discussions!
Your old AirPort Express is a "g" wireless device while your new AirPort Extreme is a newer and much faster "n" wireless device.
If you are asking if you can use your old AirPort Express to "extend" the wireless from the AirPort Extreme using wireless only, the answer is yes....BUT....your new AirPort Extreme will drop down to old "g" wireless levels if you do this.
The setup procedure for this is quite difficult and frustrating for many users. To get an idea of what is involved if you want to try this, see this link for the procedure:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2355832&tstart=0
IF...you are able to connect the AirPort Express to your AirPort Extreme using an ethernet connection, the setup will be much easier to accomplish and your AirPort Extreme will maintain faster "n" speeds on the wireless. Post back for more details if that is a possibility.

  • Airport Express and Extreme both having timeout issues once every few days.

I have both an Airport Express and an Airport Extreme in the house (one on each side of the house), and for the last few months, we have been experiencing timeout issues with both. About once every few days, my computer (or any other computer here - all Macs) will lose connection to the hub. When I try to reconnect in the Wifi menu, it says "Connection timed out". Also, on my iPhone, when I try to connect, it says "Unable to connect".
All this takes is a quick restart of the Airport (just pull the power out and plug in), but this is VERY frustrating. I've updated to the latest firmware... I'm not sure what else to do.
    Any ideas?

Ok, thanks for clarifying that for me. I suggest starting by reviewing the following AirPort User Tip around the details for best base station placement. Let's see if this will help increase the bandwidth performance of your extended network. Most likely, due to combination of distance and Wi-Fi interference, you may not be getting the best bandwidth possible. Please post back your results.

  • 3 powerline adaptors with airport express and extreme

    Hi all,
I am currently using two airport express and 2 TP-LINK powerline adaptors to create a "roaming" network, however i would like to add another powerline adaptor and an airport extreme to my network.
Modem -> Airport Extreme in the living room with an ethernet cable plugged into the powerline
1st Airport Express plugged into the 2nd powerline adaptor
3rd Airport Express plugged into the 3rd powerline adaptor
so my question is will the above setup work? or do i need to connect another powerline adaptor into the main Airport Extreme making the whole network use a total of 4 powerline adaptors? however if only a total of 3 powerline adaptors are required, would the network be confused and render the whole network useless?

  • What are the main differences between airport express and extreme?

what are the main differences between the express and extreme base stations.

In addition to Bob Timmons' link the main differences are as follows:
Extreme has a slightly more powerful antenna (might not be true but from experience it seems to be)
    Extreme has USB HDD sharing
    Express has AirPlay
Extreme has 3 Gigabit ports (don't be confused by Apple's page. Apple states 4 including WAN, 3 without WAN)
    Express is smaller
Express has 10/100 Ethernet whereas Extreme has Gigabit

  • Panasonic BL-C131 wireless doesn't work with Airport Express and Extreme

I have Airport Express to create a wireless network, and an Airport Extreme to extend the wireless network. When I connect the LAN cable on Extreme and the Panasonic BL-C131, the camera can successfully detect IP and work fine. However, when I remove the cable and switch the camera to wireless mode, it can never detect the IP. I've read somewhere in the camera manual that it needs a UPnP enabled router to have wireless work. I am wondering if there is any way to confirm, since I know Airport only support Bonjour.
I really like to keep the Airport at home, or I'll need to replace it with a D-link router.

  • Itunes remote speaker using Airport Express and Extreme

I have purchased an Airport Extreme and Airport Express, so I can listen Itunes music on my stereo system. For some reason, there is simply no remote speaker selection button on the bottom right of the Itunes windows. Does it has to do with the fact that I am using an old Mac OS X?
My Macmini has no airport card, so I connected the ethernet to the Airport extreme, and plugged the Airport express few feet from the base. Nothing but an orange tilting light comes out of the little box. I can surf the net perfectly but the Itunes is ignoring all my investment on the couple of Airport boxes i purchase...What I am doing wrong?

Yes, I thought that purchasing the Airport extreme as
the ethernet interfase directly connected to the
MacMini, was almost the same as having the airport
card inside the Mini. Where did I get lost?? I have
the extreme directly to the mini, and an express
plugged somewhere close and nothing happens...
The problem is that the mini can only stream iTunes to an Airport Express via Airport. While you have connected it to an Airport basestation, as far as the mini is concerned, it is working via ethernet because that's how the data is leaving the system. It doesn't have an Airport card, thus it can't stream iTunes content to an Airport Express.

  • Airport Express and Extreme are not working together

My new airport extreme came up just fine. All my Macs and PCs connected effortlessly.
The same can not be said for my Airport Express. I reset it, and it takes the config, then vanishes. Connected directly to my Mac, to the Airport Express, or via wireless to the express, it still just disappears and gives a blinking amber light.
I tried re-installing 6.3 firmware, with no luck. Any ideas?

    Dan,
Thanks for the clarification. The behavior you're encountering sounds as if it may be the expected behavior of an Airport Express after it has been set to client mode, but wasn't able to join the network. Typically when setting up an Airport Express you'd want the unit to be in the same room as the Extreme, and then if the Airport LED is not going green then it's typically an authentication association relates situation. Have you reviewed knowledge base article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302153 ?

  • Hi. Does anyone know how to extend the airport express and extreme with Cisco Router DPC3925. I have upgrade my wireless to 50Mbps. Thank you

    Hi,
    Can someone help.
I have a Cisco router DPC3925 provided by the ISP and I cannot extend my wireless with Airport Express.
Also I intend to extend it with Airport Extreme.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

Sorry, but your post is not clear. The topic of this thread is how to extend an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme with a Cisco router.
This would mean that the main router was an AirPort device and the Cisco would be extending the existing network provided by the AirPort.
Is that really what you want to do?
If not, then it sounds like your Cisco ISP provided wireless router is your "main" router and you will be using the Time Capsule to extend the network.
Please start another post to tell us exactly.......
What device will be the main router providing your Internet connection and wireless network
What device will extend the network
What operating system that you have on your Mac or PC

  • Can't forward ports with Cisco EPC3925 and Airport Express and Extreme!

    Hello,
I have very big problem, I've been trying for whole day to forward ports for steam and I just can't I tried everything, I have Cisco EPC3925 ( Its main thing I think its router - right ? ) Then I have connected Airport Express to it with ethernet cable ( It's working as DHCP and NAT I have double nat issue in my airport program I don't know what is this ) also Airport Express is set to create a Wi-Fi network, then I have connected Airport Extreme with Wi-fi and set to exceed wi-fi network and can't change anything in it , can't open ports etc. etc. MY COMPUTER is connected to Airport Extreme ( 2nd device ) with cable ! So Im not connecting my computer to internet with wi-fi
Also I've been looking in Airport Express ( the 1st device ) and I saw that there I can open ports , but I opened them and nothing happend ... ports are still closed... Also I've set my computer ip to static , tried everything . And portforward.com site isn't helpfull . Also I tried to set Airport Express ( 1st device ) in bridge mode and nothing happend ( after I set it to bridge mode I can't open ports in airport program )
Please is there anyone that can Help me with this ????
Also I want to say that somehow I dont know how, but I managed to open ports in the past
I need to open all necessary ports because If I can't open them - I can't make a server and people can't join . I really really need help I've spent whole today's saturday to get it to work and this won't work !

    Tesserax wrote:

Yes, the Cisco EPC3925 is a combination modem and wireless router or gateway device. This is the device that you would need to configure for port forwarding/mapping.
Then I have connected Airport Express to it with ethernet cable ( It's working as DHCP and NAT I have double nat issue in my airport program I don't know what is this )
A "Double NAT" condition is when you have two or more routers in series where they all have NAT enabled. NAT is a service that is intended to allow you to share one Public IP address with multiple Private network clients. This is what allows you to have more than one computer on your local network have the ability to share an Internet access.
Since you have your AirPort Express connected to the Cisco by Ethernet AND the Express is configured to have NAT enabled is why you are getting a Double NAT warning.
Normally you would want all downstream routers to be reconfigured as bridges (NAT & DHCP disabled).
also Airport Express is set to create a Wi-Fi network, then I have connected Airport Extreme with Wi-fi and set to exceed wi-fi network and can't change anything in it , can't open ports etc. etc.
You will need to reconfigure the Express as a bridge. The fact that you have configured the Extreme to extend its wireless range is fine.
Also I've been looking in Airport Express ( the 1st device ) and I saw that there I can open ports , but I opened them and nothing happend ... ports are still closed
You do not want to open ports on the Express. Again, if you reconfigure it as a bridge you won't need to as all of its ports will be opened.
Ok I understand what u said, so I set my airport Express 1st device in bridge mode - if I do that I can surf internet without problems etc. Then when I set it to bridge mode my computer gets adress 192.168.1.X ( My computer gets 13 and I've set it to be static ) so my computer is 192.168.1.13 then -> I open ports for example 2700-27015 ( for steam ) in my router cisco website witch is 192.168.1.1 and in ip adress label I put my computer adress 192.168.1.13 after I do this I reset the router and turn it back on after all this everything should work fine and my ports should be open right?? Well..I've tried it.. after this I can surf internet without problems of course but my ports are still closed ... Im checking them on http://www.canyouseeme.org/ and it says they are closed I've tried with pultiple ports such as 80 .. and it just won't work I don't know why..
Also someone told me to use DMZ on and in ip adress put WAN ip of my airport express ( if its NOT set in bridge mode ) and open ports for my airport ( also I tried to open for my computer too ) - It doesn't work
Please friend tell me you can help me ..

  • How compatible are the airport express and extreme with the 2wire routers?

I have been spending ages trying to set up our connection with a linksys router due to the lack of signal from our 2wire and they just do not want to co-operate.  The 2wire is a 3800hgv-b with a special firmware from at&t to be able to be used for tv purposes as well and also so they can control their users.  The signal barely leaves the room its in and it seems like this would help boost it to other parts of the house.  Is this going to help my problems? Basically I don't want to use the 2-wire as a router just the AX and the 2-wire would just be used for tv.  I don't know how familiar everyone is with U-verse but we were given three plug links which all connect to the same network.  One goes to the 2-wire and we use one for a wired printer and I'm curious if i could use the last one to connect to the AX and broadcast it from upstairs.  The linksys struggled with this because it couldn't act as an access point very well and it was better off with just setting up a new network.  Would it be able to act as an access point for the 2wire? Basically I'm just curious if this is going to solve my problems, or at least most of them.

I have been spending ages trying to set up our connection with a linksys router due to the lack of signal from our 2wire and they just do not want to co-operate.
Since the "extend wireless network" feature used by Apple appears to be a proprietary function, it is extremely unlikely that an Apple device would "extend" or "repeat" the wireless signal that is being transmitted from your 2-Wire router.....if this is what you are asking here.
If you were to use both an AirPort Extreme (connected directly to the 2-Wire by Ethernet cable) and an AirPort Express, then you would be able to configure the Express to "extend" the wireless network that is being broadcast by the AirPort Extreme.
